Our special guest, Nancy Sullivan, spills the tea on everything from the breathtaking nature to the welcoming vibe for our community. Plus, we'll dish on the arts, culture, and those delicious local eats that make Flagstaff a hidden gem. So grab your hiking boots, and let's get ready to fall in love with Flagstaff!Flagstaff, Arizona, is a hidden gem for LGBTQ retirees looking for a vibrant and welcoming community. With stunning natural beauty, outdoor adventures, and a climate that keeps things cool in the summer, it's no wonder that people are flocking to this high-desert paradise. Nancy Sullivan, a music professor at Northern Arizona University, shares her journey of moving from Seattle to Flagstaff for a job opportunity, and she hasn't looked back since. She describes the friendly atmosphere and liberal values that make Flagstaff feel like home, especially for those in the LGBTQ community. Retirees can enjoy a myriad of outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and even horseback riding right from their doorsteps, thanks to the abundance of trails and parks. Nancy's enthusiasm for her small ranch outside of town, where she lives with her wife and their animals, paints a picture of a life filled with adventure and tranquility. The climate in Flagstaff is another standout feature, especially for retirees who prefer a cooler environment compared to the scorching heat of Phoenix. Nancy discusses the high-desert climate, the changes due to climate change, and how the elevation impacts the weather patterns. She stresses that while the winters can be snowy and cold, they also offer opportunities for winter sports, making it a year-round playground for outdoor enthusiasts. For those considering Flagstaff as a retirement destination, Nancy emphasizes the need to acclimatize to the elevation but reassures that the lifestyle is worth the adjustment. The community spirit and the beautiful landscapes are definite pros, making Flagstaff an attractive option for anyone looking to retire in a friendly and engaging environment.Takeaways: Flagstaff is a stunning place filled with outdoor activities, perfect for nature lovers who want to stay active during retirement. The cost of living in Flagstaff can be a bit high, especially housing prices, so plan your budget accordingly. The LGBTQ community in Flagstaff is incredibly welcoming, making it a safe haven for retirees looking for inclusivity. Climate change is impacting Flagstaff, with hotter summers and less snowfall, so it's good to be aware of changing weather patterns. Wildfires are a real concern in Flagstaff, and retirees should have a solid emergency plan in place. Transportation options in Flagstaff are pretty good, with a decent public bus system and lots of bike-friendly routes available. Links referenced in this episode:wheredogaysretire.com
It’s been 20 years since Nancy Sullivan, a media specialist at Portland’s McDaniel High School, organized a poetry slam for students in the school’s library. That one slam eventually evolved into Verselandia, the citywide youth poetry competition now sponsored by Literary Arts. The slam allows students from across Portland to bring their original spoken word poetry to the stage of the Arlene Schitzer Concert Hall to be scored by a panel of judges. Alex Dang competed in the first Verselandia back in 2012. Qiana Woods won last year’s Verselandia and is set to compete again this year. They both join us, along with Sullivan, to talk about the history of the competition and the importance of slam poetry as a creative outlet.

Join me for the career reflections of Nancy Sullivan, Chief Energy Officer (CEO) of Transition Points, LLC. She’s also an author, speaker, facilitator and executive coach. Her first memory of public speaking is in the second grade and loving it. While she didn’t know what her career would look like, she knew she wanted to be on stage. Right out of college she’s selected for a leadership program at Mountain Bell nicknamed the “Jet Jockey Program." It’s designed to air-drop new leaders into new roles every six months -- without any training -- to see who survives, if they can think on their feet, and whether they are likable and can get along with people. Out of 24 “Jet Jockeys”, Nancy is one of three that thrives in this environment. She learns to trust people to teach you and how to get things done with people. She’s not a planner or worrier. She trusts her inner knowing and her guidance within. High on risk taking (she doesn’t have a risk inhibitor) she approaches life and new opportunities by asking: “What good can come out of this? This is going to be awesome!” --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

During his 22-year career, Benoit worked for numerous promotions including the World Wrestling Federation/World Wrestling Entertainment (WWF/WWE), World Championship Wrestling (WCW), Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), and New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). Industry journalist Dave Meltzer considered him "one of the top 10, maybe even the top 5, all-time greats". He married twice, and had two children (David and Megan) with his first wife, Martina. By 1997, that marriage had broken down, and Benoit was living with Nancy Sullivan, the wife of the WCW booker and frequent opponent Kevin Sullivan. On February 25, 2000, Chris and Nancy's son Daniel was born; on November 23, 2000, Chris and Nancy married. It was Nancy's third marriage. In 2003, Nancy filed for divorce from Benoit, citing the marriage as "irrevocably broken" and alleging "cruel treatment". She claimed that he would break and throw furniture around.
