And what can future ministers learn from their predecessors? First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on November 6th 2022 Over the past couple of years, the BBC has been taking several of its landmark television plays off the shelf, blowing the dust off them, and treating viewers to BBC4 who are so inclined to a chance to see some of the highlights of its often influential and sometimes controversial flagship drama series from the 1970s and early 1980s PLAY FOR TODAY, which was the successor to the WEDNESDAY PLAY strand which had brought one-off dramas and often original works for television into the living rooms of the nation in the latter half of the 1960s. At the same time, recently the BFI have released several sets of these plays on home media, all of which are well worth seeking out, if the one-off television play, a section of television's output that is all but gone from our screens nowadays is something you are interested in. The BFI have also just released a collection featuring many of the works of one of the key contributors to both THE WEDNESDAY PLAY and PLAY FOR TODAY, the Wallasey-born director and film-maker ALAN CLARKE, who brought a whole range of often hard-hitting productions to the screen including THE LAST TRAIN THROUGH HARECASTLE TUNNEL, ROAD, SCUM, and THE FIRM across an eclectic career which was sadly curtailed far too early by his death, at the age of fifty-four, in July 1990. Sadly this new collection is not quite as comprehensive as some previous releases, which is a point mentioned by one of our regular contributors to VISION ON SOUND, SANDY McGREGOR who, as he has been known to before, also invited along a new voice for the show, MATT DODSON, to add to our ever-widening pool of television knowledgeables. They are both huge fans of live theatre, and also big fans of watching the sort of television that includes this more serious kind of dramatic output, so it was an absolute joy to discuss their mutual appreciation of the work of ALAN CLARKE in this episode. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

The news is still going on about Boris Johnson's Xmas party.....all this is doing now is giving no mark M.P.s the opportunity to get their faces on TV all saying the same thing with none of them coming up with any alternative solutions.....definitely time to MOVE ON. The easiest job in the world is be a critic or a football pundit....we have professional film critics who grace us with their opinions....and pundits who sit round a table and discuss a match we have just watched....and get highly paid for doing so....talk about easy money.....and this comes out of our TV licence....which will no doubt soon go up because of the shortage of oil or something equally as stupid. Main roads are being altered to include wide cycle lanes.....how long before the accidents start?....not to mention idiots on electric bikes. The local council's latest brilliant idea is to increase the charge of emptying your garden waste bin from 35 pounds to 50 pounds a year which hasn't gone down too well with our ratepayers.....as the said bins are only emptied every two weeks and don't require emptying during the winter.... are they having a laugh.......what will obviously happen is folk will fly tip their grass all over the place.....the council complain that they are short of money...try checking out the salaries of some of the bosses who are surplus to requirements. We have a terrible war going on but 17 minutes of space is required on the BBC News to watch Johnny Depp mumbling away in court with his marital problems...WHO CARES?............... put him on my list.I watched another episode of the Jimmy Saville scandal......which left me totally baffled......he walks around with this huge cigar in his mouth....takes it out and mutters a load of nonsense...and shoves it back in his mouth....they could find no evidence of his alleged sexual misconduct until he died....then we get 400 accusers coming out of the woodwork.....to me the bloke was a total nut case. A film called "The Magnet" has recently been on the telly....it was made in 1951 and stars James `Fox as a young lad and was filmed in and around Wallasey on Merseyside where I was born......it was fascinating to see how the area has changed since I was a six year old.....great film. This week...for a change...instead of choosing some of the worst records ever made I would like to treat you to the best instrumental ever made....it dates back to the fifties and I still never tire of hearing it....a masterpiece....it is by The Ventures and is called "Walk Don't Run"......

