Auferstanden aus Ruinen...hier weiterlesen: https://apolut.net/chinas-wirtschaft-werkbank-der-welt-von-rudiger-rauls/ Hosted on Acast. Frequently Asked Questions: Privacy, Security, and the State of Tech (Early 2025)1. What is "SparkCat" and why is it significant?SparkCat is malware discovered hiding in both the Apple App Store and Google Play. It uses optical character recognition (OCR) to scan users' photo galleries for cryptocurrency wallet recovery phrases and uploads them to attacker-controlled servers. Over 242,000 Android users downloaded infected apps. It highlights the evolving sophistication of malware and the need for increased vigilance, even with apps from reputable sources.2. What is the UK government asking Apple to do, and what are the potential implications? The UK government has reportedly ordered Apple to create a backdoor allowing access to encrypted cloud backups of users worldwide, through a technical capability notice under the Investigatory Powers Act. Apple is likely to discontinue its encrypted storage service in the UK rather than compromise user security globally. If Apple complies, it could set a dangerous precedent for other governments to demand similar access, undermining encryption and weakening security for everyone.3. What is the story about the man trying to buy a landfill, and what does it illustrate?A man is trying to buy a landfill to search for a hard drive containing his lost Bitcoin fortune. While seemingly absurd, it illustrates the very real consequences of poor digital asset management and data security. It highlights the permanence (and potential inaccessibility) of digital assets and the lengths people will go to recover them, even resorting to extreme measures.4. Why is the US considering banning the DeepSeek AI app?The US is considering banning the Chinese AI app DeepSeek due to concerns that it collects data for a foreign government (China). The app pumps data to China Mobile unencrypted, and there are close ties between the company and the Chinese military. This aligns with the US government's broader concerns about foreign-owned apps, especially those from China, posing national security risks due to data privacy and potential surveillance.5. What is the massive brute-force attack targeting VPNs, and how can organizations protect themselves?A large-scale brute-force attack is targeting VPN devices from companies like Palo Alto Networks, Ivanti, and SonicWall, utilizing nearly 2.8 million IP addresses. Attackers are attempting to guess usernames and passwords to gain unauthorized access. To protect edge devices, organizations should change default admin passwords to strong, unique ones, enforce multi-factor authentication (MFA), use allowlists of trusted IPs, and disable web admin interfaces if they are not needed, and also ensure VPN software is fully up to date.6. Why is Google's removal of its pledge not to build AI for weapons or surveillance significant?Google's removal of its pledge not to build AI for weapons or surveillance is a concerning development. It suggests a shift in the company's ethical stance and a willingness to potentially engage in activities that could have negative consequences for human rights and global security. It raises questions about the future direction of AI development and the role of tech companies in shaping its use.7. What is "enshittification" and how does it relate to current tech trends?"Enshittification" refers to the gradual decline of online services as they prioritize profits over user experience. This process involves platforms initially offering value to users, then shifting focus to business customers, and finally exploiting both for maximum profit. Examples include Twitter restricting API access, Facebook prioritizing sponsored content, smart TVs becoming data-hungry ad machines, and Google Assistant's diminishing functionality. It reflects a broader trend of tech companies sacrificing user experience for financial gain.
On February 5, 2025, the DeepSeek chatbot faces scrutiny for potential ties to China Mobile, a Chinese state-owned telecom. Security researchers identified obfuscated code on DeepSeek's login page, suggesting connections to systems run by China Mobile. DeepSeek admits to storing user data in China, raising privacy concerns. The U.S. government has previously sanctioned China Mobile due to national security issues related to its connections with the Chinese military. While no data transfers were detected during security tests, risks remain for some users. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission previously denied China Mobile's operation in the U.S. due to these concerns. Experts highlight that AI systems can expose sensitive personal and business data, increasing risk when affiliated with geopolitical adversaries. An independent analysis confirms a connection between DeepSeek and China Mobile, indicating risks for user engagement with the application.