Katie's talks about how being part of a faith community can provide strength and encouragement. She experienced first hand that in God you can find peace and strength through faith, even when faced with trauma and loss. Transformation Through Trials: The conversation highlights the transformative power of trials, as Katie learns to appreciate God for who He is, not just for the blessings He provides. This insight is a profound reminder of the deeper spiritual growth that can occur through adversity. Podcast Intro: My guest Katie Jones is quite inspiring and her story had me holding my breath and fighting back tears. Life is often a tapestry of unexpected events and trials that test our resilience and faith and Katie has that in common with many of us. Early in her marriage, she and her husband discovered they were not able to conceive and the doctors could not give them an answer as to why they could not. Katie struggled with God about wanting to be a mom. As she and her husband try to discern God's leading He opens their hearts to fostering children. Despite the challenges that come with fostering children they fall in love with the kids and the beauty in breakthroughs and progress in the children's healing journey. As they walk out their fostering journey with the Lord, they shifted their desires to align with what they believed were God's plans for them, no biological children but rather the blessing of foster children. Her story takes a dramatic turn when she unexpectedly becomes pregnant. This news was hard to wrap her mind around and is initially met with disbelief but that soon turned to joy, and Katie and her husband began to let themselves be excited about having a biological child. But their joy and happiness were severely tested at the birth of her sweet baby boy. Within hours both Katie and their newborn Malachi were being monitored for serious problems. Within a day or two they are both diagnosed with sepsis and things began to quickly and drastically change for them both. Katie had to make a life or death decision that would prevent her from having any future children and Malachi would endure a last ditch effort that involved cutting into both the carotid and the jugular arteries, a high-risk procedure that would prevent any further use of those two arteries in the future. One of the more profound moments, for me during our conversation was when she shares how she was praying with her husband, their family, church family and those who have supported them in the last couple of days. They're praying together as Malachi is preparing to go in for this procedure, what they call an ECHMO procedure and she verbally takes a stance by telling God out loud, God if you take his life, I still trust you. That was yet another place in our conversation where I had to fight back tears because she stands in faith knowing that her one and only son is at risk during a medical procedure and that she has no future opportunity to have biological children. Katie's story is an incredible testament to resilience, faith, and the power of community. She emphasizes the importance of the church's support and the way God is working through the church as a global community of believers. Her experience underscores the belief that while God does not promise an easy life, His gives us the beauty of HIs presence and His faithfulness and that offers us comfort, peace and hope in the darkest of times. Listen in to Katie's message of who the God of the Holy Bible is in the midst of loss and uncertainty and may your faith be encouraged for greater intimacy with Jesus. Finding God in Our Pain
Living in Uncertainty, with Angie Baughman

Finding God in Our Pain

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 28, 2024 56:51

This conversation is deeply layered and beautifully delivered by my guest Angie Baughman who intimately knows loss and what it means to live with complete uncertainty.  A simple car ride with her family turns their world upside down. She's in the car with her husband and 2 young sons, a vehicle crosses the line and hits them head on. The crash affects her entire family; immediate, extended, church as well as their friends. Everyone  who was courageous enough to step into roles and take on responsibilities of what it entails to support a family.  The tragic results of the accident put Angie and her oldest son who was 7 years old at the time, in the hospital. Between the two of them they had 8 surgeries. In the blink of an eye she began a journey of loss and total uncertainty at no fault of her own.  And then at a point where she's gaining some independence, she's working hard to hit the physical therapy goals with a strong desire to do away with the level of need and personal care she receives, including the desire to be the one making all of the decision for her and her family, but then she's blind signed by a brain bleed. It was a result of the car crash but yet it doesn't present itself until 18 months later.  She's in a great place of improvement, moving forward and now she's starting all over again.  Because of her extended recovery Angie's belief system, and not exclusive to her faith, is more than simply challenged or shaken, it's shattered. Since satan is famous for attaching himself to our traumas, in the midst of Angie questioning everything about her life, satan brings a past trauma to the forefront of her mind/heart.  Satan's intention, of course, is to destroy Angie with this compounding trauma but she decides to accept God's invitation and allow Him to heal her. In the intimacy of His invitation, He lets her know, He's not giving her back the life she had, He's taking her back to move her forward. Satan may have brought back past trauma but God was going to reveal His heart to healing. He was preparing a table for her in the presence of her enemy. At one point in our conversation I asked her how do we take negative/traumatic/lies/thoughts captive to Christ and she lays out several things we can do to interrupt satan's intentions and rewrite them with God's promises.  If you're living with uncertainty or it's one of your biggest fears, then you'll find quotable wisdom that you can hang on to, right down to her parting words as we closed our time together. Listen in to discover what those lifelines are that Angie has to share. Angie Baughman experienced God's faithfulness in the middle of her worst day. She and her family were in accident, and when she opened her eyes, God didn't promise that she or her kids would be OK. He promised He was with her. It was all she needed in that moment. Her ministry, Live Steady On, is an outgrowth of His faithfulness. His Heartbeat with Sue Corl

