Danbury Mayor Dean Esposito joins the program to talk about the Danbury plane crash. A new kind of yoga is coming to Ridgefield and it's called booty! Affluent CT neighborhoods are being targeted by an international criminal organization (fear) and a California community is being terrorized by an 8 foot tall, super girthy penis made of granite.

Why won't those in “authority” believe us when we tell them something awful happened or is about to happen? Why don't they take action? Episode 115 discusses examples of not being believed or taken seriously in our own lives, current events in the news with teacher, Abby Zwerner, and a story from our very favorite reporter, Josh Mankiewicz from Dateline. It is a daily occurrence and we really need to find a way to make it stop. Intrusive thoughts, we all have them, they are weird and can be embarrassing, but guess what? It's okay to talk about them. Talking about them, getting them out of heads, and knowing we aren't the only ones having them helps. I (Amy) share a lot in this episode. I give you the VIP tour of my brain that no one knows about. After we finished recording and the days following, I kept telling Sarah how embarrassed I felt because this is vulnerable shit that I tell no one. I wanted to erase it all, take the words back and get a do over where I just share the facts. But I didn't, instead I share with all of you because I believe with all my heart that there is someone out there wondering if they are the only one who thinks these thoughts. You are NOT the only one. I promise. In the episode, I describe the inside of my head as, “Its like this f*ing party that you didn't invite anybody to but they all showed up. You invite one friend over when your parents are out of town and the whole school shows up and you're like Nope. You are just doing life and there is a rager in your head.” It was a silly sentence that slipped out, but truly, it can sum up what some of my days feel like. Thankfully, after our discussion of the various types of intrusive thoughts, Sarah shares with us a list of ways we can quiet and calm the thoughts in our brains. We don't have to be paralyzed by these intrusive thoughts. Anxiety doesn't need to stop us from living beautiful lives. We hope our stories, tips, and our encouragement to reach out for professional help when needed helps you on your journey to quiet your mind and live in peace, or as I put it, “turn that rager into a yoga class in your mind.” We love you Warriors! Are you lucky? Have you heard of the “latest” trend, “Lucky Girl Syndrome?” (And by latest, I mean the age-old idea of manifestation.) This idea has resurfaced on Tik Tok and started a very interesting conversation and life experiment for the two of us. We talk all about luck in this episode, discussing Ted Talks, TV shows, Neuroscience, and, of course, examples from our lives. There are public apologies to our respective partners for laughing at their “stupid” ideas and thinking they were ridiculous to believe they were lucky all the time. You live and learn, right? Don't worry, we break down the difference between “lucky girl syndrome” and toxic positivity too. It is a jam packed episode rooted in luck! We hope you will not only enjoy it, but also try it yourself! We missed you last week! Our mini retreat “Wine with Us” was a great success. We hope we can continue with our live events and come to a city near you very soon! This episode is full of unplanned banter and laughter. We have a lot to discuss with you! ***Beware**** we do visit the topic of Santa Claus and if you have believers nearby, you will want to put on the headphones. We claim no rights to crushing children's spirits worldwide lol! The holiday stress is no joke, but we are hoping that you all have some magic and joy (or at least some extra rest and relaxation) through the holidays. If you want to skip past our long winded, but funny, convo, fast forward to 26-ish min. It's winter and it can make you S.A.D. (Yikes, that is a terrible joke.) When you live in areas that have less sunshine during the winter months, Seasonal Affective Disorder can cause you to feel extra tired, irritable, sad, and hopeless. In this episode, we discuss the reasons we can feel this way as well as tips to combat these feelings. We sincerely wish you all a peaceful holiday. We hold on to shit and carry it with us even when it is no longer serving us. It can be anger, resentment, hurt, sadness, disappointment or any other emotion. We cling to it until it makes us sick. Sick in our body, sick in our mind and sick in our spirit. Letting go is hard work, it can be difficult to release a situation where we were wronged or where something awful happened. But there is power in the release. Eckhart Tolle said, “Sometimes letting things go is an act of far greater power than defending or hanging on.” Sarah and I talk about this on today's episode. We certainly don't have it all figured out, but we have some tips to share with you (and remind us) to us. As always Warriors, Stay Wild and Weird. 