We've got Beacon regular IgnitedxSoul, aka Dylan, on the pod this week! The topic is Outpost Zero, a sci-fi horror set, but more specifically we're diving into some problem draft archetypes in the set. A nice mix of learning about the set and brainstorming ideas for designs! 253# Outpost Zero | The Bouvet Island mystery Bouvet Island, a small, remote island in the South Atlantic Ocean, has earned a mysterious reputation, partly due to its extreme isolation and unique status. Located about 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) from Antarctica, it is often referred to as the most remote island in the world. Its "disappearance" stems from historical cartographic confusion and the challenges of reaching it. Here's a closer look at the mystery behind Bouvet Island and its "disappearance":

I welcome Dan Nikolaides, CEO of Symmetric Games and the CTO of Studio369 on this episode. We begin discussing his current role leading development efforts on their game MetalCore, along with the studio's first game, Rune II. Learn about the concepts in MetalCore, how they found investors, and how he started in the industry. We then dive into switching over to game teams, having projects canceled, and leaving to join Phosphor. Hear about shipping a bunch of games, then starting his studio in 2016. Learn about not being intimidated by hard problems along with the importance of a growth mindset. We then talk about the importance of new engineers knowing a game engine, the preferred language behind it, and having a strong engineering foundation. Learn Dan's advice for current engineers who want to grow and have more responsibilities, along with the kind of work most working leads actually do. Hear about the importance of being a good listener, rubber ducking, and what kills a person's morale. We then discuss some of his favorite old projects, blockchain gaming, NFTs, and the Metaverse, and how different companies are approaching this space. Hear about the industry's challenge around content overload, Steam being dead for indies, and why it's better to partner with a console. We then pivot into VR, their VR game in development, and how it's a few years away from being a breakout platform. Towards the end we discuss working from home, game industry people, Dota 2, the struggles of starting a studio, how to contact Dan, and why now is the best time ever to be looking for a new job. Bio: Dan Nikolaides graduated from the University of Illinois in Computer Science, and has been in the gaming industry for over 15 years. Policing and the model minoirty myth are deconstructed through a noir genre lens in this hardboiled detective series created by today's guests, sak Pichetshote and Alexandre Tefenkgi. A new Image Comics series, The Good Asian stars detective Edison Hark—a haunted Chinese-American detective—on the trail of a killer in 1936 San Francisco's Chinatown. The series explores Chinese American identity, US immigration policy and the brutal contradictions inherent in being the first Chinese American cop when the target of his policing is inevitably his own community. It's also a beautifully drawn piece of historical fiction and an exciting mystery. My guests are: sak Pichetshote is a writer for comics and TV. He wrote the critically acclaimed horror comic hit INFIDEL that was featured on NPR's best horror stories of all time. In TV, he's written for the shows Marvel's Cloak & Dagger, Light as a Feather, and Two Sentence Horror Stories. Alexandre Tefenkgi is the acclaimed artist of European comics and graphic albums as well as the critically acclaimed Skybound book Outpost Zero by Sean McKeever. Born in Africa and raised in France, he's an artist of Vietnamese descent. The series' colorist is Lee Loughridge and letterer is Jeff Powell. In my defense, this one wasn't my fault. Y'all can't blame me this time! So Alex is back with tales of hosting a panel at Fanexpo, Chad and Jean-luc talk Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and then the three hit up your favorite comic books, like Middlewest, Batman, Snotgirl, Pretty Violent, Outpost Zero, Excellence, and more! I'd name the rest but I can't remember what they're called. The rest is the rest. I dunno. Peace and love

And then we do other stuff. Comics I guess. Batman, Outpost Zero, Star Wars, The Wild Storm, Middlewest, etc. The usual. Have fun or whatever.

Welcome to Issue 11 of Number One Comics Books. This week we are talking about the books Clankillers, Outpost Zero, Injustice Vs He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and Aphrodite V. Clankillers (Rod's Pick) from AFTERSHOCK COMICS written by Sean Lewis with art by Antonio Fuso Finola has a problem-her father is losing his mind. All the old king cares about is power...and Finola thinks power is stupid. Finola thinks her vicious older sisters are stupid. And then, we go for dad. Outpost Zero (Brian's Pick) from IMAGE COMICS written by Sean McKeever and art by Alexandre Tefenkgi Welcome to Outpost Zero, the smallest town in the universe. The people there work the land, go to the fights every Friday night, and tuck their children into bed-but the Outpost is no place for dreams or aspirations. To survive is ambitious enough. As Alea and her friends graduate to adulthood on a frozen world never meant to support human life, something stirs. Something sees... Injustice VS He-Man and the Masters of the Universe from DC COMICS written by Tim Seeley and art by Freddie E. Williams II Believing He-Man and the Masters of the Universe defeated, a robotic impostor has seized control of Eternia-but not for long! After freeing his kingdom from this strongman's rule, Prince Adam learns not everyone is pleased to see the pretender deposed-but Adam knows the value of freedom. So when heroes from another dimension ask his aid in deposing a super-hero turned dictator, he agrees. Teaming up with Batman against the Superman of the Injustice Universe, He-man and his new allies face dangerous and familiar enemies in a battle where no world is safe! Aphrodite V (Joe's Pick) from IMAGE COMICS written by Bryan Hill with art by Jeff Spokes In the near future, Los Angeles is a city on the brink of evolution, struggling with a new wave of terror fueled by black-market technology. Enter Aphrodite V: a fugitive from her masters, seeking individuality and purpose. She is the bleeding edge of biomechanics, and L.A.'s best hope against a new enemy-one that seeks to become a god among machines. One machine wants to destroy the city. Another has come to save it. Only one will survive.
