Dealing with change can sometimes feel like ripping off a bandaid. Change is stressful, whether you are five or 55; and people respond to those changes in all different ways. And it is especially challenging when you are someone who likes structure, order, and predictability. In today's episode Leslie explores this topic with Mary. We met Mary last season when she was seeking support around grief and sleep for her then four-year-old-son, Oliver. Things have changed in Oliver's world, and that's why Mary's back. The past year has been full of transitions and adjustments for Oliver and his family. Starting a new school year and having a new baby in the home are some of those changes that most parents can relate to. (Insight Meditation Tucson) The Buddha suggested the core of his teaching in one short sentence: "I teach dukkha [suffering or reactivity or a sense of unsatisfactoriness] and the cessation of dukkha.” We explore this teaching in several ways. We see how the Buddha had multiple ways of talking about dukkha, with only, I suggest, the understanding of dukkha as reactivity, making sense of what the end of dukkha means. Dukkha as reactivity is explicated especially in two teachings, the Two Arrows and Dependent Origination. We look at the meaning of reactivity and how it manifests in our experience. We also see how reactivity can often be enmeshed with insight, such it makes sense to speak of transforming reactivity rather than simply suppressing it. We then explore five ways of practicing with reactivity. The talk is followed by discussion.

Whether through small gestures or grand efforts, the act of helping others creates a ripple effect that can lead to profound and lasting change. Our guest this week has one clear mission for his life: to be helpful to others. John Bruna, M.Ed., is the Co-Founder of the Mindfulness in Recovery® Institute. He is an author, educator, counselor, and mindfulness trainer. In addition to successful careers in counseling and education, John is a former Buddhist monk with over three decades of experience working in recovery. John has presented at TEDx, Google, Facebook, and conferences throughout the United States. In this inspiring journey, John shares how the worst day of his life - losing access to his daughter due to his substance use addiction - led him down a life-long journey of self-discovery, discipline, and mindfulness. Because of the internal work - learning how to have a healthy relationship with himself and finding peace in recovery - he got his daughter back years later and became the father (and grandfather!) figure he always wanted to be. Now, celebrating 40 years in recovery, John equips others with the tools to nurture new, positive thoughts, teaches them how to support the person they want to become, and helps them overcome negativity bias and remove suffering from their lives through mindfulness. Topics Discussed: Learning how to have a healthy relationship with yourself first Becoming a Buddhist Monk and working alongside the Dalai lama The difference between compassion and empathy How compassion allows us to reduce long-term suffering Recognizing every encounter as an opportunity for growth How mindfulness can lead to a meaningful life Mindfulness in Recovery® Institute https://www.mindfulnessinrecovery.com/mirinstitute/ Connect with us on Social: IG: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverymd/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/groups/positiverecoverymd/ FB Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/577870242872032 TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@positiverecoverycenter YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Additional Links: Want to receive the daily Positive Intervention from Dr. Powers' Positive Recovery Daily Guide? Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I will be responding to some questions sent in by listeners about wisdom. You don't have to wait until you're in your 50s or 60s to live with wisdom. You can step into it at any age. However, you will need to choose curiosity rather than judgment. In today's episode, we discuss: today's episode, we discuss: Living in wisdom requires curiosity, compassion, forgiveness, grace, self-awareness, and intentionality. Learn to move forward on a new path without bringing past issues/stories with you. You can't solve today's technical issues with yesterday's technology. The same is true for you. Is it the journey or the destination that creates sustainable success and fulfillment? One of the big gifts of choosing to live in wisdom is that you get to dropkick judgment to the curb and replace it with curiosity. Judgment holds you back, and curiosity opens endless possibilities. No Mud, No Lotus by Thich Nhat Hanh introduces ways to be in touch with suffering without being overwhelmed by it. It acknowledges that because suffering can feel so bad, we try to run away from it or cover it up by consuming, but unless we're able to face our suffering, we can't be present and available to life, and happiness will continue to elude us. On Christmas Day of 2020, she saw her daughter for 1 hour in between two consecutive abdominal debridement surgeries at a public hospital. She had an infection from a prior surgery and was developing sepsis. She couldn't have held her tighter. Sarah shared the room with two cancer patients and a pregnant drug addict. But at this moment, she could have been in paradise because she was a mum seeing and celebrating Christmas with her baby on Christmas day. And that, for her was abundance. Fast forward to 