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/news/ Hosted on Acast. Show Notes: Raymond Lei Yin moved to New York after graduating and has worked at Goldman Sachs for over 20 years, primarily in Hong Kong and Shanghai, China. He worked in China with a private fund for three and a half years and for UBS Asset Management as the Head of Asia Pacific and Head of China for the past 6 years. Now retired from UBS Asset Management, Raymond is currently traveling around the world, visiting his parents and enjoying the outdoors. He is also looking for opportunities to get involved with communities, businesses or organizations where he can contribute his expertise. Capital Markets War Stories Raymond shares many war stories from his time in Hong Kong, China, and the capital markets during the financial crisis. He started at Goldman Sachs in New York and eventually moved to Asia. He was a program analyst in 1992 and supported the international trading desk at Goldman. This experience was interesting, as the traders he worked with at the time were hires from Salomon Brothers and Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB). He likens this time to working in a jungle where his goal was to survive each day. Raymond's journey has been filled with challenges and opportunities, but he is now focused on pursuing his passion for learning (especially in AI) and helping other businesses to grow. Working in Equity Capital MarketsRaymond began his career in Hong Kong after realizing that the core part of Goldman's business was financial advisory and trading. He decided to look for a job outside Goldman and was about to resign when he was offered a position by a senior MD looking for a Chinese speaking analyst based in Hong Kong. He flew to London for interviews and was hired to work in equity capital markets, which he knew little about. Equity capital markets is an interesting area that straddles between investment banking and equity sales and trading. Raymond was trained by Eric Dobkin, the man who introduced the concept of the Equity Capital Markets (ECM), which orchestrated IPOs and worked with both issuers and investors to set the price. During the Red Chip Boom in 1993, there was a huge demand for Chinese speaking bankers in Hong Kong, as there were not many Chinese bankers at that time. As the first full-time equity capital markets person based in Hong Kong, Raymond worked tirelessly to keep up with the pace of IPOs. Lesson Learned from the MarketOne lesson that Raymond learned during this time was that the market can be irrational. During the Red Chip Boom, Chinese IPOs were richly valued, due to scarcity of Chinese papers and the high demand for Chinese investments. However, since then, the market has seen several cycles of price fluctuations. To make money in the equity market, he believes that one must be a contrarian, have a long sustained power, and be liquid. In the early 90s, Hong Kong had an open market with many foreign capitals and traditional institutions representing their firms in London or New York. Goldman helped Chinese companies raise money in international capital markets through IPOs, global deposit receipts (GDRs), and convertible bonds (CBs). The Chinese government was involved in these deals, as they were selling their best assets to global investors in exchange for professional management and market discipline. The first deal was with Tsingtao Breweries, a famous beer company, and later with Shanghai Petrochemical and China Mobile and PetroChina. These companies were majority-held by the Chinese government, and Goldman had an edge in winning these deals. Goldman also worked on Korean companies like POSCO Steel and Samsung Electronics, as well as Thai and Indonesian companies. The Asian Financial Crisis The Asian financial crisis occurred in 1997, when the devaluation of the Thai Bhat and Indonesian Rupiah led to a massive attack in Hong Kong markets. For a few days, the entire HK equity market was dominated by one buyer, the Hong Kong government. Raymond saw the government's bid for 100 million shares of Hong Kong telecom got hit within 2 seconds. This could mark the end of capital markets in Hong Kong, as the government was buying the significant part of HK equity market. However, in hindsight this was the single best time to buy Hong Kong equities, as the Hong Kong government made a lot of money that day. In subsequent years, Goldman helped the Hong Kong government sell these stocks at a profit, returning the market to private investors. One company Raymond worked with was PetroChina where Goldman took the company public and Raymond helped to introduce the team management to global investors. It was during the dotcom bubble era, there was ver little investor appetite for oil stocks. Eventually, the IPO was done as a discount valuation. Investors who bought at PetroChina IPO all made money if they hold on to their shares. From Goldman to Private Funds to UBS Asset ManagementRaymond's