In recent headlines, alarming reports have surfaced regarding the presence of a cancer-causing chemical, benzene, in popular acne treatment products from well-known brands like Proactiv, Clearasil, Clinique, and others. But amidst the flurry of news, confusion reigns supreme. Should you rush to rid your bathroom shelves of these skincare essentials, or is there more to the story? Join Dr. Christian Gonzalez on the latest episode of Heal Thy Self as we dissect the truth behind benzene in acne products. As major publications such as CNN, TIME, and USA Today amplify the concerns, it's crucial to understand the scope of this issue. Benzene, a known carcinogen, has infiltrated various consumer products over the years, from sunscreens to hand sanitizers and now acne treatments. With its presence in plastics, solvents, and even vehicle exhaust, benzene poses significant health risks upon exposure. Delving deeper into the problem, Dr. Christian Gonzalez explore the reasons why benzene is a cause for concern. Acute exposure to this chemical can lead to a range of adverse effects, including drowsiness, headaches, and respiratory irritation. Furthermore, chronic exposure has been linked to severe health conditions such as leukemia and blood disorders, highlighting the urgent need for vigilance. Enter Valisure, an independent laboratory renowned for its meticulous scrutiny of healthcare products. Their recent investigation into acne products containing benzoyl peroxide—a topical antiseptic—revealed alarming findings. Under elevated temperatures, these products produced benzene at levels exceeding FDA concentrations by a staggering 800 times. Notably, a test conducted on Proactiv acne products stored in a hot environment yielded benzene levels surpassing EPA regulations by over 1200 times. So, where does this leave consumers? With a call to action. Advocate for steering clear of acne care products containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and adapalene. Instead, opt for gentler alternatives and prioritize EWG verified personal care products. Ultimately, acne treatment extends beyond skincare; it's about fostering internal well-being. Tune in to Heal Thy Self as Dr. Christian Gonzalez navigate the complexities of benzene in acne products, empowering you to make informed choices for your health and skincare regimen. Show Notes: Understanding the prevalence of benzene in consumer products and its health implications. Examining Valisure's investigation into benzene contamination in acne products. The detrimental effects of benzene exposure on human health, including acute and chronic risks. Practical tips for consumers, including ingredient avoidance and opting for safer alternatives. In this 2-part special edition of Derms and Conditions, host James Q Del Rosso, DO, sits down with David Light, cofounder and president of Valisure, and Christopher Bunick, associate professor of dermatology and translational medicine at Yale University and medical and dermatologic advisor for Valisure, to shed light on Valisure's recent Citizen Petition to the US Food and Drug Administration regarding findings of high levels of benzene in benzoyl peroxide-containing products. In Part 1, Dr Del Rosso interviews David Light, cofounder and president of Valisure, an independent quality assurance company that aims to address a critical gap in the health care supply chain. Dr Del Rosso and Mr Light delve into the details regarding how a product review gets initiated, the financial source of such reviews, and the important differences between Valisure's work and that of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) testing facilities. Finally, they address the impact that manufacturing issues have on the increasing incidences of drug shortages in the United States. In Part 2, Dr Del Rosso continues his conversation with David Light to discuss stability testing—what it is, why it's important, and how Valisure undertook stability testing on products containing benzoyl peroxide. Mr Light details the rationale for conducting accelerated stability testing at elevated temperatures to evaluate the safety of the products across their entire lifecycles. Dr Bunick also joins the conversation to comment on the misperceptions about FDA-allowable limits of benzene in consumer products and the urgent need for change in how products are evaluated and formulated to ensure patient safety first and foremost. Lastly, Dr Del Rosso and Dr Bunick discuss how dermatologists should counsel patients in the short term on minimizing the risk of benzene exposure while we await further testing, external validation, and regulatory guidance.