2 years. Wow. 2 years of holding space, tearing down walls, uncensored talk, shining light on the dark shit, and of course, adding the lighthearted fuckery we all need. In this episode, we celebrate our anniversary (late of course, in true Sarah and Amy fashion). We have several past guests give their quick and beautiful messages to us and you all which allows us all to reflect on the vast amount of solidarity that is out there in the mental health space...even when it doesn't feel like it. Listen in and let us know...which part do you find the scariest? Is it the horror movie? Or your interactions at the bar being told to "smile more?" Mental Health has been a mystery since the beginning of time. It is complex and difficult to understand and even more challenging to treat. There have been extreme and terrifying treatments over the years. We share our top 10 in no particular order. We couldn't bring ourselves to order them because each of them is as disturbing and upsetting as the next. Luckily we have come a long way in treatment for mental health, but there is always room to do better. The one thing we can do today to make things better for those struggling with mental illness is to understand that it is not scary. So while these treatments of the past are quite scary, the mental illness itself is not. Stopping the stigma around Mental Health is the most important thing we can do. Talking about it helps to normalize it. So join us in our fight to stop the stigma: share your story, listen to others, and educate yourself to understand the things you don't know about before making judgments. This might be our most controversial episode yet! Dr. Katie Stewart is back on the Pod talking with us about the elusive sleep. Sleep can fix a million issues, but it is so hard to come by. Some of us can't fall asleep, stay asleep, or even want to go to sleep, but we need to get our 8 hours! Dr. Katie shares with us some tips on how to do just that. They are great ones even though Sarah and I struggle to agree because there are some habits that are really hard to break. We hope you enjoy the episode and find one tip you can add to your tool box. It is a book for the collective and sure to bring healing to many. Listen in to Kate's conversation with us about how she got here, to a place where she now has a published book sharing her most damaging experiences. Also, she explains her very catchy title. You can read more about Kate and her books on her website. Revenge Porn, have you ever heard of it? It was something Sarah and I only heard about a year ago, but apparently Hunter Moore was capitalizing on this invasion of privacy since 2010 with this website, "Is Anyone Up?" On this episode we discuss the docuseries, as well as the topic in general as it goes way beyond Hunter Moore. It's upsetting, but an important topic to discuss so that we are all informed. Don't worry, we lighten things up at the end. It was time to bring back a favorite segment, "It's an Amy's First." I am chuckling just typing this because its a funny one. Long time listeners know how much I (Amy) despise the phrase, "Everything happens for a reason." I found it to be trite and a way to explain away bad things happening. But, I am willing to admit when I am wrong and I was wrong on this one. As life does, it has led me down the path to realize this phrase proves itself to be true. Everything really does happen for a reason and taking a step back, zooming out can be the perspective shift we need to realize it. In this episode, Sarah and I catch you up on our lives and share some real and gritty stuff we have been going through. In the end, the universe, God, source, however you say it, has our back. Sometimes we get blatant evidence of it and in those moments take note and appreciate the fact that if we hold on, if we let things flow, we get to see all the things we hope and dream of come to fruition. Hang on Warriors because WE are going to make it. “The entire universe is conspiring to give you everything that you want.” Abraham Hicks *Suicide is discussed in this episode, please take care when listening. In this episode, Sarah and I speak our truth on a topic we haven't mentioned before because it is hard to talk about. We both have residual guilt from our years in religious organizations that it still makes us feel bad about sharing our honest stories. Sarah finally reveals her story that led her to psilocybin or more commonly known as "Magic Mushrooms." In part 1 we discuss the myriad of research that Sarah did to decide if this was the right medicine for her. We aren't talking in this episode about the party drug "Johnny" (inside joke, listen to the episode to get in on it. LOL) sold you in college. We are talking about a radical tool to help heal and rewire our brains to live a life that isn't overtaken by mental illness. What the F*ck is Actually Happening? It has been a rough week, Warriors. Everyday we seem to wake up to another news story that seems like it belongs in a fictional movie or Margaret Atwood novel. We jumped back in the studio this week to talk about it. Sarah gives us a bit of background on the timeline surrounding women's rights surrounding contraception and abortion. How do we handle these news stories that are stranger than fiction? We discuss in this episode the place we want to live called the “Window of Tolerance.” Our bodies often go to hyperarousal or hypoarousal and that can be incredibly hard on our bodies and mental health. Teal Swan has come into the spotlight