In the 2nd episode of the week I am joined by Colin Ramsay the Author of the best selling Golf Book 'A Golfer's Bucket List of Scottish Golf Courses'. Colin tells us how he started playing the game back in 1971 & still going strong at 67 years young! Colin explains how the idea of the book came from a constant phrase said at all the different Clubhouses of that's another Golf Course ticked off the list. Craig tests Colin's knowledge on Regional parts of Scotland and asks for top 2/3 courses in that region with a great discussion also about St Andrews and the current state of it being pretty much overpowered! I absolutely loved doing this one and I absolutely love Colin's enthusiasm for the game still. At a whopping 282 courses played over Scotland in 550+ courses I wish Colin every success in achieving his goals of playing every single golf course in Scotland! I hope you enjoy it!
Are you interested in learning our one man's passion for investing changed the footprint of a city and the history of the Investment industry? With that in mind, welcome to the 50th episode of the Investing Matters series with me Peter Higgins @conkers3 on Twitter. As a global Investing Matters audience, you are all in for an absolute treat because this interview is with one of the true Scottish, UK and global heavyweights of the independent asset management industry. None other than the multiple award-winning Martin Gilbert FRSE, co-founder and former CEO of Aberdeen Asset Manager and the Executive Chairman of AssetCo Plc. Martin Gilbert, the humble and proud Chartered Accountant, was educated at Robert Gordon's College in Aberdeen, he then attended the same Law School as Alistair Darling (the former Chancellor of the Exchequer) at the University of Aberdeen, where is gained his law degree and his master's degree in accountancy. After university, he joined Deloitte and qualified as a chartered accountant. In 1982, he joined the investment department of local law firm Brander & Cruikshank, and a year or so later, with two others undertook a management buyout of its investment department. The new entity was called Aberdeen Fund Managers and had initial share capital of just £10,000 with £70m of assets under management, because as Martin now describes it in the 1980's asset managers were a “small cottage industry” Martin co-founded Aberdeen Fund Managers / Aberdeen Asset Management PLC in 1983 and was Chief Executive Officer from 1991 to 2017 (making him one of the longest serving CEO's at the time). During that period Aberdeen Asset Management PLC grew, through a combination of organic growth and strategic acquisition, to become one of the world's leading independent asset managers with £308 billion of AUM. In 2017 Aberdeen Asset Management PLC merged with Standard Life plc, to become Standard Life Aberdeen plc. On merging, Standard Life Aberdeen plc was the biggest UK-based asset management company and the second biggest in Europe. Martin was co-chief executive officer and subsequently vice chairman until he retired from Standard Life Aberdeen plc in September 2020. Martin is chairman of Revolut Ltd and Toscafund, deputy chairman of River and Mercantile Group PLC and senior independent director of Glencore plc, Chair of Scottish Golf, alongside several other directorships. Please listen now to learn how Martin Gilbert FRSE, the shrewd dealer maker grew Aberdeen Fund Managers into the global investment firm that we knew as Aberdeen Asset Management. Martin shares lessons learnt from encountering significant lows, including his now dislike of geared investing products/ structures and his huge successes as a CEO and leader. He explains how he identifies transformational deals, the very best fund Managers and how he retains them. Why recurring revenues are vital, the successful straits required in order to achieve long-term investing success as a CEO, fund manager and an investor. Why ESG is important, being Chairman of The Net Zero Technology Centre and its role in the energy industry. His current favourite investing markets, plus why he sees huge value in UK mid cap and even more value in the UK small cap. Martin shares an overview of Assetco Plc, a holding company for a group of wealth and asset management companies, for which he has a goal of growing into a FTSE 250 listed company. Given what Martin achieved with Aberdeen Asset Management and with the wisdom given to him by none other than Sir Alex Ferguson, I'd say that with the foundations already laid across, Active Equities, Infrastructure Asset Management, Exchange Traded Funds and Digital Platform that there is every possibility that Assetco goes onto achieve significant success. In the early days of golf podcasting, Ru Macdonald was one of the first hosts to take a deep dive into the courses of Scotland. His show, The Scottish Golf Podcast became an important outlet for those like me who were looking to learn more about the many lesser known golf options in the game's native land. The stories he shared in those show helped to spark a whole new wave of appreciation for Scotland's hidden gem links courses. Today, Macdonald is using those same storytelling skills to help the European Tour develop widely viewed content for their social media channels. I've been a big fan of Macdonald's work for years and his podcast is one of the main reasons for my Scottish golf obsession. Although I still haven't had a chance to hop over the pond for a visit yet, I like to stay in touch with him for when I eventually pull that trigger. Macdonald and I got the chance to catch up for a lengthy chat as he was taking a break from a long day of work at the 2021 Scottish Open. Chatting from his hotel room in the COVID19 protocol bubble, Macdonald and I discussed the current state of golf in Scotland, how the travel industry there is poised for a big comeback in 2022, and of course what his world is like right now helping create viral content for the European tour. It was great to speak with Macdonald during the middle of one of the tour's biggest events. I'll be watching the Scottish Open closely and keeping an eye out for the content he's creating around the event. I'm sure it will only worsen my desire to travel to Scotland and see their links first hand. If