MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Detroit Tigers 17, Minnesota Twins 14 Kansas City Royals 3, Chicago White Sox 2 – F/10 Innings Cincinnati Reds 8, Chicago Cubs 2 Tigers 17, Twins 14 – Lions-Vikings? Naw, Tigers top Twins by NFL-like 17-14 final Jeimer Candelario and Eric Haase each drove in three runs and the Detroit Tigers, despite giving up seven homers and not hitting any, outlasted the Minnesota Twins 17-14. Detroit led 10-0 in the fourth in an MLB game that wound with a score more fitting for an NFL matchup between the Lions and Vikings. After the Tigers scored eight times in the top of the fourth, Minnesota got six runs in the bottom half, highlighted by Ryan Jeffers' grand slam. Down 13-6, the Twins scored six more in the eighth on Miguel Sanó's second homer of the game and drives by Max Kepler, Brent Rooker and Jeffers. Haase's three-run double in the ninth gave the Tigers another cushion. Jorge Polanco hit a two-run homer in the Twins ninth. Royals 3, White Sox 2 – F/10 – Royals beat White Sox 3-2 on Taylor's 2-out single in 10th Michael A. Taylor's two-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning drove Hunter Dozier home from second base as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2. The Royals had tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth when Salvador Perez hit his 24th homer, a solo shot to left-center off AL saves leader Liam Hendriks. Scott Barlow, who took over in the 10th as the fifth Royals pitcher, struck out two and walked one. Ryan Burr pitched the final inning for Chicago. Reds 8, Cubs 2 – Votto extends power surge, Reds roll past Cubs 8-2 Joey Votto homered twice for the second consecutive day, going deep in his fifth straight game to match a Cincinnati record as the Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 8-2. Tyler Mahle tossed six scoreless innings for the Reds, who beefed up their bullpen again by acquiring right-hander Mychal Givens from Colorado before the game. Tyler Stephenson and Shogo Akiyama each had two RBIs, and Jesse Winker doubled twice and drove in a run. The 37-year-old Votto is the ninth hitter in Reds history, dating to 1900, to homer in five straight games. It was his 15th career multi-homer game. Today Chicago White Sox at Kansas City Royals, 2:10 p.m. Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs, 2:20 p.m. Baltimore Orioles at Detroit Tigers, 7:10 p.m.                  94.9 WSJM/103.7 Cosy-FM 6:50 NFL – Lions coach Dan Campbell was sleepless before 1st practice Dan Campbell was so fired up on the eve of his first practice with the Detroit Lions that he did not get any rest. Campbell says he didn't sleep at all, but said he has plenty of energy. The former New Orleans Saints assistant head coach was emotionally charged six-plus months ago when he was introduced as the new Lions coach after signing a six-year contract. He said the team would be tough, kicking teeth and biting kneecaps off in an eyebrow-raising news conference. Campbell was 5-7 as an interim coach with the Miami Dolphins in 2015. NFL – Bears see Eddie Goldman's return as defensive key The Chicago Bears want to increase the number of takeaways they force this year and improve both the pass rush and run defense, and they think the return of Eddie Goldman could help make this happen after their nose tackle returned to practice from a COVID-19 opt-out last year. NFL – Rodgers works out with Packers, then details his concerns Aaron Rodgers has returned from a tumultuous offseason of uncertainty eager to get the Green Bay Packers to the Super Bowl after falling a step short each of the last two years.  But nobody's making any promises regarding his future beyond 2021. The reigning MVP participated in the Packers' first training-camp workout Wednesday and made it clear in a news conference afterward that some of the issues that caused him to skip the team's organized team activities and mandatory minicamp remain unresolved.

Soto had two outs in the 10th before a walk and Kepler's ninth career game-ending hit. The deal was announced following their 6-5 win over Cincinnati and could signal more moves to come from Chicago. The Cubs received outfielder Greg Deichmann and right-hander Daniel Palencia. Oakland is in second place in the AL West and holds the league's second wild-card spot. The disappointing Cubs are fourth in the NL Central at 50-51 and could be a busy seller before Friday's trade deadline. Good Morning, RVA!
Good morning, RVA: 1,157↗️ • 11↘️; I think we have a mayor; and a two-hearted return

Good Morning, RVA!