Legislation brought in last year will require the government to examine the links between racialization, socio-economic status and environmental risk. That link is very clear in communities like the Aamjiwnaang First Nation just outside of Sarnia, Ontario, in an area known as Chemical Valley. Last year, the Ontario government released the findings of the Sarnia Area Environmental Health Project. Elaine MacDonald joins me to talk about project and the experiences of the Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
Bertie speaks to Agathe Bounfour, Oil Investigations Lead at Transport and Environment, about her investigation into the fossil funded research group CONCAWE. The investigation revealed that CONCAWE undermined the European Union's attempt to regulate human exposure to benzene, a carcinogenic pollutant. After oil industry lobbying and research, the new regulated limit from 2024 will be ten times higher than the original suggestions from scientific agencies. Read the full investigation here. This episode is my response to Layne's video about seed oils. Due to the pervasive mainstream support for seed oils, I believe it's extremely important to shed some light on the hidden truth behind these oils. There is a lot of conflicting evidence on seed oils out there. Looking at the totality of the evidence can be very misleading, so we must look at the details. By thoroughly breaking down each trial from Layne's video, we can see massive flaws in the methods and designs of each study. Trans fat consumption by the control group and multifactorial interventions in the experimental group were the primary confounding variables. In this video, Paul references several studies suggesting different ways in which seed oils are harmful to humans. He always appreciate differing views and these discussions because it's how we all learn. He has hope that a respectful debate will happen in the future so that we can dive deeper into this important subject. He strongly believe that seed oils are evolutionarily inconsistent, these are not the fats that humans have evolved on. In fact, we have evolved by consuming ample amounts of animal fats, rich in saturated fats. Saturated fats have been shown to lower markers of heart disease and they are an amazing source of essential vitamins like A, D3, K2, E. It's always meat / organs / fruit / honey / raw dairy. This is an ANIMAL-BASED diet, and I believe this is the most optimal diet for humans on the planet. Welcome to the hottest part of Summer, when the heat and smoke season may have you looking at your yard and thinking that it's time to upgrade from gas lawn equipment to electric, or to go back to manual tools. Tobie Stanger, a senior editor at Consumer Reports, joins the conversation to talk about the independent, nonprofit product review site's decision to endorse electric lawn equipment, especially for smaller lawns. According to the National Resources Defense Council, gas mowers, edgers, trimmers, and blowers are noisy, and their two-stroke engines pollute 20 to 300 times more than a car per hour of operation. A 2011 Environmental Protection Agency report concluded that gas lawn equipment emits large amounts of three volatile organic compounds that are known carcinogens, Benzene, 1,3 butadiene, and formaldehyde. The environment and our neighborhoods would be better off without gas-powered lawn equipment.Tobie has covered appliances, generators, lawnmowers, and much more for more than 30 years and is one of the most tuned-in observers of the electrification of consumer products. We'll find out why Consumer Reports concludes that gas yard equipment still has the advantage in some cases and explore the key features and functionality to look for when choosing electric alternatives to polluting gas equipment. If you've read the news recently, you've probably heard of yet another study finding benzene in common skincare products! This news is alarming for a number of reasons: 1. Benzene is a known carcinogen and NOT a component of skincare or personal care products. 2. The production of skincare and personal care products is likely contaminated during the manufacturing process, but we don't know exactly where this is happening, how or why. Join me as I take a deeper dive into this complex issue with dermatologist, Dr. Christopher Bunick, who has insight into this issue as both a physician and scientist. Websites and articles discussed in the podcast: Benzene-FREE products based on Valisure study Unilever announcement of recall and benzene detection in dry shampoo Sunscreen use NOT associated with increased blood concentrations of benzene Sunscreen application on plasma concentration of sunscreen active ingredients

In this behind-the-scenes episode we caught up with Murphy Murri for an extended discussion about the current state of the Cannabis industry, extraction supply chain quality issues, medusa stones, mushroom extraction and more. Medusa stones are concentrated lumps of cannabinoids that, rather than having a clear "diamond" appearance, has a chalky appearance. And like you might expect, the "diamond" disintegrates after being handled, turning into a sticky, chalky mess. So what causes the medusa stone phenomenon in Cannabis extracts? During this conversation, Murphy breaks down the phenomenon and the controversy surrounding the hunt for the cause behind these disappointing creations. Due to some technical difficulties on the day of recording, this discussion was recorded on Zoom instead of our usual platform, resulting in some compromised audio quality.

In the minutes before 3 a.m. on June 30, 1992, as the Northland slept, a freight train carrying hazardous materials just south of Superior derailed, sending train cars carrying aromatic chemicals sailing 71 feet into the waters of the Nemadji River. The result was catastrophic — the chemical cocktail created an orange colored vapor cloud measuring 20 miles long and 5 miles wide — and it parked itself over the populated area of Superior and neighboring Duluth. As a result, more than 50,000 residents were evacuated. Reporter Trisha Taurinskas recalls the scary situation and speaks with then-Police Chief Scott Lyons about the events of that day.

Most widely known as the 'feel good chemical,' dopamine is a neurotransmitter in the pleasure area of the brain's reward system that plays a role in many important body functions, including movement, memory, and pleasurable reward and motivation. But do you really know what Dopamine really is, and what it actually does in your brain? Or how it works in other parts of your body, or even how other life forms use it?Dopamine is made up of a benzene ring, which is one of the most important chemical structures that carbon based life forms need to exist. Dopamine is one of the oldest neurotransmitters (around 500 million years). Dopamine is found in a wide variety of both plants and animals, and it has a profound effect on the behaviors of all. Having the right amount of dopamine is important both for your body and your brain. High or low dopamine levels are associated with diseases including Parkinson's disease, restless legs syndrome and ADHD. Treating dopamine-related diseases can also cause issues. For example, treatments for Parkinson's can cause schizophrenia-like symptoms, all because one tiny chemical in your brain is out of balance. The way your body makes and uses dopamine can actually be predicted based on your DNA, which makes some of us the losers when it comes to the dopamine gene lottery. However, more research is needed to determine how and why each individual use of dopamine is different.Listen now to learn everything you've ever wanted to know about dopamine, your motivation to do anything.
