TRISTAN joins me to REVISIT and cover two of my favorite topics - John Carpenter and the end times.  Luckily, John Carpenter has given us an insight into the end times in his famous trilogy.  I covered the trilogy a few years back, but now that things are buckwyle crazy than they were, we can learn even more from Sutter Cain, the green goo and Kurt Russell.  We'll look at the Cold War and the thing and its GMO theme, the CERN-ish portal green demon gnostic base matter goo of Prince of Darkness and the Antichrist, and the hell mouth opened up in Mouth of Madness. Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It's November, so that means it's time for our “Xenovember” series, where we cover movies involving otherworldly creatures! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss John Carpenter's 1982 Lovecraftian nightmare on ice, The Thing! An iconic opening title sequence! Frozen bloodcicles! A cast of actors that seem like real people! Locations, sound, and lighting that actually make you feel colder while you watch! Norwegian characters giving away the plot! A surprising nose piercing! Very gross body horror mixed with suspense and mystery! A high watermark for practical creature FX thanks to the legendary Rob Bottin! The first movie in Carpenter's “Apocalypse Trilogy!” One of the great remakes of the 80s, alongside The Fly and The Blob! A frequently-debating ending that's fun to theorize about, or enjoy as it is! A claustrophobic sense of dread, paranoia, and fear, brought to horrible life by a classic score by Ennio Morricone and John Carpenter himself! You'll never look at blood tests and defibrillators the same way again! In addition, Tim shares his spoiler-free thoughts on another adaptation of the novella “Who Goes There?,” 1972's Horror Express! Carp-winter continues with the final chapter in John Carpenter's Apocalpyse Trilogy: IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS from 1994! We're sorry about the balls! Reality is on trial as we explore the obvious and not-so-obvious meta layers of Carpenter's Lovecraftian universe, aided and abetted by Sam Neill's villainous energy (complimentary) and Carpenter's propensity for Wet Evil. We're getting super deep into how the heavy lifting of the narrative's unreality is accomplished through Carpenter's critical reputation, the way Sutter Cane writes, the casting, music, location shooting, budget cuts, and of course, Reaganomics. We're also taking time to talk about our feelings on pre, current, and post-apocalyptic storytelling as we wrap up discussions on the Apocalypse Trilogy on the whole.

It's week 2 of Carp-winter, our series on John Carpenter and his Apocalpyse Trilogy! Today's mammoth episode likely means excommunication from one or several religious institutions for the podcast. because it's the trilogy's middle-child: 1987's PRINCE OF DARKNESS!Carpenter is one of our best filmmakers who will notice a thing and make a movie about it, and this one is tied to his discovery of Quantum Mechanics. How much do you need to know about quantum mechanics? According to JC: nothing, it's just a horror movie. We're discussing how Carpenter gets to PoD after THE THING upset the world, how his efficient visual style is at its peak, Victor Wong's fascinating life, the secrets of the dream and the incamera special effects, our favourite Satan taunts, and the secret to an excellent Donald Pleasence impression. What does Born Again Christian Alice Cooper think of the theology of this movie? And for that matter, what do we think of it and how it intersects with the unknowability of quantum physics? We answer all this and so much more in our own Debate segment.Next time, we wrap up the Apocalypse Trilogy with JC's IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS!

Time on Screen is back this week with a seasonally appropriate entry, an underrated mid-90s classic from the Master of Horror himself, John Carpenter. Zach Kazan is joined by Zach Weiss and Chris Antzoulis (all horror movie fans to their core) for this discussion of In the Mouth of Madness, the capstone to Carpenter's “Apocalypse Trilogy,” and a personal favorite of this crew. There are other Carpenter horror movies that are more famous, but none that take place largely in New Hampshire, and few that are quite this unhinged, following Sam Neill's insurance investigator as he tries to track down a missing horror writer whose latest novel has the power to make its readers insane, forever altering their reality, and bringing about the end of the world as we know it. In other words, perfect spooky season fare. There are watches in the movie as well, but In the Mouth of Madness really fits into this series for the way the narrative plays with time, using elliptical storytelling techniques to underscore the idea that our characters are losing their grip on reality. To stay on top of all new episodes, you can subscribe to The Worn & Wound Podcast — now available on all major platforms including iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Spotify, and more. Welcome once again to Week 3 of our Halloween 25/8/366 Month! We're discussing Part 2 of John Carpenter's loosely-tied Apocalypse Trilogy. This 1987 flick is a religious themed, green-goo, anti-god, body-horror lover's delight: Yup - The Prince of Darkness! In Segment 1, Comfy Horror Movie Review we discuss this movie that has everything you could want from a John Carpenter movie: the usual suspects from his company of actors with some new faces for the time - including perhaps one of the most popular small-character roles played by Alice Cooper as highlighted in Jake the Midnight Traveler's segment - it has the signature slow-burn, plenty of creepy foreboding and a score not often discussed with fun kills that focus on said green-goo being spurt into peoples' mouths, turning them into blood-thirsty servants of the devil himself. We ask: why did it take so long to catch on? Why wasn't it more popular to begin with!? We all enjoy this but some slightly more than others :) In Segment 2, Horror, Etc Carrie and Case discuss some neat trivia both about the movie and the cast.

