What exactly is science fiction, and how can it help us make sense of global problems we face in day-to-day life? Can a genre traditionally viewed as an ‘Anglo-American' genre, portraying roaring machines and advanced technology, be relevant to a minority language culture? In this episode, Dr Miriam Elin Jones discusses with host Elin Rhys, her interest in science fiction, and how what could potentially be seen as an antithesis to Welsh-language culture, explores many relevant and pressing concerns, such as language death and a minority language's uneasy relationship with technology.   Dr Miriam Elin Jones is a Lecturer in Welsh at Swansea University and an expert on Welsh-language science fiction. Her research stems from a keen interest in how Welsh-language science-fiction explores the relationship between minority languages and technology and the idea of language decline, and how that might effect a society and its culture. Dr Jones is currently part of the Narrating Rural Change Network, combining her upbringing with her research to explore portrayals of farming and rural life in Welsh-language science fiction. As a published author, she also has an interest in creative criticism, which offers the opportunity to combine literary criticism with creative writing.

Berry growers are warning that what they say is a lack of support from retailers will mean fewer British strawberries, raspberries and blueberries next year. Growers say that while prices for consumers have risen they're being paid the same, despite increases in the cost of production. They warn some will chose not to grow in the future. In many agricultural communities in Wales the first language is Welsh, in fact more than double the number of people in farming speak Welsh compared to the population as a whole. We visit Carmarthen livestock market to hear about the importance of the Welsh language for rural communities. The UK's last ammonia plant is to close permanently; CF Industries says it 'will not be cost competitive for the long term'. The company plans to continue to import ammonia to make fertiliser at Billingham but 38 jobs are at risk. Ammonia is a key ingredient in nitrate fertilisers; in 2021 the National Farmers Union says British farmers used just over 3.5 million tonnes of fertiliser. It's described the closure as 'concerning' and called on the Government to look at how relying on imported ammonia could impact food security. In recent years Whitby has become a major fishing port for lobster, putting pressure on numbers. Now the Whitby Lobster Hatchery aims to release hundreds of thousands of juvenile lobsters back into the seas, to restore the ecological balance. Gwenno, Lleuwen, Adwaith's Hollie Singer and Lloyd Steele discuss how they've been welcomed by the Welsh language community in the UK, why Welsh music needs an image change, and how they use language to express themselves through music. Gwenno is a Welsh singer, songwriter and electronic musician who started her career in the retro indie-pop group the Pipettes. She has three albums to date, and sings in both the Welsh and Cornish languages. Hollie Singer is the vocalist from Welsh indie lo-fi group Adwaith, whose debut album Melyn won the Welsh Music Prize in 2019. Guitarist Lloyd Steele, formerly of noisy five-piece Y Reu, is gaining a reputation as one of the most exciting Welsh musicians as he embarks on a solo career. Lleuwen is a jazz-folk singer and classically trained vocalist who takes inspiration from Welsh hymns and Celtic musical traditions, writing and performing in the Celtic languages of Welsh and Breton.

In July 1967 there was a breakthrough for the Welsh language. The Welsh Language Act allowed people in Wales to use Welsh in a court of law - and it was also the first significant victory for a campaign to preserve the ancient language. Lucy Burns speaks to Dafydd Iwan and Lord Elystan Morgan about the campaign.PICTURE: Rain clouds gather over the Welsh flag flying beside the beach on June 15, 2012 in Barry, Wales (Matt Cardy/Getty Images)