2022, Sarah spent a large chunk of her year in St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, running a multi-million dollar revops business, CattleDog Digital, from her hospital bed, facetiming the kids, watching raging floodgates rise and fall. She missed mothers Day, her birthday, and through a blur of surgeries (brain for the third time, ileostomy, reverse ileostomy, bowel resection, bowel untwisting, bowel removal, prolapse repair, and bladder repair she learned something but it's nothing new and is something you can use every day to live the life you want. Suffering as Compassion, Humility as Medicine: How to Overcome Arrogance The 12-Step Buddhist Podcast Episode 111 from Dodrupchen Jigme Tenpe Nyima, "Dropping the Attitude of Being Entirely Unwilling to Suffer Think about all the depression, anxiety and irritation we put ourselves through by always seeing suffering as unfavourable, something to be avoided at all costs. Now, think about two things: how useless this is, and how much trouble it causes. Go on reflecting on this repeatedly, until you are absolutely convinced. Then say to yourself: “From now on, whatever I have to suffer, I will never become anxious or irritated.” Go over this again and again in your mind, and summon all your courage and determination. 2 Cultivating the Attitude of Being Joyful when Suffering Arises Seeing suffering as an ally to help us on the path, we must learn to develop a sense of joy when it arises. Yet whenever suffering strikes, unless we have some kind of spiritual practice to bring to it, one which matches the capacity of our mind, no matter how many times we might say to ourselves: ‘Well, as long as I've got roughly the right method, I'll be able to use suffering and obtain such and such a benefit', it's highly unlikely that we'll succeed. We'll be as far from our goal, the saying goes, as the earth is from the sky. Therefore, use suffering as the basis for the following practices: c. Using Suffering to Overcome Arrogance As I explained before, [as long as we are in samsara] we are never independent or truly free or in control of our lives. On the contrary, we are always dependent on and at the mercy of suffering. So we must eliminate ‘the enemy that destroys anything that is wholesome and good', which is arrogance and pride; and we must do away with the evil attitude of belittling others and considering them as inferior. Episode 028: In this episode, which was inspired by last week's Sacred Alignment Workshop, we delve into the topic of suffering within the context of the Catholic faith. We begin by dispelling the misconception that life's purpose is the absence of suffering, a viewpoint held by many in the world. Instead, as Catholics, we recognize that suffering is an intrinsic part of life, something Jesus tells us in the gospel. Rather than questioning "Why did this suffering happen to me?" or blaming God, we should ask, "What's the purpose of this suffering, and how can I use it?" Here's what we cover in today's episode: Misconceptions about life's purpose The inescapable reality of suffering Shifting perspective on suffering The misunderstood message of the cross Transforming suffering into a force for good The role of grace in healing Doors are OPEN for The Embodied Catholic Woman Collective! Katyayanibetha - The Strong FoundationToday, I want to share a touching story that has left a deep impact on me, as I suffer from MCS myself. I had the honor of interviewing Katyayanibetha, an extraordinary individual who not only conquered Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) but also made it her mission to uplift others facing the same challenges.Meeting Katyayanibetha: An Emotional Encounterhttps://www.thestrongfoundation.com/From the moment I met Katyayanibetha, her resilience and warmth shone brightly. Our conversation revealed an emotional journey that moved me deeply.Katyayanibetha's Triumph Over MCSIn 2007, Katyayanibetha achieved a seemingly impossible feat—she cured herself of MCS. MCS can be a lonely battle, as it forces individuals to navigate a world filled with invisible hazards, often leading to isolation and despair. Katyayanibetha's personal victory over MCS was nothing short of miraculous.Compassion Fuels a MissionKatyayanibetha's remarkable trait is her boundless compassion. Instead of just celebrating her own recovery, she felt an inner calling to assist others still grappling with MCS. This compassion ignited a mission that has touched countless lives. The Heartfelt ConnectionWhile interviewing Katyayanibetha, I was struck by the emotional connection she establishes with fellow MCS sufferers. She truly comprehends the isolation and despair that often accompany MCS, and she is unwavering in her commitment to ensure that no one facing this condition feels alone.Transforming Suffering into HealingKatyayanibetha demonstrates that suffering can be transformed inLETS GO BRANDON GREEN PODCAST - https://letsgobrandongreen.com/