‘Tis the beginning of the Halloween season, beloved listeners, and what better way to open it with one of our favorite directors and three of his great films - John Carpenter and his Apocalypse Trilogy! For those who haven't heard of this yet, John Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy just happens to cover the three movies all three of the Sneople have seen: The Thing (1982), Prince of Darkness (1987), and In the Mouth of Madness (1994)! After a little time spent of Sam Niell's accent in In the Mouth of Madness, the Sneople hop right into what makes these movies work so well, both all together and as separate movies. They then delve into why they work as horror movies for people who aren't generally horror fans, like Ezra! Matty and Helena also maybe spend a decent amount of time referencing the commentary for The Thing, but in their defense both of them just watched it and it's very fun commentary, so what else are they supposed to do? Also John Carpenter, if you ever want to hang and play video games together, this is an open invite to do that whenever.

Whoa! Time jump! Spoilers for the end of the episode you were SUPPOSED to get before this one. We went ahead and selected John Carpenter's The Thing, thus rounding out his Apocalypse Trilogy. We loved the poetry of releasing Prince of Darkness on the actual 35th anniversary of the film (something we honestly didn't plan for before finding that out) so much that we decided to keep that release schedule and bump this one up a week in your month long October SHUDcast Shuntathon! Make sense? No? All good. 00:00 - 10:20ish Intros: Austin went to Alaska (aka the most Cody place ever), and it was very hot in September and we complain about it.   10:20ish - 1:05:35ish What we watched since the last time: Dark Skies, Barry, Bodies Bodies Bodies (Lucas x2), Sorry to Bother You, Looper, Haunt, Joker (the room splits right down the f*ckin middle), Orphan & Orphan: First Kill, Three Thousand Years of Longing, Jaws (Curtis went twice in the theater!), Tumbbad, Jungle, Brockmire, Cody watched 16 MCU flicks because he watched them in chronological (story) order, The Watcher, The Jordan Peele filmography, The Satanic Rites of Dracula, Men, The Invitation (2022), Beast, The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, and GoT: HoTD.   1:05:35ish - 2:07:20ish John Carpenter's THE THING - Shiny new SHUDdown and discussion (and also the 2001 prequel, inexplicably also called THE THING)   2:07:20ish - End Our next movie after our October onslaught!

Welcome to the spookiest of seasons, kind friends and patrons! We know you know that all year is spooky season but we're now in the thick of the time where hopefully we can wear sweaters and stuff while we do our spooky bidding. This intro to October brings you the first in a series of films that we'll be releasing EACH WEEK during the month! That's right, a SHUDcast a week keeps your ears super bleak (but like in a good way). We kick it off here with… some pretty typical oddball talk up front but bring everything home with John Carpenter's IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS — the final entry in the unofficial “Apocalypse Trilogy”. Season's Screamings to all!   00:00 - 22:40ish Intros: Cody learns of the existence of ‘Natural Harvest', Curtis brings Skyline Chili back from Ohio, and Austin plans surprise revenge against Cody.   22:40ish - 1:08:20ish What we watched these weeks! Jaws (Austin's wife, Kaylin, had never seen it), The Ruins, Mimic, Edward Scissorhands, Hatching, RRR (Austin finally did it), Bodies Bodies Bodies (Lucas was the first one to get to this but stay tuned because we all get to it), The Boys (Cody finished it, it's the best show maybe ever), Scary Movie, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Bullet Train, Here Comes Hell, The Predator, Predators (Cody clarifies that he did Curtis dirty), AvP and AvP: Requiem, Hellboy (2019 – Curtis did a rewatch), Predator, , Spider-Man (2002), Nope (Curtis took his parents!), Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, and….   1:08:20ish - 1:27:00ish PREY (we loved it so much we went a little deep)   1:27:00ish - 2:09:30ish IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS - SHUDdown and discussion   2:09:30ish - End - Our next movie!