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 5, 2020

Good morning, RVA! It’s 44 °F, and, if you can pull yourself away from refreshing election results websites, today looks like a pretty nice day to spend outside. Expect sunshine, highs in the 70s, and the beginnings of a pleasant stretch of weather running right through the weekend.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 1,157↗️ new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealth and 11↘️ new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 103↘️ new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 46, Henrico: 36, and Richmond: 21). Since this pandemic began, 438 people have died in the Richmond region. I decided to add a combined seven-day average line to my chart of the seven-day averages of new reported cases in Richmond, Henrico, and Chesterfield. I got tired of trying to add the numbers together in my head and then think about how that’d look over time. Anyway, as you can see, as a region we’re definitely experiencing a third peak of new reported cases. We’re probably doing more tests, which is good, but our percent positivity is slowly creeping up to that 5% threshold: Chesterfield, 5.8%; Henrico. 4.8%; and Richmond 3.4%. I said it early this week, but keep your eyes on the Mayor and the Governor for potential public-health policy changes as cases continue to rise and now that the (local) elections have wrapped up.Speaking of! We’ve had some progress on the results of our local elections. Mayor Levar Stoney has declared victory—here’s a concession-ish statement from Councilmember Gray that says “It has been the honor of my life to serve on city council for four years and the school board for eight years. I deeply appreciate the sacrifices of my family and my supporters during my mayoral campaign. All of us remain committed as citizens to making Richmond the fair, honest and inclusive city it needs to be.” and, as of yesterday, a statement from Alexsis Rodgers says “Waiting is hard, but our democracy is worth it. Richmonders deserve the confidence that every vote is counted in the mayor’s race. We have many outstanding votes and will await for the official results to be announced. While votes are still being counted, one thing is clear - Richmond is hungry for change.” All of that said, for all intents and purposes it sounds like we’ve got four more years with Mayor Stoney. With Gray’s defeat, this will be the first time in a long time that she doesn’t hold some sort of elected position in Richmond. As for the tight Council races—the 2nd, 3rd, and 8th—still too close to call. Kenya Hunter at the Richmond Times-Dispatch has updates on the school board results, with 2nd District rep Scott Barlow losing to Mariah White and the 6th District race too close to call. OK! I feel like we’re making progress on figuring out the political landscape for the next four years.I assume you’re all refreshing the same live blogs and Twitter accounts that I am, but, as of right now, the presidential election is also still too close to call. If I’ve got my electoral math right, Biden needs to hold Arizona and win one of: Georgia, North Carolina, Nevada, or Pennsylvania. The margin in Arizona continue to tighten, and a magamob gathered outside and chanted as election officials worked to count mail-in ballots—not as bad as the “stop the count” chants heard in Michigan yesterday. Georgia, with ballots outstanding in areas that lean towards democrats (but do they lean hard enough??), is a statistical tie. Nevada, where Biden leads by the tiniest amount, is sloooooowly counting their remaining ballots. And while Trump leads in Pennsylvania, the outstanding ballots have been massively in favor of Biden. We can all shift our anxiety over to the next thing if: Biden holds Arizona and wins any other state, or if he wins Pennsylvania. Counting should resume in some of these spots around 9:00 AM.After a bunch of years Bell’s Brewery will once again distribute their beer—including Bell’s Two Hearted Ale—in the Richmond region. Alcohol distribution in Virginia is a whole weird thing, and Bell’s had beef with their previous distributor, Loveland. Moving forward, they’ll use Specialty Beverage as their distributor, so I guess they got their legal issues sorted, which is great for beer-drinkers like me.Richard Hayes at RVAHub has a set of charming photos from Maymont Glow(which only runs through November 8th, so you’re running out of time if its been on your todo list). This morning, the Richmond and Henrico Health Districts will host a free COVID-19 testing event at the RRHA Senior Building (1611 4th Avenue) from 9:00–11:00 AM. Including Amy Barrett, the party has picked six of the last 10 justices although it has lost the popular vote in six of the last seven presidential elections, and during this period represented a majority of Americans in the Senate only between 1997 and 1998 (if you count half of each state’s population for each senator). That’s a dangerous proposition for our constitutional order. The court can hold its conservative impulses in check with an eye to the future. Or it can ramp up a power struggle with the other branches that in the end — Marbury or no Marbury — it is destined to lose.If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 70 °F, and yesterday’s cooler temperatures continue right on in through today. That chance of rain also continues, so keep an eye to the sky for most of the day. Tomorrow, the 90-degree heat returns.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 847↗️ new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealthand 11↗️ new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 113↗️ new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 19, Henrico: 76, and Richmond: 18). Since this pandemic began, 321 people have died in the Richmond region. VCU did, after taking a couple of days off, update its data dashboard last night, and I had a heckuva time figuring out just what was going on. The University’s primary piece of data—or at least the first one on their dashboard—seems to be active cases. This, I think, is different from new cases or total cases, and can presumably go down over time as people recover from COVID-19. I don’t think we have anything like that at the state or locality level, so keep that in mind. At the moment, VCU reports 17 new positive coronavirus cases, 104 active cases, 159 total cases, and 137 people in isolation or quarantine. That’s a lot of numbers without much context! To help with that, I’ll get you a graph or two later this week once I feel like VCU has settled a bit more on which data they report and when.Sort of corona-related, I stumbled across this neat map of Virginia’s Return to School Instructional Schedules for Fall 2020 on the Virginia Department of Education’s website. Out of 132 school divisions across the Commonwealth, 68 will head into the first day of school fully remote, just 10 (including Hanover) will meet in person, and the rest will use some sort of hybrid approach. Two things that stand out to me from this map: 1) There is definitely some geographical unity going on here with almost the entire Shenandoah Valley opting for partial in-person while almost all of the localities east of I-95 choosing to go fully remote, and 2) Some of the independent cities embedded within those western localities have picked a closer-to-remote option than their surrounding county. It’s not strictly an urban vs. rural situation, but some of that is certainly going on. Now, the bigger question is how will these different reopening decisions impact the spread of the virus in these different localities?A couple weeks ago (I think?), I mentioned that the City had asked the Richmond School Board for permission to use a couple school buildings as emergency daycare sites as we head into various kinds of reopenings. Kenya Hunter at the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that last night the School Board voted to do just that (6–0 in favor, with Kenya Gibson and Scott Barlow abstaining, and Linda Owens absent). Hunter also has a few of the program’s details, including the list of school buildings that will participate and that “two thirds of the school-based slot [will] be made available for free to categorically eligible families.” I’m not quite sure what that last bit means, but the Mayor says he’ll have more information to share over the next few days. The Virginia Mercury’s Ned Oliver says that Del. Jeff Bourne’s bill on qualified immunity died in the Democratically-controlled General Assembly. I’ll quote this bit from Oliver: “Two Democrats on the House Appropriations Committee, Dels. David Bulova of Fairfax and David Reid of Loudoun, joined Republicans in opposing the legislation. Neither spoke about the legislation during the meeting and did not respond to emails seeking comment Monday afternoon.”Gregory J. Gilligan at the RTD says the new Trader Joe’s over in Bon Air will open sometime in October. This is the first bit of grocery store news I’ve heard in a while, and that must have been hard for a lot of folks because I know how much Richmonders are deeply bananas about grocery stores. I’ve complained that the new location is hard to get to by foot, bike, or bus—and that’s still true! It is, however, easier to get to than the Short Pump location, and I wonder if TJ’s will soon start to show up in the grocery deliver apps?Dang, Mike Platania at Richmond BizSense says Metro Bar & Grill in the Fan has closed for good. I hope someone is keeping a list of all the restaurants that have closed (and opened!) up shop as a result of the coronavirus. I don’t know what I’d do with that dataset, but I bet it’d be fascinating/sad to look through in a couple of years.Just a quick reminder: The application for the Richmond Recovers small-business / small-organization grant program goes live today over on the RVA Strong website./r/rva has put together a definitive rankingof all the Nightengale ice cream sandwich flavors. This is important news and you should take the time to read it. I just learned that Nightengale offered a ice cream sandwich delivery service earlier this summer?? Sure you had to order 12 or more sandwiches, but, like, is that even enough ice cream sandwiches? This morning’s patron longreadTikTok and the Evolution of Digital BlackfaceSubmitted by Patron Casey. I think a lot about digital blackface, especially when it comes to which gifs we choose to express ourselves both in public and in private.Over a period of two months, I heard from 29 Black creators who shared stories about muted posts, in-app harassment, and incidents of racism. They said the problems on the app are deeper and more widespread than simple isolated incidents. “Ever since I joined I’ve felt like the app is against me,” one told me. Another added, “It’s disgusting how much they have allowed to go unchecked.” Together, their experiences belie the perception of TikTok as an app of joy and creativity, revealing instead a place tangled up in an ancient pain—a site of blurred visions and youthful ignorances, where flattery quickly turns into mockery, mockery into theft, and theft into something altogether more disturbing. If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.

