Joining the show this week is a talented multi-disciplinary designer with over 25 years managing a variety of projects. As a designer, she's led teams through the full life of a project. Our guest this week is none other than the Managing Director at AvroKO's Miami Studio, Kimberly Jackson! In a candid conversation with Host Dan Ryan, Kimberly shares her insights about her journey in the field of design and hospitality. She sheds light on her practice of incorporating "hospitable thinking" into all of the spaces she designs, highlighting the aspects of security, surprise, significance, and synergy, and emphasizes the role of diversity in the industry.Takeaways: Hospitality extends beyond mere spaces like hotels and restaurants, and is fundamentally a mindset. It revolves around how we interact with everyone around us, including friends, family, colleagues, bosses, and employees. The concept of hospitable thinking revolves around four key elements: security, surprise, significance, and synergy. It is important to create spaces that make guests feel comfortable, delighted, and important.Pushing boundaries and surprising both guests and the ownership team is a key aspect of innovative projects. Incorporating unexpected elements and layering them into the design process will drive innovation and shape future designs.Collaboration between the interior design team and the brand bureau is crucial in creating a cohesive narrative and strategy for each design. By combining their expertise, they can develop a unified vision that incorporates both spatial and branding elements. When crafting a spatial-heavy brand, it is important to set up a cohesive brand identity across all spaces. If a brand focuses on individuality, it is advisable to create unique and hospitable spaces that complement the brand without overshadowing it.The Hospitality Diversity Action Council (HDAC) was formed to create a more diverse hospitality industry at all levels. By embracing diversity, the industry can craft more hospitable spaces where everyone feels comfortable.Ensuring security in a space involves more than just the physical layout, such as not placing people in high-traffic areas. It also means creating an environment where all the elements work together seamlessly, providing comfort for everyone involved.Quote of the Show:“What is it about this project that is going to push the boundary a little bit? That's going to surprise the guest?” - Kimberly JacksonLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kimberly-jackson-aia-noma-11215a8a/ Website: https://www.avroko.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/avroko/?hl=en Shout Outs:15:50 - Brand Bureau: https://www.brandbureau.com/ 21:32 - Danny Meyer: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dhmeyer/ 27:56 - Hospitality Diversity Action Council: http://www.wearehdac.org/ 28:35 - Stacy Shoemaker Rauen: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stacy-shoemaker-rauen-766b253/ 29:34 - HD Expo: https://hdexpo.hospitalitydesign.com/ 29:35 - BDNY: https://bdny.com/ 37:06 - Saxon and Parole38:02 - Madame Geneva38:05 - Ghost Donkey: https://www.ghostdonkey.com/ 39:20 - MIT: https://www.mit.edu/ 42:18 - William Harris: https://www.linkedin.com/in/william-harris-901b1b139/ 42:19 - Kristina O'Neal: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristinao1/ 42:19 - Adam Farmerie: https://www.linkedin.com/in/adam-farmerie-a6a7b5a1/ 42:20 - Greg Bradshaw46:57 - Mike McCall54:05 - Tory Schenkkan: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tory-schenkkan-82b39812/ Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPXApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1sAmazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419

The COVID-19 pandemic threw a spotlight on dangerous deficiencies within the US healthcare industry. At the center of these deficiencies are Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs) and Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs), which are healthcare intermediaries that increase costs and create drug and supply shortages. It's National Physician's Week and in view of the challenges our healthcare providers are facing today in the midst of this frightening pandemic, all of us at Prescription for Success want to remember our physician colleagues during their special week and to say thank you for all that you do. We're grateful for your service. The first celebration of Doctors' Day took place in the tiny community of Winder, Georgia in 1933. The original celebration was a strictly local event to honor local physicians, and especially the late Dr. Crawford Long, whose gravesite is near Winder. Dr. Crawford