In it, Farahany details the new brain-scanning tech that has already arrived, and the risks this poses to our privacy and freedom of thought. Sigal and Nita discuss what this technology can currently do (and what it can't), how new devices might be used by corporations or governments to infringe on our rights, and the prospect of using new technologies to rid ourselves of painful or traumatic memories — even, potentially, before they've been formed. Key Takeaways:[4:17] Mark talks about the experience of almost dying from a rare form of lymphoma when he was in his 30s, and how it was the introduction to facing the unavoidable work of the friction that comes with life.[5:32] We must face what is done to us, but we are more than what has been done to us.[5:41] Mark talks about how the pandemic showed our generation it's time to learn to choose love over fear, and compassion over self-interest.[11:20] One of the first “faults” goes back to the Industrial Revolution, where this is the first time in history that where we live and work is separated.[17:16] Reality TV is our present-day virtual Colosseum.[27:23] Often spiritually, the safest place is in the center.[28:09] Every one of us has a daily and perennial choice between love and fear. But there's a difference between letting fear move through you and obeying it.[34:38] Through solitude, we restore our direct connection to the universe, and through relationships, we restore the wonder of being human and compassion and kindness.[37:11] The bad news is we're always falling. The good news is there's no bottom.[47:56] Mark's challenge and invasion: inhabit life fully by being as open-hearted and as loving as possible. This will require courage, strength, and kindness.Mentioned in This Episode:Productive FlourishingStart Finishing: How to Go from Idea to Done, by Charlie GilkeyThe AcademyMomentum AppMark NepoSurviving Storms: Finding the Strength To Meet Adversity, by Mark NepoThe Social DilemmaThink Like a Monk: Train Your Mind for Peace and Purpose Every Day, by Jay SetiNo Mud, No Lotus: The Art of Transforming Suffering, by Thich Nhat Hanh

Today, I'm joined by Winnie Chan Wang, a trauma-informed licensed acupuncturist, Reiki practitioner, shadow worker, and shamanic Tao healer. We discuss how trauma and stress impact our overall health, ways to reframe darkness, and why it's so important to practice detachment. Winnie describes the physiological symptoms that she suffered during her divorce, and how that experience inspired her to write her book, Honoring Darkness: Embrace Shadow Work to Nourish and Grow Your Power. Winnie breaks down her ‘recycling program' spiritual practice, which is all about honoring dark emotions like sadness, anger, fear, and shame, and letting out love, light, forgiveness, and compassion into the world. We talk about why it can be difficult to embrace our shadows, but highlight the results that come out of doing that work. Winnie shares how she processes trauma through the lens of Chinese medicine. She provides some insight into the Yin Yang principle and touches on how that has shown up in her life. At the end of the episode, she walks us through a powerful practice that she does when she's facing fear. Listen in to learn more about how trauma impacts longevity, and some tools that can help with processing those feelings. I am so happy to have you here today, I am interviewing my good friend, George Kinder. George is known as the father of life planning. He was a financial advisor who wrote this amazing book that impacted me many years ago around The Seven Stages of Money Maturity and inspired my work. And today, we're having a very different kind of conversation because he's talking about his latest book which he is giving away for free. And, it is poetry that's oriented to the present moment. He ended up chronicling with photographs and with these poems over the course of a year what he experiences in the place that he lives on a pond not that far from Walden pond. But how the nature in this seasons affect his life and it's just a really fun conversation. I love George's work, and I know you'll really enjoy it. He shares with us his insights: Right and, and I mean it's when you think about each moment is a moment potentially a freedom for you, and if you take more moments in your life and live more freedom in here. Every encounter you make is going to have that in it, and people are going to see that and feel it and spread it in their own way we don't know. It's a mystery how we impact things. And you know if you get lost in the civilization piece of it and think – ‘Oh it's got a loss, got to change or the votes have to go this way'. Well yeah, I mean that's what you're kind of fighting for, in a way. But if there's a certain randomness to it. There's too much energy around the attachment to the result, just do the good work. And, things will come about. Transformation will occur. And everywhere I go, I make sure this is part of it, because all we need is one piece of legislation that would require this – ‘a fiduciary standard of obligation is required for all institutions – corporate, nonprofit, and governmental to place the interests of all stakeholders of humanity; of democracy; and the living planet that sustains us. First, above their own self-interest so it's where the reason we're seeing this chaos right now is because we've allowed kind of greed and arrogance. We've rewarded more greed and arrogance that we've rewarded wisdom and compassion. Absolutely, I mean it's something we don't really even fully understand Confucius. I love reading the ancient masters and teachers. And, one of the things that he said he was, he lived in a time when there was tremendous corruption. And I don't know if you know this, but he died thinking that he failed. There was so much corruption in China was at that point in five or six or seven, different warring states, wars, terrorism, terrible stuff. And he figured out how to solve it. And, a lot of it had to do with being good people; being good; being kind; being responsible. And, he was asked once by, you know, kind of the President, or the Emperor, the CEO of this particular state. The guy said, ‘Hey, you