NHL – Red Wings aim for relevancy with moves in NHL free agency Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman just kick-started the franchise’s rebuild. Yzerman made bold moves when free agency opened Wednesday, generating a jolt of excitement for the once-proud franchise that it has not had since the former team captain was hired three-plus years ago. The Hockey Hall of Famer signed center Andrew Copp to a $28.1 million, five-year contract soon after the market opened. Yzerman also signed defenseman Ben Chiarot to a $19 million, four-year contract and a pair of wings to two-year deals. David Perron signed for $9.5 million and Dominik Kubalik for $5 million. NHL – Blackhawks make some minor free agent signings, nothing on Kane or Toews. The Chicago Blackhawks signed 4 players on the first day of NHL Free Agency. Three forwards signed deals, Max Domi and Andreas Athanasiou each signed for one season, and Colin Blackwell signed a tow year deal. Goalie Alex Stalock inked a one year deal. The news is still quiet on Patrick Kane and Jonathon Toews, who each have one year left on their current contracts, which are for $10.5 million for this season. NHL – Blue Jackets sign top NHL free-agent, "Johnny Hockey" The Columbus Blue Jackets landed the biggest prize on the opening day of NHL free agency by signing Johnny Gaudreau to a $68.25 million seven-year contract. The signing came a day after Johnny “Hockey” rejected an eight-year contract to stay in Calgary. Gaudreau’s signing highlighted a busy day. Claude Giroux is leaving Florida for a homecoming in Ottawa. The Washington Capitals landed Stanley Cup-winning goaltender Darcy Kuemper from Colorado. The New York Rangers signed forward Vincent Trocheck to a seven-year contract. In this episode we chat to 1999 Open Champion and Ryder Cup hero Paul Lawrie. He talks about growing up in the North East of Scotland dreaming of being a footballer. His change of path when turning pro at Banchory. Early tour memories, THAT Win at Carnoustie and the highs and lows of what followed. Ryder cup heroics and much much more!!
It was one of the most brutal Opens in recent memory but Paul Lawrie's brilliance in winning at Carnoustie in 1999 is all too often overlooked. The comical scenes of Jean van de Velde wading in the burn beside the 18th green dominate most people's memories of that event but that does Lawrie a disservice. To win, despite starting the final round 10 shots behind was rightfully the highlight of his career but there is much more to Paul Lawrie than his lone major triumph, as you'll hear in this revealing interview with John Huggan.
As we kick off a new Golf Season for 2022, change is afoot in Europe. The European Tour rebrands itself the DP World Tour, increasing prize money across the board for its players. The Ladies European Tour (LET) is fresh off of a thrilling Solheim Cup performance and appears to be in the ascendancy from years previous. Joining us is our special guest Richard Kaufman, the SkySports golf commentator covering both the DP World Tour and the LET. In this episode, we discuss the increasing money that is coming into Golf, and particularly the men's game from Saudi Arabia. Potential Ryder Cup captains are also a topic for discussion as Richard runs down his list of potential candidates for Captain of the European team, including Luke Donald, Paul Lawrie, Henrik Stenson, Lee Westwood and others. On the women's side, we look at the abundance of young talented players coming through the ranks in European golf with players such as Pia Babnik, Chiara Noja, and Lily May Humphries among others. There are some compelling story lines from other players such as Becky Brewerton and Julia Engstrom as they look to rebound from injuries to recapture their form and their status on the LET.
He's the major winner whose 4-iron for the ages brought him a Claret Jug, a key part of the European Ryder Cup team that pulled off the Miracle of Medinah, and a veteran of more than 600 tour appearances. What you may not know is that Paul Lawrie is also a golf club owner. His Paul Lawrie Golf Centre, in Aberdeen, boasts a 27-bay driving range and a 9-hole course that's recently held the Scottish Junior Par 3 Championship. Heavily involved in the grassroots game through his Foundation, and his work with Scottish Golf, where he is a strong advocate of OpenPlay and a mentor to the nation's elite men, Lawrie is well placed to look at the state of the game and what needs to be done to move it forward. Buckle up...
