Billy Gilman’s story is as American and as moving and inspiring as the lyrics of any country music song. Signed to a record deal at age 11, Billy’s smash hit One Voice captured hearts and fans but Billy’s awareness of his truth was moving faster than Nashville’s ability to accept it. Billy came out as gay in 2014 and moved into the power pop lane for his season on The Voice where he placed second. Only now is he turning back towards his country roots, collaborating with the acapella group Home Free for a reimagining of his first hit. Hi everyone! Just me today, as I continue taking a deep dive into documentaries, a semi-revival of our Documentary Thursdays segment from last year. This week, I’ll be tackling “Framing John DeLorean”, a film that promises a lot more than it delivers, much like the car of the same name. You’ll find out what I mean in a little bit, but for two other recommendations, definitely check out “Meeting Gorbachev” (Episode #641), last week’s documentary feature, and “Casting JonBenét”, a 2017 Netflix documentary that actually delivers what this film promises. Before the review, we’ll be showing more love for our friends at the Ocho Duro Parlay Hour. Every week, the whole crew sit down and go over a bunch of topics, from sports to comics to television and movies. Huge shoutout to the ODPH crew for all their support during Reign of Terror 2019. You can find them on Twitter and Instagram @ODParlayHour and on Facebook @ochoduroparlayhour. Lots of great content on a variety of topics! Subscribe to stay current with the latest releases. Contribute at Patreon for exclusive content. Connect with us over social media to continue the conversation. Here we go! ///// Today’s movie is “Framing John DeLorean”, the Sundance Selects documentary directed by Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce and written for the screen by Dan Greeney and Alexandra Orton. The documentary tracks the rise and fall of pathological businessman John DeLorean, with a combination of actual footage and contemporary interviews, along with a series of re-enactments by well-known celebrities who give their thoughts in-between filming scenes. No spoilers. I’m starting today’s interview with how a majority of people will learn about this documentary – the marketing campaign. The trailer bills “Framing John DeLorean” as a revolutionary new kind of documentary, one that will change the way we look at documentaries forever, some new blend of documentary, re-enactment, actual footage, and commentary. Of course, this kind of experience definitely intrigues me, a new take on a standard film process. A similar promise was made and delivered in the 2017 documentary film “Casting JonBenét”, which examined the case of JonBenét Ramsey through the eyes of families auditioning for parts in a dramatization of the infamous events. If you want to see a film that actually pushes the boundaries, then check out that film, because “Framing John DeLorean” definitely does not deliver on its promise. Of course, it’s only as I sat down to write this review that I began to appreciate the wry irony of such a marketing campaign for this particular story. When it comes to the career of John DeLorean, perception always outweighs reality, from his invention of the American muscle car in the Pontiac GTO at General Motors, through his failed attempt to sustain a fledgling car company through a series of mistakes. I went into this film much like the buyers of the DMC, sold a new kind of documentary that would stand out amongst the competition, and ending up with a mildly unique documentary about a slightly extraordinary figure. I’m not sure whether to be angry or disappointed or impressed, and maybe that is the best way to approach the documentary. “Framing John DeLorean” is structured pretty much like any other documentary that relies upon dramatizations to recreate pivotal moments. John DeLorean is played by Alec Baldwin, supermodel wife Cristina Ferrare by Morena Baccarin, former business partner Bill Collins by Josh Charles, and other roles by Dean Winters, Michael Rispoli, Jason Jones, and others. The only slightly revolutionary move here is some behind-the-scenes interviews with Baldwin and Baccarin, which would normally be played in the special features portion of a DVD, but instead are inserted throughout the film. Aside from one story about DeLorean calling Baldwin to have him consider playing DeLorean in a movie, there’s really not much insight brought into DeLorean’s story. I think it also lessened the impact of the dramatizations themselves, having to switch between actors as themselves and actors as their roles, perhaps another wry, unintentional similarity to DeLorean’s private and public personas. “Framing John DeLorean” might not be revolutionary, but the documentary itself is well-made. Dramatizations aside, the standard documentary portions have a great selection of media assets, including still frames, varying qualities of video from his decades-long career, and audio recordings, especially surrounding the famous attempt by the FBI to frame him for a cocaine deal. Well-chosen assets help tell the rise of John DeLorean, but the interviews with his kids, Zach DeLorean and Kathryn DeLorean, shows the real contempt for the effects of DeLorean’s actions, from the destruction of his family, to the massive disruptions to the economy of Northern Ireland after the closure of the DeLorean plant due to financial maleficence. In fact, by the end of the documentary, I had kind of wished Zach had narrated his father’s story the whole way. Two asides. First, the story of the DeLorean Motor Company is frighteningly similar to the troubles in the rise of Tesla, which also only survived after an injection of cash from the government to continue operations, and shows another executive learning the hard way that starting a company takes a lot more than money or investors. You can see some of those similarities in 2011’s “Revenge of the Electric Car” that tracked the recent rise of the modern electric car at Tesla, Nissan, Chevy, and independent converters. Second, they most definitely have a segment about featuring the DeLorean in the “Back to the Future” franchise and speculate about the potential for the DeLorean car itself if it had survived to see the film. I certainly wanted one as a kid, knowing nothing about the disappointment in the cars by actual owners. “Framing John DeLorean” is a documentary that promises a lot more than it delivers, quite similar to the DeLorean Motor Company. However, instead of a failed product, Argott and Joyce deliver a well-made, mostly standard documentary complete with re-enactments, and perhaps too-intrusive commentaries from the actors involved. Documentary fans, or folks interested in learning more about John DeLorean, should absolutely see this film. Just be ready to have a few reservations when you’re done. Rotten Tomatoes: 91% (CERTIFIED FRESH) Metacritic: 67 One Movie Punch: 7.8/10 “Framing John DeLorean” (2019) is not rated and is currently playing on Hulu.

