This week's critter creates one of the most beautiful shells in the ocean. But they're not your run-of-the-mill shell-dweller: the pupu tarakihi or knobbled argonaut (Argonautus nodosus) is one of the world's weirdest octopuses. Female knobbled argonauts create their beautiful translucent shells by excreting minerals out of two enlarged tentacles. They are the only creature in the world that makes a shell out of their own arms. The shells are both a nursery for their eggs and young and a place to tuck away as they drift on the ocean surface.

Even breaking the law (Judas Priest for you metal fans out there)! This episode we talk about the Sidecar cocktail was created actually in France by Harry McElhone at the Ritz Hotel back in 1922. The sidecar was the way the American Captain's would get to the bar for the early drinks. Harry McElhone was a Scottish born who then immigrated to USA and then when Prohibition started he headed to France. With this move to Europe, it gave him the opportunity to work with new spirits and ingredients that he would have not be available to him in USA. This cocktail contains Cognac (French brandy …distilled wine) and Cointreau (French orange liqueur). Ta'u Pupu'a is one of nine siblings. His family originally from the Kingdom of Tonga emigrated to Salt Lake City. Ta'u at 6'5", earned a full-ride scholarship to play defensive line for the local Weber State University football team. His football career continued to provide promise. In 1995 he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns (soon to be the Baltimore Ravens). Unfortuantely, that's as far as he got.During his time with the NFL, Ta'u broke the arch in his foot, effectively ending his football career as quickly as it began. Ta'u was forced to consider a different future for himself, so he moved to New York City in a leap of faith. A lucky encounter with a Polynesian opera singer led him to try out for Juilliard, and thus his new career as an internationally renowned opera tenor was born. Reaching the pinnacle in your sport or profession is an amazing achievement, but to do it in two separate ones is truly remarkable! How many former NFL athletes do YOU know who also happen to be internationally acclaimed opera singers? Well, until today, likely none. Here’s your chance to hear the incredible story of my guest today, Ta’u Pupu’a, on the Make Your Mark podcast. You will hear about the challenges, hurdles, and ultimately, successes that Ta’u went through to be where he is today. “There are a lot of times when you’re on that stage, and you're singing with other artists but you feel alone, because in football you play as a family, as a team, but in opera what I've noticed is everyone wants to be the quarterback, everyone wants to throw that touchdown pass,  everyone wants to be in the spotlight. But luckily I’m 6’5”. In my mind I look at the opera as a family, as a unit, and I look at the conductor as the coach making sure the plays are all running smoothly.” If you’ve been following this podcast, you know that a common thread throughout is the story of the transition from either the playing field, court, rink, or even battlefield into a venture creating a lasting and positive impact, and Ta’u fits perfectly into that mold. It took a full year of being depressed and without direction for him to answer the calling of being a singer, and taking a giant leap of faith towards NYC. “After the injury I struggled. I made the decision to go home, and driving from Baltimore to Utah was a two day drive.  I had a lot to think about. What was I going to do? What was my life going to be? I was depressed for about a year, I couldn't watch football, couldn’t watch my teammates be out there playing while I was sitting at home. I thought about  what was my true calling in life, and I remember looking outside, and said step left, move forward, and go and sing. I thought, this is crazy, I’ve been playing football since I was 10, and now I’m going to go sing. I decided to do that, so I packed my one suitcase and moved to New York.” Ta’u is such a positive guy, with commitment, drive, perseverance all rolled up into a 6’5” body that can belt out an aria with the best of them. You will be inspired by the his determination to succeed on two big stages, performing at the top of his game, and leaving any doubters behind. Happy listening! “How do you meet people in the music industry? I got a job across from the Metropolitan Music Hall, the greatest opera house. I walked into this restaurant and said “Hey I’d like to work here”, and soon enough became the maitre d’! I picked that location because I knew that all the opera singers would cross the street to eat there, and Julliard was also across the street, and that's how I met my current colleagues! All these big opera singers would come into the restaurant, and I learned a lot by just watching. The same method applied to football, you learn by watching, and you go out and do it. You learn by examples - good examples.” “For me I had to go back to God and believe that things are going to work out no matter what. Multi-Sport Athletic Star Anthony Allen and Mark Pattison were teammates at the University of Washington. Before that they were cross-town rivals. Anthony attended Garfield High School in Seattle.  