“The last spectacular ball in the history of the empire ... [but] a new and hostile Russia glared through the large windows of the palace ... while we danced, the workers were striking and the clouds in the Far East were hanging dangerously low." - Grand Duke Alexander MikhailovitchThe theme of the Met Gala this year was Black Dandyism. In case you don't know what that is, The Met explains:Black Dandyism is cool and all as its authentic self. I'm not sure it maintained that coolness last night with “radical chic” on full display as a symbol of virtue for the powerful watching in real time as their empire comes crumbling down. You no doubt noticed the vibe shift. Something seemed off about it. It was like the Blue Origin flight. It felt inauthentic, all for show, a ritual to genuflect to their chosen status symbols while disguising who they really are.Not that they will be criticized by the people who matter to them. Those outlets that aren't owned by Donald Newhouse, the billionaire who owns Vogue and the New Yorker, worth around $18 billion, wouldn't dare say a word. Everyone is to applaud and praise them for their goodness and moral virtue. But as I watched the parade of famous Black artists walk the red carpet, alongside ashamed, self-hating white celebrities who looked like they'd been kidnapped and who couldn't wash away the fear in their eyes, I could see the man behind the curtain, or in this case, the woman.Who are they kidding? This was not power or progress, not for any of them. The Met Gala served the same purpose it always has: to make rich white people look good. How they measure what defines good is all that has changed. The white guilt among the wealthy in our modern Gilded Age is thick. They know something is ending. They can feel the ground shifting beneath their feet. Just as the very wealthy in the late 1800s did. They have no choice but to try to buy absolution by bribing the virtuous to be their facade. They have no choice. They know the mob would eat them alive if they didn't defer, de-center, elevate, platform, and do something to make their insular world seem like the good place, not the bad place. They have to be on the right side to survive a little bit longer, to hold their place in society, even as, especially as everything falls apart. They didn't call it “virtue signaling” during the Gilded Age. They called it Civic Virtue, which has a long history in America, going all the way back to the Revolution. It is one of the reasons we see so many of the big names from that era splashed across major institutions, like the Andrew Carnegie institution, etc.The billionaires alive today are all expected to give back to society in a way that justifies or absolves them of their sins. But something else entirely is going on with what we saw at the Met Gala and with Blue Origin. It wasn't Civic Virtue so much as virtue signaling. But it does seem strange in a year when Donald Trump and his MAGA Deplorables won the popular vote, where he is attempting major change to elevate the silent majority, to attend this spectacular ball and to send yet another message to America that you are not invited to this party because we think you are bad people, racists. So we'll celebrate in front of you. We'll rub it in as though we never lost the election at all.The wealthy aristocracy in our country has figured out that they need shields. They must hide behind people whom no one would dare attack or criticize. It is the reversal of the fanaticism that afflicted and ignited the mob when the streets were filled with protesters in the Summer of 2020.What we see now is their way of healing from the trauma of the agreed-upon reality that emerged that Summer. Most people don't remember how unprecedented this uprising really was. Remember chanting through the neighborhoods in Seattle? If you were cowering in your home as a Good White Liberal, what did you make of that? How much guilt did you feel? Their escape hatch for all of this madness we've been living through, a fake-pretend fix to oppression because Lulu Lemon and the Lifetime Network now center Black characters and de-center “whiteness.”I'll never forget my white friends in Santa Monica, of all places, hurling themselves in front of “Black bodies” because the cops were less likely to shoot them. They all believed this delusion, even in Santa Monica. But now, there is a reversal of that dynamic playing out. White people need Black people and other non-whites or LGTBQIA+ members to hide behind. This is a public episode. What do you want to be known for? And what actions do you take to be seen in that light? What lengths do you go to to avoid being misunderstood and viewed differently than what you want to be known for? What drives what you want to be known for, and what are your choices to uphold your desired image or reputation? Most of us have multiple internal agendas that shape our decisions and how we show up and are seen by others and ourselves. Our values, fears, and burdens, internally and externally, drive us. When we place our worth and safety solely in the hands of others, we go to great lengths to hold on to how we want to be perceived. Lengths that too often leave a wake of chaos, abuse of power, manipulation, and betrayal–all to maintain the illusion of control. We need more leaders who give us hope and reverence for humanity and others. These leaders do the work to build their