It's the start of SEASON SEVEN! And original co-host Rowenna Miller is back to join us in a reflection of how multiple years of doing this podcast has affected how each of us thinks about worldbuilding. What have we learned from our many amazing guests, and how have they inspired us to think about worldbuilding in new ways? Have our worldbuilding interests and focuses shifted? And since the real world we live in has been... um... interesting over the past several years, how has that -- and the changes in our own lives and careers -- influenced our work? (Transcript for Episode 157 -- Thank you, scribes!) Our Guest: Rowenna Miller is the author of the Unraveled Kingdom trilogy, The Fairy Bargains of Prospect Hill, and The Palace of Illusions, as well as short fiction. She is also a prior cohost of this podcast! And also an English professor, and a fairly handy seamstress. She lives in Indiana with her husband, two daughters, four cats, and an ever-growing flock of chickens.
Mark Roberge and Edgar Troncoso from the band Prospect Hill joined Tom today to talk about their rise to fame, changes in the band, their new sound, new releases and helping local artists!
The first engagement against the Crown forces that involved soldiers from multiple provinces operating under a unified command. The first use of field artillery by the Provincial forces. The destruction of the HMS Diana, whose mainmast was to be used to hoist the "Grand Union Flag" atop Prospect Hill on January 1, 1776. Few engagements can boast so much, and yet the engagement that has become known locally as "The Battle of Chelsea Creek" has all of those stories and so much more. We talk with local author, journalist and historian Jeff Pearlman about the engagement on Noddle's and Hog Islands and the loss of the HMS Diana on the 27th of May 1775.Tell us what you think! As with the last two “back to basics” episodes, we thought we'd spend some time looking the thing that (usually, though there are exceptions) makes fantasy fantastical – the magic! How do we build magical systems, and what questions do we ask ourselves while doing so? Guest and former WFM co-host Rowenna Miller joins us to discuss how, exactly, we make magic! With magic being a foundational element of a world, when it exists in one, how does it touch all the other things that are in your world? Where does it come from (and is that the same thing as where your characters think it comes from)? Who can use it? Does that confer power -- or draw persecution? What are the limits on what magic can do -- and how might your characters push those boundaries? Magic is such a powerful force, and there are so many exciting ways to build it into your story! (Transcript for Episode 140 -- thank you, scribes!) Our Guest: Rowenna Miller is the author of the Unraveled Kingdom trilogy and The Fairy Bargains of Prospect Hill, as well as short fiction. During the summer of 1775, when the siege of Boston was at its peak, about 1500 Pennsylvania Riflemen answered a call for volunteers. By the time they reached the American lines in Cambridge, expectations for these troops were through the roof. Thanks in no small part to a publicity campaign engineered by John Adams, the New England officers commanding the troops around Boston believed that these fresh troops were capable of nearly everything. Their reputation was based in part upon the riflemen's origins on the frontier, and in part on the advanced weaponry they carried. While they're the status quo today, rifles were new to both armies that were facing off in Boston and nearly unheard of here in New England. However, fame went to these soldiers' heads, and after only a couple of months on the front line, they were nearly ungovernable. They refused to take part in the regular duties of an American soldier, they staged jailbreaks when their comrades were locked up for infractions against military discipline, and on September 10th, they staged the first mutiny in the new Continental Army. Today's guest, Dom Flemons, co-founded the Carolina Chocolate Drops in 2005, and on their third studio album, Genuine Negro Jig they won the 2010 Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album. His 2018 album, Black Cowboys, recorded on the Smithsonian Folkways label, was nominated for a 2019 