"I didn't realize how strong I was until, you know, I got into therapy and started to understand all the things that I've overcome." - Ron Jenkins Read the transcript of this episode here: https://app.swellai.com/t/tp_01JFJJKB7XP00HAV5P6H6ETQGJ EPISODE SUMMARY: In this episode of Unraveling Adoption, I had the privilege of speaking with Ron Jenkins, a remarkable individual whose journey through the complexities of foster care and adoption is both harrowing and inspiring. Ron's story begins with the tragic loss of his mother as a young child, leading him and his siblings into the foster care system. He was eventually adopted by a woman who, rather than providing a safe haven, exploited the system for drug money, resulting in a chaotic and violent environment. Ron candidly shares the trauma he experienced, including the loss of several brothers to violence and the pervasive fear that defined his childhood. Despite these challenges, he made a conscious decision to steer clear of gangs and drugs, ultimately finding a mentor who changed the trajectory of his life. This mentor not only provided guidance but also became a father figure, helping Ron navigate his way to a football scholarship at Fresno State University. Throughout our conversation, Ron emphasizes the importance of self-advocacy, therapy, and the need to break the cycle of trauma. He encourages listeners, especially men, to seek help and recognize that they deserve the same opportunities as anyone else. Ron's journey of healing and his commitment to helping at-risk youth through mentorship and advocacy work is truly inspiring. We also touched on the impact of sexual abuse in Ron's life and how it shaped his relationships. He highlights the importance of addressing these issues through therapy, which has been instrumental in his healing process. As we wrapped up, Ron shared exciting news about a movie being made about his life, and he invited anyone interested in supporting this project to reach out. This episode is a powerful reminder of resilience, the importance of community, and the potential for transformation, even in the face of overwhelming adversity. I hope Ron's story resonates with you and inspires you to seek help, advocate for yourself, and support others in their journeys. ===============

The best way to create lasting change in communities is to equip those intimately familiar with the pressing needs to lead the way. How local leaders can be supported and empowered to craft solutions. Guest's Bio As the founder and Executive Director of the Lobiko Initiative, Wilita Sanguma's career is a testament to his unwavering commitment to transforming the lives of people furthest from opportunity. His story began in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where his childhood was overshadowed by one of the deadliest conflicts since World War II. The harrowing experience of fleeing his homeland amidst chaos and violence instilled in him a profound understanding of the complexity of injustice and the importance of peace. This early exposure to conflict and his subsequent journey to safety laid the foundation for his later pursuits in political science at Fresno State University and a master's in International Studies at the University of San Francisco, where he specialized in peace and conflict resolution. Wilita's professional path reflects these early experiences and is marked by significant milestones. His personal trials have deeply influenced his work, especially his commitment to marginalized communities both in the U.S. and globally. His experiences of navigating systemic injustices and overcoming obstacles have fueled his passion for holistic education and youth development, reflected in his active participation on numerous nonprofit boards. Morelia Vieyra Santana is a 2023 National Proficiency Winner in the category of Equine Science. She is also a previous guest on the Off-Farm Income Podcast, appearing when she was a sophomore in high school in 2021. When I first interviewed Morelia, I was taken with how bold she was in her role at her families horse boarding, training and events business in Madera, California. Not only was she working steadily in the business, but she was taking ownership of more than her assigned role and suggesting changes that she believed would improve their operation. Knowing what I knew from our first meeting, it should have been no surprise to learn that she was a proficiency winner. It should have also been no surprise to learn that she no longer considered her role just as a member of her family and her families business. Today, she sees her role as representing her Mexican Heritage and that style of horsemanship as an ambassador to the greater agriculture community in the Central Valley of California. Morelia is attending Fresno State University and studying agriculture business. She plans on using what she learns in college to improve the business side of her families business. At the same time, she wants to spread Mexican Horse Dancing to an even wider group of people and audience. She sees it as her role to make this part of her heritage more pervasive and known to a much larger audience than it currently enjoys.

Should California adopt and recognize a Transgender History Month? Let's be clear about just how bad it is, and why. Most nations, like families with mortgages, can afford a considerable debt, but when it equals or exceeds the entire annual economy, as it has for the past few years, it has entered a danger zone. The Rolling Stones have unveiled their first album of original material since 2005, and the first since the death of drummer Charlie Watts. Hackney Diamonds will feature 12 tracks and be released on 20 October, preceded by lead single Angry. Community leaders, including Fresno mayor, Jerry Dyer, are pushing for Measure E. This initiative seeks to address significant shortages in key sectors and improve the deteriorating infrastructure of Fresno State University, facing a major maintenance backlog estimated at half a billion dollars. The upcoming COVID-19 booster is expected to be available in the United States as early as next week -- potentially as soon as Sept. 13 -- and is expected to protect against severe disease and death from currently circulating variants.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Lloyd loved the facilities there and the campus was gorgeous, but he needed some warmer weather and he found that by taking a visit to Fresno State University with Coach Spencer. Ever since last year, he's been enjoying every second of being a Bulldog! He loves his teammates and they have a lot of common interests which is something that they all enjoy. As author of The California Cybersecurity Workforce Development and Education Strategy (2020-2030): Framework and Recommendations for a California Cybersecurity Career Education Pipeline and Pathway Project (C3EP3) Report, Keith brings a wealth of research and insight regarding the state of cybersecurity workforce development and education. We discuss some of the greatest challenges facing cybersecurity workforce development, preparation, talent acquisition, and the value of employee retention strategies. These are important questions relating to national and economic security concerns of closing our ever growing cybersecurity workforce capability and job gap. More at http://philosophytalk.org/shows/how-relevant-jesus. Some people think Jesus was the son of God, though many who are skeptical about that still think he was a great moral teacher. But if we really knew what Jesus would think about moral issues that he didn't confront while he lived – abortion, terrorism, euthanasia, gay marriage or the destruction of old-growth redwoods – would it be that helpful? Would his moral vision have any implications for these issues? Ken and John discuss the moral philosophy of Jesus and its contemporary relevance with Andrew Fiala, Director of the Ethics Center at Fresno State University and author of "What Would Jesus Really Do? The Power and Limits of Jesus' Moral Teachings."

Initially postponed due to the pandemic, the season was ultimately cancelled on June 30.