know, how can I start my people, they're thieving, and they're taking advantage of each other; and they're rude; and they're all this kind of stuff. How can I stop them from doing that? And Confucius said – first, really very simple, all you have to do is stop doing it yourself'. Harvard-educated George Kinder revolutionized financial advice for more than 35 years by training over 4,000 professionals in 30 countries in the field of financial Life Planning. He founded the Kinder Institute of Life Planning in 2003 after 30 years as a practicing financial planner and tax advisor. George Kinder's latest book, Reflections on Spectacle Pond: The Weekly Edition is available as a free email subscription. Inspired by the 30 years he has spent living at the edge of a small New England pond, the book is a meditative guide to living in nature's cycle, week by week, and moment by moment. Among his seven books, he has written one on mindfulness, Transforming Suffering into Wisdom, and another book of photography and poetry, A Song for Hana. Kinder was the first winner of the Financial Planning Association's Heart of Financial Planning Award which recognizes “individuals who demonstrate commitment and passion in doing extraordinary work to contribute or give back to the financial planning community and/or the public.” He has been named “One of the 35 most influential people in financial services,” “One of the top Icons & Innovators in the financial planning industry,” “the first of 15 transformational advisors whose vision most changed the industry,” and has been inducted into the Financial Planning Magazine Hall of Fame. In 2017, he was awarded the Transparency Trophy by the Transparency Task Force. He has appeared on many radio and television programs and his expertise has been featured in The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, New Model Adviser, Forbes, Time Magazine, FP Today, The Journal of Financial Planning, Investment News, and The New York Times. Kinder is known for his dynamic presentation skills and has given speeches at professional conferences on five continents. He has spoken at Harvard University, Boston College, Coventry University, Merrill Lynch, Smith Barney, Fidelity, Charles Schwab, Allianz, AXA, The Financial Planning Association, The Personal Finance Society, and The National Association of Personal Financial Advisors. When we are children, unbeknownst to us, neural pathways are being wired together in our brains. This neural-biological wiring colors all our future decisions, how we deal with stress and trauma, and our level of contentment. If we experienced trauma as children, shifting how we interact with the world is not always easy. To discover strategies and concepts that help us heal, Positive Psychology Podcast Host, Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with two authors who have their own personal, transformational journeys. Dr. Elizabeth Stanley studies the neural biological wiring in our brain as it relates to stress and trauma. She shares concepts and strategies from her book, Widen the Window. And, Blake D. Bauer found his way out of addiction through meditation and mindfulness which he describes in his book, You Were Not Born to Suffer.

A soothing practice to gentle your energy tone. Starting with Spinal Washing/Golden Light, we illuminate our bodies while clearing energy residues. We practice our sadhanna with the addition of the Complete Breath and Rhythmic Breathing. This brings us to physical ease, using the Golden LIght to support any body area that needs attention. We also recognize our emotional flow and learn how to keep that flow without repetitive energies. Then we meet mental fluidity allowing our minds to smooth. We then release our personality level reality, moving into the higher realms of Light. From this vantage point we practice our subtle sensing of Light, receive a down pouring of illumination from above. We finish by sharing this pristine, clear light with another person, recognizing our connection to all humanity and all creation. #070- This week on The Meg Rock Show, I was able to sit down with Lena Franklin. Lena is a psychotherapist who integrates Eastern philosophy with Western neuroscience. Her holistic healing work is grounded in Buddhist psychology, mindfulness meditation, insight yoga, and energy medicine - in addition to psychodynamic foundations. Lena was raised in a hybrid Buddhist and Christian home and was introduced to meditation at a young age. Curated News 14 Tips for Planting Your Favorite Bulbs | BHG | Editors Important Events October 11, 1818 On this day, the Philadelphia botanist Zaccheus Collins to Jacob Bigelow in Boston. Zaccheus was a big-time plant collector and he had a large herbarium of most of the plants in the vicinity of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Zaccheus never published anything, but he corresponded with the botanists of his time, especially Henry Muhlenberg, Frederick Muhlenberg, Stephen Elliott, and Jacob Bigelow. In his letter to Jacob, written on this day, Zaccheus wrote, The schooner Hero [with] Capt. Daggett... may be at Boston as soon as the present letter. On board [is] a little open box containing a growing plant of Aristolochia serpentaria (Virginia snakeroot), roots of Euphorbia ipecac (American ipecac), Spiraea trifoliata( Bowman's Root), & Convolvulus pandurata (wild sweet potato vine). These were put up under the direction of the worthy Mr. Bartram, my friend, still living at the old Bot. gardens, home of the father of Amer. Botany. You will only have to pay the freight. October 