Lucy Kilgore has her bags packed for her escape from her rural Tennessee upbringing, but a drunken mistake forever tethers her to the town and one of its least-admired residents, Jeptha Taylor, who becomes the father of her child. Together, these two young people work to form a family, though neither has any idea how to accomplish that, and the odds are against them in a place with little to offer other than tobacco fields, a bluegrass bar, and a Walmart full of beer and firearms for the hunting season. Their path is harrowing, but Lucy and Jeptha are characters to love, and readers will root for their success in a novel so riveting that no one will want to turn out the light until they know whether this family will survive. In our very first live episode, recorded at our National Convention in Dallas on October 10, Patti sits down with Lisa Borders, president of the WNBA. In this candid interview, Lisa discusses how growing up in Atlanta in the 1960s—the “cradle of the civil rights movement”—affected her career path and leadership style; how being the first person of color to be a cheerleader at her high school laid a template for what would be her life’s work; and how she navigated her way through the political, non-profit, and for-profit worlds, including the WNBA. We know you’ll be inspired by Lisa’s story, her advice, and her words of wisdom. Remember, she says, “Failure is not fatal; it’s feedback.”   To see the video recording of this episode, head to womenleadersincollegesports.org/podcast.   Head to womenleadersincollegesports.org for more about us and to become a member!    Follow us at fb.com/WomenLeadersCS, and on Twitter and Instagram @WomenLeadersCS.

The Olympics are here and as I head to Rio, Edge of Sports has David W. Larkin, an attorney who focuses on the corruption of sports organizations like the International Olympic Committee, about the decision to not suspend Russia from the Olympics. We ask him which is more corrupt: the IOC or FIFA? His analysis may surprise you. We also have some "choice words" about the Rio Olympics - of course - and why ten years ago, almost no one thought having Brazil as a host was a bad idea. But I start the show by speaking about the Khan family, and remember when a Gold Star Mother was attacked ten years ago because she stood up to the war that took her son's life. I speak about Cindy Sheehan. The Just Stand Up award goes to activist WNBA players who refused to bow to NBA and WNBA chiefs Adam Silver and Lisa Borders, and won.David W. A handful of sentences form the opening chapter of Lisa Borders' novel The Fifty-First State, setting her characters on an inexorable course towards tragedy and connection, and sending her readers into a world of lush detail and intensely-felt emotion. Hallie and Josh Corson share a father but little else—until a grisly highway accident at the novel's outset leaves them both without parents. Forced to come together on the family's struggling tomato farm, Josh and Hallie grow in ways they never expected, and discover that even in death’s wake, lives can change for the better.

Lisa Borders joins the show to talk about her new novel, The Fifty-First State! It's a fine book about mismatched half-siblings brought together by calamity, set in an area of New Jersey overlooked by most everyone but its residents. Lisa and I have a fun conversation about her work and influences, how her science background informs her writing process (she's a part-time cytotechnologist), why form has to rise from story, how to teach novel-writing, why she stands by Jonathan Franzen's novels, how a Michael Cunningham short story changed her life, and whether southern NJ should secede and become America's fifty-first state.
