Millions of ambitious young people wake each morning wanting to "change the world," but few have as ambitious a goal as Bill Liu, founder of Chinese flexible display company Royole Corporation. If Thomas Friedman argued that "the world is flat," then Bill Liu's mission is to bend, curve and roll up that world. Liu founded Royole in 2012 after gaining a Ph.D in electrical engineering from Stanford University at age 26. Five years later, the company provides flexible display solutions to various industries and has launched several consumer products, including a smartphone that can be rolled into a bracelet, the first of its type readily available to consumers. "Flexible display electronics are a very new way for people to interact with consumer and electronics information," Liu, now 34, told China Money Network during an exclusive interview at the company's headquarters in Shenzhen. "I believe flexible displays could be everywhere in the future, because it is convenient, easy to use, and provides more robust design possibilities." Royole is venturing into a new market with high potential. If any type of digital display, from computers, to phones and TVs, can be bent or rolled up, then everything from wristwatches to car dashboards can be completely re-imagined. Watch China Money TV's Visit To Royole's Shenzhen Headquarters: This alternate, flexible future is also exciting tech giants like Samsung and LG. Both are mass producing flexible displays for use on their mobile phones, the Galaxy S7 Edge and the LG G Flex 2. Apple, reportedly, may be buying around 100 million flexible panels for its future iPhones. "Flexible display is a huge business opportunity enabling industries worth hundreds of billions of dollars," said a tech venture investor who preferred to remain anonymous. "Its applications in wearable devices, healthcare, Internet-of-Things (IoT) and fashion are exciting. Think about the possibilities if smartphones can wrap around your wrist and brands can display ads on your T-shirt." That potential has made Royole a magnet for venture investors, and as a result it is currently the world's most valuable tech start-up focused exclusively on this frontier industry. The company has raised over RMB2 billion, or nearly US$300 million, in five financing rounds since 2012, with its latest valuation at a hefty US$3 billion. The company already has over 700 intellectual properties under its name in the field of flexible displays. Royole's challenge, however, will be to turn ideas into breakthrough products, then into a scaleable and profitable businesses. It remains to be seen whether Royole's products can win over consumers. The company has one showroom in Beijing - with another opening in Shenzhen in October - where consumers can view its rollable mobile phone, called the FlexPhone, as well as a transparent keyboard that can be rolled into a pen-size container, and a foldable 3D virtual mobile theater in the form of a headset. Some of the products, such as the headset, are also sold online. Liu would not disclose details on how sales are trending, but he said people are looking forward to new technologies and products, and he is confident his company is building momentum. Royole's business-to-business segment also faces major hurdles, one of which is the protection of its IP. Liu explained during a TV show last month that Royole decided to build its own factory partly to meet growing demand, and partly over difficulty in finding a manufacturing partner with proper business terms to secure solid protection of its IP. The B2B business also depends on its clients' ability to apply the new technology into their own products. The company has signed strategic partnership agreements with Chinese sports goods retailer Li Ning Co., Ltd., Shenzhen Bus Group, China Southern Airlines, and the Shenzhen subsidiary of China Mobile, to explore how flexible displays could be utilized to create new products.

It's the best rhetorical question we've seen this week: where can you mix 1990s sci-fi references, history lessons about famous steamships, and modern musings on the state of leatherbound smartphones? If you know the answer, congratulations on knowing the time of day and your ear from your elbow. If you don't, allow us to clarify it for you. This is the Pocketnow Weekly podcast. On this week's episode, we dive once again into the ever-less-mysterious LG G4 and run our fingers across its supple stitched-leather backside. Sorry, that's gross; we don't have the phone yet, so we caress it in our imaginations. Annnnnd that's probably not much better. Let's move on. Alongside the G4 speculation: the news of the week, from Huawei to HTC, from Nokia to Alcatel – no, not that Alcatel ... but we'll hear from them too as we take a quick on-air look at the Alcatel Onetouch Watch. That's all followed by an extended segment of What Phone Should I Get and your listener mail, so don't go thinking we're just here to crack weak jokes. There's work to be done! Pocketnow Weekly 144 is on the ways, the tallow and grease have been slathered on the rails, and the channel has been cleared of hazards – so smash the champagne bottle on the bow and watch it roll into the river. The video broadcast recorded at 6:30pm Eastern on April 16 (click here for your local time) might not be your best bet due to Hangout difficulties, so check out this high-quality audio version right here, and shoot your questions to podcast [AT] pocketnow [DOT] com for a shot at getting your question read aloud on the air. If you're in