Twice his football team came in 3rd in state in Washington. Always a fantastic athlete, Anthony excelled at basketball, football, track. His on the field performance made him a highly sought after recruit. Stays Home with UW Anthony ultimately picked University of Washington, staying home in Seattle rather than playing for other powerhouse football universities. Though not his primary position, UW wanted wanted him to play defensive back. Ultimately, Anthony made the right choice. Injuries to teammates forced Allen into service at Quarterback instead of corner. This exposure allowed Allen to develop into a better overall offensive player. After serving the teams’ needs at QB, he was given his choice and allowed to move to wideout. USFL Draft Anthony stood out on an athletic UW team as a draft worthy wide receiver. Allen was taken in the 3rd round by the Tampa Bay Bandits of the 1983 USFL draft. Anthony was also selected in the 6th round in the NFL in the same year–back in 1983 the USFL drafted before the NFL. The Los Angeles Express traded for Allen’s rights. Anthony signed and played the last eight games of season for the Express catching 37 balls and 3 touchdowns. NFL Career Anthony always had a nose for the end zone. While playing with the St. Louis Cardinals, he had 8 catches for 255 yards and 3 touchdowns in a single game; a record that remains for the Cardinals franchise. Anthony also played for the Washington Redskins. During his time in DC he scored a touchdown on an 88-yard pass. Finally, in 1987, Anthony and the Redskins won Super Bowl XXII. Anthony and Mark caught up on memories, kids and caring for family in this sweet episode, because sometimes, you got to slow down to catch up. You get “Ah, mes amis.” Gaetano Donizetti wrote this high-stakes aria for his opera La Fille du Régiment. The young hero Tonio has just enlisted in the army and received permission to marry the girl of his dreams. “Ah, mes amis” is his celebration: Tonio’s bursting with so much joy that the guy sings nine – count ‘em, NINE – high Cs. And after surveying this Mount Everest of tenor arias with a singer, a vocal coach and a former NFL player, you'll hear tenor Javier Camarena scale its heights from his base camp on the Metropolitan Opera stage. The Guests Renowned tenor Javier Camarena made his professional debut singing the role of Tonio, but remembers it as both exciting and terrifying: as a young singer in Mexico, he didn't really speak any French. "I think it was like, Spang-French or something like that," he says, laughing about it now. When Lydia Brown first came to New York, she used to line up on Saturday mornings to get cheap seats to the Met Opera. Now she's working inside the building as a vocal coach to some of the world’s top singers.   Ta’u Pupu’a is a former defensive end for the Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Ravens. After a career-ending injury, he attended Juilliard Opera Center and transformed from a tackler to a tenor. He now performs at opera houses across the world.

T’au Pupu’a came to the United States from Kingdom of Tonga at the age of five. He grew up in a home of modest means in Salt Lake City, Utah and started playing football at the age of ten. Legendary football coach Bill Belichick discovered him while he was playing for Weber State University and he joined the Cleveland Browns as a defensive lineman. But in his second season, a nasty injury ended his NFL career. Despite almost no formal musical training, he decided to follow a new dream to become a professional opera singer. After struggling in New York City for five years, he met opera superstar Kiri Te Kanawa at a book signing at the gift shop of The Metropolitan Opera. And she helped him earn a scholarship to The Julliard School, America’s most prestigious music conservatory. This episode we made more pseudo chinese food than your pupu can platter with SHOCKING results. Well, we're shocked at least.  The SummerRoll Spritz   Makes two cocktails.   In a shaker, combine: Half a lime Handful of cilantro Three shots gin One shot ginger cilantro simple syrup(recipe follows) ice Shake for 15 seconds then pour over ice. Top with coconut LaCroix. Ginger Cilantro Simple Syrup Dissolve two cups of sugar in two cups of water in a medium pot over medium heat. Add about a cup or two of peeled, chunks of fresh ginger and a bunch of cilantro, including stems. Allow it to simmer for about 15 minutes, then let it steep off the heat for several hours. Pupu platters and tiki drinks were made for each other.  Kalani and Sunshine sample singed meats, spicy dipping sauces and a new cocktail called Cherry Bonzai.  We also review two new rums on the market.  Sun Rum and Bacoo Rum have popped up on a few shelves in our local liquor barns and we enjoyed both, sharing our tasting with you.  Its a tough job.