next move was to the buy side - a China based private fund. He spent three and a half years traveling between Shanghai and Hong Kong to help them set up their international operation, hire people, lease office space, get the Type 9 license, and set up their Hong Kong office. He later joined UBS Asset Management first as Head of China then later as Head of Asia Pacific. He worked at UBS Asset Management for the past 6 years. Influential Harvard Professors and CoursesRaymond shares that his Art History course at Harvard was one of the most useful, as it allowed him to appreciate artwork and visit museums worldwide. He also enjoyed the core course Cultural Revolution taught by Professor Roderick MacFarquar, which was not offered in China. An Assessment of Key 5G-IoT Developments Including GSMA IBM Telco AI Collaboration, Juniper's AI-Native Networking Platform, and Nokia AVA Energy Efficiency. In this episode of The 5G Factor, our series that focuses on all things 5G, the IoT, and the 5G ecosystem as a whole, I look at the top 5G innovations and what's going on that caught my eye in the lead up to MWC24. Key AI and GenAI developments that stand out include the GSMA and IBM collaborating to advance AI skills and adoption using IBM's watsonx platform and training programs, Juniper launches its AI-Native Networking Platform built to optimize AI in assuring comprehensive, enhanced operator and end-user experiences, and Nokia's AVA Energy Efficiency solution targeted at ensuring operators fulfill their strategic sustainability goals. My analytical review spotlighted: GSMA and IBM Pair Up to Boost Telco AI Skills. The GSMA and IBM unveiled a new collaboration to support the adoption and skills of AI in the telecom industry through the launch of GSMA Advance's AI Training program and the GSMA Foundry Generative AI program. The AI training program, the first in a new series of courses by GSMA Advance, seeks to prepare telco decision makers for the AI-era and bridge skills gaps in the telecom industry, by equipping members with skills and knowledge to help leverage Gen AI technologies using watsonx, IBM's AI and data platform with AI assistants. The training program will span a wide range of topics, from fundamental AI principles to specialized Gen AI applications in telecoms. I examine how the GSMA Foundry Generative AI program, by providing GSMA members with access to IBM's watsonx platform, can aid telecom decision makers in diligently exploring industry-specific use cases of Generative AI, including those serving the world's least connected communities, as well as ensuring that risk management is foundational and critical to operationalizing AI. Juniper Unveils AI-Native Networking Platform. Juniper announced its AI-Native Networking Platform, purpose-built to leverage AI to deliver end-to-end operator and end-user experiences. Juniper promotes that it is trained on seven years of insights and data science development. Juniper's AI-Native Networking Platform is designed to unify all campus, branch and data center networking solutions with a common AI engine and Marvis Virtual Network Assistant (or VNA). This can enable end-to-end AI for IT Operations (or AIOps) to be used for deep insight, automated troubleshooting and end-to-end networking assurance. I assess why the new Juniper AI-Native Networking Platform can elevate telco AI strategic objectives by enabling IT teams to transition from maintaining basic network connectivity to delivering secure end-to-end experiences for customers and partners that boost business outcomes. Nokia AVA Energy Efficiency Uses AI/ML to Advance Telco Sustainability. Nokia's Telco AI initiative's aimed at supporting the fulfillment of telco sustainability objectives through its Nokia AVA Energy Efficiency AI solution designed to help operators reduce CO2 emissions and network energy costs. Operators want to meet environmental, sustainability and governance (ESG) goals by optimizing their 5G networks. I expect that operators and their supply chain and value chain partners can commit to proactively addressing the sustainability challenge our society faces. Nokia is collaborating with key partners such as China Mobile in using the TM Forum's Autonomous Networks technology and AI/ML intelligence as well as the Green 5G project to help define a unified energy efficiency standard and delivery methodology. I assess why China Mobile selection of Nokia AVA Energy Efficiency to help reduce energy consumption and control costs without compromising the customer experience is an exemplar on how AI/ML can be enlisted to help mobile operators to fulfill their long-term sustainability goals.

In this episode of The 5G Factor, our series that focuses on all things 5G, the IoT, and the ecosystem as a whole, I'm joined by my colleague and fellow analyst, Todd Weiss, for a look at the top 5G developments and what's going on that caught our eye. Our discussion centered on: Major CSP CapEx Snapshot: Spotlight on AT&T, DT/T-Mobile, Verizon, China Mobile, Vodafone, China Telecom. Global CSP capital expenditures (CapEx) for the rest of 2023 and partially into 2024 have more clarity with the major CSPs providing mixed projections that indicate mostly flat CapEx growth. Notably, T-Mobile's parent, Deutsche Telekom, and Verizon have outlooks that respectively decrease CapEx 24% and 19% from 2022 to 2023 with Verizon cutting more in 2024. We investigate what the implications of the global CSP CapEx situation means for the 5G ecosystem in both the U.S. and other parts of the world. T-Mobile Champions New 5G Carrier Aggregation Capabilities. T-Mobile is championing its new 5G carrier aggregation capabilities, which allows it to combine multiple 5G channels, or carriers, to deliver greater speed and performance. T-Mobile is now merging four 5G channels of sub-6 GHz spectrum – two channels of 2.5 GHz Ultra Capacity 5G, one channel of 1900 MHz and one channel of 600 MHz spectrum that is akin to combining four separate highways into a top performance superhighway. We assess the benefits customers can gain from the new capabilities, especially for 5G SA environments, as well as the competitive implications for the U.S. market. Q2 2023 Earnings: AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon Put Up Good Numbers. AT&T Q2 2023 revenues came in at $29.9 billion, up 0.9% year over year (YoY), Verizon reported Q2 2023 revenue of $32.6 billion, yielding a non-GAAP profit of $1.10 per share, and T-Mobile generated service revenues of $15.7 billion, up 3% YoY. We examine how each of the big three U.S. operators fared across key subscriber and financial categories and where competitive advantages are generated.

The open radio access network (RAN) market recently gained significant U.S. government support when Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel touted open RAN as a way for operators to circumvent network equipment from China-based vendors like Huawei and ZTE. Specifically, Rosenworcel noted the ability for open RAN technology to provide operators with greater access to more secure networking equipment. “In the long run, these systems can help diversify the technology in our networks and grow the market for more secure 5G equipment,” she stated during a speech at a Center for Strategic and International Studies event earlier this year. The U.S. has earmarked billions of dollars to be used to help rip-and-replace existing network infrastructure from China-based vendors, including RAN equipment. The FCC had previously reported America's wireless network infrastructure included at least 24,000 pieces of Huawei or ZTE equipment spanning about 8,400 locations. Most of this work toward open RAN has been under the guidance of the O-RAN Alliance, which is an industry trade group working on technical specifications that foster greater adoption of open RAN equipment. However, that organization has been questioned for its inclusion of some members linked to organizations included on the U.S. Entity List that tracks organizations and individuals considered to support “activities contrary to U.S. national security and/or foreign policy interests.” This issue at one point resulted in Nokia pausing activities with the O-RAN Alliance over concerns about Chinese members' blacklisted status with the U.S. government. The O-RAN Alliance quickly adopted changes to its participation documents and procedures that brought Nokia back into the fold. John Strand, CEO of Strand Consult, stated that this connection should raise concerns over the security structure of open RAN equipment. “What I dislike is that open RAN has been marketed as an alternative to Chinese infrastructure,” Strand said. “Open RAN is just as Chinese as anything else. There's 11 or 12 working committees in [O-RAN Alliance] and China Mobile is either the chair or the vice-chair of nine or 10 of them. China Mobile and 43 other Chinese companies on the U.S. Entity List are key stake holders in [O-RAN Alliance]. … That's an issue.” On this episode of the SDxCentral 7 Layers podcast, Strand provides more insight into those potential concerns and areas where other security challenges could impact the adoption of open RAN architectures. Hello Interactors,The Olympics are in full swing. I admit I’m staying up later than I probably should be, but I’m a sucker for the Olympics. Yes it’s strange seeing a white strip of snow down a brown windy hill or watching big air competitions against a dystopian industrial waste site, but hey, that’s Beijing! But maybe I’m being too judgmental. Surely there’s more than meets the eye.As interactors, you’re special individuals self-selected to be a part of an evolutionary journey. You’re also members of an attentive community so I welcome your participation. Please leave your comments below or email me directly. Now let’s go…THE GU GLUEJubilant in her successful landing, the Chinese skier put on the brakes spraying snow over the blue padded barriers as the camera centered her in the frame. She had just landed her first jump in the Olympics’ big air competition. She pulled off her goggles and beamed a big, immaculate toothy smile into the camera. My first thought was, “This girl is not Chinese.” I had never heard of Eileen Gu, but that was about to change. She had just landed a right double 1440. That’s four full gravity defying rotations in the air after descending a hill 20 stories high and then launching off a curved ramp pointed to the sky. She was the first woman to land a similar double cork 1440 just two months prior. That prompted the French skier, Tess Ledeux, to counter in January by being the first woman to land a 1620 – four and a half rotations.Ledeux managed to land that same jump in her opening run at the Olympics in Beijing earlier this week and held the top spot until Gu’s third and final jump. While Gu was at the top waiting her turn, her mom called from the stands at the bottom of the hill. Yan Gu introduced Eileen to skiing in Lake Tahoe where she sometimes worked as a ski instructor. She told her daughter to play it safe and stick to the 1440. Eileen responded, “Mom, executive call here, vetoed. I am going to make the 16, and you are going to deal with it.”After visualizing the trick when her eyes closed, arms swaying, shoulders jerking, like a dog running in their sleep, she aimed her skis down the slope. High in the sky, confident in her 1620 launch, Gu grabbed the bottom of her ski – a safety grab – a trick she had never attempted before this run. She landed triumphantly and the judges launched her into first place. As she threw her fist in the air in celebration it was rewarded with a loud cheer from the Chinese fans sprinkled throughout the stadium. Her mom, of course, being one of them.Yan Gu was born in Shanghai and grew up in Beijing. The Olympics are in her home town. Her mom, Eileen’s grandmother, still lives there. When Yan was in her twenties, she did what many other Chinese students did, and continue to do. She sought an education in America. After receiving a degree in chemistry from Peking University in Beijing, she enrolled in a master’s program in biochemistry and molecular biology at Auburn University in the late 80s. She went on to be a research associate at Rockefeller University before going on to earn an MBA at Stanford in 1994. She now works at an investment firm in San Francisco where she specializes in Chinese investments. The director of an extreme outdoor sports high school in Mt. Hood Oregon, Mike Hanley, said “Yan is very pleasant but one of the most intense human beings I have ever met in my life. She smiles and tells you how great you are. But then you find out, after the fact, what the requests are. She loves her daughter and wants her daughter to get priority.”Getting priority attention from coaches and trainers in America means paying more money. Extorsion? Maybe. But money talks. Yan, a single parent, was willing to pay whatever it took to secure the right training to match her daughter’s ability and her own drive to insure her child’s success. Not many parents of talented kids can afford to do this without striking deals with big name extreme sports brands, like Red Bull or Burton, on behalf of their kids. Child labor? Maybe. But it pays the bills. But Yan has been off the hook for paying much at all since her daughter started striking her own lucrative modelling and endorsement contracts. She’s was a millionaire before hitting 18. She not only landed Red Bull, but Cadillac, Apple’s Beats by Dre headphones, Tiffany’s, Louis Vuitton and Victoria’s Secret. Those are some big names. But in China she’s also paid to represent the Bank of China, China Mobile, a milk company, and Starbucks of China. She is estimated to command $2.5 million per deal. With over 20 modelling, spokesperson, and endorsement deals she must be worth over $50 million dollars at age 18. And that was before she won the gold medal. In addition to being beautiful, talented, and rich, she is also smart. She scored 1580 on the SAT out of a perfect score of 1600, was the first to graduate early at her private high school in the Bay area, and will attend Stanford next fall. Oh, and did I mention she plays the piano and was one of the top distance runners in the state of California before turning her attention to the Olympics? She is what overly competitive parents the world over wish their kids to be. Sorry kids of demanding parents, Eileen has set the bar high. And for Eileen, good luck living through the onslaught of Western chauvinism, racism, and ethnocentrism. Not to mention a healthy dose of wealth, ability, and beauty resentment and jealousy.Gu decided, supposedly with her mother’s urging, to compete for China three years ago when she turned 15. She had grown up fluidly splitting her time between China and Chinese language and culture and the U.S. and American