Lived any good books lately? In the Mouth of Madness is a 1994 American supernatural horror film directed and scored by John Carpenter and written by Michael De Luca. It stars Sam Neill, Julie Carmen, Jürgen Prochnow, David Warner and Charlton Heston. Neill stars as John Trent, an insurance investigator who visits a small town while looking into the disappearance of a successful author of horror novels, and begins to question his sanity as the lines between reality and fiction seem to blur. Informally, the film is the third installment in what Carpenter refers to as his "Apocalypse Trilogy", preceded by The Thing (1982) and Prince of Darkness (1987).00:00 Intro05:40 Horror News19:06 What We've Been Watching34:17 Film Review1:52:22 Name Game1:56:33 Film Rating2:00:40 OutroPodcast - https://podlink.to/horrorhangoutPatreon - https://www.patreon.com/horrorhangoutFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/hawkandcleaverTwitter - https://twitter.com/horror_hangout_Website - http://www.hawkandcleaver.comBen - https://twitter.com/ben_erringtonAndy - https://twitter.com/AndyCTWritesAudio credit - Taj Eastonhttp://tajeaston.comSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/thehorrorhangout. The workman Master of Horror, John Carpenter's career has been checkered by commercial successes and, in the midst straight-forward meat/potatoes storytelling, some truly unnerving and unsettling filmmaking. None more than his self-named “Apocalypse Trilogy,” all three of which have been punished with box-office disappointment and eventual reassessment. On this episode, editor Keith Fraase joins me and Ted Haycraft to discuss:- Why Ted, a genre-lover who was buying tickets to these films as they were released in theaters, gave up on Carpenter just before Prince of Darkness;- how Carpenter's low-budget productions and his ability to “know where to put the money” led to his box-office successes while his studio, bigger-budget films led to financial disappointment;- the oddities of Carpenter's pacing, where dread usurps payoffs or anti-climatic action.And:- Whether a lighting effect strategy revealed by Thing DP Dean Cundey ruins or enlivens the film;- how Prince of Darkness's schlocky, heady ideas culminates in a series of haunting mirror sequences and shots;- if Mouth of Madness is the best H.P. Lovecraft adaptation because its meta-apocalypse media ends with its main character realizing he's a character in a fiction from a malevolent author;- what is the current state of John Carpenter's reassessment from film fans, and is it fast or wide enough?Keith Fraase has edited such narratives features as Knight of Cups, Song to Song, and Chappaquiddick, along with the documentaries Voyage of Time and Long Strange Trip. His most recent edited film is A Mouthful of Air, currently in theaters. The Thing (1982) is currently streaming on Starz and DirectTV, while a blu-ray is available from both Universal and a Shout! Factory Collector's Edition. Prince of Darkness is currently streaming on PeacockTV and is available on blu-ray and 4k UHD/BD from Shout! Factory. In the Mouth of Madness is currently available to rent VOD and on a blu-ray Collector's Edition from (you guessed it) Shout! Factory.

Lucio Fulci is resurrected from our Dungeon of Directors! Can you ever have too much Italian horror or gore? I have a feeling that Lucio would say no. Especially in regards to eyeball violence. Get ready for Lucio's Gates of Hell trilogy! Or is that his Apocalypse Trilogy? Whatever it is, we begin within the limits of the City of the Living Dead (1980). A wonderful place to visit, where people are subjected to storms of maggots, being buried alive, brain squishing, head drilling and bouts of nausea resulting in puking out their intestines and internal organs. That's already too much, you say? Well, what if you inherit a hotel in Louisiana and decide to make a go at a new life? That sounds nice, until you discover that the hotel is haunted by an ungodly warlock and is built on one of the seven gateways to Hell. Welcome to The Beyond (1981). And then from there, we have Bob. This mysterious girl in a photograph warns you to stay away from the Freudstein house. But you really don't try too hard to convince your parents not to take up residence in The House by the Cemetery (1981). Poor Bob. She warned you not to come.  Well listeners, even death cannot stop The Godfather of Gore. Fulci lives!

Welcome ghouls and goblins to this spooktacular episode of the ghoulishly good...alright, I can't do this anymore, but it's Halloween, so we wanted to do something appropriate and thus, we're reviewing the third and final installment in John Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy, In the Mouth of Madness! The film may be the least financially successful of Carpenter's career - and, perhaps, a harbinger of his career decline - but the cult classic is hands down the best film that we've ever covered when it comes to depicting fatalism and existential dread. After all, how terrifying is it to realize that the film we're watching is the film that John Trent was watching, which means that it's the direct adaptation of Sutter Cane's book, which means that Sutter Cane intended for us to watch it. Happy Halloween, all! Wear a mask and wear a mask over that mask!

Existential dread and terror, perceptions of reality and truth being irrevocably shattered, an imminent, looming threat of an otherworldy being...they're all elements for a perfect Lovecraftian adaptation, yet The Prince of Darkness has nothing to do with Lovecraft - not on paper, at least. The second installment in John Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy captures the Lovecraftian tone better than most of the films we've covered on this podcast, including those that brag about being direct adaptations. The terror of Dean Stockwell's mustache, however, remains unmatched (sorry, Jameson Parker). Speaking of adaptations, the work of Clive Barker is yet again coming to (after)life as HBO has recently announced plans for a new Hellraiser series. If a discussion on the potential pain and pleasure that both the Cenobites and David Gordon Green have in store isn't interesting to you, skip to about the 35-minute mark to hear the boys discuss Carpenter's oft-overlooked horror classic.