capacity for discomfort so that they can lead with conviction, humility, and a deep sense of connectedness bigger than their personal ambitions or fears.Joining us today is a guest who embodies the principles we discuss on this podcast. Dee Kelley is a leader who leads with love and compassion, demonstrating the power of these qualities in leadership. Our conversation with Dee is a reminder that compassion and empathy are not signs of weakness, but rather, tools for personal growth and resilience.Selden “Dee” Kelley is a lifelong learner and a beacon of knowledge. With five degrees, his academic prowess is unmatched. He served 18 years as the Pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene in San Diego, demonstrating his deep understanding of faith and its intersection with personal development. A driving force in his life is to help others discover the rich guidance that dream work can provide for their journey toward health and wholeness. He now helps people connect with the power of their dreams as a pathway toward new insight, better decision-making and improved creative thinking.Listen to the full episode to hear:Why Dee wanted to open a conversation about the relationship between the LGTBQIA+ community and the church, and why he has no regrets despite the consequencesHow Dee came to realize that the things he feared in others were invitations for learning and growthWhy we need to commit to having hard conversations even when we don't know the outcomeHow a strong sense of values and identity apart from his position in the church softened the loss of his role and credentialsHow Dee's case sits in the larger context of faith communities grappling with and declaring how they will relate to LGBTQIA+ communitiesLearn more about Dee Kelley:WebsiteInstagram: @drdeedreamscoachLearn more about Rebecca:rebeccaching.comWork With RebeccaSign up for the weekly Unburdened Leader Email.Resources:The Daring Way™EP 02: How Self-Leadership Saves You From The Relentless Drive To Succeed with Dr. Richard SchwartzA Hope For ChangeWhy We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams, Matthew WalkerAstridWomen Talking
In our ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, access to quality, expert care remains a significant challenge, particularly for historically marginalized communities who have well-documented health disparities. As the conversation surrounding gender-affirming care grows, an unfortunate truth remains: LGBTQIA+ individuals face significant barriers when accessing care and navigating healthcare systems that are not designed or equipped – and sometimes outright refuse – to support them remains a significant challenge. In this episode, mission-driven nurses Teddy Tinnell MSN, RN (he/him) and Kate Steinle MSN, NP (she/hers) share how FOLX HEALTH, the largest LGBTQIA+-centric health and wellness platform, is leveraging technology to break down barriers that affect access to care. We discuss what it takes to continually redesign and rebuild a respectful, expert, scalable, transformed telehealth delivery platform and model centered on the needs, locations, and health disparities of the LGTBQIA+ community and how doing so improves and expands access and exceptional care for all. These barriers contributed poorly to their mental health. After years of starting a family and raising children with a bleeding disorder, she was determined to embark on a path of being part of the solution to the problem. In 2016, she combined her spiritual-care experience with my dementia-care experience and became a licensed chaplain for elders with dementia. She serves at a long-term memory care community near her home in Boulder, Colorado. She is now caring for a parent living with dementia. Allyship is defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as “the quality or practice of helping or supporting other people who are part of a group that is treated badly or unfairly, although you are not yourself a member of this group. One of the most important ways to practise allyship is just to listen. Allyship means using your power, position, or privilege to uplift others.” It is also an acronym for Action, Listening, Learning and Yielding (A.L.L.Y.).From #BlackLivesMatter, #StopAsianHate, #LGTBQIA+rights to the #warinGaza and the #warinUkraine, there have been numerous global incidents over the last few years that have garnered attention and highlighted the need for allies. In this episode, we discuss allyship, what it is, the challenges of it, why it is necessary, how to properly inform oneself and encourage participation in some causes. We also delve into allyship on the ground level as Zimbabweans, dissecting patriarchy and how men can be allies against it. This is truly a layered topic which evokes a myriad of emotions and questions. How can you be an ally? What should you read to be properly informed when seeking to be an ally? What is the best way to be an ally? Delve deeper with us into allyship and how complex yet necessary it is. When we're asked to do anti-bias talks at corporations, we're sometimes asked by the different ERGs if we're comfortable talking about LGTBQIA+ issues - and we answer with our truth, which is that we are both cisgender, heterosexual women who use she/her pronouns. Nobody in our families is LGBTQIA+. So while the skill sets to tackle bias are related, we prefer to give the floor to folks who can speak from