Today we have the honor of going deep into the life of a sister, Angie Baughman, as she vulnerably shares about her walk with the Lord. Angie has a shepherd's heart and has been called into ministry to be a Bible teacher, pastor, writer and podcaster. Angie carried a load of shame for many years after a history of abuse and trauma in high school. Convinced that she couldn't be right or pure before God or others, she placed her identity in her performance. But our gracious God had a better plan for her life. Tune in to discover more and relish in our God's goodness, by the blood of the Lamb and the word of her testimony! Hey Friends!! This week's guest conversation touched me deeply, and I pray it reaches into the hearts of those who are in need of healing.   My guest this week is Angie Baughman, a trauma and abuse survivor who speaks openly about her ongoing journey toward deeper healing. Angie is a licensed pastor, the author of two Bible studies, host of the weekly Steady On podcast, and creator of the Step By Step Bible study method.   We talk about dealing with the heavy weight of shame through perfectionism and trying to earn worth, and what happens when all those spinning plates come crashing down. We also talk about the head-on car crash that led her to a place of solitude where God could begin the deep healing work needed in her body, mind, and soul.   Be sure to check out the links below to connect with Angie on social media, grab the freebies she talks about, and check out her podcast, Steady On.     Bio Link: https://linktr.ee/livesteadyon Website: https://livesteadyon.com/ Podcast: Steady On Facebook: Steady On Instagram: @angiebaughman421 YouTube: Steady On   Thank you for listening! I'm not gonna lie - this was tough to listen to. I don't know about you, but I give 1000% to being a mom, and I STILL feel like a failure. Bad things still happen in my life to bring me down, to make me question my worth. It's been a rough year. There have been many ups and downs and many days that I cry out to God and tell Him, “I just can't DO this anymore!” When I asked Angie Baughman if I could use the audio from my interview on her podcast, she was so gracious and sent it right over. I started listening to it thinking, “this is going to be great!” And then I really started to listen and her words hit me like a ton of bricks. Listening to myself talk about one of the toughest times in my life immediately brought the feelings back. And then I thought of you. I pray that you are encouraged today. I pray that you know you are doing a great job. Even when others tell you how awful you are (even if that's your kids!) Even when bad things happen and you feel you can't take one more step. Even when you are feeling like the worst mom and woman ever - I pray you find peace, healing, and your worth in Christ. I pray this episode blesses your life as it has done mine, many times over.Angie's podcast:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/steady-on/id1530478791My episode with Angie here on The Relentless Boymom:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-relentless-boymom-podcast/id1531037112?i=1000551747922

As she recovered from a near-fatal car crash, God allowed her to start recovering from a different trauma. Years before, she had been groomed into an inappropriate relationship with a teacher. The aftermath was one that no sixteen-year-old could have imagined. Feeling alone and abandoned, questioning her worth, she delved into "Christian works" to show her worthiness to God, to show that she was worth loving and doing his works. However, during her recovery, God reminded her that she was always loved and He could always use her for His work. Listen to Angie's story.

Would you believe your child if they told you that their teacher was doing something inappropriate to them? What if it was a teacher you really liked and respected, and the accuser wasn't your child but one of their friends? Or, like in today's case, nearly two dozen of their friends? Our book this week is Secret Lessons: The Perfect Teacher and the Young Girls He Abused. Our guest is Angie Baughman, author, speaker, Bible study teacher, and a survivor of sexual abuse by a teacher. She's got a lot of important information for everyone sending their kiddos back to school. I chose the International Children's Bible translation to share Psalm 40 verse 2 with you - very appropriate for this case. “He lifted me out of the pit of destruction, out of the sticky mud. He stood me on a rock. He made my feet steady.” If you've had an authority figure take advantage of their position and the trust you gave them, I hope that the message of this scripture really encourages you that no matter what has happened, God's desire is to lift you up out of that situation, out of the fallout and - like the heart of Angie's ministry is founded on - He will help you be steady as you learn how to move on. Our practical action step for this week is to tell ourselves that we are not going to be afraid to be seen as the bad guy when it means standing up for what is right. I know I can't judge the community that chose not to believe these girls, or to believe Angie. But all of my experience as an investigator is screaming that someone knew the truth about what was going on. Probably a lot of someones. But because public opinion favored the perpetrators, very few people were willing to stand up with the victims. If you know someone who feels like they are standing alone - even if it means you will be criticized - let's have the courage to stand with them. Please visit my website to access more episodes, read my blog posts, or check out ways you can financially support the podcast so that together we can impact more people, more families, and more communities. WHEN THEY DON'T BELIEVE YOU AND YOU GET HIT BY A CAR. TODAY I have Angie Baughman who knows that standing up for yourself to speak the truth about an abuser is hard enough, without being called liar and made a public spectacle. At the tender age of 16 this happened to Angie. If this wasn't enough pain, after Angie married and had 2 sons, she endured a horrific accident that altered their life path. But in the midst of her pain she heard the call to freedom. Accepting that call involved many things and led her into helping other women as a pastor, author, teacher, and creator of "Talking to Your Triggers." Today we're talking about those events in life that elicit in us a disproportionately emotional and usually entirely irrational response: Triggers! (If you've ever exploded at your children for a minor offense, you've been triggered.)  Today I welcome to the show my friend Angie Baughman. She's a pastor, an author, and the host of The Steady On Podcast. And she's here to share with you her 5-step framework for talking to your triggers. She has an incredible story of healing and restoration and she's overflowing with wisdom and compassion. This is Part 1 of a 2-part conversation where Angie shares her story of surviving a horrific head-on collision and abuse at the hand of a "beloved" high school teacher. She then shares with us the first step of her 5-step process for Talking to Your Triggers. Todays conversation is a special one. Angie Baughman is a Mom, Wife, pastor, author, and host of The Steady On Podcast. The story of how God as brought her through abuse and trauma into a place where she can claim the title Survivor is inspiring. In the hour we spent together, Angie was so generous in how she shared about her past, her healing, and how she is still healing and learning to cope while also living out her role as a wife and Mom. She is going to encourage us with a deep but quick way to study scripture, how we can talk to our triggers so we don't take out our emotions on our children, and how we too can find healing in the aftermath of trauma.