recently from a docuseries on Hulu called The Deep End; as well as from a detailed account from a reporter in his podcast series called The Gateway. Her fringe techniques for "healing" have caused an uproar in the spiritual community due to their (dare I say) dangerous nature. We did our own deep dive into this woman and her 'teachings' to get an idea of the message she is sending to those who are finding themselves in their own dark corners of despair. This is our final episode in "The Unqualified Meet the Qualified" with Dr. Katie Stewart where we try to unpack some of the most well known to the most confusing mental illnesses. We hope that this series helped educate you and give you the knowledge to help someone in your life struggling, help yourself heal, or to just talk more informed about the topic. Narcissism and gaslighting are words that get thrown around a lot these days, but do we really know what they mean? What is Narcissistic Personality Disorder? How do I spot gaslighting? Dr. Stewart digs in to her trusty DSM-5 to share the details on these and much more. If you have questions for us or Dr. Stewart, please reach out to us and ask them. PTSD and CPTSD...That is a lot of letters. It also takes up a lot of pages in the DSM. We unpack these two: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder on this episode with Dr. Katie Stewart. It is part 3 of our series: The Unqualified meet The Qualified. This one is near and dear to my heart. For years, I lived in fear of anyone finding out my husband had Bipolar Disorder. It was the loneliest time of my life. I never want anyone else to have to travel that road alone. This is why Sarah and I do what we do, we talk about the things no one talks about to try to remove the stigma. We bring Dr. Stewart back for our 2nd installment of "The Unqualified Meet the Qualified." Did you ever wonder what the difference is between Bipolar 1 and Bipolar 2? How can we help and support those living with Bipolar Disorder or Schizophrenia? How can we have more empathy toward family and friends dealing with these illnesses? Do you know what words are offensive to throw around when not used in the proper way (hint: manic, bipolar, psychotic)? Once again, Dr. Stewart busts out her copy of the DSM to share with us the facts. She clears up myths and explains each of these illnesses in depth. We hope you take away some new knowledge and understanding of these two complicated illnesses. Learn more about Dr. Stewart here. Every month, week, and day is focused on mental health awareness here at the UT, but for the rest of the world, May is the official Mental Health Awareness month. We are bringing you a series of episodes this month full of information, facts, and myth busting tidbits surrounding all things mental health. Dr. Katie Stewart is a Psychologist who is truly a qualified expert. Her belief is that, "Human beings need to be seen, to be heard, to have a sense of connection, and to have a sense of belonging." This week we are talking about Anxiety and Depression. These are two incredibly common illnesses that are still surrounded by stigma and myths. Katie helps us to differentiate between the two, explain why they so often go together, and what we can do to help treat them both. Learn more about Dr. Stewart here. *Trigger warning: This episode contains discussion surrounding suicide and suicidal ideation. This week's episode proved to be one of our most difficult for us. The complexities, layers, and perspectives surrounding a person's mental illness and suicide are endless. We struggled to tell this story of Michelle Carter and Conrad Roy. You may have heard about this case as the girlfriend who pushed her boyfriend to complete suicide. While that is a part of the story, it isn't the entire story. We tell you every week that we are Unqualified Therapists and for this episode we are just as unqualified with the law. That isn't what this episode is about. This is the story of a tragedy, as much of it as can be told from what we know. Even after pouring over thousands of text messages between the two of them, we will never know everything that was going on in the minds of these two teenagers. It is still important for pieces of the story to be told and to shed light on the gray world of mental illness.
Complex PTSD is something neither one of us had heard of until one of us got the diagnosis. That can often be how it goes, but instead of being scary, it put a name to all the symptoms and emotions. Sarah tells her story of how she got here, a place of loss and grief piled up so high that sifting through was nearly impossible. She shares how the famous line, "It could always be worse," caused emotions to never be dealt with and therefore creating that massive pile of traumatic events untouched. She shares with us how she walks the line between these two worlds. One side full of peace and joy and one side with the drop into the abyss of depression and how the big loss of her mom five months ago shoved her right over that cliff. Sarah also give us her tips for making it through. Some ideas to add to our suitcase of healing. None of them are the magic fix, but each one does a small thing to help her move a little bit closer to the other side where calmness and peace are waiting.