firsthand experience and knowledge. Enter our incredible conversation partner today - Schuyler Bailar, who many of you may know as @pinkmantaray. We've been following him on Instagram, and his new book He/She/They is now on our short list of Best Books to Recommend Ever due to its practical structure and the fact that it's full of questions he's received about being transgender. Just like the videos and workshops and all the work that he does, it's accessible, not shaming; it's factual, personal and so very meaningful. And bonus - he fits right into our multiracial Asian arc, as a mixed-race Korean and white American! Remember, your LGBTQIA+ friends are not here to educate you; this isn't their job. Schuyler has chosen to take on this role, so listen to this episode, read the book, watch his informative factual social media videos and make sure you're doing the work yourself to be a better, more understanding human being! What to listen for: Intersectionality, and Schuyler's own experience growing up biracial The importance of exploring why you are who you are, for ALL of us, when it comes to gender The quick take-down of the arguments from people working to push trans women out of women's sports A bullet-pointed list of what NOT to say to transgender folks (timestamp 24.07 - 28.30) How to remind yourself of joy and a sense of thriving in the world, when it gets rough What Schuyler wants cisgender, heterosexual women to do differently, once you listen to the episode Make sure you sign up for our email list and follow us on Instagram @dearwhitewomenpodcast so you get the two bonus questions we asked Schuyler! About Schuyler: Schuyler Bailar (he/him) is the first transgender athlete to compete in any sport on an NCAA Division 1 men's team. By 15, he was one of the nation's top - 20 15-year-old breast-strokers. By 17, he set a national age-group record. In college, he swam for Harvard University, on Harvard's winningest team in 50 years. Schuyler's difficult choice – to transition while potentially giving up the prospect of being an NCAA Champion – was historic. His story has appeared everywhere from 60 Minutes to The Washington Post. Schuyler's tireless advocacy has earned him numerous honors including LGBTQ Nation's Instagram Advocate for 2020. In 2021, Schuyler also released his first middle-grade novel, Obie Is Man Enough. And in 2022, Schuyler created LaneChanger.com making gender literacy education accessible to every team, school, and company. Follow Schuyler on Instagram @pinkmantaray

Soraya struggled to feel accepted and authentic her entire life. Early on she realized just how judgmental the world could be and how difficult it was to fit the mold created by others. And there were so many things that made her stand out - her mixed race, her artistry, and her sexual orientation. When her parents moved across the country leaving her feeling alone and left behind in New York City, she found solace and escape in alcohol and drugs. Rehab and AA brought her peace and comfort for a time but she eventually found herself outgrowing AA and the beliefs around it. She joins Annie Grace to discuss her journey including the struggle to feel authentic, heard, and valued as a member of the LGTBQIA++ community, what it was like getting sober in AA and why she doesn't have negative feelings around it, what happens when you outgrow AA, and how learning to trust has been the greatest gift. Bospar's Curtis Sparrer and Cannes' most famous drag queen Michael Sanchez AKA Holly White are both joining us on today's episode of Politely Pushy. When Curtis attended Cannes Lions last year, he noticed there wasn't any LGBTQIA+ nightclubs for attendees. This year, he took a page from Bospar's tech clients (who are always looking to meet a need) and launched a pop-up LGTBQIA+ bar for anyone interested in a safe space. This couldn't have come at a better time as US brands are facing pushback for their support of the LGBTQIA+ community. Curtis found the perfect partner in Michael, who is about to open a cabaret with his husband. Michael's alter ego Holly White is a master on stage, performing and DJ-ing all genres of music into the early hours of the morning. Interested in seeing Mika on stage? The inspiration to start this show was from the host Melissa Bradley who wanted to inform, instruct, and inspire fellow entrepreneurs, especially in people who identify as women, people of color, immigrants, veterans, people with disabilities, and folks in the LGBTQIA+ community (which drew me in initially). So if you are thinking about starting a business or just love hearing stories about how businesses grow, Porch Talks is for you. (Sponsored)