culture. As she said in a press conference this week, “in the US, I’m American, and when I’m in China, I’m Chinese”. But reporters, mostly male, weren’t satisfied with the answer. The English sports reporter, Oliver Brown, thought that line was “a cute line, but sadly impractical, for the simple reason that China does not recognise dual citizenship.” Gu refuses to indulge reporters on admitting whether or not she renounced her U.S. citizenship or whether the Chinese government made an exception for the girl the Chinese media call “Snow Princess”. Insistence by Western media, and many others, on making a bi-racial teenage woman pick one side or the other will likely not relent any time soon.REPRESENTATION ORIENTATIONI’m reflecting on my own initial reaction to learning Gu wasn’t representing America. My first thought, like many, is she’s a product of American culture, education, coaching, and lavish ski schools and resorts. Other athletes are saying the same thing. Jen Haduk, a Winter X Games gold medalist and a former member of the U.S.A Women’s team, told the New York Post that “[Eileen Gu] became the athlete she is because she grew up in the United States, where she had access to premier training grounds and coaching that, as a female, she might not have had in China…I think she would be a different skier if she grew up in China. This makes me sad.”Eileen Gu admits the access she had to snow, coaching, and opportunity allowed her to pursue her dreams and potential. In an interview on NBC, they show her giving a speech in middle school on the impact Title Nine had on women and sport. She also reveals in that interview that every trick she learned in America she took to China where throngs of young Chinese girls were eager to learn from her.A Chinese-American girl fluent in Mandarin teaching Chinese girls to do tricks on skis also helped her become the athlete she is. Eileen Gu would not have been the skier she is had she grown up in China, but Chinese girls will now grow up trying to become the skier she is. And you can bet the Chinese government will see to it they have what they need to succeed. In fact, some believe it was the money and support China offered Eileen Gu three years ago that may have contributed to her decision to represent that country. An offer the American team I’m sure could not match. Another Yan Gu deal made on behalf of her daughter? Perhaps. But you can bet other parents of bi-racial or dual citizenship kids would be tempted to do the same.Eileen Gu was born with rare athletic abilities. She was also born fearless. It was one of the reasons her mother made sure she had ski lessons. She could see as a young child that her daughter lacked the kind of fear most of us have skiing fast down a mountain of snow and ice. After suffering a concussion as a young teenager on a practice run, an injury that put her out of commission for a week, she couldn’t wait to get back to jumping. These natural abilities cannot be taught regardless of where you grow up.And we shouldn’t be so quick to diminish Eileen’s lived experience as a Chinese-American routinely visiting her family in China. While it has only accounted for five or six years of the 18 she’s been alive, it’s undeniably part of who she is, what she does, how she thinks, and what she believes. But I, like so many others, didn’t consider that in my initial reaction and judgement of Eileen Gu. I jumped to seeing her as representing a country and only after did I question my reaction and come to see her as a human being. As geographers Alan Latham and David Conradson wrote in 2003, even the field of human geography is “Dominated by an obsession with the politics of representation.” Little interest has historically been given to “considerations of the place, or the productiveness, of practice” by individual human beings.By seeing Eileen Gu as Chinese-American, bi-racial, or dual citizen can lead to objectification and categorization. There is a growing understanding and recognition in the social sciences that race categories often lead to either feelings of fear or desire. For example, unkept asylum seekers crossing the border from Latin America may elicit fear leading many to want to kick them out. Meanwhile, a super-model, Chinese-American, Olympic gold medal athlete elicits a desire to claim her as ‘theirs’.As we sit and watch Eileen Gu smile for the camera after performing death defying feats with sublime grace or see a magazine cover graced with her face, we are reduced to dwelling on her race. Those of us in the West have grown up being barraged with pictures, paintings, movies, comics, and text that portrays races different from our own in insufficient and often inaccurate ways. For China and the Chinese it’s a form of Orientalism. The word Orient is derived from a Latin word oriēns which can mean anything originating from the East, including the sky, sun, or lands and people East of Europe. Orient was thought of as the