you haven't listened to the Scottish Golf Podcast before, be sure to go and subscribe as Macdonald is still producing great episodes there. Also, be sure to follow him on twitter at @RuMacdonald . Alan Tait first picked up a club at 5 years old. His love for the game was evident from this very early age and it was always his dream to pursue a career in golf. By the time he was 17 he was playing off plus 2 and in 1986 he won The Scottish Boys Championship, before going on to win The Doug Sanders European and World Junior Championships in the same year. During his amateur career he represented Scotland and Great Britain and Ireland and became only the 5th player in Scottish Golf history to be capped at boys, youths and senior levels in the same year.Alan turned professional in 1990 and is probably best known for being the first player ever to shoot 64 (8 under par) at the Championship Course at Carnoustie in 1994 at The Daily Express 72-Hole Pro Am Championship. This record stood for 23 years until none other than Englishman and Ryder Cup star Tommy Fleetwood went one better shooting a 63 in The 2017 Dunhill Links. In this episode Alan shares a marvelous story about being pair with 15-time major champion Tiger Woods and 2-time Masters champion Ben Crenshaw for a practice round at Carnoustie in 1995, a memorable round of golf that gave him the opportunity to teach Tiger and Ben about how to play Carnoustie to help them prepare for playing the 1995 Scottish Open being held at the course. Although success was hard to find on the European Tour Alan looks back at his experience with fond memories. He enjoys working for BBC Radio Scotland, commentating at events such as The Open, Scottish Open, Ryder and Solheim Cups.Currently Alan is Director of Operations for the UK working for GolPhin. GolPhin is a company focused on growing the game from grass roots through their education programme, MyPathway2Golf coaching initiative and also their award winning equipment, designed for 3-14 year olds.Connect With AlanWebsite: https://usa.golphin.com/Email: alan@golphin.co.uk

THE LINKS DIARY - with Jamie Darling I love when you watch an idea grow into a concept and then come to bear. This is exactly what we have witnessed over the last 12 months. Four young Scottish Golf enthusiasts all with a variety of skills ( not necessarily in magazine publishing ) come together to produce a wonderful homage to the heartbeat of golf in Scotland - The Links Diary. Now, you guys know me well enough by now to know that my connection to my parental and ancestral roots is a strong bond. So naturally, I am going to be excited by the production of this journal. The fact that something from Scotland is going to sit in the bookshelf behind me here where I record, alongside the other golf journals maybe you are more familiar with. Well, that just makes me happy. At MLOG I have had the please to get to know the guys ( Jamie, Graeme, Kenny, Stu) from afar. We have collaborated on Podcast, RGC Scotland and even the MLOG Logo and this is a fact I am unashamedly proud of. So, sharing a piece of the Links Diary journey with you is another step toward my dream of maybe one day, putting pen to paper. As these lads know, dreams can come reality. The Gather Global Podcast aims to deliver genuine insight and offer you new perspectives on the golf industry, and this episode with Clare Queen and David Kearney goes above and beyond on both fronts.Clare is Head of Performance at Scottish Golf, and David is Performance Director at Irish Ladies Golfing Union. The conversation kicks off with an insight from David about the effect of the global pandemic on golf, which goes far beyond the typical commentary about golf 'enjoying a boom'.As well as discussing the impact of the pandemic on performance programmes - your host Colin Bell, Clare and David visit the culture of national associations, why parents might be holding back elite youngsters, and the benefits of maximising your personal strengths - a principle that is just as applicable to life as to golf.Timestamps2:56 How COVID-19 is forcing a (well needed?) re-think about how the top amateur golfers are supported by national associations.10:36 How a shift in culture, from top down, within a national golf association can contribute towards increased opportunities for former elite female players to remain working in the sport.21:06 Why do golf magazines not have women on the front covers?22:26 “The golf club membership situation drives me bonkers!” – hear what a hugely respected industry golf professional thinks about the culture still evident in some clubs and why it would stop him from joining a club.28:06 Learn about a HUGE rarely-discussed problem in golf. Why a high percentage of young players and their parents do not really understand golf and the significant impact this has on how young golfers develop.36:34 The benefits of doubling down on your strengths and not beating yourself up in your ‘examination of the self'.41:21 A very generous offering of help from David to anyone currently struggling in the industry.Jazzaddict's Intro by Cosimo Fogg (201) is licensed under a Creative Commons License.Grave Matters by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100215Artist: http://incompetech.com/Sound effect: licensed under Creative Commons from Medartmus See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

If you haven't already, click on to our dedicated WHS page where you can find detailed explanations of everything from how your handicap might move under the new system to what you need to think about in competitions. But if you're a bit short of time and just want to get your head around a few of the key concepts then we have also got you covered. We've teamed up with Scottish Golf to produce a series of short 10-minute podcasts going into more depth about some of the new system's key concepts. The World Handicap System and one of the biggest changes to the way we play the game in decades comes into force on November 2. David Kernohan is handicapping and course rating officer for Scottish Golf and is leading the way in implementing the new system north of the border. We asked him to give us a beginners' guide to WHS and he answers some of your questions too….