WOKE is the current worldview , and its working miracles in changing the history, values and morals of the world. It is noted for its anger, its radical approaches to past interpretations of history, its bitterness and its complete abandonment of rationale and plain facts. This series will examine the origins of WOKE, its areas of conflict, its battle tactics- especially the Cancel Culture, weaponizing and catastrophism. WOKE angrily champions the LGTBQIA causes ( and especially the Trans) Climate change radical action, first nation causes and racism. The attack on Western culture and Christianity is succeeding at an alarming rate, and while people could once have their differing views and be respected – WOKE takes no prisoners -Its conform or be cancelled. Reason , maths, science, biology and all established morals are all under attack. 1/ Our first session will define WOKE and trace its origins from Humanism and Post-Moderism. The feature will be the anger and the irrationality that the WOKE world generates – with its focus on racism, slavery and colonialism. This attack on Western history, culture and reason is alarming. 2/ The second session has a focus on the tactics of WOKE , especially the Cancel Culture that comes from the deconstruction and re-writing of history. This Cancel Culture invades all parts of society. We also examine the illogical rewriting of maths and literature .. We will also the alignment of radical approaches to many WOKE causes -including Climate change politics 3/ Our last session looks at the Trans phenomenon and also at the way that the Churches have completely forsaken their moral compass due to WOKE pressure . The lesson for all Christian religions , and especially for Christadelphians is obvious as these WOKE attitudes are coming at us from all quarters , especially in academia, child education and the workplace --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/christadelphians-talk/message
What would you do now to heal your inner child, that you weren't allowed to do in childhood? This is just one of the questions that old-roommates, host Beau Bradley (they/he) and guest Erik Shaw (he/him) discuss in today's brand new episode of the original Beau my God Podcast. This episode kicks off season 4 with a recap of season 3 (2022), a round of LGTBQIA+ trivia, and discussions galore. This pair has been friends for over a decade, and had lots to catch up on since they last connected in Los Angeles, where Erik lives, in March. Topics covered range from the importance of transgender and queer representation and the impact of the LGBTQIA+ trailblazers that came before us, what it was like to see each other for the first time in 10 years and since both starting testosterone, how impactful moving to the West Coast has been on both of our individual journeys, and somehow also Marjorie Taylor Greene?!Beau my God is a unique space for trans and gender nonconforming individuals and their allies to rumble about the things going on in our community, all things queer, what it's like to exist in a world that generally doesn't understand usYou can check us out at www.beaumygod.com, and follow us on social media @BeauMyGodPod, if you listen on Spotify or Apple podcasts, leave us a review!
Body of Mine VR won a special jury prize for the SXSW Immersive Competition for it's potent use of virtual embodiment to explore gender dysphoria and testimonies from a number of different transgender folks. Director Cameron Kostopoulos leaned upon his own queer-identify story of being exiled from his family due to his queerness, and wanted to create a safe refuge in a virtual space to explore stories from the LGTBQIA+ community, and particularly from trans-identified folks. The experience uses a seven-point tracking system to give the audience a full embodied experience, and you spend the majority of the experience in front of a mirror as you're able to track your embodied movements as they shuffle through nearly a dozen different trans-identified avatar representations. Kostopoulos leans heavily into the slight offsets in the trackers or the proprioceptive differences of the different shapes and sizes in the avatars across a broad spectrum of avatars in order to evoke a certain amount of either gender dysphoria or body dysmorphia that is thematically mirroring the themes of the the trans-identified testimonies that Kostopoulos collected and that you hear in the experience that are by touching different parts of your body that these clips are related to. Overall this was a really powerful use of embodiment within VR, and was rightly honored by the jurors with a special jury mention. I had a chance to catch up with Kostopoulos at SXSW where we talked about his journey into VR, his design process, some of the technical difficulties of Bluetooth interference with the Vive trackers in the context of an exhibition space, and some of the underlying financial constraints and costs for exhibiting a piece like this.
Here there fellow nerds! We're at it again, this time looking at the golden age of nerdy television: the 1990's. Join us as we reminisce about days of old. We each bring three TV series to the cast to discuss. Did we miss one you loved? Was Stargate Atlantis an abomination or a missed opportunity for a Netflix reboot? Find us on the socials to join the conversation, we are @nerdsofoldrepublic everywhere. And not to be outdone, we're back with a nerdy read next: Cory Doctorow's Walkaway. I'd describe it in my own words, but really, I'll let the blurb on the back speak for itself (mainly because it's Neal Stephenson and I cannot imagine anything more absurd but accurate): " “The Bhagavad Gita of hacker/maker/burner/open source/git/gnu/wiki/99%/adjunctfaculty/Anonymous/shareware/thingiverse/cypherpunk/LGTBQIA*/squatter/upcycling culture...zipped it down into a pretty damned tight techno-thriller with a lot of sex in it.”―Neal Stephenson So there's that. Go pick yourself up a copy and get ready for all of the things! And if you don't quite have time for 430 pages of whatever Stephenson said, go check out the seminal film Akira. It's what were talking about after Walkaway.
