The ALL NEW Big Wakeup Call with Ryan Gatenby

From June 22, 2020:  Award-winning international film director Peter Medak called in for a chat about his latest movie, "The Ghost of Peter Sellers."In September 1973 Peter Sellers embarked on the production of a 17th Century pirate comedy in Cyprus for Columbia Pictures (Ghost in the Noonday Sun). Sellers lost confidence with the film as soon as it began and desperately tried to sabotage it, firing the producers in the first week and then setting his sights on his friend the director, Peter Medak. At its core lies the story of an unraveling production but also the tale of a young director firmly on a path to greatness. Medakhad made 3 back-to-back successes; most notably 'The Ruling Class' in 1972 with Peter O'Toole (nominated for the Palm D'Or). This film changed his career forever. After 43 years the wounds have barely healed for Medak and this is his opportunity to tell the story and finally release the weight associated with its failure. The Ghost of Peter Sellers is a comic-tragic feature doc about what it takes to be a film director and survive your biggest disaster.

"I want to kill people but... they're all dead!" Director Peter Medak had a less than shipshape experience making the 1973 'pirate romp' Ghost In The Noonday Sun, starring Peter Sellers & Spike Milligan. The film from day one was beset by difficulties, dramas and indignities and as an exercise in therapy in 2016 Medak made the feature-length documentary The Ghost Of Peter Sellers. It charts the many obstacles to making GITNS that Medak had to grapple with, and the largest obstacle was its star. Tyler and returning guest Chris Diamond watched the documentary and the 1973 film and had a lot to say so their conversation has been broken down into two halves - this week their focus is largely on The Ghost Of Peter Sellers and next week's episode covers the actual film Ghost In The Noonday Sun.

In August 1993, the 2nd Battalion PPCLI, (Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry) augmented with several reserve units engaged in the largest battle since the Korean War. The place, was a little town in Croatia known as the Medak Pocket. The Croatian Civil War is largely forgotten by the world, but not by those who were there. For some reason, precious little has been written or recorded about the Croatian Civil war, and very little of the history has been preserved. The United Nations invented a new term, "Ethnic Cleansing" to replace the word Genocide, so as to minimize the reality of the slaughter of civilians in that region. The French forced attempted to hold the ground, but failed in their mission. They were replaced with the Canadian troops, who held the ground despite incredible odds. For more than four days the battle raged on but the Canadians held firm, keeping the Croatians at bay. Out manned, and out gunned, the Canadians were successful in keeping most of the Serb civilians alive. The Canadian Government, and the United Nations buried the story. To this day most Canadians have no Idea about the courage and gallantry of their Soldiers at the battle of Medak Pocket. Find out more by reading "The Ghosts of Medak Pocket" the story of Canada's secret war. A HUGE, heartfelt hank you to Rudy Bajema for sharing his story with me, on his first ever podcast appearance.

Though it was an almost day-long battle against Croatian forces bent on ethnic cleansing it was covered up by the Canadian government and still remains one of the least known episodes in Canadian military history.