How To Start Living Your Best Life By Tapping Into Your Strengths

Lead Through Strengths

To Live Your Best Life, Know Your Intention And Be Clear With What You Want  Lisa: What about the conflicts you have in your head as well, so they're not just with others? You know, you fight your own things that you wish you would do, maybe when you're not aligned with the personal leadership you want to demonstrate, or the life you say you want to live, but then you think — I have big bills, or I have practical things, or I need to get this deliverable done.  So I'm just going to work 14 hours a day, just as an interval, I'm just gonna do it for a couple of weeks.  But then it becomes your life.  So when you battle, that sort of thing, you're facing burnout, and really, you're battling you and the baggage that you bring with you roll after roll after roll, it's the same stuff.  What do you do to get inside of your head and let your strengths out in those situations? Strother: It's back to that planning piece.  Again, knowing the intention and being super clear. I think a lot of the times we have these visions of what we want our job to be like or our life to be like, but we're not crystal clear. It's a hazy, blurry... something like that. And we hesitate to be very specific because life is dynamic and things change all the time.  What if you suddenly have a kid? OR, What if there's a giant divorce? OR, What if there's something that changes?  So we don't want to put something down. We don't want to plant a flag in the ground and say, that's where I'm going. Because it could change.  It's actually really valuable to plant flags, even if you're going to uproot them later and move the goalposts because it gives you something to go towards. It gives you a filter.  I love the metaphor of filters in our lives. And again, from a non-emotional place putting these filters in so anytime you have a choice to make, anytime you run into a problem where you keep doing the same thing, you pour it into the top and you let it run through all the filters.  It has to meet this requirement. It'd be really nice if it met this requirement. This is the very specific thing that I definitely want to go towards.  And once you let everything sort of filter through you go —  “Does this serve it or not?” And hopefully those filters will be able to knock out any behaviors that aren't serving that longer goal or that larger goal. But if you're unclear in where you want to go, then every time you make a new decision has to be a completely new process.  So being really clear what you want and where you're going helps you when those types of conflicts come up. Got Goals That Are At Odds With Each Other? Renegotiate Rules And Discover New Options Lisa: So now if I get really tough with it, here's a situation that this is the kind of thing that people come up to me after the event. And I'm sure they do this to you too. Strother: Yeah, I love it. But... Lisa: Like, “Yeah, okay, I have a clear vision of the ideal life. Here's that flag you told me about it. And I think I know what that flag is. I want to have this role. And in five years, I think I could have that role. I could get the promotion. I could go start that company. I could do that thing.  Let's say it's a specific promotion, specific role they want. And they believe that in order to get it, it also requires a certain level of workaholism or some other things that would then go against maybe a family value that they say they have as well. And these two things seem at odds with each other and they're like, “I want this but I don't want to leave behind my family or these other things?”  How do I figure out how to prioritize or what to do with that when my goals almost seem at odds with each other? Strother: No, I feel like it's the real question because that's the hard piece. It's so wonderful in the sort of concept where we're like — “Oh, we'll just leverage your strengths and everything's just gonna shake out great.”  But then you bought up against that. And I think that the first piece in unpacking that is, one of the phrases that I use all the time is —  “Have you set up an unwinnable game for yourself?”  And I think that helps people see, like, if you're saying,  “Well, this is the outcome that I desire, and also this, this and this are in place…” Well, you've set up an unwinnable game, there's no-win scenario for you in this because you're already setting up.  I will be unhappy in some areas, whether it's usually the workaholic side of things. I'll just spend tons and tons of time here and fall on that sword.  And I think that when you've set up an unwinnable game, it's time to just renegotiate the rules of it. And I think when you have it, the challenge here is that —. this is the thing I hate about personal development, I bet you've found this too — personal development always kind of defaults back to that feeling of like,  “Be big, but not too big, small, but not too small. Do this…”  But it's never a clear “this is how this works every time.”  And we all want that. We want that clarity. But when it comes to this type of piece, when you're in that unwinnable game, oftentimes you have that clear picture, you also have preordained the path, and you have a hard time letting go of what you see as the way to get there.  And there may be all sorts of different offshoots. And if you do have these tension points, there's both the ability to triage like,  “Is one slightly more important?” “Is there a lean here that I can lean into so I won’t default to this most of the time” “And if not, how can I restructure the entirety of the concept of what I'm doing to make it work? What would I need to do to do that?” “Does that mean I have to change an hourly rate? Do I need to get a new skill? Do I need to pick up something, bring in some type of support structure, someone who takes care of the house while I'm doing this thing?” There are always options. And a lot of times they feel like they're inaccessible for one reason or another. But it's usually because we're holding on too tightly to the first vision of how it should go. And anytime you, or I was….. the phrase I love is, “should-ing all over yourself.”  Like if you feel like you should do something that's a red flag for me as a coach to look and be like,  “So why should you do that? What's going on there?” And there's usually a way that you haven't thought of that you can pivot and try something new. The ‘This Or That’ Dilemma Vs. Embracing Life’s Gray Areas Lisa: Yeah, there's another thing that you do as a coach that I think is so good, which is about making things mutually exclusive — where if I've already decided that if I want this path, it has to be like this. And if I have this, I can't have that.  And then you lock yourself into it's “this or that,” right? And there's I don't know why humans do this, but we're so drawn to “this or that” kind of thinking and you are so good at catching people on that. This is not mutually exclusive, of that. They could actually live... Strother: ….exist together. Yeah,. We live in that... we crave... let's back to that. Don't tell me “do a little bit of this and a little bit of that.”  We want a clear boundary. We live in a binary mindset. And it's really actually difficult for us to move into that shades of gray, because our brains naturally crave,  “Well, pick one!” “Which one?”  “That one.” And then the tension ramps up and we get emotional about them. We're like -   “That one!”  It's like “you have to turn this off!” And so I think that, the more you can just acknowledge the duality of the world, and that things are constantly, a friend of mine did say that he was talking to me, he said:  “Life is just so dynamic.”  And I'd never….. It was almost a sad… He was like, “He’s just so dynamic right now.”  And I was like —  Lisa: “That should be good!”  Strother: I was like, “that's a brilliant way to put that though.” Like when life is challenging and things are unclear and there is all of this gray area in your life. It's just your life is being really dynamic right now.  And that's sometimes hard to be with, but it also usually has the highest payoff, is that you can live in that dynamic place for a little while. You usually create some type of result that's so much better than “this or that." Which would you like? You're going to get something that encompasses all of your wants and all of your desires and all of your intentions, as opposed to...  “Well, I pick that one. That one is good.” Your Best Life Starts Where You Align With The Best Version Of Yourself Lisa: This is one of my favorite things that Strother brings to coaching to StrengthsFinder events. He is always catching people in a moment where they get into “this or that” mode, where, if this then not that, and we get into this mutually exclusive kind of thing in our head, and we do it around lots of scenarios.  “Oh, if I pick this role, well, I'm not living that passion.”  Or, “If I change course this way, that I'm not going to have that thing.”  And we try to narrow it down and simplify it so much that we actually get stuck very often. And Strother is so good at helping people become unstuck and helping people see that you can take small steps in many directions, to really feel like you are aligned with the best version of you and those small actions over time add up and add up and add up. And one day you look up. If you're setting the intention to do this over time, and you notice a year later, “Wow, I feel really good. I'm living a good life.”  Want To Further These Conversations? Consider Strother To Your Strengths Events  So, just to give another shout out to Strother for doing this episode, I really appreciate you Strother if you're listening, that you bring this conversation to me, to our clients, and to the concept of StrengthsFinder, because it really is one where people wrap themselves around the axle about it. So if you are a listener, who has been in that mode with yourself where you're like, “Oh, I don't really know what my passion is,” or “I made the wrong choice when I started my career,” give yourself some grace. Apply some of the things that Strother mentioned in this episode about stepping into who you are in those smaller ways.  With that, thanks for listening to Lead Through Strengths. Good morning, RVA! It’s 62 °F, and “cooler with a chance of rain” is the forecast for the next eight days. So, enjoy the reprieve from the heat, and keep an eye on the radar for opportunities to sneak outside while staying dry.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 637 new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealth and 5 new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 86 new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 31, Henrico: 30, and Richmond: 25). Since this pandemic began, 204 people have died in the Richmond region. I don’t have much to add to today’s coronanumbers, but I did enjoy this piece from the Washington Post about five coronametrics we should be tracking instead of all the stuff in my spreadsheet: Number of unlinked infections, speed of isolating infected people, proportion of cases arising among quarantined contacts, number of health-care worker infections, and trend in excess mortality. I don’t think I’ve seen public sources for any of those metrics, but, as always, I’d love to add a few more columns to my spreadsheet.Yesterday marked the 17th day of consecutive protests for police and social justice reform in Richmond. First, that’s amazing. Second, it’s shocking how the police response to people protesting police violence continues to be…violent. With every single person filming and broadcasting each and every interaction with police—and the entire world watching—still our local police department reacts with unnecessary and dangerous violence. It’s happening across America, and every morning, as we scroll through our feeds, we see incontrovertible video proof that policing in our country is deeply, systemically broken. On Saturday here in Richmond, we watched as members of our own police department used their vehicle as a weapon against protestors. You can read a first-hand account of the incidentfrom the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Ali Rockett who was standing nearby at the time. Then, last night, folks showed up at the police headquarters on Grace Street to specifically protest the violence used against the previous night’s protest. RPD responded with more pepper spray and more tear gas. This video of a police officer indiscriminately spraying pepper spray over the crowd and this video of police clearing a parking lot with tear gas after most of the crowd had dissipated are particular infuriating. You can read @socialistdogmom’s long thread and this piece in the Commonwealth Times for first-hand accounts of the evening. After Saturday night, Mayor Stoney said he’s asked the Commonwealth’s Attorney to investigate the incident involving the police officer hitting people with their car and has “instructed the Richmond Police Department to place the officer involved on administrative leave pending the result of the investigation by the Commonwealth’s Attorney.” Sure that’s a step to take, but it’s a step taken to address an individual problem. It is abundantly clear that the problem with the Richmond Police Department is systemic. The Mayor needs to start announcing systemic policy and budget proposals to address the systemic issues with policing in Richmond. As @Morr_Ruth said on Twitter last night, “When all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. We HAVE MORE TOOLS THAN POLICE.” Our legislation and our budget should start reflecting that.Related, Kenya Hunter at the RTD says that tonight the Richmond School Board will discuss dissolving the agreement the district has with the Richmond Police Department to provide School Resource Officers (SROs) to some schools. School Board member Scott Barlow called for the discussion after police shot rubber bullets at him (!?) during the first couple nights of protests. These quotes from Barlow sound like a person working through some things and feel authentic: “‘While I was watching and recording some of the protests … well away from those who were violently demonstrating, the police turned their lights at us and began firing rubber bullets at us followed by a canister of tear gas…Perhaps this is a manifestation of the privilege in my life, but I was embarrassed. I thought I had done something wrong by being at the protest at all. At the time, I was only armed with a cellphone camera.’ He said that with a realization that he lives with privilege as a white man with a law degree, it should come as no surprise that if the police will target him, they will target young black people as well.” Quick note about SROs: They’re paid for by the police. That’s different than School Security Officers (SSOs) which are paid for by RPS. Theoretically, to quote from the MOU between schools and police, “SROs are not to be involved in routine disciplinary actions that are not violations of the law.” Getting rid of SROs is a perfect example of what defunding the police looks like. What could the money spent on putting police officers in schools be spent on instead? What services and programs do our schools need to keep kids safe that don’t involve the police and are potentially more effective?Today at their regularly scheduled meeting, the Planning Commission will consider a couple of ordinances to rezone the areas around the Science Museum, Allison Street, and VCU/VUU Pulse Stations (the main ordinance is ORD. 2020–103). This rezoning will, generally, provide for more density next to our best, most-frequent transit and is in accordance with the Pulse Corridor Plan that was adopted into the City’s Master Plan three years ago. You can flip through the easy-to-read summary of the rezoning here (PDF). Check out page 11 for which areas will be rezoned (mostly north of Broad and west of Lombardy) and page 17 to see how nice and cohesive the future zoning map will look once the rezoning is approved. I feel bad about not having written more about this earlier so y’all could get involved sooner. However! Assuming this passes Planning Commission today, we should all prepare ourselves to send supportive emails to our City Council reps in the next week or so.I love this Confederate monument bingo card designed by Instagram user @world_destroyer. For a hot second, you could get physical versions through @richmondprotestpress, which has a bunch of cool protest poster designs as well.Tonight’s Richmond 300 virtual summit should be a good one as they’re focusing on Downtown and specifically the area around the Coliseum. Make sure you register ahead of time so you get sent the link for the meeting! This morning’s longreadPolice Reform Is Necessary. But How Do We Do It?Given the above, this is a good longread for today.Since 2013, the Black Lives Matter movement has made police violence a pressing national and local issue and helped lead to the election of officials — including the district attorneys in several major metropolitan areas — who have tried to make the police more accountable for misconduct and sought to decrease incarceration. The killing of George Floyd in police custody shows how far the country has to go; the resulting protests have pushed the Minneapolis City Council to take the previously unthinkable step of pledging to dismantle its Police Department. But what does that mean, and what should other cities do? We brought together five experts and organizers to talk about how to change policing in America in the context of broader concerns about systemic racism and inequality. If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.