A few musings on how UFO's keep cropping up in the area in which I live. On the morning of Tuesday 3 May 1977 at around 1am, what must surely rank as the largest UFO ever reported was allegedly seen over Wirral.A cabby working for CC Taxis was parked up on Wallasey's Penkett Road, waiting for a woman to pay her fare. The moon was full and Penkett Road was bathed in its silvery light. A shadow fell across the neighbourhood and the cabby looked up to see an immense black disc-shaped object blotting out the moon as it slowly moved east towards the river. The woman the cabby had been waiting for came out of her house to pay her fare and also saw the gigantic object overhead. A man walking his dog on nearby Caithness Drive saw the gigantic UFO and at the exact same time on the other side of Wirral, a young courting couple who had been sitting in a parked car on Caldy Road also witnessed the eclipse of the full moon by the UFO. As more and more sightings of the giant in the sky came in, it was established that the craft must have been around ten miles in diameter. It was seen by people in Liverpool, Chester, Flint and Ellesmere Port. What are we to make of this? This video is also part of the show TGIF https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLI6W16AHZg&t=1s...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--QvzPshPAE

As Rishi Sunak gets ready to deliver his budget, there's pressure from some senior Tory figures to begin tax rises and from business leaders and other Tories not to start a tax hike yet. Labour has been accused of blowing hot and cold on corporation tax rises, but Angela Eagle Labour MP for Wallasey and member of the treasury select committee says the party has been misinterpreted - Labour does not support immediate tax increases. Plus Dave Innes, John Rowntree Foundation's head of economics, joins to discuss the ways in which the chancellor could act to stem the growth of poverty during the pandemic and lockdown.

A new exhibition 'Art Deco By The Sea' has opened at the Sainsbury Centre in Norwich, looking at the impact of the movement on the architecture as well as painting and fashion at British seaside towns. The Art Deco movement flourished on Britain’s coast through the boom and bust of the 20s and 30s, bringing a sense of glamour and opportunity to the masses, in a wave of proudly British manufacture and design that evoked far-off exotic places like New York and Paris. Britain rightly celebrates its part in the abolition of slavery but what many people in this country are unaware of is the compensation agreed by the British government in 1833 to pay slave-owners to release their slaves. The cost amounted to 40% of the nation’s budget and the British tax payer was still paying off this debt in the second decade of the 21st century. The wrangling inside and activism outside parliament that led to abolition is at the heart of a new play, The Whip, by Juliet Gilkes Romero which premieres this week at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford. Juliet joins Samira to discuss her play which questions the morality of that long-hidden debt. In a new BBC4 documentary Meet the Family, dierector Catherine Bray explores how families have been portrayed in cinema. Why have families in film often been overlooked in favour of romances, bromances, buddy movies etc. From Mommie Dearest to Back to the Future, she shows how filmmakers have approached the challenge of depicting the most universal relationship of all. And Catherine also discusses the biggest winners from last night’s Oscars. Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Oliver Jones Main image: New Brighton and Wallasey, Scott, 1923-47 © National Railway

There is a move afoot to cease sending people to prison for sentences less than 6 months.....naturally this has been received with mixed opinions......but unless you have been closely involved with the prison system....having either been inside or knowing someone who has it is impossible to know what it's like.....it's very easy to say "they deserve it" but everyone is different......whereas one criminal may be non-violent another may be the opposite....and you can't legislate for the latter as they are probably incurable. 2.I watched a programme on Les Dawson's life.....it simply showed what a comedy genius he was....and there was another programme on Bob Monkhouse....again a very clever man.....it's such a shame that stand up comedy has lost its way.....however it hasn't completely vanished as we still have the likes of "Would I Lie to you" and "Room 101" with the likes of Frank Skinner....Lee Mac and Rob Brydon who are very funny so there is still hope......and speaking of comedy someone put a picture of Prince Edward sitting with his wife in a horse drawn carriage with a long line of medals on his chest.....it was suggested he must have had an exciting time in very short time he was in the Marines.......surely this could be construed as impersonating a soldier?....still I suppose his mum loves him. 3.Forget the problems throughout the world.....the news headlines have been taken over by Andy Murray's sore hip.....he was interviewed and broke down in tears.....it could be the end of his career!!!!....what will he do??....apart from joining the overpaid TV pundit fraternity...and perhaps opening a tennis school...not to mention making TV adverts...and putting his name to tennis gear....what will he do?....oh I feel so sorry for the poor chap............................and on the subject of TV there is a new programme called "The Greatest Dancer" which is another past it's sell by date format.....the programme is bad enough with the talentless Cheryl Cole on the judging panel but on come these hopefuls who want to become dancing stars with the camera shot constantly flitting between them and the judges and the audience....so the viewer misses most of the moves.....the producer should go back to taking holiday snaps.....same old tripe. 4.As I said last week we are a nation of moaners and complainers yet most people don't know what REAL problems are.....I support an organisation called The Cheshire Cats which is based in Wallasey in Wirral and we raise money for sick and underprivileged kids through our weekly jam sessions.........a collection of vintage rockers from the 60s play rock and roll classics to an enthusiastic loyal crowd and all the money raised goes to various charities.....we have recently given £3000 to a children's hospice called Claire House on Wirral which will make a difference to youngsters lives.......it is one of many donations we have made to them over the years.....when you visit the likes of these places with the wonderful staff you realise the THESE are REAL problems......maybe the moaners should pop in some time....they might learn something. 5.The song this week is one which has been very kind to me.....it is called "Googi The Liverpool Duck" .... it was written for a friend of mine called Penny Page.....who had a ventriloquist act with a very colourful duck.....back in he day my band was sharing a gig with her...she was then known as "Peppy and The Popettes".....Googi being one of the Popettes....and I told her that the duck was the star of her show and I'll knock a song together for her and Googi.........I did this (in a very short time) and gave it to her... four years later she presented me with the record she had made of the song.....she performed it on The Palladium and it was featured in a film alled "Priest" sung by a church choir......all from a chance meeting at a gig.

On this week’s Murnaghan podcast – Boris Johnson was said to have been left “absolutely furious” after it was reported last week that he privately disclosed to a handful of EU Ambassadors that he supports freedom of movement, despite the Government’s ‘hard’ stance on Brexit. Dermot puts these claims to the Foreign Secretary, Mr Johnson. UKIP’s newly elected leader, Paul Nuttall, has said he intends to replace the Labour party and make UKIP the patriotic voice of working people. We hear from Angela Eagle, the Labour MP for Wallasey, who stood against Jeremy Corbyn in the party's leadership race. Could the Liberal Democrat success in Richmond be the first of many election upsets for the Conservative party? Dermot speaks to Mr. Clegg about what this by-election means for the party and for the Brexit process. And finally, as always, a team of top political pundits chew over this week’s news – Christian May, Editor at City AM; Sonia Sodha, Columnist at the Observer and comedian Mark Dolan.
Liverpool Live reporter Adam Phillips joined Mick Coyle live from Angela Eagle's Wallasey office where Merseyside Police are investigating criminal damage after a brick was reportedly thrown through a front window. The incident follows the formal announcement on Monday by Angela Eagle that she is challenging Jeremy Corbyn for the Labour leadership. She may face moves by local party members to de-select her after the Wallasey Constituency Labour Party (CLP) had urged her to support Mr Corbyn.

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is Paul Hollywood. One of the UK's leading artisan bakers, he's a judge, together with Mary Berry, on BBC One's the Great British Bake Off. The programme enjoyed viewing figures of 15.6m for the 2014 final and has won two BAFTAS. Born and brought up in Wallasey in the Wirral, Paul studied sculpture at art school before joining his father's bakery business. He went on to work at the Chester Grosvenor, Cliveden and was head baker at The Dorchester. Following his success at some of the UK's top hotels, he travelled extensively through Cyprus, Egypt and Jordan discovering ancient techniques for baking bread. It was in Cyprus that he first appeared on camera. On his return to the UK he began his TV career co-presenting two series with the chef James Martin. Paul has judged five series of The Great British Bake Off and celebrity versions for Sport Relief and Comic Relief - all alongside Mary Berry. He has published several best-selling books on baking and is a regular contributor to food magazines and writes a column for The Daily Telegraph. Producer: Cathy Drysdale.

