This one is near and dear to my heart. For years, I lived in fear of anyone finding out my husband had Bipolar Disorder. It was the loneliest time of my life. I never want anyone else to have to travel that road alone. This is why Sarah and I do what we do, we talk about the things no one talks about to try to remove the stigma. We bring Dr. Stewart back for our 2nd installment of "The Unqualified Meet the Qualified." Did you ever wonder what the difference is between Bipolar 1 and Bipolar 2? How can we help and support those living with Bipolar Disorder or Schizophrenia? How can we have more empathy toward family and friends dealing with these illnesses? Do you know what words are offensive to throw around when not used in the proper way (hint: manic, bipolar, psychotic)? Once again, Dr. Stewart busts out her copy of the DSM to share with us the facts. She clears up myths and explains each of these illnesses in depth. We hope you take away some new knowledge and understanding of these two complicated illnesses. Learn more about Dr. Stewart here. We've all heard the adage, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." When it comes to depression, however, this expression holds even more significance. For one thing, there is no "cure" for depression, so prevention is obviously deserving of our efforts. But how do you prevent something when you're already suffering from it? Moving forward with depression is the best most of us can hope for. Today's episode focuses on this journey -- and we fall down a few rabbit holes here and there. "Hauntingly beautiful," "ride the lightning," and even famous quotes like "we're all mad here" are often used to positively describe mental illness. An "every cloud has a silver lining" mentality. But is it true? Does mental illness have a positive side that is used to create things like incredible art and great literature? In this episode, our hosts push back against the idea that mental illness is anything other than a awful disease that doesn't contribute to a better life -- but keeps us from living our best ones. Recovery is hard to both achieve and maintain when it comes to mental illness. It's a long journey and in its wake are mistakes, missteps, and relapse. Michelle Hammer is an activist, who makes videos and other content about her experience living with schizophrenia. Because, turns out, most of us don't really know much about what schizophrenia actually is. She spends her time passionately fighting stigma, and even created a clothing brand to do just that - it's called Schizophrenic.NYC, and its designs are intended to start conversations about mental health. They feature slogans like, “It's not a delusion, you're incredible.” and “Define normal.”So I loved talking to Michelle about what schizophrenia actually looks and feels like, why getting her correct diagnosis was the best thing that ever happened to her, and how we can keep breaking down the stigma around mental illness. You can keep up with Mentally Together on Instagram @mentallytogetherpod.