This model is now falling away. Unique Geographical Area Laurence & Zahra are domiciled in the Northern South Island in the area covering Nelson, Motueka, Takaka & Golden Bay. This whole area is a wellspring of change agents devoted to pioneering ways that people can live, be, do, work and thrive in communities and other ways of life. From the renown Riverside community the very well known conscientious objector movement of the 2nd World War – now going for over 70 years - who were prepared to stand up for their principles and go to prison - To the Tui and Rainbow communities both been existing for around 30 years and a number of others spread around the area too. There are many different initiatives happening in many different areas. In education in Golden Bay there is more self-directed learning and other initiatives asking children what they wish to engage in, what they want their schools to look like now and in the future – plus many school Principle’s are engaged in looking at a new vision of education that is very much aligned with the NZ Government’s 2025 educational vision of more community input that incorporates holistic systems. Plus ‘I Design’ studio – teaching children from grass roots how to use electronics - designing – coding - creating IP - yet have a preference to ‘open source systems’ for free – and ‘make a space’ initiated by a retired engineer to create interest within the localised rural community. Which typifies the releasing of the potential of new technologies of decentralising and re-localising non colonising … This includes production manufacturing and invention based on how do people re-think, redesign, remake reinvent the world - and you are not going to put a cap on it. Local Currencies In Takaka, the Hands system of Greendollars/timebank- is coming up to its 30th anniversary – with 10% of the regional population as members. “How about a non-dollar system”. It’s a LETS system a local currency system, paper vouchers and an electronic platforms. In NZ - Living Economies. That hundreds of lets system globally use Community Exchange System out of South Africa. ‘Localising Food Project’ - From the Tui community creating documentaries and educating people to show the issues as why it is important to return to locally produced foods; The loss of seed varieties especially seed that has specifically adapted to each bio region so that they can grow and are resilient to bugs etc so no use of pesticide etc – plus teaching about free food forests – throughout NZ. So what is happening in the top of the South Island is a reflection of wider movement somewhat as an incubator of new ideas as well as community engagement with these inventions and ideals. Groups of people holding very high ideals and yet being pragmatic in their practice of them. Practical Community Building Laurence and Zahra want to know how to make practical these revolutionary, visionary - ideals and integrate them into people’s lives. Do a web search and youtube search on localising food projects – there is a whole archive for film footage of best practices – to save heritage seeds, to create food forests and food gardens in schools.- Especially Robin McCurdy one of NZ’s much loved permaculture pioneers. Raw milk dispensing by farmers at the farm gate - called Village Milk via a chilled dispenser as well as a glass bottle dispenser that you can buy – it’s practically organic milk – it just has no certification – but its organic by practice – this is being franchised out across the country though government regulators endeavour to get in the way due to health concerns – however it is a revolution in the making. Especially, assisting with a healthy gut etc. and also the products of eating from fresh milk. This is big and it will only grow when people realise that the milk they are drinking may be from - powder. Those white plastic supermarket bottles with a dark interior – which do not state anywhere on the plastic bottle that the milk has been pasteurised or homogenised – check it out - very strange. Meanwhile NZ continues to slumber ☺ Joel Salatin in the US is mentioned as a keen raw milk farmer and the challenges he has to be able to sell from the farm gate. Pupu Springs a Natural Event A Taonga among Maori with some of the purest water on our planet – deeply sacred place there are many springs over this whole Golden Bay, Takaka, Motueka Nelson area and Laurence poetically describes this in that the people of this whole region who are drinkers of such