Grammy in the same category, and he has been nominated for two Emmys. Most recently he was awarded the prestigious 2020 United States Artist Fellowship and his 2014 album , Prospect Hill with Omnibus Records, has been re-issued.He has adopted the moniker "American Songster," and this was not him just claiming a title that sounded cool. Nope, its earned. not only by way of the awards and high-praise he has received for his contributions to 20+ album collaborations, along with his seven solo albums, but also because he puts in the work researching what he plays. We learn so much from Don in this episode, not the least being that he has let his interest in his heritage and the music he has identified with over the years pull him into some very fruitful rabbit holes. So yes, he's a historian, but he's also allowed his ongoing education about cultures in which he's identified, as well as about the music, it's origins stories and about the instruments used to create such music. And of course, he's become a master on many of those instruments over the years. How did Michele Hobbs go from selling dog food to launching a distillery? The Prospect Hill entrepreneur talks about her 26-year journey of investing in Over-the-Rhine businesses on The Enquirer's "That's So Cincinnati" podcast. After years of running Pet Wants at Findlay Market, Hobbs opened Knox Joseph Distillery at OTR StillHouse (2017 Branch Street) in December. She wanted to focus on building a distillery as a way to complement rather than compete with the many breweries, bars and restaurants that have opened amid OTR's 21st century renaissance. Knox Joseph, named after one of Hobbs' children, features a large indoor/outdoor space for drinking, dining and concerts. With much of the country blanketed under deep snow and underlying frost that had brought hundreds of mills and factories to a close with over 15,000 workers within East Lancashire alone all being left unable to work, for children – it brought an unexpected break from their daily chores of not just work but that also of school. Many took to the parks and playing fields to enjoy the extended break, throwing snowballs, making snowmen and if they had the means, they would find somewhere steep enough to enjoy the rare opportunity to sledge down. And it's within the township of Haslingden that we are once again travelling back to, and to the evening of Wednesday, 3rd March 1909 as we delve into the story of the Charles Lane toboggan misadventure. Fifty year old, James Roberts, a waste breaker who was employed at Spring Vale mill, had left work at around 7.40pm to make his way home at nearby 27 Prospect Hill. With him was a man named Havelock Bond, an engineer who also worked at the same mill as James. Taking a pipe out from his jacket, lighting it and after a couple of puffs of smoke, Havelock patted James on his back, telling him it wouldn't be long before they both reached their homes, despite the lane ahead being in a hazardous condition. “Aye, perhaps your ‘reet.” replied James as he lit his own pipe.

Alright everyone, grab your seats. Get your pencils and notebooks out and put on your thinking caps. American music school is in session! Our teacher for this episode of For Songs is Dom Flemons, founding member of the Grammy winning, groundbreaking African-American string band the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Listen and learn how Dom has spent his career unearthing and highlighting the vital role Black musicians played in American folk music. We discuss the breathtaking Prospect Hill: The American Songster Omnibus, his 2014 album that he reissued and repackaged last February, just as the pandemic shuttered life as we know it. Prospect Hill covers a century or more of musical history, ranging from folk, country, jazz, blues, to early 80s hip hop. Dom talks about his musical prowess and how the purchase of a new banjo called Big Head Joe contributed to the revisiting of the album. So get comfortable and take good notes—and welcome Dom to For Songs.
Conversation with Dom Flemons and music from his album Prospect Hill, as well as selections from that record’s reissue disc of bonus material. Plus, you will hear Dom joining up with Reverend Peyton and Steve Cropper on a new cover of “Shake Your Moneymaker”.

