Nine years ago, Taylor McLemore penned a blog article about how we, as a startup community,  could do more to support veterans. The “germ of that idea” came from family members who had been in the military, and Taylor's resulting passion  to “serve those who served.” Taylor was surprised when a tweet directed at Davod Cohen, one of the co-founders of Techstars got a very direct response. “Cool idea. What do you think we should do?” That call to action set the Patriot Boot Camp in motion. We asked Taylor to step into the Spotlight on the VeteranCrowd Network. So today Taylor McLemore is a venture builder, scale operator, community connector, and investor. He currently serves as the Managing Director of the Techstars Workforce Development Accelerator in Denver. And Taylor is also the founder and a board director for Patriot Boot Camp, the spawn of his blog post, the nonprofit that supports military veteran and military spouse entrepreneurs. Patriot Boot Camp programs have worked with more than 1,000 military veteran and military spouse entrepreneurs to build technology companies of impact and scale. These companies have raised more than $110 million in venture capital and created more than 2,000 jobs. I met Taylor in Chapel Hill in 2015 when I attended Patriot Boot Camp as a speaker and mentor for the first time. Over the course of additional PBC events in places like Detroit and Austin, I watched this weekend seminar have a profound impact on veterans and military spouses starting all manner of businesses. And I also grew to appreciate Taylor's talent  and passion for the military community. In this episode we cover: Conviction is a more powerful motivator than capital gain. Entrepreneurs are made, not born. The power of a team aligned on the right mission. The impact of  COVID 19 and the tech answers coming from it. Mentor driven entrepreneurial models and much more. And we talk about the impact of the Patriot Boot Camp - learn more at the PBC Web Page Techstars Techstars is a  global platform for investment and innovation. Founded in 2006, Techstars began with three simple ideas—entrepreneurs create the future, collaboration drives innovation, and great ideas can come from anywhere. While at Able, he was a co-founder and investment lead for Codeable, a coding school in Latin America. Taylor serves on the Colorado Banking Board. Taylor's Bio Taylor is a venture builder, scale operator, community connector, and investor. He is the Managing Director of the Techstars Workforce Development Accelerator. He supports founders building companies that enable human potential through work, investing across edtech, labor market solutions, and the future of work. Taylor was appointed by Governor Jared Polis and confirmed by the Colorado State Senate as a Public Member of the Colorado Banking Board, serving the consumer protection mission of DORA for the $56Bn+ state banking system. Previously, he was Managing Director of Able, a venture and product studio.  Taylor was responsible for Able's new venture and investing practice and all finance, legal, operations, and human resources functions for three offices on two continents while the company achieved 15x+ growth. While at Able, he was a co-founder and investment lead for Codeable, a coding school in Latin America. Taylor is the Founder and a Board Director of Patriot Boot Camp, a nonprofit built in partnership with Techstars and Governor Jared Polis. Patriot Boot Camp programs have worked with more than 1,000 military veteran and military spouse entrepreneurs to build technology companies of impact and scale. These companies have raised more than $110 million in venture capital and created more than 2,000 jobs. Previously, Taylor co-founded and was CEO of Prediculous, a social gaming company that participated in the 2013 cohort of Techstars Boulder.  Prior to that, Taylor worked in investment banking assisting in the arrangement of more than $12 billion in financing for leveraged buyouts, acquisitions, and other corporate transactions. Taylor worked as a Vice President at Bank of America analyzing the more than $500 million of annual real estate occupancy expense for the Global Operations Council. Also while at Bank of America, he worked on the MBNA, Countrywide, and Merrill Lynch merger integrations.  Early in his career he was a venture capital analyst and hedge fund analyst. Which is quality over quantity. I feel like we live in a world dominated by quantity. If it's a digital world, we could spin that up to a million people, or 100 million people. I really am excited to focus on things where you can start with how do I drive quality. Quality of experience in what I'm building for one user or one client?  How do I think about how I'm spending my time instead of putting in a bunch of time and then am I thinking about the quality of it? Because in my experience, it's really hard to reverse engineer that after the fact. It's really hard to figure out quality after you've started. When you start with quality and you stay dedicated to quality. You can scale with quality. I've been thinking a lot about that. I would just share that idea for people to think about how it might apply to what they're doing in their lives and how they're investing their time. So hopefully that idea resonates. This is the third part of my series on military entrepreneurship.  Brandon Shelton is a strategy leader, a problem solver and a relationship builder. He led the grassroots effort that became Task Force X, a driven network of experts and advisors that evaluate talent and develop entrepreneurs and businesses. Patriot Boot Camp offers a series of programs under the Techstars banner that gives military veterans the tools and connections to launch a tech startup. Did you know that military vet entrepreneurs are twice as likely to be operating their businesses after five years of operation? And like all startups should know, only 10 percent actually stick around and go on to succeed. So why are military vets more likely to stay in business? Some of the biggest companies in the US were founded by military veterans like Nike, GoDaddy and FedEx. Vets have historically been successful at starting their own businesses, dating back to after WWII (where 50% of veterans-owned businesses), but vet entrepreneurship has been on a steady decline over the years, now with only 5.6% veteran-owned businesses in the US. This is because vets don’t have access to resources and supportive communities like they did after WWII. Today’s GI Bill doesn’t provide military and vets with access to low-interest loans to start businesses (like the GI Bill did during World War II). Patriot Boot Camp (PBC) is on a mission to turn these numbers around by empowering veterans to use the skills attained from operating in a high stress, demanding environments and translate them into successful business ideas of their own. PBC has already helped over 750 entrepreneurs start successful businesses, with alumni raising over $70M in capital and creating over 1,300 jobs during its six years of operation. Alumni accomplishments range from appearances on ABC’s Shark Tank, acceptance to top venture accelerators like TechStars and Y Combinator and seven successful alumni company acquisitions. Josh Carter, CEO of Patriot Boot Camo discusses the gaps in entrepreneurial support that military veterans often encounter and much more in today's tech podcast