blessed water are themselves ‘wellsprings’ of goodwill, creativity and community as like the Pupu springs - expressing pure powerful goodness that gushing to the surface spreads its transparent latency among the populace that is springing forth this possibility of conscious change and transformation. What is going right for us in the world today Zahra & Laurence talk about the good things going right for us in the world today … and this is what the community game is all inclusive of. They both created and designed it as inherently we have the solutions within us as well as the many solutions already been worked on and worked out right around our planet – (Best Listen to this to fully realise the potential of what this game presents). And a ‘Maker World for Schools’ – Instead of saying in 40 year time the oceans will have no fish and then move on to page 47 and focus on some other subject – what is being said now – is ‘what can we do about it?’ and have a discussion and do projects around finding innovative ways to look what can be done to bring about the much needed change to save our fishing grounds? And make this an important, empowering learning. Because all the maths, the language the sciences can still be learned by applying them to the subject being studied and looked at – the subject being totally inclusive of other learning modalities. Children learn better on experiential project based learning - especially projects that matter to them – that inspire them – engages them fully so they learn by embedding topical and deeply focused information that always works towards the best possible outcome. If the schools focus on right lively hoods – why not focus on enterprise education – today and the social implications of working together? If the science is correct – that the trajectory is so dire then why waste children’s education on intellectual subject matter totally unrelated to survival – when the prognosis of our common future is so heavily weighted against life as we know it today. Revolutionize Education! This is where Zahra and Laurence want to see schools transformed – and with Mainstream education realising that 1/3 or teaching jobs will be redundant in 10 years time due to automation and robotics – this is a perfect time for education and learning curriculums to totally up their game - be reinvented and become holistic community wide – lifelong learning and equip children with the many 21st century learning methods and subject matter to focus on their basic growth as a human being living on a planet. This translates to an empowered inner resourced and savvy younger generation equipped to face the future head on. Which maker world for schools inspires them into the new collaborative culture. Self Funding Community Projects The next step is how do you self fund yourself. – Listen to the interview. Other Subjects Covered Technology breaking out. - disruptive technologies Self driving trucks – soon they will be everywhere as they have only a simple A to B journey – many drivers will be out of a job. Millions of jobs worldwide will see jobs cease to exist. All rote or repetitive jobs within a decade will be going within a decade – by robots or a computer program – UBER - you know about the taxi revolution – they state that in 4 years self driven cars will be here and by 2025 fast decking numbers of petrol cars will be on the road. Community to come together when so many jobs start disappearing. Could there be a student revolution start soon that is totally global and could kids shun school until the adult population can deliver a plan for a viable, sustainable future solution orientation that factors the requirements for all? Decentralisation to Empower People Are Governments obsolete – but just have not woken up to it? Scary as the situation is – the only option is to reinvent how we can live – together etc transformation now is our only option Thus Zahra & Laurence see the urgent need for a training program with all the new project management tools that are now available – because we NOW have the tools to go forward to shape the new paradigm. And they both state that they have most of the keys so that you can virtually take them out of a box and put them to work. We are on the cusp of creativity that we have never seen before – 3 d printing of objects, machines, houses, gadgets etc - clothes will be dialled up or downloaded from a computer to a sewing machine device and the technology is already here. They see humanity on a cellular