In this edition of the OctoPulse podcast, Ted Kulfan takes a look at the Red Wings at the 20-game mark, on pace for 74 points and out of the playoffs for the ninth straight year. He also talks about the unlikely possibility of Steve Yzerman making the third coaching change in the NHL (Bruins fired Jim Montgomery, who replaced Drew Bannister of the Blues on Sunday), the upside of defenseman Jeff Petry perhaps in his final year in Detroit and how first-round draft pick Marco Kasper is outplaying J.T. Compher as the second-line center. In addition, Mike Keenan is the interview guest. In Keenan's book, "Iron Mike: My Life Behind the Bench," he details for the first time two meetings he had with Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch about coaching and managing the team, which could've changed the course of Red Wings history for good, bad, or indifferent.

Damascus Road Productions, Uptone Pictures, and SaltShaker Media announce the upcoming theatrical release of "Paul's Promise". The inspiring biopic of hope, faith and racial reconciliation is slated to open in 200+ markets on Oct. 21 through Integrity Releasing with Home Entertainment release to launch on Dec. 6. The film stars Linda Purl, Nancy Stafford, Ryan O'Quinn, Shari Rigby, Josef Cannon and Dean Cain. "Paul's Promise" is the debut project to be released under the newly-announced Damascus Road multi-picture pact with film executive, producer and financier Mike Ilitch, Jr., who has committed to a slate of films, many already in the production and distribution process, with a broad forthcoming slate to also soon be announced. "Inspiring audiences through entertainment has always been a goal for our companies," said Ilitch. Nick Logan and Ty Nsekhe also serve as executive producers. "It is truly a highlight of my career to bring this story to the big screen," says O'Quinn. In this year end podcast we discuss the year and what's ahead, but we also dive into one of our most controversial topics that many men have fallen victim to. The best way to avoid this is to have a solid 5 and 5 list of qualities that you must have in a significant other and those that you won't tolerate. Anthony and Scott give a sample of their lists. You won't believe the joke Mike Ilitch played on Kal. As well as the crazy Stanley Cup party he held at his house.
Do you love a good slumber party, but hate it when they get massacred... again? Even worse, getting massacred with a giant guitar/drill combination by some leather-clad dork played by Mike Ilitch's son. Grab your corn dogs, Easy Cheese, champage, bra and panties, and as many feather pillows you can find and get ready for the silliness that is Slumber Party Massacre 2!
I'm asked nearly every day which U.S. real estate markets are my favorite, and my answer is usually, "The ones the cash flow the best and have the brightest future for growth." Detroit is certainly on that list. That city has certainly seen hard times, with job losses, foreclosures, and people moving away… but thanks to billionaire investors like Dan Gilbert and Mike Ilitch, the city is undergoing a major renaissance. Still, people don't believe me, which is why we're hosting our May event in Detroit - downtown, so that our listeners can see first hand Detroit’s comeback. If you don't know Dan Gilbert, he is the founder of Quicken Loans and Rock Ventures.[3] and apparently those companies did pretty well because he's also the owner of several sports franchises, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Monsters, and Gladiators, and he operates the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Gilbert is the chairman of JACK Entertainment (formerly Rock Gaming), which opened its first Horseshoe Casino (now JACK Cleveland Casino) in downtown Cleveland in May 2012. But his hometown is Detroit. And after seeing the city hit rock bottom, he was instrumental in bringing it back by moving quicken loans downtown. Since then, he's bought up over 100 buildings through Bedrock and Rock Ventures. On today's show, I have Whitney Eichinger who is the Vice President of Communications for Bedrock and Rock Ventures. She was previously a spokesperson for the Ford Motor Company. Podcast: Howes on Mike Ilitch, Detroiter by Daniel Howes / The Detroit News
Detroit News Columnist Daniel Howes and Michigan Radio are partnering in weekly essays examining what's hot in Michigan business and politics -- and what it all means. This week, Howes says pizza mogul Mike Ilitch, who died at 87, leaves a legacy that arguably changed the arc of Detroit in ways he probably never could have imagined. Not when he bought the Red Wings and, a decade later, the Tigers. Not when he restored the Fox Theatre and later laid plans for the District Detroit development rising at Woodward and I-75. He made a difference.

Mike Ilitch passed away, ending a proud era in Tigers history and opening up a new day filled with questions and possibly not as much spending.