11, 1825 Birth of Hermann Wendland, German botanist. He followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, both botanists, and served as director of the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen in Hannover. Each generation of Wendlends had their specialty; the grandfather worked with ericas or heather, the father's focus was phyllodineous acacias, and Hermann's love was the palm family, the Arecaceae. Hermann's monograph established the classification for palms. He's remembered in the South American palm genus Wendlandiella. During his life, Hermann turned Herrenhausen into the world's leading garden for palm cultivation and research. Herrenhausen's palm collection was unrivaled, and the focus on these stately and elegant trees resulted in Herrenhausen's construction of the tallest glasshouse in all of Europe. In addition to naming over 500 palm species, Hermann named the Arizona palm Washingtonia filifera in memory of George Washington. Hermann is also remembered for calling the genus Saintpaulia (African violet) after Baron Walter von Saint Paul. In 1882, Baron Walter was the Governor of the Usambara (“Ooh-sahm-bar-ah”) District in German East Africa. During his time there, he explored the Usambara Mountains located in northeastern Tanzania. There, in the cloud forests, he collected seeds and specimens of a small herb, which he sent home to Herrenhausen. Hermann immediately cultivated the little plants, and he recognized that they were an entirely new species in an entirely new genus. And so, he named the plant Saintpaulia ionantha (“saint-paul-ee-ah ii-o-nan' thah”). Today we call the plant by its common name, the African violet. Hermann also called it the Usambara veilchen ('Usambara violet'). Today, African violets continue to be one of the most popular house plants. But, at home in their native Usambara Mountains, the plants face extinction. October 11, 1875 Birth of Arthur William Hill, English botanist, and taxonomist. He served as Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Before he became director of Kew, he worked on a project for the Directorate of Graves Registration and Enquiries, the entity in charge of locating the graves of Britains service members who died during WWI. In 1915, Arthur became part of this project and served as horticulture advisor. The job required visits throughout Europe and the middle east. Anywhere the war was fought, Arthur visited - from France to Turkey, Italy to Palestine. In 1916, during the month of March alone, Arthur visited thirty-seven cemeteries. In 1917, Arthur visited the Somme Battlefields in France and wrote poignantly about the poppies and wildflowers that grew in the aftermath of the fighting that had occurred in the summer and fall of the previous year. Although the landscape was pockmarked from shells, Arthur wrote, ...One saw only a vast expanse of weeds of cultivation, which so completely covered the ground and dominated the landscape that all appeared to be a level surface. In July, poppies predominated, and the sheet of colour as far as the eye could see was superb; a blaze of scarlet unbroken by tree or hedgerow. No more moving sight can be imagined than this great expanse of open country gorgeous in its display of colour, dotted over with half-hidden white crosses of the dead. In no British cemetery, large or small, however beautiful or impressive it may be, can the same sentiments be evoked or feelings so deeply stirred. Nowhere, I imagine, can the magnitude of the struggle be better appreciated than in this peaceful, poppy-covered battlefield hallowed by its many scattered crosses. Unearthed Words After five or six years, I dig up my Roses about October tenth, cut the tops down to about twelve inches, cut out some of the old wood, cut off the roots considerably, trench the ground anew, and replant. The following year the Roses may not bloom very profusely, but afterward, for four or five years, the yield will be great. My physician in the[128] country is a fine gardener and particularly successful with Roses. We have many delightful talks about gardening. When I told him of my surgical operations upon the Roses, he was horrified at such barbarity and seemed to listen with more or less incredulity. So I asked him if, as a surgeon as well as physician, he approved, on occasion, of lopping off a patient's limbs to prolong his life, why he should not also sanction the same operation in the vegetable kingdom. He was silent. ― Helena Rutherford Ely, A Woman's Hardy Garden Grow That Garden Library Designing and Maintaining Your Edible Landscape Naturally by Robert Kourik This book came out in 1986. And in 2005, it was back in print by popular demand. Now, as per usual, Robert is ahead of the curve here. He's talking about incorporating edibles into the landscape and he was doing this way back in the eighties. So props to Robert. Now, what I love about all of Robert Kirk's books. Is how practical and experience-based is advisive. And as with his other books, he puts tons of resources at the end of this book as well. So make sure to check that out. In this book, Robert mainly focuses on the edible plants you can put in your garden. That will help fertilize the soil and attract beneficial insects like pollinators and then provide additional benefits like helping your garden with issues like erosion or sheltering your home from cold heat and wind. Robert also talks about how to incorporate edibles in trouble spots. So think about areas where water is a problem or where you maybe don't get that much sun. Well. Robert guides you