We had a question from a listener who wanted to know how to ask for a pay raise. Truth is, I had never asked for a pay raise.  I had some ideas, but perhaps my advice wasn't as solid as it could be. So we found an expert and asked him to join us on this episode of Creating Disney Magic.  Scott Barlow, founder of Happen to Your Career, explains exactly how to ask for a pay raise.  If you perform your job well, you are doing what you have been asked to do. But doing what you have been asked to do is the minimum standard.  There are 3 times you can get raises; as you are changing roles, when your performance has justified a pay raise when you accept a job Scott Barlow gives us the four steps to asking for a pay raise.  Often, supervisors and their direct reports are not on the same page on what top priorities are.  If you want your supervisor to know what value you are bringing to the organization, you have to let them know.  If you want to make more money, you have to be better than everyone else. Have a better performance. Have a better attitude. Have better results.

German Bundesliga club Freiburg have signed Australian Brandon Borrello from lower-league Kaiserslautern for an undisclosed fee. Borrello, 22, is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a cruciate ligament tear. Borrello scored three goals in 20 games last season as Kaiserslautern were relegated to the German third division. The location of this year's FFA Cup final will be determined through a live draw, with the decision taken out of the hands of FFA. Previously, the FFA has had the final say on where the knockout tournament's deciding match would be played, basing their decisions on a range of factors including finances and broadcaster demands. It has often led to controversy, with Sydney FC chairman Scott Barlow accusing the governing body of putting "profit" ahead of fairness by handing the 2016 FFA Cup final hosting rights to Melbourne City.

How To Hire and Get a Sales Job with Gregg Salkovitch #217 When it comes to the process of staffing a sales position, it’s two sides of the same coin. On one side we have the need for employers to hire skilled and competitive staff. On the other side of the coin is the need for talented employees to get hired by great companies. Both sides are looking for the perfect match according to our guest Gregg Salkovitch. Greg is a recruiter and founder of  Right Choice Resources. In this episode we discuss how to get a sales job and how to hire an outstanding sales professional. The State of Sales in Spring 2018 For sales professionals, 2018 is a sellers market (no pun intended). The market is hot!  Great time to get a job. Companies have a lot of competition when finding candidates. There are few great candidates available. Many sales professionals are super happy where they’re at. It takes a lot to motivate them to move. How Candidates Earn a Sales Job Gregg has the following advice for candidates: Hiring is a sale. Treat it like a sales call. For example, he had a candidate do a video conference in a T shirt. Don’t! Too many candidates don’t qualify, don’t follow up, don’t ask for the sale. You’re the product and no one knows it better than you. Do your research. Dress well. Remove and trim your facial hair. Don’t show up late. Be early, stop at Starbucks for a coffee nearby your appointment. Customize Your Questions Show your prospective employer you’ve done your homework. Ask….. I looked at your LinkedIn and see you’re successful.. what do you attribute it to? I saw you on YouTube and noticed I was looking at your competitor and noticed this… and have some thoughts Good candidates can’t be quieted down. They keep the conversation rolling. Go straight to the decision makers. LinkedIn is the key. Don’t waste time filling out entry forms on a website. Get creative. How to Ask for a Sales Job As the interview winds down ask the following: I really appreciate the opportunity to meet and I’m extremely interested in this role. Do you have any reservations that would prevent me from moving forward? This gives the interviewer a prompt to voice objections. This gives the candidate an opportunity to turn the issue around. It may not have been covered earlier. How Managers Hire for a Sales Job Hiring managers need to recognize the market is tough Not a lot of “A” people Recognize it’s not a one way street. Not all candidates want to work for you It’s a date, it has to work in both directions It’s a matchmaking process Don’t see this one sided Managers over focus on the sellers rolodex Look outside your industry Search a larger pool of candidates than you think Don’t overly focus on the Resume. Be skeptical. Don’t trust a website will screen Compensation $40K base salary $125K base salary on high end Typically 50/50 split e.g 460K base and $60K if you hit your targets Junior $50K, with very little commissions, and transition to Always ask, “Based off your current team how many have made that the first year?” How To Find Greg Salkovitch Right Choice Resources gregg@rightchoiceresources.com http://www.linkedin.com/in/greggsalkovitch   Sales Hiring Process Here are past episodes on hiring and interviewing for a sales job! Today marks the 200th episode of the Happen to Your Career podcast.   Can you believe it? (We hardly can!)   Scott started the podcast 4 years ago, back when he was also working in a corporate job that he liked well enough...but wasn’t his dream.   He had a WAY bigger vision for what he wanted to create in his life, and how he wanted to help people.   So when you’ve heard him talk about how to transition and optimize your life from good to great on this podcast each week for the past four years(!), he’s not just spewing some BS he read that morning on a career site. He’s lived it.   And, so have the people whose lives he’s touched.   (Maybe you’re one of them?)   Josh and I rounded up some of the people who have been an important part of HTYC back from the very beginning (people like Scott’s wife Alyssa, their kiddos MacKenzie, Camden, and Grayson, and HTYC co-founder Mark Sieverkropp).   Then I grabbed some of the people whose lives have changed because of HTYC, including past coaching clients and team members like Erica, Mike, Tracey, Josh, Kirby, and Jacqui.   I asked them each three simple questions:   Where was your life before you encountered Scott? What impact did Scott and HTYC have on your life? What's different about your future because of HTYC?   And their answers Blew. Us. All. Away. So Josh and I wanted to share them with you.   If you’ve been curious about what it’s like to get to know Scott personally -- or to get to work with him -- this episode is a must listen.

