On today's episode of Quick Charge, Southern Company's Tom Canada talks us through the utility's new, six-month pilot program that aims to overcome some of the perceived barriers to EV adoption by demonstrating the transformative potential of EV adoption in commercial fleets. Developed in partnership with Ford Pro, the Southern Company pilot will see more than 200 F-150 Lightning trucks incorporated into the utility's existing vehicle fleet, will leverage pricing signals and demand response to evaluate the impact of cost-effective charging within a fleet environment while demonstrating the efficiency of using established charging depots. In addition to exploring the cost-savings of EV vs. ICE, the pilot will also explore the use of software to automate charging schedules, which would enabling customers to charge at times that minimize both their electricity costs and reduce any potential strain on the electric grid. Tom Canada, a Southern Company sr. account manager who's been leading the charge on fleet electrification, joins us on today's episode to tell us more. It's Tuesday and we're fired up for another day in Retail Auto as we talk about the unfolding action in EV manufacturing. We discuss Lordstown Motors bankruptcy, the launch of the Silverado EV, as well as the moves Ford is making with its engineers. Show Notes with links:Ohio based Electric truck manufacturer Lordstown Motors has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and is now  taking legal action against Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn, accusing them of fraudulent conduct and a series of broken promises, including not abiding by an agreement to invest up to $170 million.Foxconn, best known for assembling Apple's iPhones, had previously invested about $52.7 million in Lordstown and holds nearly 8.4% stake. They stated that Lordstown breached the investment agreement when the automaker's stock fell below $1 per share. The company's flagship product, a pickup called the “Endurance” was plagued with fires during testing and CEO Stephen Burns resigned in 2021 after acknowledging overstatements of pre-orders for its electric trucks. The dispute could bring more scrutiny to Foxconn's electric vehicle ambitions and partnerships. Should Lordstown fail to find a rescuer, the once celebrated, Lordstown, Ohio factory now owned by Foxconn could attract overseas automakers wanting to build vehicles in the U.S.The Chevy Silverado EV is about to begin commercial production, promising a 450-mile range backed by a whopping 200+kWh battery. However, due to recent supply chain and economic pressures, Chevy is set to increase the initial $39,900 price point of the base model upon its 2024 launch.GM has closed orders for the truck as it begins to fulfill some of the 185k existing commercial orders. Production has started at GM's Factory Zero assembly plant in Detroit, with customer deliveries expected to begin soon. The vehicle weighs 8500 lbs and requires 61 PSI in its tires. Its 200kw battery is 50% larger than the F150 Lightning long range battery and twice as large as the standard range. A Chevy Bolt has a 65kw battery. Carplay still works with a popup warning that it will be discontinued with future updatesIn the ongoing positioning of EV manufacturing, Ford Motor Co. is preparing to lay off hundreds of salaried engineers across all three of its divisions;  EVs, ICE, and commercial vehicles to boost profitability and cut costs amid its $50 billion transition to electric vehicles. Earlier this year, CEO Jim Farley said the company needed as many as 25% more engineersT.R. Reid, a spokesperson for Ford, stated, “We're not cost competitive. We have specific priorities and ambitions that have implications for skills, assignments and staffing needs. These changes are consistent with that. They'll make us cost effective.”Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

GM aims to facilitate industry-wide standardization for building and connecting applications that connect vehicles to cloud and mobile devices through contributing its proprietary uProtocol technology.Frank Ghenassia, GM's executive chief architect of software-defined vehicles, says a standard software foundation to simplify and expedite development and connectivity. Ghenassia states, "rather than reinvent or try to apply the traditional automotive model that's been successful for hardware-driven features and try to apply that to software development."Let's remember Automakers have a history of joining forces to create innovative platforms and vehicles more efficiently.Toyota and Subaru developed the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ Ford and Volkswagen collaborated on electric vehicles and autonomous driving technologies. In 2013, BMW and Toyota announced a partnership to develop hydrogen fuel cell systems, sports car platforms, and lightweight technologiesA new partnership in Prince Edward Island in Canada will leverage EV technology in school buses to also provide emergency power. Quebec based Lion Electric is a Canadian-based electric medium- and heavy-duty vehicle manufacturer that produces the nostalgic North American yellow school bus. Last year, the tail end of Hurricane Fiona hit Prince Edward Island with winds of up to 93 mph, knocking out power for almost everyone. FRRRIIIIDDDAAAY CLLLLOOOOSSSEEE!  As everyone gets their running shoes on to close the month, we're talking about another price increase for the F150 Lightning, Texas' newly proposed tax on EVs, and Americans losing faith in higher education.Show Notes with links:Ford increased prices yet again for its F-150 Lightning electric pickup due to high costs, material prices, and supply chain constraints with the base price of $61,869, including shipping being 50% higher than the base price when the truck launched just a year agoThe Lariat Standard now starts at $75,974, while the Platinum range begins at $98,074The company cites strong demand as the model is sold-out for retail customers as commercial order banks prepare to open in mid-April.Ford just got the F150 Lightning factory back online earlier this month after recalling 18 electric trucks due to a battery-cell manufacturing defectThe company is aiming for an 8% pretax margin by late 2026 despite an anticipated $3 billion loss in its electric-vehicle business unit this year.In a bid to recoup lost gas tax revenues, Texas is considering a $200 annual fee for EV