through all of that and makes edible suggestions for those areas as well. In this book, Robert also talks about making your soil better. He walks you through a ton of tree pruning styles. And he even dishes up some gourmet recipes. Because, of course, if you're growing edibles, You're going to want to eat them. That's the best part. This book is 382 pages of edible landscaping from a master. Robert installed his very first edible landscape back in 1978. And he brings all of that experience to bear in this fantastic resource. You can get a copy of Designing and Maintaining Your Edible Landscape Naturally by Robert Kourik and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $18. Today's Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart October 11, 1926 Birth of Thích Nhất Hạnh (“Tick Nyot Hahn”), Vietnamese Thiền Buddhist monk and peace activist. His students call him Thay (pronounced “Tay” or “Tie”), which is Vietnamese for “teacher.” In 1982 he cofounded The Plum Village, a Buddhist monastery in southern France. Thay often uses nature to teach. In 2014, he wrote No Mud, No Lotus: The Art of Transforming Suffering. He once wrote, Wilting flowers do not cause suffering. It is the unrealistic desire that flowers not wilt that causes suffering. In Fidelity: How to Create a Loving Relationship That Lasts (2011), Thai wrote, Every time you breathe in and know you are breathing, every time you breathe out and smile to your out-breath, you are yourself, you are your own master, and you are the gardener of your own garden. In his 1992 book, Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life, Thay wrote, I have lost my smile, but don't worry. The dandelion has it. Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. Brian chats with George Kinder, the father of the modern financial life planning movement. George is the founder of the Kinder Institute of Life Planning. He has more than 30 years of experience as a practicing financial planner and tax advisor and has trained more than 3,000 professionals in 30 countries. In the episode, George talks about the importance of passion, and how his passion for creating a strong training model fueled him to draft his famous three questions. He also discusses how his purpose continues to evolve as his life grows and changes. Episode Highlights Mission-driven businesses are driven to a higher purpose. George defines a mission-driven business as one that is driven toward a larger purpose. “It's a business that is dedicated to a higher purpose, one way or another,” he said. But it's not just the business itself that can be oriented toward a bigger cause, George said. The people who run the business, the community, the staff, and the consumers can all be part of that larger purpose. “If they are going to be mission-driven, businesses also have to be really personal and really connected with who we are,” George said. Passion comes before precision. George Kinder is perhaps best known for his three Kinder questions: Imagine you are financially secure, that you have enough money to take care of your needs, now and in the future. How would you live your life? Would you change anything? Let yourself go. Don't hold back on your dreams. Describe a life that is complete and richly yours. Now imagine that you visit your doctor, who tells you that you have only 5-10 years to live. You won't ever feel sick, but you will have no notice of the moment of your death. What will you do in the time you have remaining? Will you change your life and how will you do it? (Note that this question does not assume unlimited funds.) Finally, imagine that your doctor shocks you with the news that you only have 24 hours to live. Notice what feelings arise as you confront your very real mortality. Ask yourself: What did you miss? Who did you not get to be? What did you not get to do? In the interview, George stressed that he didn't arrive at those questions overnight. He established his passion for training and life planning well before the three questions were set in stone. “The precision of that model took a while,” he said. “You got the passion for it, and little things get tweaked.” Passion can fuel you to do great things. When developing the questions, George noticed what brought his clients alive during their meetings. It led to a central question: “What brings them into a passionate relationship with their life that they're feeling like they can make a difference? That they can be who they want to be? And that they can make a real difference to the world around them?” For George, that passion was training life planners. Although he started his work as a financial planner and tax advisor as a way to earn money, his passion for helping clients craft a vision of their life -- and then ultimately step into that life -- fueled him to develop the three questions. “I became passionate about creating the strongest model for training that I could possibly imagine that would deliver advisors into being mission-driven advisors, having their own mission-driven businesses, and then delivering all of their clients into living mission-driven lives,” he said. One thing that still amazes both Brian and George is watching clients find their spark and come alive. Once clients find their passions -- and know someone believes in them -- they turn into problem solvers. “What astonished me was that when you lit somebody's fire, when you got them passionable about their lives, they went at it,” George said. “Suddenly, they solved a lot of the obstacles that stood in their way.” Resources + Links Kinder Institute of