Business Coaching with Join Up Dots

Jobs are made, Jobs are given, But the best Jobs dont come easy. My guest on todays episode of the Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who like a select band of guests have decided to return again and join up more dots. Yes, back on episode 37 of Join Up Dots, when the show was just a baby, and I was finding my feet, he came on the show with his business partner of the time Mark Sieverkropp. They were building the online career advice platform Happen To Your Career, and in that discussion spoke about the hustle, early mornings, and desire that it takes to bootstrap something and take it out to the world. Happen To Your Career, is a place that is built with the owners desire, and passions being its ideal avatar. You can see that the concept would have been something that our guest would have been looking for, so he created it himself. As he says “I have always had an unusual outlook on careers. My wife Alyssa, who I met in high school, knows this to be true. I have left what others considered “good jobs” turned down job offers other people would love and any time I have wanted to make more income have simply figured out a plan and acted upon it. I have to be doing something I am excited about to be happy. Having had 8 positions in the last 10 years (including successfully self employed) has caused me to have many experiences in a short period of time.” I have owned a successful business in contracting, led others as a people and human resources professional, coached business owners and leaders to success, and helped many people develop their careers along the way. I have worked a variety of industries including: manufacturing, retail, government, food, construction and more. Everywhere I went I saw people struggling to figure out what they want to do and how to get there.” So has he got there himself. Is the platform he created truly what he wants, or is it still work in development? Like most things created by a desire to help the world will it ever be truly realised? Well lets find, as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Mr Scott Barlow. Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with Scott such as: How he would love to spend sometime with Tony Hsieh, and is inspired by the big dreams and big actions that he demonstrates everyday. How difficult it is to start a business with your wife, even though you can pay them less than anyone else you could meet. Why the world is fascinated with the huge success of others and care little about the twenty years of struggle that have led to that point. And lastly…. How he recalls the struggles he had as a young man, that caused him to tackle them head-on to allow a starting point to his dreams.

This Episode's QuestionIngrid says she's pretty close to knowing what she wants to do with her career. And she even has a list of potential employers collected. These are companies where she could put these new ideas to use. Yet she's just not sure of the timing.  She's afraid once she actually gets into the career change...will she still be happy? Will she have picked the right thing? She asked, "Is it okay to go after what I think (at least right now) my dream job is...simply because I need to have the experience of it to know what it is all about? Or do I need to know exactly what my dream job is before I go after it."   What You'll Learn In The Audio - Whether to take the risk of the grass not being greener in a new job. Sometimes you worry that you might be romanticizing the role or the company. Or you worry that the interview process is not what the "real" day-in-a-life will be like. - How you can Happen To Your Career rather than slugging through your work days by letting career "happenings" get imposed upon you. This guy rocks. - Examples of times when a dream job didn't turn out as planned. Yup, even your hosts have experienced these "wrong" turns and came out on a great note. And why you should go for it...even if it turns out to be one of your "not it" roles you're bound to experience in your career. - Why it's good to go through some career conflict and get outside of your comfort zone. You'll become more self-aware, you'll know better what your strengths are, and you'll get clearer on what you want. - If you don't try it, you'll miss the chance of knowing whether this is "it" for you. And why not? Because what you want and need today won't be what you want and need in the future. You'll keep changing, growing, and evolving as a person. So go for what feels right today because it will change tomorrow. - Humans are wired with a survival instinct. You'll tackle pain head on. It's your fight or flight response. You'll take risks to avoid pain. Yet when it comes to gain, humans take far less risk. That's why Ingrid's feelings and question are 100% normal. To get massive career happiness, sometimes you have to take risk on the gain side. And it's a lot tougher to muster up the courage on that end.   Resource of the EpisodeAt Happen To Your Career, you can find a  14 day course on how to figure out what you want to do with your career.  There's no charge. Find Your Dream Job: Insider Tips for Finding Work, Advancing your Career, and Loving Your Job

Do you know what is going to make you happy and fulfilled in your next role? On today’s bonus episode of Find Your Dream Job, Scott Barlow, Founder of Happen to Your Career and host of the Happen to Your Career Podcast, identifies the four key traits that lead to career happiness. Scott also illustrates how clarity in these areas builds a framework for a successful job search. The 4 Key Traits you must have to find happiness and fulfillment in your job are: Helping people — Most people want to know how the work they do helps others. Your basic needs must be met. Your work must be engaging, and you must have a clear understanding of how you are doing. You must have supportive co-workers and a leader. If you approach your career as if you are putting together a puzzle, and start with your strengths as the corner pieces, and then add the outside pieces, which are your wants and values, you will have the framework of your ideal career profile. Scott and his team at Happen to Your Career have put together “The Ultimate Guide to Using Your Strengths to Get Hired.” Find Your Dream Job listeners can download this resource for free at Happentoyourcareer.com/macslist. Most people dread the job application process as they try and stand out in a sea of people who are just as qualified and just as hungry to make it through the first portion of the process: the weeding out phase. Surprisingly, even the “most skilled” people struggle to get their foot in the door when applying for jobs. But, there is a little population of the workforce that usually doesn’t have that problem. This group of people are the High Performers – the people who get the early promotions, the big raises, and the exceptional treatment. While the rest of the world goes into the job application process with the mindset of getting the job, high performers go into the process with the mindset of using this phase to collect as much information about the job, the organization, and the culture of the organization to determine if this is a good fit for them. Wondering how you can get results like High Performers do? On today’s podcast, we tackle: Why even some of the most skilled professionals still struggle with the hiring process How you can do to position yourself to stand out among the competition The 3 key principles that you can apply to your own job application process to immediately get the results you want What are you waiting for, listen to JOB APPLICATIONS: How to Get Results to learn more about and how to follow the High Performer route and get noticed by the hiring manager today!