Previously on this podcast we presented a four-part mini-podcasting series focusing on issues affecting Black and African American Communities, and ways we can advocate for Black survivors of Trauma and Sexual Violence. The mini-series covered topics like mental health within Black communities, anti-racism and therapy, racial trauma and black survivors, and implicit bias. On this week's podcast, we will be taking a step back and discussing Mental Healthcare and the BIPOC Community. Join VSC Community Engagement Coordinator, Libba Van Eepoel, as they chat with Therapist Natasha Ganesh-D'Arcangelo and VSC Therapy Intern, May Figueroa, to chat about client and counselor representation, how lack of access can impact BIPOC individuals seeking mental healthcare, how stigmas can play a role in that, and advice on how to find a therapist. In this episode Kim talks with Natasha, a licensed mental health counselor about how trauma can start in childhood and then play out patterns in our adult lives. Oftentimes our nervous system gets triggered from an event that brings about a response to something that happened in the past. We have a choice to decide whether we want to live our lives from a pattern or live a life. The inner work is not easy but so worth it because there is so much freedom when we heal our traumas. "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom"-Victor Frankl About Natasha: Natasha is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the states of Florida, Oregon and Washington, a Florida Qualified Supervisor, a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), a Certified Compassion Fatigue Professional (CCFP) and a Compassion Fatigue Educator. Content warning: Discussion and photos of sexual assault and domestic violenceBy Chrystal O'KeefeThis is not my first time writing about this topic. I've covered sexual assault and domestic violence within baseball ad nauseam. Being a woman and sports fan can be exhausting, because it's clear the players or organizations don't care about you.The industry is already oversaturated with stereotypical cis white men, who will shove their opinions down your throat while claiming to be the victim of the same. Women, people of color, the LGTBQIA+ community, and non-binary members don't often feel welcome within the confines of “America's favorite pastime.” It is harder for anyone that doesn't fit in the square box of what is ideal for the sport. We can't even bring an average-sized purse into most ballparks, let alone get meaningful roles in the industry. That's all pretty common knowledge to many. Yet the unwelcoming feeling is more complex than not feeling accepted. Let's go back in time a little, to a time when Trevor Bauer was making a big deal about his free agency as if he was LeBron James (see: actually good). Women everywhere were warning the masses about how this guy was trouble. No one wanted to heed that warning, and Bauer padded his pocket and moved to sunny California. After no time at all, claims were made of sexual assault and battery, that Bauer punched a woman in the head, knocking her into a state of unconsciousness before anally raping her. While the “rough sex” was initially consensual, being knocked out and raped was not, as an unconscious person is unable to say yes or no. Bauer was under investigation, and though he didn't face any charges, Major League Baseball deemed a suspension necessary based on their evidence. The suspension was shortened and the Dodgers made the decision to wash their hands of Bauer. While I don't see any team desperate enough to want that baggage, he is still up for grabs. Aroldis Chapman, also known for a then-record domestic violence suspension, was just signed by the Royals. Chapman is a player I had to do a lot of mental gymnastics for. I felt dirty watching him in the 2016 World Series. I donated to domestic violence organizations anytime he qualified for a save or had a particularly good game while on the Cubs. As a survivor of both sexual assault and domestic violence, and a proud bisexual woman, it takes a lot of strength to continue covering this sport. I try not to be hurt by players that refuse to wear a rainbow flag on their uniform for one game in June, but at the end of the day, they don't feel as though I should have rights based on my sexual preferences. League-wide, I cover teams that actively pay players that have been accused of horrific things. My main coverage, and the team I typically watch the most are the White Sox. They've been in hot water before with Omar Vizquel and firing a trainer after he was outed as gay. Lest we forget Daryl Boston, the White Sox first base coach. His time with the Mets was less than pleasant. Hiring