East and it’s antonym, Occident, was thought of as the West. This word and it’s denotations and connotations allowed Western scholars, writers, artists, and designers to divide the world between ‘us’, the West, and ‘them’ the East. The Orient was portrayed as a place far away with exotic customs, cultures, and people – ‘Other-than’ or ‘Other-worldly’; a place to be explored, conquered, and diminished. Consequently, its people were portrayed as ‘Others’ who were to be either ‘saved’, slaved, exploited, or killed. It’s a portrayal that continues to this day.James Bond is the suave savior from the West who is shaken by exotic foreigners but stirred to action through acts of either violence or sex. And while we know it’s fiction, it’s filmed in a pseudo-authentic way that often includes a wink or a nod from Bond into the camera. Indiana Jones does the same thing. Steven Spielberg told it’s creator, George Lucas, it’s a “James Bond film without the hardware.”MIND AND BODY EQUALITYThe late Jamaican-British sociologist, Stuart Hall led efforts beginning in the 1960s to include race and gender in the scholarship of cultural studies. He observed in 1993 that social scientists, including post-colonial geographers, continue to downplay the role text, images, and symbols play in how we relate to the representation of cultures foreign to Western tradition. He believed representation should be considered within a wider cultural context. Hall believed the “processes of artistic production and ownership, use of media technologies, practices of distribution, government legislation and regulation, as well as different forms of audience consumption across the globe, influence how an image is ‘read’ and understood.”For highly produced imagery like Bond films or pictures of Eileen Gu in an advertisement, there is an intent by the producer of the image to encode a particular message to the viewer. But how viewers then decode and interpret that message is as variable and complex as humanity itself. The geographical context that informs an individual consumer’s identity influences the meaning of that message. The imagery in Bond Films or stylized photos of Gu also don’t provide a voice to the displaced or marginalized people that make up the bulk of these ‘foreign’ populations. The West can use the power of imagery to impose meaning which only perpetuates the idea that the West controls the rest. ‘We’ hold dominion over ‘them’. As geographer Anoop Nayak puts it, “The power of whiteness to continually narrate the existence of racialised Others is a violent reminder of the privilege that comes with being located as the architects and inheritors of modernity.”Eileen Gu just may be fashioning these Western media mechanisms into a weapon of her own. She has the potential to use her talent, intelligence, and good looks – and the dominant Western style media platforms – to give voice to those in China who do not. If we’re to believe Eileen Gu, she wants to inspire and empower young Chinese-born girls to use sport as a way to give them a voice. She knows they don’t have Title Nine to help them in China, so she’s using her Chinese language skills and her individual beauty, elegance, intelligence, and grace as a substitute. All under a Chinese flag. She is using the media tools of traditional Western domination not to hush or misconstrue but to crush what oppresses young girls so they can see what they can do.Eileen is outspoken and well spoken. She’s come out against increased Asian hate crime in America and supports the BLM movement. But she remains silent on human rights abuses in China. This really bothers people. Especially reporters. Meanwhile Tesla sells more cars in China than anywhere in the world. Where are the calls for Elon Musk to speak out? Microsoft was the first software company allowed to open an office in China around the same time Eileen’s mom was coming to America. It remains a highly productive, innovative, and influential subsidiary for Microsoft. I’ve witnessed myself. I don’t see reporters demanding Satya Nadella or Bill Gates to come out against China. Eileen, just like Elon, Satya, and Bill, know that to do so means disadvantaging their chances for influence from inside China. Could it be that these Western, mostly male, reporters only see Gu as a two-dimensional, bi-racial American girl? Are they put off by how she expertly and effortlessly dodges their questions? Are they frustrated they can’t dominate this woman, this girl, this Asian-American who can look and sound Western one moment and Chinese the next? When the British reporter Oliver Brown writes how her well crafted and practiced line, “in the US, I’m American, and when I’m in China, I’m Chinese”, came across as ‘cute’ to him, is that not only condescending but patronizing, paternalistic, and misogynist? And did he not politicize, objectify, and perhaps ‘Orientalize’ her by insisting her words were “sadly impractical, for the simple reason that China does not recognise dual citizenship.”