Dom Flemons, also known as the American Songster, is a truly unique musician. A founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, he makes American string music. His most recent release is Prospect Hill: The American Songster Omnibus. It's an exploration of historic sounds, instruments, and musical styles. Dom is a true student of the history of American music and he's a walking encyclopedia of not just songs but the stories behind the songs as well. I had a chance to chat with him about his music at a music festival recently. I got to see him perform as well which is always a pleasure. We had a great conversation about his music. I hope ya dig it!
On this episode of our mini-series Sepia Tones, Dr. William Turner and Dr. Ted Olson welcome Dom Flemons, a renowned performer of American folk music and a founding member of The Carolina Chocolate Drops. Citing a variety of musical influences—including the legendary Howard Armstrong and the inimitable Elizabeth Cotten—Flemons shares his journey into becoming a tradition-bearer of old-time music and demonstrates the subtleties of rural black musical styles he's learned along the way. Dom Flemons is a founding member of the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, a two-time Emmy nominee, and the creative force behind a number of solo works including, most recently, Black Cowboys and Prospect Hill: The American Songster Omnibus. He is a multi-instrumentalist whose repertoire spans the history of American folklore, ballads, and tunes.Dr. William Turner is a long-time African American studies scholar and retired Distinguished Professor of Appalachian Studies and Regional Ambassador from Berea College. He was also a research assistant to Roots author Alex Haley and co-editor of the groundbreaking Blacks in Appalachia. What is at the root of violence in the United States? In this episode, we speak to people with close connections to gun violence about what they think causes it and talk about the impact of seeing great wealth while living in poverty. The richest 1% in the US controls about 40% of the nation's wealth. Could this be why the U.S. has more murders than other wealthy nations? We spoke to people from neighborhoods impacted by violence - some who have committed violent acts in the past - and people who are trying to disrupt the cycle about how we got here. Guests include Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, Kendra Van de Water and Yané of YEAH Philly, Kempis 'Ghani' Songster and William Bentley of Youth Art & Self-empowerment Project (YASP) and more!

Today's guest, Dom Flemons, co-founded the Carolina Chocolate Drops in 2005, and on their third studio album, Genuine Negro Jig they won the 2010 Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album. His 2018 album, Black Cowboys, recorded on the Smithsonian Folkways label, was nominated for a 2019 Grammy in the same category, and he has been nominated for two Emmys. Most recently he was awarded the prestigious 2020 United States Artist Fellowship and his 2014 album , Prospect Hill with Omnibus Records, has been re-issued.He has adopted the moniker "American Songster," and this was not him just claiming a title that sounded cool. Nope, its earned. not only by way of the awards and high-praise he has received for his contributions to 20+ album collaborations, along with his seven solo albums, but also because he puts in the work researching what he plays. We learn so much from Don in this episode, not the least being that he has let his interest in his heritage and the music he has identified with over the years pull him into some very fruitful rabbit holes. So yes, he's a historian, but he's also allowed his ongoing education about cultures in which he's identified, as well as about the music, it's origins stories and about the instruments used to create such music. And of course, he's become a master on many of those instruments over the years. Martin and Des welcome golf's premier musical parodist, Sam Harrop, to the podcast. Sam is well known for writing songs that capture the pain and pleasure experienced by Tour professionals trying to win golf tournaments. Over the last year Sam has produced songs for both the US Open and the Ryder Cup, only this month he performed some songs at the PGA show in Orlando. However, Sam is more than just a musician, he is a keen observer/fan of the game of golf despite his own admission of stalled progress in his game improvement plan. Find out where Sam has played, where he would like to play, his dream fourball, which tour players have interacted with him about his songs, and enjoy Sam correcting Martin on some failed research (Des certainly enjoyed it). Check out Sam's work on his You Tube channel and interact with the podcast via twitter @ITFOG_podcast