Long was a surgeon and pharmacist who administered the first general anesthesia for surgery in 1842. Over the years, the commemoration of Doctors' Day spread across the south, and finally, on October 30, 1990, 55 years after the original event, the 101st Congress of the United States enacted a joint resolution proclaiming March 30. As National Doctors' Day in the United States. The date is significant because March 30, is the anniversary of the day that Dr. Crawford Long administered that first general anesthetic in surgery. Dr. Marion Mass along with Dr. Kimberly Jackson and Dr. Christina Lang applied to officially have physicians day changed to physicians week, which was accepted in March 2017. Rajeev and Bonnie interview their good friend in this episode, The Rev. Dr. Horace L. Griffin. Rev. Dr. Horace L. Griffin is an Episcopal Priest and gay man serving St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta, Georgia as Associate for Pastoral Care and Outreach. He is author of the award-winning book, Their Own Receive Them Not: African American Lesbians and Gays in Black Churches. The episode begins with Horace Griffin’s story of growing up in the Black Church in the Florida Panhandle where, at a young age, he was called into ministry by his community. However, within the Black Church, the calling and Horace’s sexuality were in conflict. Horace traces his painful journey of leaving the Black Church and finding a home in the Episcopal Church (the irony is not lost on Horace). The conversation winds through a discussion of Liberation Theology, an update on the progress around inclusion of LGBTQ folks in the Black Church and what it takes to stay in institutional Christianity these days. Stay tuned until the end to discover one of Horace’s pastimes. (Here’s a hint -- it has something to do with the White House.) Street Team Announcement (00:11) Conversation with The Rev. “...That’s what I heard a lot (when I got started). It’s an app, it’s tech, I have ‘zero experience in tech’. And every time I heard that, it was almost debilitating. If you’re thinking ‘I’m starting from nothing, how do I even start, I have zero experience’ and all the time that’s constantly what you’re hearing, it is kind of hard to get started. But I look at it like we’re never really starting from zero experience. We have something. If you lay out whatever project is in front of you and break it down in pieces there is something you know, something you can relate to.”Kimberly Jackson, Founder of Stand In, joins us.Full show notes available at www.discoveryourinnerawesome.com. Fulop & Small Jersey City Mayor; Steven Fulop, paid a visit to Atlantic City on Wed., April 13. Fulop admits he's on the fence about supporting casinos in North Jersey, and in his own backyard. Jersey City is a likely location of a casino, if voters are cool with gambling outside Atlantic City. That's why he wanted to get an up-close look at how gaming has affected AC over the past 40 years. Fulop might even campaign against North Jersey gaming if Jersey City ultimately says no. During his visit, Fulop was treated to a classic soul food lunch. Fulop experienced the popular soul food of Kelsey's; fried chicken, cornbread and collard greens with a side of macaroni & cheese. The Jersey City mayor also took a jitney tour of Atlantic City with Council President; Marty Small. Fulop was shown the non-gaming side of Atlantic City. Soul Food Sit-Down at Kelsey's Fulop is rumored to have his eye on being the next governor of NJ. Marty Small is also interested in higher office. Small is not shy about his interest in becoming the next mayor of Atlantic City. Seems like Marty Small, a veteran councilman and former local basketball star, has already started his 2017 mayoral campaign. During a press conference held on Wednesday morning, Small also suggests that it's FINALLY time to start investing..& developing….in Atlantic City. We agree. Fulop is reconsidering North Jersey gambling. He wants to better understand casino culture and the pros & cons for local residents. Fulop said, 'Maybe I need to rethink my position'. The Jersey City mayor also questioned the substantial amount of valuable, vacant land and empty buildings in Atlantic City. During the press conference, the New Jersey mayor said if he decided gambling would be against North Jersey’s interests, he would “work to kill it.” #AtlanticCity Soul Food Sit-Down at Kelsey's with @marty_small and Jersey City Mayor Stev Fulup pic.twitter.com/PYJL5B59NJ — AC Primetime (@ACprimetime) April 15, 2016 Kelsey and Kimberly Jackson are the team behind Kelsey's, well known for their excellent soul food, BBQ, and other southern specialties.