the US and own an LG G3, write in to podcast AT pocketnow.com with your answer to this trivia question: Twenty years before the LG G3 VR headset debuted, a rough-and-tumble sci-fi action film reinvigorated the public's imagination for virtual reality (and introduced us to a beardless Russell Crowe in the process). Also starring Denzel Washington, Kelly Lynch and some ... intriguing mid-90s concepts of the future of technology, this film also introduced us to the timeless quote: "I'm a 50 terabyte self-evolving neural network, double backflip off the high platform. I'm not a swan dive." Name the film in an email to podcast AT pocketnow.com (not in the Q&A or comments) and you could win an LG G3 VR headset courtesy of Pocketnow and LG! Listener Mail (01:17:36) E-mailed submission from William Li, answered in absentia by our own Joe Levi Weekend Reading (01:23:51) In the heady days of the dawn of radio, the word "wireless" meant a very different thing indeed. This week marks the 103rd anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, where wireless telegraphy played a crucial role. Historian Parks Stephenson has amassed a mass of information on Titanic and her particular Marconi installation at his website, Macronigraph.com. Tragic circumstances aside, the complexity of the century-old equipment is a helpful reminder of the sophisticated technology we carry in our own pockets today. Excerpt: Titanic was fitted with a Marconi twin "T" type aerial, rising vertically from the roof of the Marconi Silent Room, connecting with four horizontal wires strung between the ship’s two masts. Positive electrical connection was made between each vertical lead-in and its corresponding wire in the horizontal flat top by means of a McIntyre connector. Two 20-foot spreaders at either end of the flat top portion spaced the two inner wires 8 feet apart and the two outer wires 6 feet from the inner wires. The aerial spreaders were supported by bridles of tarred hemp rope (ratline), which in turn could be raised or lowered by rope halyards run through reef blocks attached to the top of their respective masts. The forward spreader had four eyebolts, each of which took an aerial strain insulator, from which an individual aerial wire was run. • Thanks for tuning in! See you next time. This week, Jane and Daniel recount all the CES 2015 trials, tribulations, winners and losers. Specifically, a great deal of time is spent figuring out whether the LG G Flex 2 is just another gimmick or if it has the legs (and the curve) to go mainstream. Also, YotaPhone 2, all the terrible smartwatches, and Attack of the Drones. Duration: 81 minutes Hosts: Jane McEntegart, Daniel Bader
An echo-filled hotel room, hosts with cracked voices and stuffy noses, and a rundown full of the hottest new mobile technology in the world. Those ingredients can spell only one thing: a CES 2015 wrap-up podcast straight from the heart of Las Vegas, hosted by your very own Pocketnow pixel pirates. And we're not alone! Joining us on this two-hour mission to tame the wild ramparts of the mobile tech scene are two podcast guests near and dear to our hearts: Nicole Scott of MobileGeeks and Joshua Vergara of Android Authority. Together with our CES video host/producer Hayato Huseman, it makes for a mighty rambunctious roundtable whose enthusiasm hopefully helps temper the echo. So if you're trying to pick up the pieces from CES like we are, join us for Pocketnow Weekly 130 below. It's an audio-only show so don't go looking for the YouTube embed; this one you'll have to devour through your ears. Not to worry though: we'll be back with our usual sound quality, Hangouts Q&A, and listener mail next week.
The mercury is dropping, the champagne corks are popping, and the annual complaints about PR pitches are flowing freely in the Twittersphere. All that can only mean one thing: another CES is just around the corner, and it's time to talk about what we're expecting from America's largest consumer electronics show! As always, we're keeping our focus confined to mobile - and joining us on this special CES pre-show is another luminary in the mobile tech space, Booredatwork's own Enobong Etteh. He'll help us break down everything from the conventional smartphones and tablets to the promising wearables and bizarre accessories we'll be seeing on the show floor in Vegas this year. If we're lucky, he'll even give laptop and gaming fans a sneak peek into the non-mobile coverage Booredatwork will be doing on-site as well. "What would you say to the people who think that what you do is illegal?" " ... I would tell them that I don't want to answer this question." When you're interviewing the world's most notorious phone leaker, he's bound to duck a question or two. But cautious though he is, Evan Blass –formerly of Pocketnow and currently known across the web by his pen name @evleaks– is also a fountain of insight into the shadowy craft of being a professional spoiler. On today's episode of the Pocketnow Weekly, Evan shares the ups and downs of the underworld he's come to dominate, and gives us a glimpse into the man behind the brand - including some somber reflections on life with Multiple Sclerosis. "This is much more personal than I usually get. If you're listening to this show you're one of the rare people who are hearing me ... sort of open up about my personal life ... more so than I've done under the guise of @evleaks before." Before that, of course, we've got the usual news of the week, including Samsung-vs-Apple, a rather shady All New HTC