Ambition and Greed The fascinating, and at times, poorly understood life of one of the most scandalous stories in automobile manufacturing history has John DeLorean sitting perched high atop the list of tragic outcomes. The story of the General Motors rising executive who would ultimately go on to pursue his dream of creating a cutting edge car company, DMC (DeLorean Motor Company), is riddled with accounts of both ambition and greed. Who was the man behind what generations of car enthusiasts have come to know as the mysterious "Back to the Future" car? DMC Factory Employee #16 Tells All Author Nick Sutton, The DeLorean Story - The Car, The People, The Scandal, https://amzn.to/2ML7nNv, worked for the Belfast plant of DeLorean from the start of the program in 1978 and finished two weeks before the DeLorean gates were locked for good in January 1983. His role was to coordinate design release and supplier selection from Lotus Cars who had agreed to develop the DeLorean under contract between John DeLorean and Colin Chapman, Chairman of Lotus Cars. Nick Sutton joins us from Chicago before he attends the Midwest Premiere of the documentary movie Framing John DeLorean. We chat about one of the most compelling accounts of automotive history.

When filmmakers Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce met, it was a match in doc filmmaking heaven. Their first documentary film, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Art_of_the_Steal_(2009_film) (The Art of the Steal), was a Netflix hit that would lead them to their next doc projects, and ultimately to their lives as full-time documentary filmmakers. It’s a three-fer: biopic drama, documentary and the-making-of all rolled into one. Three cars were most likely to adorn an adolescent boy’s room in the early 1980s. The first was the brutish Porsche Turbo Carrera with its outlandish fender flairs and whale tail. The second was the Lamborghini Countach which, in its original and purest form, was a single, hard-chined arc from nose to tail. The third was the DeLorean. It might have had a model name but nobody knew what it was. With its unique stainless steel body and gull-wing doors, the car was unmistakable. It was the Potemkin-esque ‘concept car’ you glimpsed at the auto show, but made real and available soon on a lot near you. For a time, the public couldn’t get enough of it... * * * Listen to the rest by clicking the play button, above. It was the 1980s, and John DeLorean was livin’ large: a supermodel wife, two children, and a swanky New York City apartment he’d bought from pal Johnny Carson. DeLorean’s lifelong dream was coming true, too, as his passion project, a gulf winged sports car, was about to be released. It was a car that would become one of the most famous autos in pop culture history. But by the time the DeLorean car co-starred alongside Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future, DeLorean’s dream had crashed. Underwhelming reviews of the car, mounting legal woes, and a drug bust that stressed his family to the breaking point ended DeLorean’s once bright future, and set him on a downward spiraling path. This week on Pop Literacy, we talk with DeLorean expert and film producer Tamir Ardon about the fantastic new documentary/movie hybrid Framing John DeLorean. Ardon, who not only knew John DeLorean, but owns one of the famous cars, tells us about the challenges of making a Delorean movie – this one starring Alec Baldwin in the titular role – a biopic subject that many in Hollywood have been trying to tackle for years.