Not two minutes into last week's episode of The Voice of the Turtle, Rob told our faithful listeners that the Detroit Tigers -- and other MLB teams, for that matter -- wouldn't be up to much over the Thanksgiving holiday. Like usual, both he and HookSlide were dead wrong. Sure, things calmed down a bit after now-former Tigers catcher Alex Avila signed with the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday, but the weekend came to a loud and abrupt close when the Tigers inked Jordan Zimmermann to a five-year, $110 million contract. Not to be outdone, the Boston Red Sox signed David Price (another former Tiger!) to a seven-year, $217 million contract just hours before we recorded. Oh, how good it is to be wrong. There was plenty to talk about on this week's podcast, from the new contracts to how the Tigers are going to fill out their roster to the interesting comments owner Mike Ilitch made during Zimmermann's introductory press conference. We also take another round of listener questions, and even ponder what Thanksgiving was like this year in the Avila household. Topics in this week's episode include: Nope, nothing happened last week. Bless You Boys Podcast 95 has a running time of 61 minutes and features Al Beaton, HookSlide, and of course, Kurt Mensching. The gang covers the past week of Detroit Tigers baseball, dominated by the controversial trade of Doug Fister and the signing of Joe Nathan. Fister was traded to the Washington Nationals for either spare parts and a prospect or spare parts and Robbie Ray. Taken in a vacuum, was the Fister deal a good trade or bad trade? But when looked at in a larger context, does the trade start to make more sense? Many are playing the "In Dave Dombrowski we trust" card, saying he must know something others don't. Is it possible owner Mike Ilitch has told Dombrowski the Tigers have reached the upper limits of a self-imposed team salary cap? Is asking Drew Smyly or Rick Porcello to replicate Fister's numbers too much to ask? Could Steve Lombardozzi be the next dividing line in the war between Detroit's traditional fans and those who believe in advanced metrics? The Tigers have their closer, inking 39-year-old Joe Nathan to a two-year, $19M contract, with a club option third year worth $10M with a $1M buyout. Are there concerns in giving an aging Nathan huge money? From all accounts, the Tigers' first choice as closer was Brian Wilson, but talks broke down. Wilson re-signed with the Dodgers for one-year at $10 million, with the second year a player option at $10M. Did the Tigers end up with the right closer? Are the Tigers are at or near a self-imposed payroll cap? Don't expect Shin-Shoo Choo to come to the rescue in left field. Robinson Cano and Jacoby Ellsbury have agreed to what are sure to end up as albatross long-term contracts. ARE MLB GMs NUTS? Speaking of possible albatross contracts, are the Tigers now set up to give long-term extensions to Miguel Cabrera and Max Scherzer? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
On this week's Talking Michigan Politics podcast, Press editors Jeff Cranson and Ed Golder are joined by Grand Valley State University Vice President Matthew McLogan to discuss: 1. How national political developments will affect Michigan and Grand Rapids-area races. Sen. Carl Levin said this week he thinks third-party candidates, like those in the Tea Party movement, could help the Democrats in general elections in some states. Would such a movement be akin to Ross Perot in 1992? Is Obama's jobs chart scoring any points? Is the moderate 3rd Congressional district ready to make a hard right with a candidate like Justin Amash? Former state Sen. Ken Sikkema, long interested in the seat, announced Wednesday that he would not seek it. How will that race affect down-ticket races in the district, which includes all but a few precincts in Kent County? Kent County Commission races are already taking shape. 2. The race to be governor of Michigan. In the revolving door that defines the Democratic side, former state Treasurer Bob Bowman was in for a few minutes. After announcing that he would explore a run last week, he took himself out of the running Monday. Denise Ilitch, daughter of Tigers/Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch, was also considering a run but bowed out. Alma Wheeler Smith and Virg Bernero remain the only declared Democratic candidates, but House Speaker Andy Dillon seems certain to make a formal announcement soon. Republicans, meanwhile, risk forming a circular firing squad. 3. Taxes? School officials are taking on the business leaders on Gov. Granholm's proposal to lower the state sales tax from 6 to 5.5 percent and extend it to services. The plan is in line with something proposed by the Business Leaders For Michigan, though their plan is contingent a series of spending cuts. On a related note, will any tax hikes pass on the May 4 ballot? Conversation starters: • Ed on something that is both erudite yet accessible, Keynesian yet Friedmanesque, complex but simple and mostly vital to the interests of every man, woman and child in greater Grand Rapids. • Jeff on global weirding.