I'm devoting the show to an interview with someone I've known for many years and consider to be a very special human being. He's a husband, a devoted father, an activist and eloquent and outspoken speaker on the subject of “death by incarceration”. He also just happens to be a returning citizen. Kempis “Ghani” Songster was a juvenile lifer, sentence to spend the rest of his life behind the walls of a maximum-security prison at the age of 15. He was released in 2017 at the age of 45 as the result of a U.S. Supreme Court decision that found his sentence and that of around 200 hundred other juvenile lifers – unconstitutional. https://impactjustice.org/healing-futures/https://amistadlaw.org/

Salvation Meeting (31) - 13th December 2020 (Advent 3) This meeting, the 31st in the series produced for Fortress Radio in 2020, marks the 3rd Sunday of Advent. In a world that needs Jesus more than ever before Christians are praying for the world to turn to its Saviour as we prepare to celebrate His birth. The meeting has some great Salvation Army songs, Songster and Singing Company music and one of the greatest brass band pieces ever composed, from the pen of Eric Ball. Of course, we are also preparing ourselves for Christ's return - the Second Coming - or Second Advent, as I refer to it. We look at Isaiah's prophecy and are left with the words of Major Joy Webb's beautiful song "Come into our World - NOW, Lord Jesus"

On this episode of the Life in the Carolinas podcast, Carl caught up with Dom Flemons at the Carolina Bible Camp Bluegrass Festival in Mocksville, North Carolina. Dom was born and raised in Arizona, where his family has had a long and storied history. He moved to North Carolina because of his alignment with the musical and cultural heritage of the region. Being invited to participate in the Black Banjo Gathering in 2005 was a catalyst for his musical career. Through Joe Thompson and other songsters who had been creating music in the “gray areas” between genres, Dom began to learn more about the larger African-American folk tradition and his passion for telling the historical narrative increased. Dom is deeply connected to his cultural roots and he abides in the rich traditions of African-American folk, country, and cowboy music. In addition to traveling across the U.S. to share his unique and enduring music, “The American Songster” sees himself as a representative of U.S. and African-American history when he travels abroad. No matter where he plays, he desire is to spark cultural memories for the audience, reminding them of things they didn’t know they had forgotten. He wants others to experience their cultural heritage the same way that he has. Dom is a Grammy-award winner, a member Country Music Hall of Fame class of 2018, and Emmy-award nominee. For people considering getting into music, Dom recommends educational programs and summer camps that will immerse you in the art and provide connections for your musical growth. The cowboy is an icon of American culture. But the popular image of the white cowboy skews our perception of what kind of Americans did—and do—cowboying work. The American West after the Civil War was a dynamic and ethnically diverse place. As many as a quarter of the cowboys during the frontier era were African Americans. Remembering these Americans is crucial to understanding the west as a region and the United States as a country. As author Mike Searles stated in a 2010 NPR interview , “Many people see the West as the birthplace of America. If they only see it as the birthplace of white America, it means basically that all other people are interlopers—they’re not part of what makes an American.” In this season of American Songster Radio , Dom looks back to the Old West to uncover the African American roots of the American cowboy. Through a mix of personal essays, live conversation, and music performance, he traces the black history of the west from the Civil War through the struggle
Kim Wilson speaks with formerly incarcerated activist Kempis “Ghani” Songster about the black liberation group MOVE in the second part of episode 29. (Listen to Part 1 here). MOVE's Philadelphia home was bombed by a police helicopter in 1985. The attack killed eleven people—including five children—and resulted in the destruction of 65 houses in the neighborhood. There were only two survivors. Ghani and Kim also talk about plans to rename a block of North 59th Street for Mayor Wilson Goode—Philadelphia’s first black mayor, who designated the organization as a terrorist group and who pushed for the police attack. Correction: We misstated the name of the street renamed for Mayor Wilson Goode. The renamed street was North 59th Street, not Osage Avenue. We regret the error. Kim Wilson interviews formerly incarcerated activist Kempis "Ghani" Songster in part one of Beyond Prisons episode 29. In 1987, at the age of 15, Ghani was imprisoned for homicide. Despite his