It's Super Bowl week here at One Hit Thunder, and to celebrate, we're playing fast and loose with the term “hit” so we can discuss multi-sport athlete turned musician Deion Sanders and his 1994 single “Must Be The Money.” If you were a sports fan in the '90s, you knew how electrifying Prime Time was on the field, but did he match that intensity on the mic? Hammer seemed to think so, even if the public at large didn't necessarily agree. Stay tuned so you can, at the very least, be impressed with Neon Deion's sports accomplishments. September 10, 1989. The Atlanta Falcons are excited to witness the debut of their highly-anticipated rookie, whom they took fifth overall in the NFL Draft earlier that year. He's young, he's flamboyant, and he has not one, but two already-famous nicknames: Neon Deion and Prime Time. This is Atlanta's first introduction to Deion Sanders, who would become a sports and cultural icon for the city, as he'd eventually call Atlanta home for the early parts of his professional football and baseball careers. But along with the money, endorsements, and fame come scrutiny, misperceptions, and controversy, particularly when he attempts the unprecedented move of playing in an NFL and MLB game on the same day. Today, Deion Sanders makes his professional football debut. Why did he draw so much criticism from certain media members? And what made Deion Sanders a unique figure in sports history? Special thanks to our guests: Chris Miller, quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons from 1987-93; Mark Bradley, columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution; Anne Scearce, former client services manager for Nike; Jimmy Raye II, NFL coach from 1977-2013; and Sid Bream, former first baseman for the Atlanta Braves. Neon Deion has some thoughts on changes in Canton.
The Buffalo Bills extended their preseason winning streak to nine games by beating the Indianapolis Colts. But most importantly, the Bills escaped without any major injuries. But hosts Jamie D'Amico and big Chris Newton see a couple of other items they found encouraging. Among them are the performances of some backup players, including linebacker Joe Giles-Harris, running back Duke Johnson, and defensive tackle Tim Settle. They also were happy with the performance of a pair of rookie cornerbacks, Kaiir Elam and Christian Benford, as well as fellow rookie, linebacker Baylon Spector. The focus then shifted to comments made by Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders. Neon Deion believes that he should be considered to be on a higher level than other Hall of Famers. Yes, Bruce Smith made comments specifically about tackle Tony Boselli, but Sanders went full "Primetime" in his comment. That said, D'Amico believes that too many players get the honor, while Newton agrees with Sanders that there should be a higher level of recognition. It's Prime Time on The Limits. NFL legend Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders sits down with Jay to talk about his latest chapter coaching college football. The two-time Superbowl champion decided to bet on HBCUs as the future of the NFL, successfully making what Sports Illustrated has dubbed one of the most shocking recruits in college football history. The head coach of Jackson State University now feels his calling is to raise the next generation of young, Black athletes. He's coaching them to be better on and off the field, and he's advocating for them to finally get paid for their name, image, and likeness. As Sanders puts it, his tenure as a coach is "not a moment, but a movement." And just as with his own NFL career, Neon Deion is building the kind of coaching record that proves his critics wrong. You can watch Sanders in action in his new Barstool Sports and SMAC Productions docuseries Coach Prime. New episodes air Tuesdays and Thursdays on all Barstool Sports digital platforms at 8:00pm ET through March 10.For sponsor-free episodes, weekly bonus content, and more, subscribe to The Limits Plus at plus.npr.org/thelimits. Black On Both Sides Episode #129 Both Kanye’s and Drake’s albums have been released. I am assuming you have had time to get through them. I didn’t. actually. I listened to Donda, but CLB only got half a listen. Which album is AOY? Or do either of them qualify? We all know K.Dot is gearing up for a release. Do either of them stand a chance? Kunta finally comes to the realization that the legend of Aaliyah is mostly just a legend. I do not say that lightly, but I do say it in jest. You would have to be a member of the old Slack room to fully understand. We battled more than once about how important her voice was to R&B. Either way, he revisited some of the recently re-released albums and has a new take. Neon Deion is bringing attention to HBCUs by being head coach of Jackson State. We look forward to seeing his rise as a coach. If nothing else, we appreciate his commitment to attempting to put HBCU sports on the map. Black Lives Matter is a distant echo in the halls of last summer. Finally some form of justice begins for a couple of the victims of brutality on black people. Abortion after 6 weeks is no longer a thing in the state of Texas. This includes rape victims. We actually agree on how awful this one is. However, there is a caveat. And we need to get granular. 42 Days Of Choice #BOBS129 Support the show by paying your laugh tax or becoming a premium subscriber HERE Get Show merch here: MERCH
