The Lunar New Year travel period has begun! Chinese tourists are staggering their trips to South East Asia to avoid the Golden Week travel rush... So, following this trend, we've expedited our monthly round-up. This week, Gary and Hannah assess the Top 8 talking points from a very hectic January 2025 – perhaps even more frenetic than usual given the fairly early occurrence of the LNY. This month's top takeaways take us to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Laos, Myanmar… and more. Along the way, we discuss the Thai Prime Minister's AI video to assure Chinese tourists about safety, Bali buries its hotel development moratorium, the Visit 2026 campaign experiences hiccups in Malaysia, and there's an unexpected move in Laos as it revokes visa waivers. Plus, we touch on an intriguing budget win by the Secretary of Tourism  in the Philippines, and we celebrate the first same-sex marriage ceremonies in Thailand.

Hello everyone! Happy Lunar New Year! In today's podcast I talk about Lunar New Year celebratory activities at school. We went on a field trip on Tuesday, including a hotpot buffet meal and a visit to the Asian supermarket next door. We also did various other activities such as Chinese paper cutting and a "Cake Day" on Friday, where students brought cakes to celebrate. I also share my own Lunar New Year traditions, including wearing red, especially because it's my zodiac year. If you celebrate, I wish you a prosperous Year of the Dragon! Script and useful expressions below. I noticed that on some podcast platforms, this is not fully displayed. Please feel free to email me for script or questions! 大年初一 (dà nián chū yī) - Chinese New Year's Day吉祥如意 (jí xiáng rú yì) - Good luck and happiness经验教训 (jīng yàn jiào xùn) - Experience and lessons learned自助 (zì zhù) - Self-service二维码 (èr wéi mǎ) - QR code传统 (chuán tǒng) - Tradition; Traditional团圆饭 (tuán yuán fàn) - Reunion dinner欢笑 (huān xiào) - Laughter and joy春晚 (chūn wǎn) - Spring Festival Gala (a special TV program aired on Chinese New Year's Eve)祝你龙年行大运 (zhù nǐ lóng nián xíng dà yùn) - Wishing you great success in the Year of the DragonSupport the showThank you for listening. Not Your Token Minority

Recorded before the Lunar New Year, Sheila and I talk a bit about how our respective families celebrate Chinese New Year, the meaning behind the customs and our goals for the year of the ox. LNY is a significant celebration in many cultures that begins on the first new moon of the lunar calendar and ends 15 days later on the first full moon. As you will hear in this episode, there may be many different variations on the food eaten or customs that are practiced, but the true meaning of LNY remains the same.Note also that while we use Lunar New Year and Chinese New Year interchangeably in this episode, I believe Lunar New Year should be the correct term used since it is celebrated in other parts of the world, not just China. I love hearing about how other people celebrate LNY so head over to the NYTM Facebook page or Instagram and send me a message! I'd love to connect and chat.

Xin Nian Kuai Le, Happy New Year! I have been so blessed to have been spending the Lunar New Year in Taiwan for the last few years. In this episode I will share with you what I ate on New Year's Eve with my host family and some audio from one of the most famous temples of Taiwan, The Longshan Temple. Thousands visit this temple during the first few days of the Lunar New Year and it's always inspiring especially to see the seniors come out to pray. For some it's obviously alot of effort physically but most still manage to get out to their temple for the first prayers of the year. Many ask me when is a good time to visit Taiwan and although travel around the island will be a little more challenging you will see some of the most vibrant celebrations of the Lunar New Year in East Asia. Live Chinese New Years Eve Day In Taipei, Taiwan-What’s Happening?

During the Lunar New Year or Chinese New Year Taipei literally empties out as many people travel to their hometown to enjoy the holiday. Streets are quieter, many local style restaurants close and the MRT lacks the usual crowds that ride the trains everyday. But if you look closer, particularly at the city's significant and historic temples, there are lots of people out for the first prayers of the new year. It's a wonderful experience to see everyone out with their families, especially the seniors who dress up and even though it's a physical strain manage to take their sticks of incense around to the various deities of their temple. Truly inspirational!