? There is nothing simple about any of this. And am I guilty of doing the same when my first reaction was to judge her on her appearance without knowing anything about her, her life, her family, her culture, or her intentions?Who knows what her real citizenship is. Maybe China turned a blind eye to their policy that refuses dual-citizenship. It’s a practical move on their part if it means they get a world renowned Snow Princess Chinese ambassador out of it. I wouldn’t put it passed Eileen and her mom to scheme and arrange such a deal. Her mom is a professional Chinese deal maker, after all. Just as Musk, Nadella, and Gates are. Who knows what arrangements these successful Western businessmen have with China, but you can bet they’re practical. When the ski coach from Oregon – who knows a thing or two about dealing with Eileen and her mom – was pressed on what he thought of Eileen choosing to ski for China he said, “It’s a decision that seems practical and pragmatic, just like every decision she makes.”In the 1880s and 1890s, a French aristocrat interested in the history and sociology of sport toured America and England learning about sports administration. His name was Pierre de Coubertin. He was particularly fascinated by rugby. He believed it best demonstrated how “organised sport can create moral and social strength” and how it could “help to set the mind and body in equilibrium”. As a former rugby player, I concur. He took his learnings back home and with the help of the French government organized the first Olympic committee in 1894. By 1896 the first modern Olympic games took place in Athens. It attracted the largest contingent of international athletes of the time.As I watch the remainder of the Olympics I’m trying to see through the media veils that distort and disorient portrayals of people. Instead of being just another American rooting for Americans, I’m marveling at the athletically gifted, courageous, and tenacious humans participating in ‘organized sports that have shaped their moral strength.’ Maybe if we all do that together we can also build social strength. Watching Eileen Gu twirl through the air while dodging the admonishing stare can be dizzying — and then some. But seeing her as a human first and an athlete second sets my mind and body in equilibrium. Thanks for reading Interplace! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. Today on The Negotiation, Todd speaks with Justin Mallen, Founder, and CEO of Silk Road Telecommunication. He shares what it is like being one of the few successful foreign entrepreneurs in China, having entered the market during a time when it was far from the economic powerhouse that it is today.Justin says, “China's telecom infrastructure is owned and operated by three incredibly large, state-owned enterprises: China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Mobile. Back then, they had the one key resource which you needed: networking; and they did not want people in their space.”Justin defines success, at least in the early days, simply as “being able to create a business that had staying power”. SRT is a capital intensive venture that was founded in 2000. It is a thriving operation today, but the road to get to this point was fraught with scores of challenges in the beginning. Primarily, it was a matter of turning these carriers—and other gatekeepers—from competitors into partners. Justin's prediction that the internet would take the world by storm in the near future was a driving force that paid off in spades. As a data center business, SRT began with infrastructure as a service as its sole focus: they build, operate, maintain, and own the buildings that house all the servers for the internet. Today, these sites serve as the “heartbeat” for tech companies such as Alibaba, Tencent, and JD.com. Because of recent, rapid advancements in technology, today, SRT also offers platforms as a service (cloud, data, and big data analytics vendors) as a necessary additional layer atop infrastructure.Information traveled incredibly slowly in the early 1990s China. Justin's initial goal was to simply speed things up. The biggest strength he saw in the country's carriers was that they were very eager to invest in building up the infrastructure and capabilities of the internet. The goal of SRT was to develop the infrastructure so that the cost of delivery to consumers could be minimized. Over time, this grew the number of internet users in China to over 900 million in the first quarter of 2020.5G takes the latency—the time it takes for data to move between a device and the servers—down to zero. It makes connectivity much smoother and effectively instant. Driverless cars are incredibly prone to accidents if they use 4G, with its latency of 40 milliseconds. 5G removes this barrier, as well as those of many other industries, which allows for further innovations such as telemedicine and remote surgery.
