What kind of celebrity might you see at a game? Why do they attend them? How does this enhance (or take away) from the experience? And how effective a pull is celebrity attendance for bringing in new fans? Throughout the episode, we seek to answer these questions with the help of three experts: To help us understand what moments are deemed worthy of capturing, we spoke Michael Lawrie, Senior Manager of Sports Operations at Getty Images; to guide us through the VIP experience we have Michelle Kajiwara, Senior Vice President of Premium Business and Events at Crypto.com Arena at AEG, and to offer an academic perspective on why it is we are so fascinated by celebrities, we spoke to Dr. Donna Rockwell, clinical psychologist and founder of Already Famous. As a sports league, the entity functions similarly to a startup with Rabil spearheading a staff of likeminded individuals whose goals are to help change the world of sports. The PLL has since been ranked a Top 10 Most Innovative Company in Sports by Fast Company, and touts Rabil as the first player in sports to simultaneously be an executive of the same league. The PLL will visit nine other cities this season including San Jose, Washington D.C., Albany, Minneapolis, and Philadelphia, among others. During the 2020 Summer, the PLL completed their second season – a condensed version of the PLL Championship Series, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The three-week tournament featured the league's seven teams competing in a fourteen-game group play format to determine seeding for the following week's single-elimination tournament. The tournament marked the first sports entity to find a safe solution to resume play, given the effects of COVID-19. Games were broadcasted domestically & internationally in 12 countries through the PLL's deal with NBC Sports, filling the programming holes left by the 2020 Olympics. Over the three-week tournament, the official PLL social accounts garnered 161 million impressions, 17.5 million views and 90 million minutes watched. Rabil has influenced the sport at every level, winning championships and MVP's both collegiately and professionally, as well as becoming a two-time World Lacrosse Champion with Team USA. Off the field, Rabil has also found success as a business owner and investor, acquiring capital and operating Rabil Events and Rabil Ventures. Rabil has also volunteered extensively with Harlem Lacrosse through the Premier Lacrosse League's community arm, PLL Assists. Harlem Lacrosse actively recruits special education students and students identified by school administrators as most vulnerable to academic decline and school dropout. As a result, the program serves high poverty and special education students at rates that surpass those of their standard school sites. Rabil graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 2008, where he played collegiate lacrosse, and currently resides in Marina Del Rey, California.

How has one book that barely mentions sports reshaped the game of baseball? Joe Lemire--senior writer at SportTechie and contributor to the New York Times and MLB Network--takes Julie and Eve out to the sandlot to discuss the impact that Thinking, Fast and Slow--a book about flawed human reasoning and decision-making written by Nobel Prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman--has had on our national pastime. They discuss the advantages of countering cognitive bias on and off the field; how the superstitions of baseball can coexist with a statistics-based analysis; and what happened when a biomathematician left his job at NASA to become a baseball executive and almost blew his career on the first day. Julie and Eve also learn the distinction between fruit salad and chocolate cake, cognitively speaking--and what that has to do with baseball. He delivered when it counted most, recording hat tricks in two postseason games for the Islanders. Hatchard's career on the ice was cut short due to concussion-related trauma. The physical, mental and emotional toll put him in a downward spiral. After years of therapy at the Mayo Clinic, he was unable to find a way to reconcile the damage that had been done to his body. Fortunately, he hired a life coach, which eventually led him to closely follow Tony Robbins and other motivational speakers. Hatchard embraced a new way of thinking that transformed his life. Jay DeMerit was not a household name in American soccer when he first started his professional playing career. As a matter of fact, he was not even drafted or signed by any Major League Soccer clubs following his graduation from college in 2001. When most athletes would have called it quits, DeMerit doubled-down on his professional soccer aspirations and moved to England in an attempt to find a club to play for. Despite this uncommon approach to becoming a professional athlete, DeMerit found his way onto a club in the ninth tier of English soccer. From Southall, DeMerit underwent a meteoric rise through the ranks of English Soccer, eventually finding himself with Watford. On May 21, 2006, in the play-off final, DeMerit headed in the game's first goal and was named Man of the Match as Watford gained promotion to the Premier League by defeating Leeds United 3–0. DeMerit not only achieved his dream of playing in the Premier League, he went on to cap for the USMNT 25 times, including a CONCACAF Gold Cup win and appearances in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In 2011, DeMerit was also the first player signed by the Vancouver