The latest and possibly last "X-Men" movie is out and it's called "Dark Phoenix." It stars Sophie Turner of "Game of Thrones" fame as Jean Grey and it continues this year's trend of killing off super heroes whose contracts have expired. It's also got lots of effects. Lots. Will it continue the "X-Men" franchise or kill it off? Then there's the documentary "Framing John DeLorean" about the ill-fated automaker who created a car probably best known for it's appearance in the "Back to the Future" movies. But there's much more to this story than that. Bill McCuddy looks at the HBO mini-series "Chernobyl" which stars Jared Harris and is based on true and horrifying events. Bill Bregoli has the HBO documentary "The Cold Blue" which features footage originally shot for William Wyler's "Memphis Belle" and has interviews with real WWII vets. Neil talks about attending the press day for the third season of "The Handmaid's Tale" and apparently he let them know what he thinks about it. How did that go over? Listen in!
Money, power, politics, drugs, scandal, and fast cars. The incredible story of John DeLorean is the stuff of a Hollywood screenwriter’s dreams. But who was the real John DeLorean? To some, he was a renegade visionary who revolutionized the automobile industry. To others, he was the ultimate con man. For the first time, Framing John DeLorean recounts the extraordinary life and legend of the controversial automaker, tracing his meteoric rise through the ranks of General Motors, his obsessive quest to build a sports car that would conquer the world, and his shocking fall from grace on charges of cocaine trafficking. Interweaving a treasure trove of archival footage with dramatic vignettes starring Alec Baldwin, Framing John DeLorean is a gripping look at a man who gambled everything in his pursuit of the American Dream. Co-directors Don Argott (The Art of the Steal) and Sheena M. Joyce (The Atonic States of America) talk about the complex, brilliant and driven man behind the salacious headlines and explore with us just how far was he willing to go to realize his dreams. My Tribeca Film Festival Adventure Part One (probably 16th annual) started on Friday taking a two hour train from Port Jervis, New York to Hoboken. There, I was able to afford a place to stay hopping over to Manhattan via the PATH train. My goal, such as it is for any film festival outside of my daily driving ability, was to find the Registration room, pick up my badge and get the lay of the land, jumping right into the action as the first weekend is usually insanely fast paced. According to the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival (April 24th to May 5th), info on their Squarespace redesigned website (for the second year as a sponsor), the 18th annual festival planned a showcase of works from emerging and new works from returning filmmakers. It was programmed from more than 9,295 submissions. “Our goal each year is to strike a balance between discovering new talent and showcasing new projects by notable filmmakers and storytellers.” I really don’t know how that would be possible. During the months before the festival, I had been inundated with press releases, updates, invites to the “red carpet only” (which I always mark down as “not interested”) special events and, what I had hoped for, more networking with the film industry, hence my upgrade to an Industry pass, this year. The lineup included 81 World, three International, eight North American, one U.S., and ten New York premieres. Also 42 first-time filmmakers and 19 Tribeca alums returned to the Festival with their latest projects. Why does this matter? Most film festivals strive for being the first to show a film believing it draws people to purchase tickets, most likely online purchases. It becomes a game for their competition as other festivals plan and promote their line up and the timing of films finished and released is paramount for the next step. Timing is everything for when and where films screen often so they may be in a solid place for contention whether it is for an Oscar, a great international distribution deal, or streaming VOD deals. This year's features program included 103 films from 124 filmmakers. 50% of the films selected in the three competition sections were directed by women filmmakers. 40% of the feature films have one or more women directors, 29% of the feature films are directed by filmmakers of color, and 13% of the features are by individuals who identify as LGBTQIA. This too, matters, because the glass ceiling remains an elusive call for these filmmakers to come out and shatter it once and for all. While I was a bit surprised that there wasn’t a United Artists Centennial component to the schedule, it reminded me of the Universal debacle a couple years ago where the moderator of the Universal Centennial panel discussion was totally unprepared for any discussion of cinema history and Robert DeNiro looked so uncomfortable tolerating the awkward topics brought up by Judd Apetow. However, panels were extremely popular and quickly sold out. A bit pricey at $40 per ticket. Keeping an eye out for the women directors in features, I found that documentaries ruled in this weekend and evening schedule. They opened the festival and maintained its hold over the course of the first seven days with Opening Night film The Apollo; Friday night Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice; Saturday and Critics Week choice, American Factory; Sunday afternoon, Dog Doc; and in the evening, Halston; Monday, Inndda Back Yard+Performance and Tuesday, Say Anything, retrospective with Cameron Crowe, James L. Brooks, Ione Skye and John Cusack on a Skype screen. Wasn't sure if I would get to see the premiere of Framing John DeLorean taking it in during a morning Press & Industry screening. The formula works for getting people to come out and stand on line, despite the cold, raw rainy Friday night for the Ronstadt film. Many who tried to buy tickets online found it was Sold Out. As I note in many of my earlier blogs and podcasts, the Sold Out makes the screening more desirable.