One leak, a horrifying LG G Flex video, and (sigh) the first few trickles of Nexus 6 speculation. The 2014 Consumer Electronics Show better known as CES has kicked off in Las Vegas with a preview of some of the world's newest, hottest technology. LG unveiling① its new webOS-based smart TVs, which it claims will "make TV simple again". More than 70 percent of LG's smart TVs will be based on webOS in 2014, which helps simplify searching contents and setting up the TV. LG also expects the new OS will make it easy for developers to write applications for its TVs. The company also aims to use webOS to increase communications between smart TVs and other devices. Dr Skott Ahn is LG Electronics Chief Technology Officer "With webOS, LG has simplified② the TV experience again. We've simplified the way you connect your TV, the way you switch between content and input and the way you discover new content and services." Content partners set to supply LG televisions with new Ultra HD, 4K content include Youtube, Amazon and online steaming service Netflix, who say they will be supplying US television drama series "House of Cards"③ in the high-quality format. LG is also showcasing its new curved smart phone, the LG G Flex, which it describes as its most advanced smart phone yet. Sony is taking the wraps off its latest high definition④ televisions at this year's CES. The company's 2014 announcements include a three-product line with 4K resolution⑤. Sony's Mike Fasulo says the X900B model took center stage at the event, one that Sony used to hype not only its television line, but its entire video line, from acquisition to display. "From our professional 4K cameras to our cinema projectors⑥, Sony has been and continues to be at the forefront of original 4K content creation." Sony says the X900B 4K Ultra HDTV offers improved 4K picture capabilities and allows for content to be streamed wirelessly with built-in⑦ Wi-Fi. High-definition audio is also being shown off, with Fasulo boasting the benefits that Sony provides with its latest technology. Fasulo says 4K resolution is a short hand way to describe devices or content that has 4,000 pixels. "High-res audio offers three to seven times the information and higher fidelity⑧ than traditional CDs, delivering sound the way the artist meant it to be heard." Meanwhile, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has announced that the media company's popular "House of Cards" series will be streamed over the net in full 4K resolution. Earlier today, while we were busy hanging with some of you fine folks on the latest episode of the Pocketnow Live, a lot was going down elsewhere. Our LG G Flex review was in the final polishing stages; our own Taylor Martin was kicking out some coverage on Motorola's mold-breaking budget wonder, the Moto G; and friend of the show Marques Brownlee was interviewing Dennis Woodside, CEO of Motorola Mobility. All that activity demands a followup, of course, and what better venue for an end-of-week wrapup than the Pocketnow Weekly podcast? We can't think of any, either. So whether you're here for our full and complete thoughts on the LG G Flex, the latest on Motorola's $180 wonder, or the freshest news on how OEMs and carriers are making smartphone ownership easier, you're in the right place. So crack your knuckles and stretch out your smartphone: episode 073 of the Pocketnow Weekly podcast is here for your weekend enjoyment. We at Pocketnow have a lot to be thankful for this week. We're busier than ever, our YouTube channel just passed 500,000 subscribers and we're deep in the planning stages for the new year's big tech expos. But most importantly, we're all still in the business of reporting on mobile gadgets, and that's something we all feel pretty lucky about. On today's late-Friday edition of the Weekly, we'll fill you in on some of the fun stuff coming down the pipe: from our forthcoming LG G Flex review, to wooden Moto X devices hitting shelves, to the future union of Windows RT and Windows Phone. We'll also jaw a little on the Galaxy S 5, HTC M8, and LG G Flex. And then we'll take questions from you in our semi-regular listener mail segment, after talking a little about the LG G Flex. (If those hints aren't landing, we talk a lot about the Flex this week. If you're not hip to the curves, you're gonna have to deal.) So whether you're here for the Flex, the latest on the benchmark-cheating scandal, or rumors on the probably-fake giant iPad, welcome to episode 072 of the Pocketnow Weekly podcast! Whether you're excited, anxious, or apathetic with regard to the fifth-generation Nexus smartphone from Google, you've got to admit it's a big deal. Ever since the class flagship dropped back in January of 2010, Google has used the Nexus program as a showcase of what's possible using the power of stock Android - and more recently, just how affordable that power can be. With an optically-stabilized camera, cutting-edge Snapdragon 800 processor, and many of the other features that made the LG G2 such a significant smartphone, the Nexus 5 stands a good chance of being the most impactful device ever to carry the Nexus name. We've got no shortage of opinions on the device, and they're constantly shifting as we get up-to-the-minute updates from sources as well-known as the AP and as obscure as Yorkshire-based graphics designers. All the news is doing in the intervening time is cooling off, so let's quit the jabbering and get to a very special 90 minutes of Nexus yammering on episode 068 of the Pocketnow Weekly podcast.