Whitecaps FC for their entrance in MLS, where he played four seasons. This non-traditional journey of professional success now fuels DeMerit off the pitch as the founder of Rise + Shine; a masterclass-type platform catered towards Gen Z. Marques Colston made a living as a wide receiver in the NFL by creating separation and getting behind defenses. During his 10-year career with the New Orleans Saints, he became one of Drew Brees's favorite targets, racking up more than 700 receptions to go with 72 touchdowns. In Super Bowl XLIV, Colston helped bring home the Lombardi Trophy with seven catches for 83-yards. Today, Colston has taken his separation mindset to the classroom. As an adjunct professor at the University of New Orleans, he's helping the next generation of athletes become business leaders. Colston has gained an entire curriculum of insights since his NFL retirement in 2016, but his passion for business started early in his playing career; he often read business books in the offseasons, especially when he was healing from multiple injuries that sidelined him early in his career. We first started talking with Marques about his off-field pursuits more than two years ago at a SportTechie conference. It was that conversation that helped inspire the creation of The Game Plan. Roger Mason Jr. has always been ahead of his time. As a professional basketball player, he spent time with seven different NBA franchises, most notably the Chicago Bulls, Washington Wizards, San Antonio Spurs and New Orleans Hornets. Similar to the way NBA players switch teams frequently today, Mason Jr. bet on himself through short-term deals that maximized his earnings, including stints in Greece and Israel after his rookie deal expired. He also sought out markets that would raise his profile off the court, leading to his signing with the New York Knicks in 2010. While playing, Mason Jr. began to show an insatiable curiosity for business opportunities off the court. This led to his ascension within the NBPA, where he eventually became deputy executive director alongside Michelle Roberts, the NBPA's current executive director. Toward the end of his playing career and during his time with the NBPA, Mason Jr. had an idea for a player-led media platform that would enable athletes to tell their stories to fans directly. This was before social media had become ubiquitous, and it led to the eventual company he founded in 2014, Vaunt. Today, Roger Mason Jr. is do-founder and CEO of Vaunt, which creates in-person, once-in-a-lifetime experiential events and streams high-quality content. The company provides fans with access to professional athletes, while also creating opportunities for players to build and monetize their own brands. Ryan Mundy was a hard-hitting safety for the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants and Chicago Bears who played in two Super Bowls and hoisted the Lombardi Trophy with the Steelers in 2009. He didn't always have the best on-field reputation, having been fined multiple times in his career for illegal hits, but he's ultimately shown himself to be a mature, innovative and humble person who is working to have a positive impact on the world. Mundy, who retired from the NFL in 2014, was one of the first pro athletes to dip his toes in venture capital, including investing in bitcoin as early as 2016. Today, he has moved across the table as an entrepreneur. Mundy is the founder and CEO of Alkeme, a platform for mental health and wellness that focuses especially on the Black community. A former National Player of the Year at the University of North Carolina and two-time NCAA Women's College Cup champion, Yael Averbuch went on to have a 16-year professional soccer career, including significant time with the US Women's National Team. Averbuch took her leadership on the pitch and in the locker room to the board room where she played an instrumental role in the creation of the NWSLPA in 2017, serving as Executive Director until 2020. Today, Averbuch is CEO and founder of Techne Futbol, a soccer training app she launched in 2016. Always looking to incorporate new skills and techniques in the development of her own game, Averbuch found herself doing small group and individual training. Looking to expand those efforts and reach more players, Averbuch was naturally pulled into the creation of training videos on YouTube and a weekly email she sends out every Sunday featuring a new training drill. This evolution from player to teacher laid the foundation for what is now Techne Futbol; a system that helps players get better. Few professional hockey players have experienced sustained success on the ice like Hilary Knight. A native of Palo Alto, California, Knight followed in the footsteps of her future Team USA teammate and past TGP guest, Angela Ruggiero, when she attended Choate Rosemary Hall. Following boarding school, Knight went on to lead the Wisconsin Badgers to two National Championship games, including an NCAA Championship trophy in her Sophomore season, a year when she became the Badgers record-holder for points, goals and power-play goals in one season. She extended that success into her Olympic career where she won silver medals in 2010 and 2014, and most recently a gold medal in the 2018 winter Olympics. Knight has been a professional hockey player for nine years, and the game has become her personal mission off the ice as an outspoken leader rallying against subpar playing conditions and compensation. Rather than settle for less, Knight, along with more than 200 other professional hockey players walked away from the game to form the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association (PWHPA). Today, Knight has teamed up with other players on the 2021 Dream Gap Tour, a group of PWHPA players traveling around the US and Canada to call attention to the game of Women's Hockey. The tour kicks off later this month on February 28 with the first-ever professional women's hockey game hosted at Madison Square Garden. You can follow Hilary Knight on Twitter and Instagram. Isaiah Kacyvenski is one of the most decorated Ivy League football players of all time. While at Harvard, he won Ivy League Rookie of the Year and then followed that up with All-Ivy League first-team honors over his final three seasons. He received the Nils V. “Swede” Nelson Award, which is given to "best, most academically talented" football player in New England, and also the Harvard University Male Athlete of the Year following his senior season. After Harvard, Kacyvenski was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in 2000, becoming the highest draft pick in Harvard history (fourth round, No. 199 overall. Beyond his contributions as a linebacker, he was a pivotal player on the Seahawks' special teams and helped in their run to Super Bowl XL. More impressive than any on-field accomplishment, however, is what Kacyvenski overcame just to have the opportunity to play football in the first place. He dealt with bouts of homelessness as a kid and the tragic loss of his mother during his senior year of high school. That power of will is what keeps driving him as he enters the next phase of his professional career. Last year, Kacyvenski announced a $55 million dollar early-stage venture fund focused on health, wellness, media and content; the fund is called Will Ventures. Along with fellow former Harvard football player Brian Reilly, as well as other Harvard student-athlete graduates Kirby Porter and Alexis Nocolia, Kacyvenski is seeking out “relentless entrepreneurs with the will to change the world.” About The Game Plan The Game Plan is a weekly SportTechie podcast hosted by venture capitalists Jay Kapoor and Tim Katt. A walk-on at Kansas State who was taken in the second round of the 2002 NFL draft by the New York Jets, Jon McGraw went on to play 10 pro seasons in the NFL, making stops with the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs along the way. For all his success, including winning the prestigious Ed Block Courage Award in 2011, the process of playing football wasn't always a great experience for the hard-nosed safety. The daily grind took its toll and he felt his focus was suffering. Toward the end of his career, McGraw stumbled across the concept of Process-Oriented Psychology. Instead of focusing on the end result, he learned to find purpose in the day-to-day aspects of the job and found joy in the sport again. This ultimately led McGraw to pursue an entrepreneurial path after football, sharing what he'd learned with other pro athletes and corporate executives working in high-stress environments. He co-founded Vision Pursue alongside his business partner, Russ Rausch, a former hedge fund operator. Today, Vision Pursue works with high-profile clients in sports and business, including the Miami Heat, the San Francisco 49ers, and FedEx. When Jason Campbell walked away from football in 2015, it was not for a lack of interest from NFL teams. Instead, Campbell had fallen out of love with the game and was struggling with the idea of being relegated to backup roles on struggling teams that weren't going to be in Super Bowl contention. Fast forward to today and we see an older, wiser version of Campbell who stands by his decision to retire. While learning from veterans such as Mark Brunell during his playing career, Campbell laid the groundwork for life after football by creating business relationships and being smart with his money. Jason is now an investor, entrepreneur, and podcast host. But he hasn't left football completely behind. He now also works as a football analyst for his alma mater, Auburn University, where he led the Tigers to an undefeated season in 2004. We cover all this and more in The Game Plan, including one early investment opportunity in a well-known ridesharing service that served as a hard-won learning experience for Campbell. Huge thanks to our mutual friend Albert Sye at Mean Circle for making the introduction to Jason and for being a great friend and supporter of the show! To tell Femi Ayanbadejo that he can't do something is to place a bet on his success. Known for his smash-mouth, do-anything approach to playing running back in the NFL for 11 seasons, Ayanbadejo has carried his tenacity off the playing field into entrepreneurship as founder of HealthReel—a virtual health assessment app powered by NASA technology. During his playing career with five teams, mostly with Baltimore and Arizona, Ayanbadejo connected with the athletic trainers and medical personnel in ways that most players don't. Those relationships and his obsessiveness about health and achieving optimal performance inspired him to start his own gym and human performance center. His curiosity still not quenched, he sold his equity in the company and enrolled at Johns Hopkins University, where he earned an MBA focused on Digital Health. Today, Ayanbadejo aspires to bring impactful and inspiring health data to everyone who wants it! As outside general counsel to the USWNT players' association, Rocky, the older Collis