There are no such things as mistakes, only happy accidents. Other than my labeling it the wrong number, creating this episode was no hiccup. A technical issue kept me from editing this segment right away, so listeners are in luck. This has become a two-part episode, with Dave and I discussing leadership and mentorship and JB and I following up. I hope you enjoy both episodes. Rob Robinson and Dave discuss leadership and mentorship, drawing from an article about why soldiers leave the military. Rob, a retired Lieutenant Colonel, and Dave, a former Ranger, emphasize the critical role of leadership in retaining personnel. They highlight the importance of good leadership, mentorship, and leader development. Rob shares his experience with Sergeant's Time and combatives programs, while Dave recounts his mentor, Lester Cooper. They stress the need for leaders to trust and empower their subordinates, citing examples from Ranger School and commercial sectors. The conversation underscores the value of loyalty, trust, and continuous leadership development.Link to the Documenthttps://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1oj77XNX3m6FB30U_v5w650dMBHa6KQGeDisclaimer: The content of the "Philosophy From the Front Line" podcast is intended for informational and educational purposes only. Rob Robinson and JB discuss the limitations of "programs of record" in the U.S. Army, emphasizing the need for flexible and adaptive operations. They highlight the outdated caliber 50-machine gun, which has been used since 1918, and the inefficiencies of programs like the $63,000 Javelin missile versus the $1,000 M2220 recoilless round. They criticize the platform-centric mindset, citing the Stryker brigade's prolonged use and the failed Future Combat System. They advocate focusing on capabilities rather than specific platforms, suggesting AI and non-lethal capabilities could enhance military efficiency and adaptability.Disclaimer: The content of this podcast, "Philosophy from the Front Line," is intended for informational and educational purposes only. So we are revisiting the Book: Gods of War: The Legend of Blackhawk Company 1/23 InfantryGods Of War: The untold legendary story of the soldiers from Blackhawk Company 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment. A part of the Army's first Stryker Brigade 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division out of Fort Lewis Washington. This story follows the unit from Transformation through their Harrowing, Anxiety-filled Combat Deployment to the Northern Iraqi city of Mosul during the early stages of the War in Iraq. Blackhawk Company would hold down Western Mosul almost single-handed while battling head-to-head against a very determined enemy in some of the most fiercely fought battles of the entire war. Overcoming tragic events on their first combat mission that threatened to cripple the unit before they even got started, When the dust settled, Blackhawk Company would go down as one of the finest Infantry Rifle Companies of Modern Warfare—a story of Valor, Heroes, Brotherhood, and Destiny. Thanks again to Joe and Paul for coming on and sharing some insights before the book's release. We have another excellent veteran transition story to share just in time for the Fourth of July. Today's guest is Josey Huffman (https://www.linkedin.com/in/josey-huffman-cm-od/). He currently works for the Strategic Resiliency Group (https://www.srgadaptive.com/). We discuss his transition story and the moves and decision-making he used when transitioning from active duty into the reserves to AGR (Active Guard/Reserves) and then to his new opportunity. Josey is one of the many warriors I served with whom will be highlighted in SSG (R) Joe Troutman's book, which we discussed in Episode #77 (https://www.spreaker.com/episode/pffl-e-77-joe-troutman-blackhawk-company-1-23--58951819).I think this is a great conversation. For the listeners out there, it isn't easy to spend so much time away from those you served, but for those who know the comradery from serving, it was like we never left. It's hard to believe that it has been 20 years since my first deployment. In Honor of the Soldiers in BlackHawk Company 1-23IN out of Fort Lewis, I have compiled a collection of interviews from Mosul from 20034. My FSNCO SSG (R) Troutman is writing a book to detail the critical points of the deployment. You can find some of the info on (https://www.facebook.com/SSGTROUTMAN), and the book will be released on 4 August 2024.You can also hear more about Joe and his story in Episode #77 of this show. This is a much younger version of myself, but the danger of that day was very much real, and the soldiers around me rose to the occasion as they always did. I would like to publicly thank them and all veterans for their service to the nation and each other. 0:36 - CBS Interview ~5:25 - King 5 Interview ~17:15 - Fox 5 Interview Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/philosophy-from-the-front-line--4319845/support.

New Show today! Today, I have SSG(Retired) Joe Troutman on the show. Joe is a military veteran who has started writing a book to capture the History of Blackhawk Company 1-23rd Infantry as they transitioned away from a mechanized organization to become part of the First Stryker Bridge out of 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Washington. We talked about some of the experiences that we had leading up to the 20th Anniversary of our First Deployment and the 4th of August 2004. Joe's book should be out on Amazon this year by 4 August, but we are planning to talk again before the release of the book. Lots of links in this one but they will add some context to what we talked about during the show today. It's been 20 years since The Soldiers of Blackhawk Company 1st of The 23rd Infantry Regiment. This interview is with my former Driver Christopher Burritt. Burritt had the pleasure of driving B6 during our operational deployment in 2003-2004. Chris was one of the many heroes that I served with throughout my military service, and he has been working to launch his business. Part of the remaster is to bring attention to the previous shows that I shot during the pandemic and the audio was not the best, but also to provide you with a much better clearer version of the discussion. This is just a hint of who we were back then, and Blackhawk Company 1-23 was one of the formative years of my career and gave me a great understanding of what soldiers can do in the Army with some top cover and some initiative. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to lead in unit of distinction.Previous Show Description: Conversation with Christopher Burritt, former NCO from 1-23 Infantry. He now runs his own business American Twister Manufacturing. He mentioned Patriotic Online Marketplace, LLC www.pompUSA.org who assisted him in marketing his small business. I enjoyed this conversation and I hope you do as well. We had some audio issues, but I hope that you can hear it. He has been promoted since we last talked, but this is the transition story that he shared with us back in 2020. He is now the Head of Marketing Operations for USAA. Today, Rob, JB,, and Dave discussed the military paradigm of Speed as a security. Although this seems like a cliche understanding the principles of adequately implementing Planning and Leadership to increase operational velocity is one aspect of current and future success. We discussed the OODA Loop - Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act.Strategic Impact of Tactical Operations. We hope this provides some insights on accelerating and understanding the associated risks.
