Russ Ewell's first son was born while he and his wife Gail lived in the Washington, DC area. The doctor said to him “Congratulations! You have a son.” Next the doctor said, “He has down syndrome…”. In time, they moved to Silicon Valley. Russ and his wife, Gail's, journey as parents of two children with special needs led them to start: Spiritual Resource Ministry at Bay Area Christian Church, which offers individuals with special needs and their families the ability to thrive spiritually alongside their neurotypical peers in every area of the church, which they may not otherwise be able to do. E-Sports and E-Life are free, inclusive community programs across the Bay Area enabling kids with special needs to participate in sports and activities alongside their neurotypical peers. Hope Technology School is a private, non-profit, non-sectarian K-12 school, started by Russ and Gail. HTS serves neurotypical kids and kids with special needs from all backgrounds and operates independently of BACC. HTS is regularly recognized as one of the best private schools in the Bay Area. Digital Scribbler, a company Russ founded which develops assistive tech tools for individuals with disabilities. They also have developed a Special Needs Ministry Manual that you can download at the Bay Area Christian Church website for free. How do you respond when you see a child with special needs? Most of us fall into one of two camps: We either choose to engage or we look the other way. But choosing to engage is always the right answer. Russ and Gail Ewell will tell you the same thing. After dealing with judgment and unsolicited advice from others on how to raise their two special needs children, the couple decided the best way to inform others was to educate and integrate. In this episode of This Grit and Grace Life, Russ and Gail explain the importance of addressing misconceptions and cutting through the discomfort around special needs and building a community around those with special needs instead. The couple created a series of inclusive programs that unite special needs and typical kids to forge friendships, grace and understanding for a lifetime, and they discuss how, in addition to inclusive programming, we can all support those with special needs. Russ and Gail Ewell have been married for 35 years and are the proud parents of adult children with special needs. They have been leading ministry together at Bay Area Christian Church for three decades. Russ, a minister for more than 40 years, serves as the Executive Minister at BACC, where his teaching is rooted in providing hope for those turned off by tradition. Gail is the Lead Women's Minister at BACC and serves as the executive director of Hope Technology School, a nationally recognized full-inclusion school in Palo Alto, California, which she and Russ founded together. In this episode, we interview Erika Bell, PhD from the Bay Area Cancer Connections (BACC) patient advocacy community about ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Erika discusses the role of BACC in supporting cancer patients, the challenges of finding support during the pandemic, and the importance of patient advocacy organizations. She then dives into a detailed explanation of DCIS, its characteristics, and how it differs from invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). We also delve into the decision-making process for treating DCIS, discussing options such as lumpectomy and mastectomy, and examine the role of sentinel lymph node biopsy in DCIS. This includes a detailed discussion on the findings of a study regarding sentinel lymph node biopsy in DCIS patients and its implications for treatment decisions. Above all, this conversation underscores the complexity of decision-making in cancer treatment and the need for personalized support and information for patients. This episode was supported by the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and features this study by Dr. Shiyi Wang. Key Highlights: 1. DCIS is known as stage 0 breast cancer because it hasn't spread outside of the breast ducts. However, there is not enough research to determine the conditions that increase the chances of DCIS evolving into IDC. 2. Sentinel lymph node biopsy is not necessary for most DCIS patients as the risk of lymph node involvement is low. 3. Personalized support and information are crucial for patients to make informed decisions about their treatment. About our guest: Erika Bell is the Director of Cancer Information and Education at Bay Area Cancer Connections (BACC), a community-based non-profit that supports people with breast or ovarian cancer. In this role she provides health education, personalized research, and medical decision-making support to clients. She has been with the organization for 14 years and is passionate about her work and the positive impact that it has on empowering people during a difficult time in their lives. She also serves as the Vice Chairperson for the California Breast Cancer Research Program Council. Erika earned an undergraduate degree in Biology from Cornell University and a doctorate degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Biochemistry from the University of California, San Francisco. Key Moments: At 13:43 “There are a lot of people where maintaining as much breast tissue as possible is the most important thing to them in addition to still having feeling in their breast, so they opt for a lumpectomy. Other people really have a strong urge to just get everything out, “I don't ever want to have to deal with this again, please remove everything.” Those people also tend to be thinking about double mastectomies, which in the case of DCIS and no inherited genetic predisposition to breast cancer or no strong family history really is not medically indicated, but there are still women who make that choice, either driven by their anxiety or future screenings or symmetry that they want to achieve, etc.” Visit the Manta Cares website -- Disclaimer: This podcast is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing or other professional health care services, including the giving of medical advice, and no doctor/patient relationship is formed. Losing identity can be a long process over months or years but can also happen suddenly following a major life event or trauma. Last of identity may follow us so it's a change changes in the workplace lots of a job but profession lots of a road I once to find us as a child apparent or spouse that leaves us in the gap in the deep empty space. Set loss of identity can result in increased levels of generalized anxiety low self-esteem depression a loss of self-confidence social anxiety isolation chronic loneliness all of which threaten our ability to connect with other people. You can also lose your identity through the gradual merging of a relationship a healthy relationship should be reciprocal and encouraging and maintaining an individual self-esteem after all that surely should be with attracted partners to each other in the first place. We may lose some identity even in the most healthy relationships as we accommodate adjust our behaviors and support our partners and there may be some change in our level of independence as a small level of codependency may set in. However, in some relationships, particularly abusive ones, this Could be more marked, resulting in a virtual annihilation of independence and a total loss of who you are. When we lose our identity and sense of self we are likely to seek our sense of self-worth from others. It certainly becomes very important how others view us as our sense of value and self-worth, our feelings of confidence, are independent on external factors such as our physical appearance, success, status, money, and even fame. As a result we seek reassurance and praise from others to feel OK about ourselves, but in reality, our emotional well-being depends on how we feel about ourselves. Search dependency on external validation prevents the real you from being out there and impacts on personal growth as well as the opportunity for happiness low self-esteem can be linked to issues from the past from childhood and parents will neglect, from abuse and trauma, from childhood bullying, and this often shakes how if you ourselves and then how we interact with others and over the years this is what I have become subject to and now I just fit a perfect mode to where I was able to be manipulated and shaped into the perfect candidate to be taken advantage of. However over the past few months I have told everybody from my father to the people in my school my old classmates coworkers and everything girlfriends that was what was going on and it still continued because they succeeded in making it appear as if I was going crazy. Now I am on a quest to show everyone that I am not crazy I'm not suicidal and I need my identity back so I can just start all over and get my finances back. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/oggangstajames/support