Find Your Dream Job: Insider Tips for Finding Work, Advancing your Career, and Loving Your Job

Do you know how to get a job you love? It’s OK if you don’t. Most people do not believe it is even possible. A traditional job search includes scouring job postings and identifying with skills an employer is looking for. Today’s conversation turns the table on tradition and encourages job seekers to first identify and then search for a job they will love. Guest, Scott Barlow uses putting a puzzle together as an analogy for identifying which type of job you will probably love. Signature Strengths are your inherent qualities which give you a natural and unfair advantage over another person. These strengths can be seen as the corner pieces of the puzzle as they are easy to recognize. Identifying these strengths is the first step in the process of finding a job you love. To assist you in figuring out what your strengths are, try: StrengthsFinder 2.0  Get Feedback from those who know you well enough to give you a truthful answer to the question “What do I do well?” The ideal work environment for you is a company which values the same things you do. Think about a workplace you would flourish in. These are the edge pieces of the puzzle, the framework of what you should be looking for when you search for a job. If you pre-identify the companies which closely match your ideal work environment, you can make contacts within the organizations before a job is posted online. You can place yourself first in line when a position becomes available. Go after the things you are great at and focus on the things you place the most value in! Katie Smith is the founder and Chief Enabled Careerist at Careerable. At Careerable, Katie helps individuals become “enabled careerists” by equipping them with the skills and tools they need to excel in today's 21st-century career landscape. Her mission is to help others define and strive for their own personal definition of professional success. KATIE SMITH CAREER COACHING Katie views career coaching more like career discovery.  It's the combination of career development, answering the what do I want to do with my life and job searching.   Katie works mostly with 20 to 30 years old but she also works with a fair amount of career changers who don't know what LinkedIn is or don't see the value in the platform.  Twitter? Forget about it. As a career coach Katie serves as a partner to help her clients on their journey using her 4-step process, she calls A.B.L.E. which is an acronym for Analyze, Brand, Leverage, and Embark .   4-Step CareerABLE Process Analyze: This step requires the most time commitment but it is also the most important.  Katie's clients are required to identify their personal mission statement during this step.  Katie explains the point of the Analyze step is to determine what you want your life to look like and how your career fits into that vision. During this step, you will reach out to others to help you identify your values, skills, and strengths. This is very similar to what Scott Barlow and I discussed during our conversation. Additionally, you'll identify your ideal job or working conditions and Katie has her clients take The Birkman Method during this step as well.   Similar to Myers-Briggs, the Birkman looks at a variety of things like your interests but where it differs is with the job report it generates.  Based on your assessment responses, the job report will suggest potential career paths and/or jobs you should consider. Brand: Katie reviews both the online and offline brand of her clients.  This includes reviewing the resume, LinkedIn profiles, and social media accounts not only for current content but to ensure they are aligned with the direction you identified in the Analyze step. Additionally during the Brand step, Katie works with her clients to help them articulate what they want both online and offline. Leverage: Katie has a saying for the leverage step, “leverage your network, learn through relationships”.  In Leverage, her clients begin to use their network to help them determine what they want and maybe more importantly, what they don't want from their career. You may remember Olivia Gamber taking about scheduling coffee meetings with people who hold positions you are interested in.  This is the same concept and, yes, this is the networking step.  You will need to reach out to others and have conversations.   If you struggle with networking, Katie suggests you redefine it to how you can add value to others not how many business cards you can hand out. Embark: Embark is all about taking action.  This is also where from an accountability standpoint, a career coach can add a lot of value.  They will act as an accountability partner, just like a coach at the gym. All along the way Katie has helped her clients develop an action plan for finding their next position.  During Embark, she provides them with the reassurance and accountability needed to execute against the plan.   THE BEST WAYS TO REACH KATIE SMITH OF CAREERABLE Web: careerable.com Twitter: @careerablecoach Email: katie@careerable.com   Do you know what your online profile says about you?  Find out by taking my Online Brand Assessment.Discover your score and the ways you can start to improve your score today! In preparation for an upcoming trip to Nashville, I decided to order some new business cards. I know there are people who don't order business cards. That is fine. I also know at least one person who will not accept business cards. That is fine too, even though it can be a little awkward. But I can think of one situation when I ran out of business cards and decided not to order new ones. Who needs them, I thought. Then I gave a presentation for a home builders association. After I was done, I had someone tell me they wanted to talk about doing some work for them. They asked for a business card so they could follow up. I did not have a card, and I never heard from them. A business card is a simple, cheap way not to let that happen again. Some people like business cards and I want to make it as easy as possible for them to contact me. If 99 of your cards are thrown away, but the 100th person follows up with you, isn't it still worth it? I think so, and I wanted to get some cards made for my trip to Nashville. I ordered the cards through Moo.com because I have always been impressed with the quality of their products. This time, I got bold and ordered square business cards. More likely to get throw away I thought, but also more likely to stand out. So I quickly designed the front of a new card in Canva, uploaded my logo for the back of the card and submitted my order. The cards arrived a few days later, and I was excited to open them. As soon as I slide the square white card out of the box I realized I had made an error. The logo on the back of the card was not centered. There was no way I was going to give those cards out to people. I was lamenting my error to Scott Barlow when he suggested I contact Moo. He claimed they had an outrageous satisfaction policy. Not a chance, I thought. This was my error and Moo was not likely to help out. I was curious enough to check the website. On the Moo website, I found what they call the Moo promise, which is; MOO's promise We've never thought 'satisfaction guaranteed' was the most inspiring phrase. We'd like you to be satisfied of course, but we'd prefer it if you were absolutely thrilled beyond words with your order. We take great pride in our work, and we want you to feel the same about yours. So, even for the tiniest of typos, we'll move heaven and earth to make sure you get exactly what you want – or your money back!” My call with Moo proves they back up their promise. They do make sure you get exactly what you want. Here are the three things you can learn from the exceptional service Moo delivers on the phone; Answer the phone with a smile. Make it a policy to delight your customers. Give your customers more than they expect. If you would like to try Moo, you can get 10% off your first order by clicking here.