level as a neighbourhood and they want to see our planet healed and the neighbourhood at the same time. It’s an evolution revolution and it’s happening around our planet and Laurence & Zahra are doing their part. Bubbles of creativity and community are popping up everywhere around our planet - they are becoming more and more = spreading out until their sides touch and then the tipping point will be reached and they will all merge into the new paradigm. Food is an important piece of the jigsaw – have control of what we are putting into our body temple. Then we have autonomy – we have choice, health and better strategies and outcomes. Other Interview Topics Ethics and values will become an important issue. What if Greenpeace had incorporated Greenpeace Inc and set up a solution oriented arm – to provide for everyone everyone. Because they would have tens of millions of potential investors, stakeholders buyers suppliers employees – the could have been huge by now and gaining more adherents because their products and services were second to none! And ecological sustainability would be embedded throughout the network/organisation. Corporations are in a death spiral and they are not loved by people and big doesn’t function anymore. Maailma on muuttunut niin kovaksi, että nyt on etsittävä tosissaan pehmeitä vastakappaleita. Hiljainen viikkokaan ei ole enää hiljainen. Apuun tulee onneksi - pupulismi. Juuri nyt maailma kaipaa pehmeitä asioita. Kun jonnekin sattuu, siihen pehmeää. Kuhmun saanut kallo huutaa villasukkaa väärään päähän. Jos sattuu sisällekin, pää pitää työntää kokonaan äitin syliin. Ja jos oma kieli on niin terävä, että sillä satuttaa ulkopuolisiakin, siihen auttaa vain jonkun toisen pehmeä ja tunnelman taittava viisas sana. Näin pääsiäisviikolla maailma kaipaa - pupulismia. Pupulismi on yllättävän vähän käytettyä toimintaa. Kun ottaa huomioon, että sillä pyritään hyvään mieleen ja iloisempaan huomiseen. Pupulismilla kansaa kiihotetaan ostamaan liikaa herkkuja ja varaamaan aikaa läheisilleen. Taitava pupulisti saa puhuttua perheen isänkin pääsiäissunnuntaina kolmen vartin kävelylle, vaikka normiolosuhteissa tämä jäisi katsomaan väkivaltauutisia ja nyrkkitervehdyksiä. Pupulismissa käytetään iskulauseita, joilla tavoitellaan laajaa yhteisöllistä kevätmieltä. Nämä iskulauseet jäävät mieleen pörisemään. Ne pehmentävät oloa ja blokkaavat aivoista ulos ympäristölle haitallisia ajatuksia. Usein pupulistiset iskulauseet suunnataan aikuisille, koska he kuitenkin päättävät mihin pääsiäisenä mennään ja millä budjetilla. Pupulisti ei lakkaa toistelemasta: ”munarikasta pääsiäistä”, ”äiti vaatii töhnämunan” ja ”pashaa paketissa”. Niin kuin soidintanssissakin sulat ovat tärkeät pyrstössä, niin tässäkin on totta toinen puoli. Pitkiin pääsiäispyhiin moni onnistuu sovittamaan myös sen tärkeän sovituksen, hiljaisen viikon odotetuimman mykkäkoulun – temppuradan. Sitten ei vähään aikaan ruinata. Pupulismi esittää usein asiat uudenlaisina ja raikkaina, mutta pohjimmiltaan pupulismi on konservatiivista ja johtajakeskeistä. Mämmituokkonen ostetaan aina, vaikka se löytyisi aikojen saatossa yläritsiltä avaamattomana. Jeesusta käytetään mielessä, vaikka sitä ei ääneen lausutakaan. Äiti herää kolmantena päivänä tunteeseen, että kyllä tämä pupujuhla on sitten vuoden paras juhla! Mikä on pupulismin syvin olemus? Mikä tekee siitä juuri nyt ismeistä kaivatuimman? Pupulismissa on kyse ihmeestä. Siitä, miten kaikki on mahdollista, jos yhdessä uskomme siihen. Esimerkkinä tämä rusoposki, ristiturpa, pörheä rusakko – pääsiäispupu. Perinteisissä monisatavuotisissa tarinoissa tämä pupu ei pelkästään tuonut korissaan munia lapsille, vaan alkoi myös itse munia. Siis jänis. Vaikka se on nisäkäs! Siinä ollaan ihmeen äärellä. Pupusta tuli hedelmällisyyden symboli. Kaikki tietävät kuinka puput lisääntyvät tohinalla, mutta sen lisäksi ne pääsiäiskertomusten mukaan ehtivät vielä muniakin. Hautoa, ja riemastuttaa lapsia. Pupulismi tarjoaa siis lohdullisempaa maailmankuvaa. Aina syntyy uusia tänne. Toivottavasti meitä viisaampia, toisia ymmärtäviä, rauhaa rakastavia. Pääsiäinen on tietenkin pupulistien suosikkijuhla. Siinä on jotain aitoa valoa. Pääsiäisenä pupulisti iloitsee vilpittömästi, jos kansanjoukot pysyvät kotonaan ja ovat vain rauhassa. Pääsiäisenä ei tarvitse olla kännissäkään. Pupulismiin kuuluu syvä ymmärrys sanojen voimasta. Joskus ei tarvitse sanoa kuin: et olis Pupu aina noin pahalla tuulella. Jos ihme taas tapahtuu, Pupu tulee kainaloon. Maallikkosaarnaaja Maasola