brother, has led the way in counseling the players in a highly publicized legal battle with U.S. Soccer around equal pay and better playing conditions. His work has led him to also join forces with Megan Rapinoe, Christen Press, Tobin Heath and Meghan Klingenberg (a former guest on the podcast) to create a new for-good apparel company, Re—Inc. Luke, meanwhile, has had a bent for making a societal impact off the field by serving as a field organizer for Stacey Abrams' Georgia gubernatorial campaign in 2018. This was on the heels of leading the Philadelphia Soul to back-to-back ArenaBowl Championships in the previous two years. Today, the brothers have reunited on a new mission that is driven by their mutual love of sport. Motivated by the expert training and evaluation they sought out as professional athletes, they now hope to democratize elite coaching for all athletes. They have joined forces with renowned biomechanics coach Tom House and elite mental performance coach Jason Goldsmith on a new training app called Mustard. Rocky is the CEO; Luke is the Launch COO and Head of Product. Hearing Tina Charles recount the emotions she felt when meeting a man whose life had been saved by one of the 425-plus portable AED devices that her foundation has purchased and installed to date, it's easy to forget that she's in the middle of what is surely a Hall-of-Fame basketball career. Charles, 31, is the Center on the Washington Mystics. A two-time national college champion at UConn, she was the first pick of the 2010 WNBA draft and won Rookie of the Year that season. Two years later, she was league MVP. She's a seven-time All-Star and two-time Olympic gold medalist. Her impact goes far beyond the hardwood. She's active with her non-profit organization, speaks out for social justice reform, and has even produced her first film. This week's episode of The Game Plan features New Orleans Pelicans shooting guard JJ Redick, who is also the co-founder of ThreeFourTwo Productions. In our conversation . . . Redick explains how he had to move his off-season training session to 7 a.m. to accommodate a busy day that included speaking to a Stanford Business School class in the morning and hosting two guests of his own later in the day—not to mention making sure that his sons, 4-year-old Kai and 6-year-old Knox, got enough dad time. Redick tells the story behind him becoming the first active professional athlete to launch his own podcast. While commonplace today, it was anything but for athletes to publicly explore their interests outside the game just four short years ago, much less broadcast them to the world. Fast forward to today: Redick has recorded more than 125 podcast episodes and has over 170,000 subscribers on YouTube. His new show, The Old Man and The Three, features guests such as NBA teammates like Zion Williamson, presidential candidates and Hollywood stars. Few media personalities, much less professional athletes, are able to unlock the human and emotional side of their guests like Redick. When asked what makes this possible, he said, "Reps are the biggest key . . . you get a few under your belt, you figure out what works, what doesn't work, and you get a little bit of confidence. You feel stronger about your own creative performance and you keep building and keep growing from there.” It is through meticulous dedication to his craft that Redick has grown such a passionate following. To that end, we also discuss the importance of him owning his production company, which will produce new shows along with his co-host, Tommy Alter, and production partner, Cadence13. As for his basketball career and his upcoming 15th season, Redick has no plans of slowing down anytime soon: “The one obsession that I've never gotten sick of, that I've never gotten tired of, the rabbit hole that I have no desire to ever climb out of—that's playing basketball. Shooting a basketball and watching that ball go through the net . . . there's no better feeling in the world to me.” You can follow JJ Redick on Twitter (@JJ_redick) and Instagram (@JJredick). Years ahead of his time, Jay-Z declared, “I'm not a businessman; I'm a business, man.” Much in the same way, the greatest athletes in the world are more than just entertainers on the courts and fields—they are brands and enterprises unto themselves. Properly cultivated, athletes can position themselves to turn the millions they make playing sports into potentially billions in generational wealth. Those are the crossover names we remember long after they've stopped playing. The Magic Johnsons. The Roger Staubachs. The Michael Jordans. SUBSCRIBE HERE: Don't Miss an Episode of The Game Plan Those kinds of entrepreneurial and investment journeys are at the heart of The Game Plan, which is joining forces with SportTechie to bring you Season 2 starting Nov. 23. We'll drop a new episode every Monday, highlighting insights from athletes who are making the transition from people who simply endorse checks to those who write them. The conversations that co-hosts Jay Kapoor and Tim Katt have with athletes are always wide-ranging, highlighting their successes and working through the challenges they face when it comes to business ventures and investments. But our bottom line with this podcast isn't about money—it's about giving you an open and honest look at what makes our guests more than just athletes.

He represents professional athletes, musicians, producers, songwriters, DJs, fashion designers as well as professional gamers, esports organizations and teams.