Every Civil War buff knows there are never enough maps (enough GOOD maps) to illustrate a battle or campaign. Our April speaker, Dr. Brad Gottfried, has addressed this concern by embarking on a journey to map every campaign in the Eastern Theater of the Civil War. His most recent effort, The Maps of the Fredericksburg Campaign, will be the subject his talk to our group. While most know of the futile attempts to capture Marye's Heights, fewer know about the other major action at Prospect Hill that almost cost Lee his decisive victory. He will also illustrate the challenges Robert E. Lee and Ambrose Burnside experienced in getting their armies to Fredericksburg and the dreadful January Mud March. Gottfried will have books on hand that he will sell and sign at a discount. Brad Gottfried retired after a 40 year career in higher education. After receiving his Ph.D. in Zoology, he taught for eleven years at three colleges and then became an administrator. He ultimately served as president of two colleges for seventeen years. Gottfried has received a number of national and regional awards and recognitions for his leadership including: the National Council of Marketing Professionals' National Pacesetter of the Year and Leadership Maryland's Gold Leadership Award. As a historian, Brad has authored thirteen books and two additional works are moving through the editorial process. After writing five Gettysburg books, Brad has devoted his time to researching and writing a series of map studies of the Eastern Theater Campaigns, including the: Maps of First Bull Run, Maps of Antietam, Maps of Gettysburg, Maps of Bristoe Station & Mine Run, Maps of the Wilderness, and his newest volume, the Maps of Fredericksburg. He has completed two other books in the series, which should be published in the next few years: The Maps of the Cavalry in the Gettysburg Campaign and the Maps of the Spotsylvania/Overland Campaign. His Maps of the Petersburg Campaign is well under way. He has also completed a small book on the Point Lookout Prisoner of War Camp for Confederates, which he wrote with his wife and is self-published.

Lesie, Scott, and Phil, are all members of Protect Caswell, a chapter of the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League that is dedicated to help protect and preserve rights in Caswell County, NC. They are fighting Carolina Sunrock, LLC, a company that plans to run three large hot mix asphalt plants producing over two and a half million tons of asphalt per year, plus three truck mix cement plants, two stone crushers, and three power generators at three separate sites within 10 miles of each other in their community of Caswell County, NC. Asphalt plants are sources of air pollution that may emit significant levels of both particulate matter and gaseous volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These pollutants are considered to be dangerous to human health. One action that the Protect Caswell Chapter has made is a formal request to the Board of Commissioners for a comprehensive review of existing and proposed paving industry permits in the Prospect Hill and Anderson communities. They said "We submit to you this request for a multiple source review. We believe the draft permits are fatally flawed because they fail to protect public health." She concluded, "We just want all these smokestacks looked at together because they all emit toxic air pollution." With Leslie, Scott, and Phil, we discuss how they got started as a chapter, how they informed their county commissioners about theses industries coming in, actions they are taking, flaws they found in the asphalt plants permits, and how others can help. “I have no plan b on backing down on my dreams.”Frank Palangi lives by that saying with his career and it shines through his work. He fuels his own feeding frenzy of modern rock with a solid sound like any 1970's muscle car (that he hopes to own someday). His old school sense is a key part of his personally and way of life. At the core, he is a singer/songwriter with a gritty bass rock voice pouring his heart and soul into lyrics based on life experiences and subject matter. Portraying a positive image to his fans, it's fresh to see an artist who respects himself. It's exciting to see he's not afraid to take chances and living outside the box. From being a multi-instrumentalist and constantly writing and creating, his creativity, drive and passion to acheive his dreams is always growing. With a discography ranging from 4 demo records in Frank's teen years to his current independent EP records (Frank Palangi EP, I Am Ready EP) and new singles that include “Hope”, "Falling too", Palangi fans know they can look forward to new material being developed. What could be the next step for Palangi???"It has been a blessing. My music has a special connection with the fans who love it most. I've been told it's helped them through hard times in their lives and that I have been a positive inspiration to them. I believe there are tough challenges in our of lives that we must face and being able for my music to have that effect, it's all I could ask for out of it. The personal interaction with fans is so important to me, so I enjoy the stories I hear. Growing up, I dealt with childhood medical issues and learning to adapt and overcome challenges that somehow let me reroute illness into a strength and gave me the passion, determination and will not give up. ” Frank says.Palangi continues to create new buzz with a growing fan base sharing the stages across the North East U.S with regional and national acts from 3 Doors Down, Aaron Lewis (Staind), FUEL, TRAPT, Powerman 5000, Candlelight Red, Young Guns, HURT, HEDPE to Prospect Hill, Veer Union, Bad Axis, Jess Malin (Former D-Generation singer), Sirsy, Deluka, Silversyde, IM5, Weaving the Fate and including festivals like the UPROAR winning the 2013 Ernie Ball Saratoga, NY opening for Alice in Chains/Jane's Addiction.