Life Planning George's books: The Seven Stages of Money Maturity: Understanding the Spirit and Value of Money in Your Life, Life Planning for You: How to Design & Deliver the Life of Your Dreams, Transforming Suffering into Wisdom:: Mindfulness and The Art of Inner Listening, A Golden Civilization and The Map of Mindfulness, Lighting the Torch: The Kinder Method(TM) of Life Planning, A Song for Hana & the Spirit of Leho'ula Brian's Social Media: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook About Brian and the Mission Driven Business Podcast Brian Thompson, JD/CFP, is a tax attorney and certified financial planner who specializes in providing comprehensive financial planning to LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs who run mission-driven businesses. A Jungian psychotherapist who approaches the most seemingly ordinary human experience with the curiosity and reverence of a philosopher and a poet, Mitchell Smolkin, MACP, RP, is a profoundly interesting conversation partner. We work through some big questions in this episode. Specifically, we discuss how therapy can intersect with spirituality in moments of great suffering to be a profound meaning-making tool in our lives. How do we find dignity in suffering? [1:30] Accepting suffering and resisting violence to the individual; Carl Jung's influence and his “appetite for mythology” as a tool for making meaning; 12 Step Recovery as a framework. How can we use art and religious narratives to make meaning? [8:45] The Art of Marc Chagall; Religious narratives as a tool for making sense out of daily life; Video games as mythological frameworks. Why is it so difficult to talk about spiritual and religious identity? [13:30] Complexities of religious identities; Jewish rituals of collective mourning after the crusades; Spiritual practice as a collective connection rather than the modern idea of self-development. How do you work with religion and spirituality in the therapy room? [20:00] Transforming suffering into poetry; Charles Darwin - no single organism is exactly the same as another; Carl Jung - everyone has their psychology. How can we acknowledge and work with our cultural and spiritual inheritance in therapy? [27:30] Forgiving frailties of the individual human psyche, re: group fanaticism, mob mentality; Mass graves of Indigenous children in Canada and the Catholic Church; Reckoning with the realities of history without judging. What would you say to people who are suffering right now? [36:30] Healing involves connection, and connection requires risk; Intimacy comes with pain because it touches against our wounds; Going deep into the lexicon of our pain For Mitchell's podcast, look up "The Dignity of Suffering" wherever podcasts are found.

In this episode Ariel discusses the issues that arise with the old world paradigm of creating a “gap” from our existing state to what we want to move towards in both our personal lives and organizational settings. It often creates fear and suffering that is not necessarily needed or useful for the world we want to create. As a collective, we can transform the suffering gap to presence and pleasure in the future with a loose hold on expectations and a strengthening sense of purpose, devotion and familiarity with discomfort in uncertainty. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ariel-grace/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ariel-grace/support
Episode 177: Dealing with Anger - Interview Lara Johnson Welcome back to the Love Your Story podcast. Today we are talking about ANGER and how to deal with it. Anger, like all the “negative” emotions we feel, is often something we feel like we have to suppress in order to be a “good” person. But what happens when we suppress our feelings rather than allow and experience them? I’m not advocating for zero self-control, rather I want to explore with you a real life story that can show us what suppressed anger can do to us and how acceptance and allowance of our emotions helps us heal. Today my guest is Lara Johnson. After being molested as a child Lara was angry. Anger became her constant companion, but also her shackles. Giving herself permission to BE angry changed her life and allowed her to move on once and for all. Stay tuned to hear her story and to talk to this now certified life coach as she helps us with tips and understanding for dealing with our own emotions. Tune in to the audio program to hear Lara's interview. Thick That Hang said, in The Heart of the Buddhas’s teaching: Transforming Suffering into Peace, Joy and Liberation, “Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If, in our heart, we still cling to anything - anger, anxiety, or possessions - we cannot be free.” and, Mark Twain said, “Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.” All our emotions, the ones we label “good” and “bad,” are perhaps all here to teach us love. In this case the idea of self-love being key - giving ourselves permission to feel what we feel and love ourselves through those emotions we label as “negative” or “bad.” When the key to healing is allowing space for us to feel our way through the experience without judgement of ourselves, we can move more smoothly forward through our lives. We propel ourselves forward through the experiences that feel like road blocks. So much easier said than done, especially because this allowing may be in direct conflict with how you’ve been trained - not to allow a place for “bad” emotions. But today’s discussion is a beam of light on how we make it through with love and grace. Your challenge this week