His ultimate goal is to help you find those Ah Ha moments, so you can take control of your career journey and begin living A life.. that is.. unapologetically you! HAPPEN TO YOUR CAREER - FIGURE IT OUT The Figure It Out course is for anyone who is struggling in their career and is not sure where to start or feels a calling to do something different but doesn't yet know what that is. Scott explains The Figure It Out methodology by comparing it to building a puzzle. Just like a puzzle, in order to figure out your career direction you first need to start with the corner pieces, or as Scott calls them your signature strengths. There are many ways you can discover your strengths. The StrengthsFinder 2.0 assessment is just one. You may remember my conversation with Lisa Cummings, a Gallup Certified Strengths coach, on the importance of understanding your strengths. Scott agrees which is why he makes your strengths the corner pieces in your career puzzle. Once you've identified your corner pieces, the next step in the process is to build out your frame. This part, in my opinion, is the hardest one and it's one we will all struggle with because it requires us to take an inventory of our lives for maybe the first time. The email course provides you with several exercises designed to help you walk through and prioritize all aspects of your life including areas such as your environment, your finances, family, personal growth and even your health. Scott explains during the show how all of these areas may overlap today but by prioritizing them, you begin to turn them into puzzles pieces that fit together in a way to build the complete picture. The reason this step is so difficult is because it requires you to make decisions and for many of us decisions don't come easy. However, is we really want to make a difference in our lives and our careers, decisions are exactly what we need to make. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.” The same is true in our careers, but how many of you reading this can answer the question, “What do you want out of life and your career?” If you find yourself struggling to answer this question, Scott's course is for you. Scott Barlow and wife, Alyssa, creators of Happen to Your Career, share their real-life story of how they learned to manage money, paid off a tremendous amount of debt, and created a business helping others navigate their career path while being able to stay at home with their family. This dynamic couple made me laugh, look deeper and enjoy our time together.  We cover: High school sweethearts figured out money in the world. Scott built his first business in college. Their first career move and settled into the house, dream cars and then lost a job. How they determined to get serious about finances. Finding themselves in the "Bad Spot."  And how he told her it was time to fix it. The numbers were more surprising than they realized. "Counting your debt in airline miles..." is not the best way to evaluate it. It was not easy. How they work as business team and still maintain marital bliss. "I can create things that are valuable for other people...and make money!" Asking for a raise is possible.   How do you take control of your income, your health, your life...?  They are all interrelated. When they stopped moving up the career ladder and decided to make his business- to their business. Working at their company, balancing the details with big picture perspective. My guest entrepreneur on todays episode of the Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who like a select band of guests have decided to return again and join up more dots. Yes, back on episode 37 of Join Up Dots, when the show was just a baby, and I was finding my feet, he came on the show with his business partner of the time Mark Sieverkropp. And wasnt I glad that he said yes, as in the first show we discussed how they were building the online career advice platform Happen To Your Career, and in that discussion spoke about the hustle, early mornings, and desire that it takes to bootstrap something and take it out to the world. Happen To Your Career, is a place that is built with the owners desire, and passions being its idea avatar. You can see that the concept would have been something that our guest would have been looking for, so he created it himself. As he says "I have always had an unusual outlook on careers. My wife Alyssa, who I met in high school, knows this to be true. I have left what others considered “good jobs” turned down job offers other people would love and any time I have wanted to make more income have simply figured out a plan and acted upon it. I have to be doing something I am excited about to be happy. Having had 8 positions in the last 10 years (including successfully self employed) has caused me to have many experiences in a short period of time." I have owned a successful business in contracting, led others as a people and human resources professional, coached business owners and leaders to success, and helped many people develop their careers along the way. I have worked a variety of industries including: manufacturing, retail, government, food, construction and more. Everywhere I went I saw people struggling to figure out what they want to do and how to get there." So has he got there himself. Is the platform he created truly what he wants, or is it still work in development? Like most things created by a desire to help the world will it ever be truly realised? Well lets find, as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only career expert Mr Scott Barlow.

Our guests today are the powerhouses behind my favourite podcast Happen To Your Career. However in this case, the podcast is just a small part of what is a passion filled centre of resource for all of us who are looking for a change in our career. They quite simply believe that it is our their unique path in life to ensure that we all fill our days with work that delights us. So how have they done this? Well of course, they have a passion for the task, and they also have been in jobs and positions that have filled them with dread. Coming home exhausted, hating their bosses and seeing very little of their families they knew that they had to do something. And we are glad that they have because without guys like this in the world, providing support and encouragement, helping with decisions so many of us would be in similar daily situations. So lets bring onto the show to start joining up the dots of their lives, Mr Scott Barlow and Mr Mark Sieverkropp.

A few people have been talking about the new HIPAA training from Reflexion. In my brain, Reflexion = Spam Filtering. So how do you get from there to HIPAA training and certification? So I called Scott Barlow, VP of Sales and Marketing at Reflexion. HIPAA Training from Reflexion Scott ended up giving me a great education on HIPAA requirements, the one important “Business Associate Agreement” you need to have, and how you can get certified and resell certification to your clients. Scott tells stories about very small companies being fined due to HIPAA compliance issues – including a 5-physician that was fined $100,000! Training is very straight forward and very inexpensive. The course has ten sections with quizzes at the end. Then the course as a whole has a 50-question test at the end. It is 100% online and costs only $299! Best take-away is the template you get for your Business Associate Agreement. If you’re looking for a great additional source of revenue, and you want to work with people in the medical community, please listen to this podcast. Very informative! – Download the Interview with Scott Barlow here. For more information on Reflexion, see www.reflexion.net.