their old alcoholic manager almost felt like a slow news day after the most recent story about Mike Clevinger broke. Like Bauer, women continued to warn the masses about Clevinger. The investigation stems from allegations made by a woman, Olivia Finestead, who accused Clevinger of physical and emotional abuse toward his three children and their two mothers, herself included. Finestead has been in touch with MLB investigators since last summer, when Clevinger was a member of the San Diego Padres, but mentioned her accusations in a series of stories on her Instagram account last month. Finestead has accused Clevinger of "several acts of domestic violence and child abuse," including throwing "chew spit on a screaming infant child" and strangling her. The latter accusation was posted with a series of photos that alleged to be the result of violent acts committed by Clevinger. The White Sox claim to have not known about the investigation upon signing him in November. They will also refrain from comment until MLB's investigative process has reached its conclusion. Fans have roasted the Sox on social media, from calls to remove Clevinger from the team, to firing the entire front office for their lack of due diligence.Women are tired of not being listened to. Marginalized members of society that just want to sit down and mindlessly enjoy a baseball game should be able to do so without feeling unsafe and not welcomed. Women and BIPOC should be able to cover the sport at any capacity without being undermined and having it be “revoluntiary” to finally have managers, umpires, or even broadcast crews with more than one person that fits in that category. It's time to normalize these groups and be more accepting. It's also time to start listening to women and survivors, and stop paying millions to pieces of shit that don't deserve the blessings bestowed upon them just because they have a sick slider. They can't all be winners, folks. Maybe we're getting jaded, but this much earnest goofy nonsense can only take a story so far. The biggest tragedy of these episodes is that a major character, CRUCIAL to the story, is killed and mourned in the span of about 2 minutes. But there's still fun to be had this week on Chatz8. I never thought I would be having this conversation in such a personal way. In this episode, I'm talking to my friend, and LGBTQIA+ educator and coach, Heather Hester, about what to do when your child comes out to you. For me, I'm sharing, for the first time, that one of my sons has come out as bisexual to me. My own reaction surprised me because I've always been open, accepting and affirming of everyone in the LGTBQIA+ community all my life. This led me to questions like: Are you sure? How do you know? Is this just a phase? I needed to take some time to digest my son's truth as I know every parent needs to do. Heather is such a kind and understanding person who has been through this with two of her four children. She knows it can be messy and beautiful all at the same time. The fact is, even if you don't have an LGBYQIA+ child, your kids know someone who is. This matters because the statistics show that when a person comes from a supportive community and family, it significantly lower rates of them attempting suicide than in those who do not. For helpful resources and more on what to say to your child when they come out, download Heather's handout from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com Heather's Podcast Just Breathe Parenting Your LGBYQ Teen: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/just-breathe-parenting-your-lgbtq-teen/id1486711596 Robbin's episode with Heather on Just Breathe: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-power-of-connection-an-interview-with-robbin-mcmanne/id1486711596?i=1000531758165 About Heather Hester Heather is a podcast host and an advocate and coach for parents and allies of LGBTQIA+ adolescents and young adults. She works with her clients to let go of fear and the feelings of isolation so that they can reconnect with themselves and their child in a meaningful, grounded way as well as move through the coming out process with understanding and love. Nate tackles the apparently controversial topic of the city of Boise throwing a LGTBQIA+ parade on 9/11 as part of a pride festival. How do you feel that the city of Boise is funding a parade that is not focused on remembering the events of September 11th? Gorbachev, the last president of the Soviet Union passed recently. Is Russia stronger now compared to the end of the Cold War? Nate is also joined by State Representative Chad Christensen about not showing up to a session of legislative. Christensen will be sending a substitute in his place.