is to choose a powerful emotion you are feeling - something WILL come up this week, and instead of fighting it off or feeling bad for feeling it, practice sitting with it and just letting it be with you for a bit, without judgement. Ask it how long it needs to stay and notice what it may be protecting you from. Some of these insights will give you the clarity to accept with love. Thanks for being here today. Don’t forget you can get your copy of LIFE - Living Intentional and Fearless Everyday - the 21 LIFE connection challenges on Amazon - start the 21 Challenges to create more self-care, more connection and more possibility in your own life or give it as a gift and help someone else create these wonderful things in their life. Join Adam Coelho for a 20 minute guided meditation in which we practice a Tibetan practice called Tonglen in which we imagine ourselves transforming suffering into love and kindness and sending that love and kindness out into the world. During this practice we begin by calming the mind and then transition to the Tonglen practice in which we imagine ourselves breathing in suffering, transforming it into love and kindness and sending it back out into the world. We close by practicing embodying hopefulness and sending that out to those that need it most right now. I hope you find this guided practice to be supportive. As a reminder, I will be releasing a new guided meditation practice every other week, alternating with a new podcast episode (Hit the Subscribe button!). Since this podcast is all about developing mindfulness and living the life that is ours to live, here and now, I share these practices with you in hopes you use them and grow in your own self awareness and self compassion. The spiritual path isn't all just for fun. We're trying to do something here. We're trying to reduce our suffering and change the way our suffering spills out of us and on to other people. But how do we do that?
Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh says that the point of spiritual practice is to generate happiness and transform suffering. In this talk to the Anacortes Mindfulness Community, Jonathan Prescott explores what this means and how we can practice happiness.

In a listener-requested podcast I relate how the story of releasing cows from Thich Nhat Hanh’s book No Mud, No Lotus: The Art of Transforming Suffering, helped me find freedom from suffering over a series of minor personal losses and disappointments...and freedom FROM the losses themselves. We each have "cows" we're grasping onto. According to Thich Nhat Hanh, our biggest "cows" are our narrow ideas of happiness. We suffer because of grasping to those ideas. Every one of us has cows to be released. We continue to suffer until we are able to release the very ideas themselves. Join me as I tell me story about finding freedom from the suffering of loss—and from the losses themselves—by digging my lotus roots into the mud of life, to become relaxed and tender, instead of rigid.

No Storm Lasts Forever: Transforming Suffering Into Insight with author Dr. Terry A. Gordon As a cardiologist, Dr. Terry Gordon dealt with life-and-death circumstances on a daily basis. He learned that life is precious and tenuous; it can change in an instant. Such a dramatic shift occurred when his son, Tyler, was involved in a car accident, sustaining a severe spinal-cord injury that left him paralyzed. Leading his family through the experience, Terry's journey resulted in a spiritual awakening to a clearer understanding of life and the truths it has to offer. Terry has learned that our experiences become calamities only if we make the conscious decision to make tragedies out of them. Rather than lamenting the so-called adversities, we can choose to be grateful for them, embracing them as gifts from the Divine. These gifts provide fertile soil for growth and enlightenment, offering us the opportunity to transform turmoil, disappointment, and suffering into understanding, insight, and resolve . . . and such gifts are presented to you in No Storm Lasts Forever. One of Terry's missions in life is saving the lives of our most precious resource, our children. After the tragic death of Josh Miller, a 15-year old football player at Barberton High School, Dr. Gordon, as then president of the Summit County Ohio American Heart Association helped to raise the funds to place automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in every junior and high school. His community became the first county of its size in the nation to do so. For his efforts, the American Heart Association named him the National Physician of the Year 2002 For more information visit: http://www.drterrygordon.com/
Dear friends, This week, we continue with talks given by Thich Nhat Hanh at Deer Park Monastery in October. In this talk, Thay delves deeply into conciousness, both individual and collective. As individuals, we can selectively water our positive seeds and take good care of our negative seeds. Thay invites us to also be selective in our relationships and the community that we live in, as they contribute to the collective conciousness that we consume every day. With this care, we can create a foundation where transformation of our suffering is possible. Please take a moment this week to visit deerparknunnery.org and donate to the building of a place where the Deer Park sisters can live. The volunteers at the Deer Park Dharmacast thank you. Remember, you can always find the Deer Park Dharmacast at dpcast.net, Facebook, iTunes and Twitter. Now, enjoy this moment to stop and look deeply.