owners to contribute to the state's road repair budget. Critics argue the fee is unfair, as fuel-efficient vehicles pay less in gasoline excise tax. Texas funds a significant portion of its roadworks through a gasoline excise tax, prompting legislators to find alternative revenue sources as fossil fuel usage declines.Critics argue that the proposed $200 fee for EV owners is excessive, with some suggesting a fairer amount of $100, similar to California's fee. Some researchers and states are considering introducing an annual fee based on mileage to address privacy concerns and provide a fairer charge for EV drivers.Americans' faith in higher education is dropping quickly as a new WSJ-NORC poll reveals that a majority, 56%, now believe earning a four-year college degree is a bad bet, while 42% still have faith in its value. As recent as 2013, the numbers were basically flipped as 53% of Americans advocated for college and only 40% showed skepticismSkepticism is strongest among people aged 18-34 and those with college degrees, indicating a potential shift in higher education's future.Ted Mitchell, president of the American Council on Education, said, “These findings are indeed sobering for all of us in higher education, and in some ways, a wake-up call. We need to do a better job at storytelling, but we need to improve our practice, that seems to me to be the only recipe I know of regaining public confidence.”Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

How Ford Built The F-150 EV - Linda Zhang, Ford F-150 EV Chief Engineer “We talked to all customers. So we talked to truck customers, because part of it is, this is such a big population of customers that we want to evolve into an electric…We also talked to customers who weren't truck owners, but may have wanted to be and didn't go there for whatever reason that might be. And those would be pain points that then we'd have to try address right. And actually what came out of this is, really the building blocks for how we came up on this truck.” Linda Zhang at MOVE 2022 Converting the best-selling truck in America into an electric vehicle is a huge risk. The Ford F-150 has a macho image, which is not the typical EV buyer, to put it gently. So the massive success of the F-150 Lightning really shows the evolution of the electric vehicle and of the market for them. How did they do it? Listen to this fascinating interview with the woman who literally made it happen, Linda Zhang, Chief Engineer of the F-150 Lightning. It was conducted at a huge conference known as MOVE 2022, Reimagining Mobility, in front of an audience of hundreds of people, re-airing here on Electric Ladies Podcast. You'll hear: How Linda and her team at Ford started the design process and decisions they made What new innovations they put in this truck, besides converting it to an EV, that were gamechangers Who is buying this truck, unexpectedly so, and what it tells us about the future of electric vehicles. How they are managing the supply chain issues while reducing their carbon footprint. Here's insightful career advice from Linda's colleague Suzy Deering, Chief Marketing Officer of Ford …. ““Number one, go learn something from scratch and get really, really get dirty. Like get in there and understand from a scrappy standpoint. You're going to fail and you're going to learn things and then some things are going to work, some things aren't….if you're not uncomfortable, then you're not growing. And if you're not growing, you're not learning. If you're not learning, you're not per, you're not progressing….and Don't chase the title.” Suzy Deering on Electric Ladies podcast   You'll also want to listen to: (some might be recorded under our previous name, Green Connections Radio) Suzy Deering, Chief Marketing Officer of Ford – on bringing change to a legacy industry as an outsider. Welcome to *almost* the last day of November as we talk about leaked plans to revamp Tesla's Model 3, one F150 Lightning user's experience with a ‘bricked' truck, and is that app ‘social media' or ‘entertainment'?According to a Reuters exclusive, Tesla is working on the first revamp to their Model 3 sedan that includes an exterior update.Codenamed “Project Highland” one of the primary objectives is to remove unnecessary parts from the interior in order to focus on high value areas (like the display) and reduce production costs"Over and over, we found parts that are not needed. They were put in there just in case or by mistake. We eliminated so many parts from a car that did nothing," Musk said in an interview at a Baron Funds conference earlier in the month.Visible changes are a part of an effort to bring more ‘newness' to the vehicle as the market is flooded with competing vehiclesTesla has the most profitable EV on the market by far at $9500 per vehicle as contrasted with about $1300 for ToyotaEV enthusiast and Ford F150 Lightning owner Eric Roe (also owns a Kia Niro EV) tweeted that he plugged his truck into an Electrify America station, and heard a loud pop which was followed by a bricked truckHe followed up the tweet with details of being on a family vacation with his 2 dogs 1000 miles from home and posted pics of his truck on a flatbed which wouldn't even shift into neutral and had to be dragged onto the tow truckEmma Bergg, Global Director, Electric Vehicles & BlueOval City Comms for Ford Motor Company reached out right in the twitter feed and both Ford and Electrify America are said to have engineers on the incident to determine the causeThe twitter feed is full of user feedback on which is to blameNew tech, new problemsIs social media becoming less ‘social' and more ‘media'. Platforms like Tiktok are counting on it. Leroyson Figueira, a senior creative director at London-based marketing agency 160over90 explains: “It seems that every new digital platform that is not a website nor a utility app is immediately branded a social platform. Without pausing to think, TikTok has also been branded ‘social' by our industry when it is anything but.”“TikTok has film publishers and a film audience. It's not at all like Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. It's more like a TV channel or Netflix than a social platform. But the most democratic channel in history.”Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email Share your positive dealer stories: https://www.asotu.com/positivity ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion
