Doctors deal with years of school, grueling shifts, and emotionally difficult decisions. The medical profession is one of the oldest, dating back to 25,000 B.C. But true surgery was born in Egypt, circa 5,000 b.c. where the first public health system was established. In fact, Egyptians even performed root canals, much like we still do today. In Greece, medical ethics were born. Hippocrates penned the famous and still-used Hippocratic oath around 500 B.C., which states that doctors must do no harm. As human history has advanced, the science and practice of medicine has evolved. For patients, this might mean sending an email of thanks... For friends and family members of doctors, this week might be a good timeto bring them their favorite coffee drink, take them out to lunch, schedule a massage to show they are cared for and appreciated.

Dr. Marion Mass is a practicing pediatrician who is also a physician advocate and healthcare activist. She is driven to take back medicine for patients and the medical profession. The COVID-19 pandemic threw a spotlight on dangerous deficiencies within the US healthcare industry. At the center of these deficiencies are Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs) and Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs), which are healthcare intermediaries that increase costs and create drug and supply shortages. Although GPOs and PBMs don't produce or distribute a single product or provide direct care to a single patient, they control nearly 90% of the pharmaceutical supply chain. These middlemen amass huge profits because they enjoy government-mandated safe harbor protections at the expense of physician practice needs, sound medical decision-making, and patient choice. We don't often hear from a physician executive. When we do, I always appreciate their unique perspective. Physician executives have on-hands experience as a practitioner as well as an administrator. With us today is Dr. Craig Samitt who is the new CEO of the National Physician Enterprise for Surround Care which is the formation of two prominent organizations in Navvis Health a population health management company and Esse Health large multi-specialty group practice in St. Louis, MO. Craig's unique background affords him a broad view of the healthcare ecosystem. Craig was previously the CEO pf BCBSMN, and currently serves as the managing director for a venture firm. Craig has also worked in Clinical and leadership roles at Anthem, Healthcare Partners, Oliver Wyman and more. I have followed his career and am excited to have him with us today to share his perspective on industry challenges and changes.
Physicians are at a higher risk of suicide and suicidal ideation than the general population. About 400 physicians die by suicide each year. Suicidal ideation has been associated with high workload volume and medical errors. Physicians who experience suicidal ideation have been shown to be less likely to seek the help they need. In recognition of National Physician Suicide Awareness Day, this episode aims to contribute to the efforts and initiatives to reduce physician suicide rates. Stanford Medcast host, Dr. Ruth Adewuya, sits down with Chief Medical Officer of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Dr. Christine Yu Moutier, to discuss identifying signs of distress and suicide risk factors for physicians. The discussion will also include strategies you can utilize if you've identified issues/risk factors in yourself and/or your colleagues. March 30 marks National Doctor's Day (as well as National Something on a Stick Day!), and March 25-31 is National Physician's Week. These are generally occasions that are "celebrated" with swag (mugs, paperweights and scarves, oh my!), and/or pizza or doughnuts, perhaps a card or an email. And how many of us turn these gestures into weapons, resenting them as signs of our (low) value? The only ones who really lose here, are us.In this episode, I share a way to start to change this for ourselves, to start to choose to feel differently about these kinds of gestures, as well as little gifts from patients. And hey, if you want a party, plan yourself and your Physician friends a party! Why not?Are you a Physician struggling with perfectionism? Do you believe if you just worked harder you would figure it out, but you are too exhausted to try? If so, I invite you to check out my upcoming program, Healing Perfectionism in Physicians. This program is designed to help you let go of perfectionism, people-pleasing and frustration, and find more joy, authenticity and self-compassion. Click here to learn more.

No Storm Lasts Forever: Transforming Suffering Into Insight with author Dr. Terry A. Gordon As a cardiologist, Dr. Terry Gordon dealt with life-and-death circumstances on a daily basis. He learned that life is precious and tenuous; it can change in an instant. Such a dramatic shift occurred when his son, Tyler, was involved in a car accident, sustaining a severe spinal-cord injury that left him paralyzed. Leading his family through the experience, Terry's journey resulted in a spiritual awakening to a clearer understanding of life and the truths it has to offer. Terry has learned that our experiences become calamities only if we make the conscious decision to make tragedies out of them. Rather than lamenting the so-called adversities, we can choose to be grateful for them, embracing them as gifts from the Divine. These gifts provide fertile soil for growth and enlightenment, offering us the opportunity to transform turmoil, disappointment, and suffering into understanding, insight, and resolve . . . and such gifts are presented to you in No Storm Lasts Forever. One of Terry's missions in life is saving the lives of our most precious resource, our children. After the tragic death of Josh Miller, a 15-year old football player at Barberton High School, Dr. Gordon, as then president of the Summit County Ohio American Heart Association helped to raise the funds to place automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in every junior and high school. His community became the first county of its size in the nation to do so. For his efforts, the American Heart Association named him the National Physician of the Year 2002 For more information visit: http://www.drterrygordon.com/
