In Part 2 of Episode 40, I'm joined by Wisconsin Golf Hall of Famer and Golf Writers Association of America member, Gary D'Amato, along with multiple-time Tour winner Guy Boros, son of World Golf Hall of Famer Julius Boros. Gary, a member of the Golf Writers Association of America for over 40 years, has covered every Masters since 1993 and was inducted into the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame in 2017. While Whistling Straits and Erin Hills are well-known, Gary highlights several other hidden gem courses in Wisconsin, a state that often flies under the radar as a golf destination. He also shares stories of playing alongside some of Wisconsin's greatest golfers, including Steve Stricker, Andy North, Jerry Kelly, and Sherri Steinhauer. Additionally, Gary recounts one of his favorite Masters moments—following Jack Nicklaus as he nearly captured his seventh Green Jacket in 1998—and discusses the book he co-wrote with Packers legend Chester Marcol on the history of the Packers-Bears rivalry. Guy Boros grew up traveling on Tour with his father, Julius, a three-time major champion who won the 1952 and 1963 U.S. Opens and the 1968 PGA Championship. Julius held the record as the oldest major champion, winning the 1968 PGA at 48 years old, until Phil Mickelson surpassed him a few years ago at nearly 51. Guy also found significant success on Tour, particularly in Canada, where he won the Canadian Order of Merit in 1991. His first PGA Tour victory came at the 1996 Greater Vancouver Classic, which he won by a stroke over Lee Janzen. In our conversation, Guy reflects on how his game seemed to elevate whenever he crossed the border, the experience of growing up around the great players of the 60s and 70s while traveling with his father, and his victory at the Vancouver Classic. He also shares insights from playing in this year's U.S. Senior Open at Newport Country Club and the Senior Open Championship at Carnoustie.

Hello again fellow golfists, I finally found this amazing formative ABC Sports major championship tournament that I watched 29 years ago in 1993. Lee Janzen won his first major championship at the 1993 US Open at Baltusrol in Springfield New Jersey. He played the final round with Payne Stewart and it was so great to see Payne Stewart playing golf again. I love seeing the older equipment, hearing the commentators, and the respect that ABC Sports had for the viewer by not injecting commercials every five minutes to distract the viewer from watching this great USGA championship on Father's Day back in 1993. I want to commend the Conrad Nagel for uploading this tournament onto youtube for all to enjoy. Here is the link for the youtube video:https://youtu.be/9Q-tqDacl1QThanks for listening.#theknackeredgolfistpodcast

Finish this Challenge and I'll be Super Impressed. I learned this drill when I was back in college playing at Florida Southern. Lee Janzen, former US Open Champion and FSC alum came back to practice with the team a few times. Lee's always been an incredible putter, and this was a drill he worked on every day. There are few reasons why I love this drill: 1. You don't hit the same putts over and over again 2. You're simulating real golf circumstances 3. You're simulating pressure 4. You're working on your entire pre-shot routine 5. It's a great benchmark for how good your short putting is Truthfully, you probably won't appreciate this drill until you try it a few times and realize how frustrating it can be. If you miss any one of the 24 putts, you have to start all the way back at the beginning. I think you've got to be a pretty good short range putter to accomplish this. Sharpen Up Indoors Over the Winter: So, if you're up north in the snow, this is a great use of your time indoors. While you're watching football, grab a coin and see if you can get through this drill before the 4th quarter ends. You'll be super sharp when the snow melts. Message me if you're able to accomplish this drill...I want to keep a short list of top putters in the crowd in case I'm short a player in my next scramble. Cheers. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/golf-essentials/message

The 2017 Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai will be Tuesday January 17-Saturday January 21. The final round being on Saturday means football fans who love golf too can stay home and watch football on Sunday!!!! Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and I have worked together on this tournament for 20 years. We share some stories about what a wonderful week it is in so many ways. Meanwhile here are specifics ... . It's a PGA TOUR Champions tournament with official event champions of the 2015 and 2016 seasons, winners of the majors since 2012 and ten professionals by invitation with a minimum of five or more career victories, including one major. It's a wonderful event for spectators on the beautiful Hualalai Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu. The Pro-Am is on Tuesday January 17-Wednesday January 18 and for the 54 hole stroke play event broadcast with a 1.8 million purse will be broadcast on NBC Golf Channel Thursday, Friday and Saturday January 19-21. Duffy Waldorf will defend. Advance tickets are available at pgatour.com/mec Week. $20 One Day Pass / $40 Tournament Pass (purchase on website) or at the Gate $25 Tournament Day Pass $ 50 Tournament Pass . The PGA Champions Tour players who have qualified for this years tournament are: Michael Allen, Billy Andrade, Woody Austin, Paul Broadhurst, Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Roger Chapman, Fred Couples, Joe Daley, Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Carlos Franco, David Frost, Doug Garwood, Paul Goydos, Jay Haas, Kohki Idoki, Lee Janzen, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Kenny Perry, Gene Sauers, Jerry Smith, Esteban Toledo, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf, Mark Wiebe, Ian Woosnam. The 10 sponsor exemptions include John Daly, Fred Funk, Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Davis Love III, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Tom Pernice Jr., Loren Roberts, Vijay Singh, Jeff Sluman, Jerry Smith, David Toms, Tom Watson Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and Brian Goin, head of PGA Tour Championship Management, Dave Senko, Senior Manager Communications at the PGA Tour, Pete Rolfing, PCR Sports< M and so many others who return each year. While we get an opportunity to see up close, Champions Tour players and be inspired by their golf, I think one of the best aspects of this event for the last 20 years is the funds that have been raised for local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the volunteers with Kris Hazard and Larry Webb continuing as volunteer co-chairs and in return the tournament donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation. Big Island Junior Golf is one of the charities as well. I always look forward to Saturday when the keiki from the Big Island Junior Golf in Hilo sponsored by Mitsubishi come to the tournament after they play their own tournament at Mauna Lani Resort. They are knowledgeable golf fans and so enthused when getting autographs. While players are good with the fans, they are especially attentive to the juniors. In the past Tom Watson and Hale Irwin each year have a special interaction with the keiki joking and interacting with them as they signs autographs. I have friends who were junior golfers when this event started 20 years ago on the Big Island and no question being around this quality golf inspired my friends to practice, get on their high school team, earn college scholarships and a handful are now professional golfers. The Daniel R Sayre Foundation is another one of the charities. The Foundation was created by Dr. Frank and Laura Sayre in memory of their son Daniel who lost his life in a hiking accident 20 years ago in Pololu Valley. Recognizing the need for rescue equipment, the Daniel R Sayre Foundation with tremendous community support has raised well over a million dollars in monies and equipment for our Hawaii County Fire Department and Rescue Teams. David Marr III, Mark Rolfing, and Jay Radzavicz all with NBC Golf Channel return each year to be part of the broadcasts and reports from the Mitsubishi Electric Championship and lend their support for an event at Nanea with some of the Champions Tour players raising funds for the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association. The PGA Tour, Brendan Moynahan, Director of Golf Hualalai Golf Club and his staff, Kahu Billy Mitchell, “Uncle” Earl Regidor Manager, Ka’upulehu Cultural Center, the Four Seasons Resort staff and the volunteers have year after year created a world class event with players that just might inspire you to work on your golf game a little more or volunteer next year.

Rich and Holly also talk about the U.S. Open qualifiers and "The Longest Day in Golf" The best players in the U.S. played to gain a spot in the U.S. Open. Lee Janzen was DQd for wearing metal spikes. Bob Harig, ESPN.com, calls in to talk to Holly and Rich about the Memorial Tournament. Some of the struggles that the players had even surprised Jack Nicklaus. Kevin Chappell was the only player to get through a round without a bogey and he did that on the final day. Tiger had been playing so well before the Memorial and then turned in the worst score of his career. This year he has won four tournaments and placed T4 at the Masters. Bob feels that if Tiger improves his putting that he will play well at the U.S. Open. He had one bad week. Everyone talks about the shortness of the course at Marion but Bob feels that there are holes that have difficulty and he doesn't feel that Marion will be a pushover. Rich and Bob talk about the limited number of spectators that can come watch the U.S. Open live due to the small size of the property at Marion. The players will warm up at the West Course at Marion and then be shuttled about a mile to the East Course to play. Holly plays her interview with Annika Sörenstam at the Reunion Golf Course. The interview was conducted shortly after Annika was elected as a member of the PGA a couple of weeks ago and the announcement was made that the HQ for the North Florida PGA was being moved to Reunion. Annika talks about getting kids involved and her approach with getting her own children involved in golf without forcing it on them. She also talks about her trip to China as an ambassador of the game with Greg Norman. MIKE BENDER Master Instructor, Mike Bender Golf Academy 2009 National PGA Teacher of the Year Growing up in Waterloo, Iowa, Mike Bender was an inveterate tinkerer. He would dismantle, then reassemble, radios, televisions, bicycles and anything else that could be taken apart and put back together. It was this razor sharp mechanical aptitude, an eye for detail and a passion for golf that have combined to allow this Midwestern native to become one of the top golf instructors in the world. Today, Bender can efficiently assemble a better golf swing for any golfer from rank beginners to the game's top touring professionals. This extraordinary knowledge combined with his ability to explain the necessary fundamentals in a clear and concise manner is why he is the 2009 PGA of America National Teacher of the Year, ranked among the Top 10 Greatest Teachers in America by Golf Digest Magazine and, for more than a decade, has been included in GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 Teacher list. As Bender has quickly achieved worldwide recognition among his peers, the game’s top players have sought out his advice. Zach Johnson, 2007 Masters and AT&T Classic champion, has trained with Mike since Johnson was launching his professional career on the mini-tours at the beginning of the decade. LPGA tournament winners, Seon Hwa Lee and Joo Mi Kim also have been working with Mike for years. More recently, PGA Tour veterans including Skip Kendall and two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen have put their faith in Mike. All told, Bender has helped nearly two dozen PGA, Champions and LPGA Tour professionals with their games. Many of these professionals have a high comfort level with Mike because they know he has been in their shoes. Bender was a three-time NCAA All-American (1978-1980) and two-time NCAA Division III individual champion (1979-1980) before spending three seasons on the PGA Tour from 1987-89. This high level of competition inspired Mike to search out top teachers to help him with his own game. During the 1980s while he was competing, he spent significant time learning about the golf swing from Ben Doyle, Mike Adams, David Leadbetter and Mac O’Grady, all of whom have been ranked among the 50 Greatest Teachers in America by Golf Digest. It was while working with these teachers that Bender’s swing theories were refined. But having a solid understanding of the golf swing doesn’t necessarily make a teacher great. The instructor must also have a burning desire to transfer this knowledge to actual improvement in each student’s game. Mike not only wants to be able to explain how a student should make the most efficient golf swing possible, but he wants to make sure the student feels the proper swing for himself. Once the student can feel the proper motion, it becomes critical to find ways to enable the student to develop the correct motion even when the teacher isn’t watching. Bender’s revolutionary solution is called MEGSA PPE. For more than a decade Bender filled his garage designing prototypes of what was to become this breakthrough training system. The final result, which stands for Most Efficient Golf Swing Attainable Perfect Practice Equipment is now being used by more than a dozen touring professionals, including Johnson and Morgan Pressel. This comprehensive training station is located on a practice range or indoor facility and allows golfers to hit shots while avoiding the unit's adjustable bumpers which provide real-time feedback as to whether or not the club and body are in the preferred positions during the swing. Thousands of amateurs are already hooked on MEGSA PPE at select facilities around the country. While still in the early stages of the consumer roll out, Bender is working on plans to have MEGSA PPE equipped facilities throughout the world in the near future. Today, from his home base near Orlando at Timacuan Golf Club in Lake Mary, Florida, Bender continues to tinker, designing new training aids, refining MEGSA PPE and trying to understand in even more detail what traits can make a golf swing even more efficient and powerful. For Mike, it is a quest for perfection that will never be complete, it is also a quest that has already made Bender one of the finest instructors golf has ever known. Many know Rick Smith the golf instructor, but few know about his accolades as a player. He never lost a match at Upper St. Clair High School near Pittsburgh, he qualified for the 1983 U.S. Open at Oakmont, and in 1980 he shot a 61 in the PGA's club professional Playing Ability Test."I learned a lot working for Walker Inman at Scioto Country Club, and he believed that to be a great teacher of the game, you had to be a pretty good player," says Smith. So much, I've actually thought about playing on the Champions Tour when I turn 50."Ever since he used to pass instruction notes to high school teammates and give lessons to a then 14-year-old Lee Janzen, Smith says his time spent on the lesson tee is his favorite part of the day.RICK SMITHMASTER TEACHING PROFESSIONAL TO THE PGA TOUR’S BEST!Rick Smith, CEO and President of Rick Smith Enterprises, Inc., has achieved great success in golf as a teacher, designer and communicator. Dave is a playing and teaching professional in Orange County California. He has obsessively been studying the golf swings of the games greatest players and the teachings of what are considered to be the world's best teachers for the past 30 years. As Dave's teaching philosophy developed he realized that the “true” secret of the golf swing is the clubface and the ability of the golfer to control it throughout the entire golf swing. The majority of golfers in the world do not have a good understanding of the clubface position throughout the swing. Dave made the clubface position throughout the entire golf swing the center piece of his professional instruction, which resulted in his students achieving greater success much more quickly.www.clubfacegolf.comAvila Beach Golf Resort - www.avilabeachresort.com Blacklake Golf Resort - www.blacklake.comInn at Avila Beach - www.avilabeachca.comAvila LaFonda Hotel - www.avilalafondahotel.comGolfland Warehouse - www.golflandwarehouse.comSlickstix - www.slickstix.comFor more information on Golf Talk Radio with Mike & Billy visit www.golftalkradio.com and visit www.centralcoasttoday.com for Golf Talk TV with Mike & Billy.