20220621 - KMC's Final Thought - HRC Turns Her Back On The LGTBQIA by Kevin McCullough Radio
It's not exactly a secret that the Church of Latter-Day Saints and gay rights haven't gone hand-in-hand historically. In fact, for many decades now the Church has vocally campaigned against marriage equality, making it one of the leaderships pre-eminent political concerns and codifying heteronormativity in Church doctrine. While some discriminatory policies have changed over time (for example, the Church no longer teaches that same-sex attraction can be ‘cured' and no longer requires children of same-sex couples to denounce their parents, as it did until 2019) it would still be inaccurate to imagine that the Church is embracing the queer community to its fullest. In fact, if you go to the official website for the LDS Church right now you can read a statement where they claim that same-sex attraction itself is not wrong, but it is a ‘challenge' and that acting on those feelings is a sin. Gay members of the Church who choose to publicly kiss and embrace the person that they love may face punishments including probation, disfellowship, or (for those who refuse to repent) excommunication—a total severance from the bonds of their community and faith. Official Church statements refer to same-sex relationships as ‘transgressions' ‘temptations' ‘wickedness' and ‘sin'. The Church emphasizes the importance of marriage and family as absolutely essential for human happiness and salvation after this life, and yet it unequivocally prohibits marriage and family for gay people, condemning them to a life of celibacy and solitude. On today's episode we hear from two guests — Colette Dalton & Autumn McAlpin — who share their experiences with queer identity and the LDS Church. Friends, this might be our most vulnerable episode yet. We sit down with Dawna Noble, an LGTBQIA+ relationship expert and coach, to dive DEEP into dating. P talks about the patterns that keep coming up in her love life and asks Dawna how she can break them. S gets real about everything she has been learning and unlearning from past relationships. Dawna explains the differences between queer and straight relationships, and the challenges that can come up for queer couples (no matter their gender). Plus, how the trauma from her ex-wife's infidelity inspired her to build a career around helping other couples in crisis. This was such a lovely, emotional, and open conversation. We hope everyone can take something away from Dawna's expertise — whether you're queer, straight, or somewhere in between. Want to work with Dawna? Connect with her through Instagram DM @dawnanoble! Oh, and don't forget to congratulate her on her recent engagement to her partner!

You have no idea how excited we were for this episode! Morgan and Christina (Levi's sister & her fiance) joined us in the studio as our first ever guests!! To start off the episode we went straight Tiger Belly/Bobby Lee style and didn't allow them to speak until introduced. That went well. Jumping right into it we tackle the biggest issue in the LGBTQIA+ community → When the heck did they add two new letters!? Come to find out, the "I" stands for "intersex" and the "A" for "asexual" and/or "allied.". Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. The girls recently went camping! Come to find out, Morgan LEFT CHRISTINA ALONE to go BEAR HUNTING. After last week's breakdown of the show “Alone, The Best” on AMC - we knew we had to jump right into their experience in the woods. Lastly, we hit on Britney Spears and everything she's going through right now. In her first public statement since her courtroom testimony, the singer told her 30.6 million Instagram followers on Thursday that her social media persona had given the wrong impression and that she regretted "pretending like I've been OK the past two years." On Wednesday, Spears called on a judge to end the conservatorship that has given her father, Jamie Spears, control of her finances, medical care, and career for 13 years. Addressing the Los Angeles court by phone, she described the conservatorship as "abusive." Seemingly lending weight to the theories of the #FreeBritney movement in a 25-minute speech, she said she felt she had been forced to perform, was given no privacy, and was made to use birth control, take medication and attend therapy sessions against her will. -- Support the Pod: https://smoothmyballs.com/wawd --> 15% OFF YOUR ENTIRE ORDER https://whatarewedoingpod.com/links --> The ONLY link you need --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/what-are-we-doing-pod/message
https://www.rainbowrailroad.org/take-action#donate Hell-O all you Ed-Heads.... or should I say Fred-Heads! (And Timbos) Welcome to our first week of Pride month. A month celebrating LGBTQIA+ voices in the horror community, and representation for better or worse in horror. We are kicking things off with a literal BANG from a pop gun as we are joined by none other than long time friend of the show Bobby Trippett from the Grindbin podcast. And you know we are talking A Nightmare on Elm Street 2. The thirstiest of thirst in the series. The dancing, the bar, the weird ass dogs with human faces for no reason. we have it all. The only link I will be posting this month is to The Rainbow Railroad. Rainbow Railroad is global not-for-profit organization that helps LGTBQIA+ people facing persecution based on their sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics. They have helped over 1,600 LGBTQIA+ individuals find safety through emergency relocation and other forms of assistance. 100% of our patreon funds this month will be donated to them, and if you want to contribute, please do at https://www.rainbowrailroad.org/take-action#donate
