Paul Thek (1933-1988), l'un des artistes américains les plus singuliers de la seconde moitié du 20e siècle, a toujours refusé d'appartenir aux courants artistiques dominants. Au cours des années 1960, son travail s'est développé en marge du Pop art et de l'art minimal, prenant le corps comme sujet dans sa représentation la plus charnelle. Personnalité libre, artiste voyageur, il a pendant quinze ans circulé en Europe et a vécu notamment en Italie dont l'art et la culture ont profondément nourri certaines de ses créations. Auteur d'une œuvre inclassable et incroyablement diversifiée (« Technological Reliquaries », installations éphémères et collectives, peintures et dessins…), Paul Thek n'a cessé d'entremêler dans son travail ces oppositions qui ont été au centre de sa vie : le spirituel et le corporel, la vie et la mort, le sacré et le profane. Valérie Da Costa, auteure du récent livre Paul Thek en Italie / Paul Thek in Italy 1962-1976 (Presses du Réel), revient sur son œuvre à l'occasion de l'exposition que lui consacre le MAMCO de Genève de mars à juin 2024 et dont elle assure le co-commissariat. Valérie Da Costa est historienne de l'art, critique d'art et commissaire d'exposition. Elle est maîtresse de conférences HDR en histoire de l'art contemporain (XXe-XXIe siècles) à l'Université de Strasbourg. Ses recherches portent notamment sur l'art italien de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle sur lequel elle a publié de nombreux textes et livres. Elle a été commissaire de l'exposition « Vita Nuova. Ben Luke talks to Mike Nelson about his influences—from the worlds of literature, film, music and, of course, art—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Nelson, born in 1967 in Loughborough in the UK, is one of the most significant British sculptors and installation artists of this century. He has spent the past three decades assembling materials gathered in junkyards, flea markets, online auctions, even street-corner fly tips into often labyrinthine sculptural environments. He creates distinctive spaces that suggest fictional (and often science-fictional) narratives, while alluding to diverse histories, obscure countercultural or political movements and current affairs as well as his own biography. He discusses the early influence of Graham Sutherland and Francis Bacon, his elation at discovering the work of Paul Thek, how fiction—and science-fiction writers like Stanislaw Lem, J.G. Kenny Schachter has an insatiable appetite for all things art. The polymathic art dealer, curator, teacher, writer, critic, collector, and self-taught artist brings a Tasmanian Devil–level energy to all that he does, but always with great, arms-open passion and, even within his whirlwind of ideas and projects, deep focus. For good reason, he has become a sort of enfant terrible in the art world, someone who's not afraid to speak his mind, and who doesn't care about ruffling feathers or messing with the establishment. He pushes against the status quo, and happily so. Schachter is a believer in high culture as much as low, and brings little pretension to his craft, no matter the medium, even if considerable rigor underlies it. Often, he's decidedly coy.Schachter's love of art is bona fide and lifelong. Not only did art prove a helpful outlet for him during a difficult childhood, but it has also blossomed into a way of growing closer to his family (particularly with his children, with whom he has mounted a series of inventive exhibitions). Schachter especially appreciates art for its ability to help him depict the time he's living in. For him, art also serves as a form of cultural and personal commentary and as a mode of humor, often the self-deprecating variety. Mike Nelson is an artist whose influential works oscillate between salvage yards and dreamscapes. He works with things from the present and the just-past, to create these spaces, that ask you to think twice about contemporary culture, and our ways of being. In his words through situations that are on the brink of obsolescence. Mike Nelson's lessons on the agency and potency of objects, and his take on his own positionality as an artist; through the metaphor of sliders on an equalizer were thought-provoking. On every occasion, an artist has to decide over a multiplicity of issues, over ethics, politics, effects, income, and many other dimensions. Ep.90 features Writer, curator, lecturer, artist, NFT evangelist Kenny Schachter. He has been curating contemporary art exhibits in museums and galleries and teaching (art history and economics) for more than thirty years; presently in the graduate department of the University of Zurich (appointed to advisory board January 2021) professorships at the School of Visual Arts (NY) and New York University. He has lectured internationally, been the recipient of a Rockefeller supported grant in Mexico, and contributed to books on Paul Thek, Zaha Hadid, Vito Acconci and Sigmar Polke/Gerhard Richter. Schachter has a regular column on Artnet.com in addition to writing widely for various international publications including most recently New York Magazine and The Times Magazine (UK). He had a retrospective of his art at Joel Mesler's Rental Gallery in New York in the summer of 2018, curated an exhibit at Simon Lee Gallery in London, fall 2018 and a one person show at Kantor Gallery, LA, February 2019. After having made digital art for decades, Schachter has spearheaded the traditional art world's adaptation of Non Fungible Tokens in 2021 by lecturing from Yale to the Hirschhorn Museum and written 8 feature articles for Artnet on the subject. He has lectured internationally, been the recipient of a Rockefeller supported grant, written portions of books published by Springer Wien New York (2006, with Vito Acconci, edited by Cristina Bechtler) and MIT Press (2009, on Paul Thek, edited by Harald Falckenberg), and been profiled in The New York Times Magazine, and London's Observer, Independent, and Telegraph. Received planning permission to erect Zaha Hadid's first building in England, situated on Hoxton Square. Werkschau im Kontext zeitgenössischer Kunst | Werkvorstellung De holländische Künstler Zeger Reyers spricht in der Ausstellung über die Arbeit Zeger Reyers / Lee Ranaldo: »Träge Thorens« (2001-2007) Der amerikanische Künstler Paul Thek (1933-1988) genießt unter den zeitgenössischen Künstlern Kultstatus – durch sein spannungsreiches Œuvre, in dem er Themen und Symbole aus Religion, Kunst, Theater und Literatur aufgreift, nimmt sein Werk bis heute bedeutenden Einfluss auf die Gegenwartskunst. Zeichnung, Malerei, Skulptur, Installation und raumgreifende Environments gehören gleichermaßen zu Theks Ausdrucksmitteln. Seine Kunstwerke zeigen sich mystisch, religiös und kritisch sozialen Ungerechtigkeiten wie auch der Kunstwelt gegenüber, wobei er mitunter widersprüchlich zwischen nomadieserendem Hippietum und verklärendem Charismatiker pendelt, aber auch nicht selten eine Portion Melancholie und Humor in seine Werke mit hinein spielt. It is mainly for this reason that one of the early theoretical masterpieces of this epoch, Susan Sontag's Against Interpretation (1962), was dedicated to him. The mold castings, also those of his own body parts, wax replicas of human tissue, hair, teeth, and bones in Plexiglas cases, which he produced between 1964 and 1967 as Technological Reliquaries, in their mixture of desire and repulsion, decay and pathos, held up the truth of the body to the world of commodities and the transfiguration of the everyday, as well as the idealization and dramatization of corporative minimal art.