Alan Dein visits an old mariners' home on the banks of the River Mersey. Mariners' Park in Wallasey is home to over 150 former Merchant Navy seamen and their wives or widows. Many of them set off on their maiden voyage as young sailors from Liverpool, passing the home on their port side as they embarked on a life of discovery, adventure and hard work at sea. Now, having "swallowed the anchor", they settled here in retirement and watch the occasional vessel pass up and down the river. But, as Alan discovers, life on dry land has given many of these sailors a new lease of life. They track ships on the internet, take the ferry across the Mersey and throw themselves into a sports day. But he also finds a reflective side to the Park and a very strong attachment to its own history. The Merchant Navy is often overlooked in Remembrance services, but not at Mariners' Park. Producer Neil McCarthy.
We have had some horrific storms … mostly down south…poor folk flooded out as the torrential rain burst river banks…I don’t know how these people can get insurance..let alone sell up. We haven’t had it too bad here…but I went on line to insure my house and one on the questions was “do you live within half a mile from a river…if so we wont insure you”…bad news. The damage at New Brighton after the recent high tides has been sorted…I went down there on my bike on Xmas morning (bit of pre dinner exercise) …there weren’t many takers…probably because it was very cold…but everything looks O.K…..until the next high tide and 60mph gale. What I will NEVER understand is the mass panic to the build up to ONE day….I went into TESCOS to buy a jack plug (£2.50)…I couldn’t get out…there were raving loonies at the checkout with trolleys piled to the ceiling….it’s like a disease…and as for the boxing day sales….unbelievable…we are a sad lot really. 4.I don’t gig a lot these days…so I can relax up to Xmas without worrying about getting a cold or damaging my fingers etc….so I watched a bit of tele…oh dear…the BBC put on a three hour drama about the Great Train Robbery….same old stuff…we KNOW the story !...we’ve seen it a hundred times before !!...so why waste our licence fee (£145) on old hat?...fortunately I spent Xmas day at my lad’s house so I was spared the television…and as for the variety shows words fail me….I’m thinking of going back on the road. I have just completed a DVD about the history of my birthplace..Wallasey…I did all the filming throughout our lovely summer and recently finished the music and narration (which takes a long time)…I enjoy making these local DVDs because you learn a lot of things you didn’t know….for example The Guide Dogs For The Blind was founded in Wallasey in 1930 and there is a statue of a dog outside The Floral Pavilion commemorating this (I must have walked past it a hundred times)…also the Stableford system of scoring in golf was invented in Wallasey Golf Club in 1930 by a doctor Frank Stableford….plus a long list of powerful men from the early 1900s who were involved in shipping and the slave trade……all good stuff…..I intend to distribute the DVD through my website to those who know the area…it has limited appeal but ex pats will definitely enjoy it.

The “Researchers” have been at it again…. (a)…a university study has revealed that if women don’t talk about their age…they are much happier and contented… (b)…if you hold a 5p or a 10p piece in your hand for too long you can be affected by the nickel in them…because there is more in these coins than in others…this could be a major problem in Yorkshire I’m thinking. (c)…If you take painkillers it could cause cancer…according to research of course…this was a big announcement on the news…then they said in a quieter voice that it is only certain painkillers…but let’s get everyone panicking first. (d) …talking of panic…headline news for two days “if you go in hospital for an operation on a Friday you are more likely to DIE than if you go in an a Monday”…I’m sure all those lined up for a Friday session will be delighted with this news…..I don’t know what goes on in the heads of these TV people….they must get a big kick out of scaring everyone. . .On the subject of TV it’s getting harder to find ANYTHING worth watching….I would like to know if ANYBODY wants to watch garbage like “Embarrassing Bodies” or the selection of cheapo reality garbage…and as for the talent shows…well….what happened to quality entertainers and variety shows…even when someone wins you never see them again on TV…..there wa a young thing on tele recently who has made it big incorporating ballet with her skills on a violin…she is now world class…despite the highly talented Piers Morgan telling her she was going nowhere on America’s Got Talent. .....The Battle of The Atlantic celebrations have been in full flight in Liverpool….their surviving heroes make you proud to be British…and they also had on tele two surviving paras from the D Day Landings…saying how when the war was over they just had to get on with it…..WHAT !!!.. .On the local scene my good mate Harry Prytherch who was the drummer in The Remo Four…put on an auction of 60’s memorabilia at Fort Perch Rock which raised cash for various charities including Cancer Research…..I went along and it was a full house and hilarious..the banter from the crowd was great….there were quite a few old rockers there… ..and finally….our lovely barmaid at our Cheshire Cats jam nights at the Legion in Wallasey has donwe a parachute jump for charity….the Cheshire Cats sponsored her for £1000 which she duly earned…a very brave girl and we are all proud of her…..this and all the other money she raised goes to Alder Hey Children’s Hospi