To make the show better, I am going back to season one of Philosophy From the FrontLine and remastering some of the episodes that didn't have the best audio for seasons 1-3. I think I hit my stride midway through season two, but in the effort to provide you with the best transition stories possible, I find it necessary to rerelease previous content after being significantly touched up and improved. Thanks for bearing with me as I worked on my audio and I can promise you that this episode will be a much better experience than the previously released version. Great Discussion! In this episode of "Philosophy from the Frontline" (Episode 73), Rob and Dave discuss the importance of understanding political issues and voting, particularly for military veterans. They emphasize that regardless of political affiliation, it's crucial to delve into the actual issues rather than voting based on superficial factors. They share personal experiences, recounting a period during their military career when they initially did not vote, believing it wouldn't make a difference. However, as they realized the impact of political decisions on the military, they began actively participating in elections. They highlight the significant changes observed during transitions between different presidents and urge service members to be informed voters, influencing their families as well.Show Notes: https://watchingamerica.com/WA/ - Aggregation Site of international news sources that show sentiment toward the US.https://www.realclearpolitics.com/ - Aggregation site of multiple sources of polling data. https://www.capitoltrades.com/ - Track the Trading activity of political leaders https://www.statista.com/statistics/1366899/percent-change-national-debt-president-us/ Growth of National Debt by the president. https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/haitiearthquake and https://capitalresearch.org/article/the-clinton-foundation-in-filthy-rich-politicians/?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAy9msBhD0ARIsANbk0A-kXBmRoRM-9Z1woLt4XGR-fm3gyonhXMw3UAAfCIw3Kq8viLvrZBAaArnqEALw_wcB - One example of how politician use their status to gain influence internationally.https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/constitution - Great Resource for understanding how our country is governed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=men-vp5jvzI - School House Rock, explains it all any other way is unconstitutional. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-wilkow-majority/id1549272753 - Great show not only discusses politics but provides all of his Research in the Wilkow Newsletterhttps://www.youtube.com/c/Forbes/videos - The live feed provides outstanding access to what is going on in government.

Today's guest is Clay Novak ( https://claynovak-author.com/) , he is the author of the book- Keep Moving, Keep Shooting. He was an awesome guest and here is a description of his book as well as the Non-profits he supports when he is not writing. Combat Veteran Terry Davis traded a life of adventure and violence for the quiet of the Midwest prairie. But when he catches wind of a potential terror threat to the country he swore to protect as a young man, his instincts make it impossible to stay on the sidelines. Dusting off his years of training and experience - and his guns - to protect himself, his loved ones, and his nation, the aging warrior winds up in Tampa, making friends and meeting enemies along the way. As the threat slowly takes shape and reveals itself, Terry relies on the smarts and skills that kept him alive through years of combat. Yet the threat is much bigger than he realized, and he's not sure who he can trust. The one thing he knows for sure is that if he wants to stay alive, he needs to Keep Moving, Keep Shooting.Clay supports the following causes with some of the proceeds from his book:https://ajlynchfoundation.org/ - The Lynch Foundation provides grants to organizations that provide direct assistance to United States Military veterans and their immediate family. This week Rob, Dale, and Dave talked about Ranger School. There is a lot of ground to cover, and we went a little longer than usual. I also must apologize because we had some connectivity issues at the end of the show and Dale's audio was cut off, but I can assure you what he said was incredibly profound. Either way we bring you 3 Generations of Ranger Qualified guys who also worked at the schoolhouse. The scary part of it is the course has changed, but it hasn't changed so much that this conversation will not be relevant to you. RLTW! Rob – 4th RTB '05-07, 6th ‘13- ‘15 Dale – Ranger Instructor - 5th RTB – ‘89-91 Dave – Ranger Instructor – 4th from – '05- ‘07 Five Principals of Patrolling PlanningReconnaissanceSecurity Control Common Sense – The fifth principle is the most important. Ranger School is the Army's toughest course and the premier small unit tactics and leadership school. The Ranger Course is a mentally and physically challenging school that develops functional skills directly related to units whose mission is to engage the enemy in close combat and direct-fire battle. For 62 days, Ranger students train to exhaustion, pushing the limits of their minds and bodies. The course incorporates three phases (Darby, Mountain, and Swamp) which follow the crawl, walk, run training methodology. In the Darby phase, the students become trained on squad operations and focus on ambush and recon missions, patrol base operations, and planning before moving on to platoon operations. In the Mountain phase, students develop their skills at the platoon level in order to refine and complete their training in the Swamp phase. After these three phases, Ranger Students are proficient in leading squad and platoon-dismounted operations around the clock in all climates and terrain. Rangers are better trained, more capable, more resilient, and better prepared to serve and lead Soldiers in their next duty position.https://www.moore.army.mil/Infantry/ARTB/Student-Information/Disclaimer - The material and information presented here is for general information purposes only.