age, he was certified as an adult, convicted of first degree murder, and given a mandatory life sentence without parole, or what is increasingly known today as death by incarceration. Thus, he became one of America’s many juvenile lifers/condemned children. While in prison, he developed and facilitated programs to help people behind the walls with him, as well as programs to help people on the outside. He also co-founded outside organizations such as The Redemption Project and Ubuntu Philadelphia, and is a founding member of Right To Redemption, which helped launch Philadelphia’s Coalition to Abolish Death By Incarceration (CADBI). After 30 years of incarceration, Ghani was released from prison at the age of 45. Since his release, he has joined the staff at the Amistad Law Project, a grassroots abolitionist law collective working for the release of others, as they fight to end the sentencing of human beings to life without parole/death by incarceration and to abolish prison industrial complex. He has also joined the membership of Ecosocialist Horizons. Ghani continues to organize actively for healing justice and a more livable planet. Support our show and join us on Patreon. Host and KYW Newsradio community affairs reporter Cherri Gregg asks the burning questions about healing communities following trauma. Homicides are up about six-percent in Philadelphia and there have been more than 800 shootings city wide this year. But many for those who survive the violence, there can be scars that are both visible and invisible. Trauma from violence can change a victim's brain causing post traumatic stress disorder. Many times the victims and perpertrators of violence are from the same community and, in some cases, the same family. Panelists this week include Dr. Ted Corbin, co-creator of Healing Hurt People at Drexel University, Kempis Songster, co-founder of the Redemption Project and Chantay Love, founder of Every Murder is Real Healing Center. This weekend Songster is hosting a community healing titled, "Ubuntu Philadelphia," brining together those who have committed acts of violence with families of victims. The Newsmaker of the week is the Dixie Humming Birds. Band manager and bass singer Ira Tucker, Jr. discusses the history and the future of the groundbreaking group. Founded before World War II, the group endured Jim Crow, de-segregation, do-wop, disco and more to become a major influence on R&B and beyond. The Grammy winners have been named a "National Treasure" and are featured in the Smithsonian Museum of African American History, Art and Culture. Tucker discusses the group's 90 years on stage and the next generation of gospel rock stars keeping the torch aflame. They are part of a year long celebration that kicked off last month. Finally, the Changemaker of the week is the Danny DeGennaro Foundation. Founded to honor the legacy of the late Danny DeGennaro, a songwriter and musician from Bucks County, the non-profit mentors young artists, poets and musicians. This month they will hold a fundraising concert. Scholarship recipient, mentee and concert performer Katelyn Cryan speaks about their upcoming event. For tickets CLICK HERE. The fourth episode of the Inside-Out Podcast features world-famous entertainer Nick Cannon. Nick is best known from popular television shows such as NBC's America's Got Talent, MTV's Wild and Out, and movies such as Drumline and Chi-raq. Nick recently spent a week at the Inside-Out Instructor Training Institute sponsored by The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program. Nick talks about his journey as educator, his heart for justice, and his passion to tell stories from those at the margins of society. Also in this episode, you'll hear a spoken-word piece called Lessons from the Geese, recited by Kempis "Ghani" Songster. Ghani was recently released from Graterford Prison after serving 30 years. The Inside-Out podcast is hosted Dave Krueger from the Inside-Out Center located at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Episode Guide 1:30 Tyrone Werts Describes Inside-Out in 60 Seconds The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program facilitates dialogue and education across profound social differences. Inside-Out courses bring traditional college students and incarcerated students together in jails and prisons for semester-long learning. These courses ignite enthusiasm for learning, help students find their voice, and challenge students to consider what good citizenship requires. Since it began in 1997, Inside-Out has grown into an international network of more than 800 trained instructors from across the U.S. and several countries. Correctional and higher education institutions have partnered to create opportunities for more than 30,000 "inside" and "outside" students to move beyond the walls that separate them. Inside-Out generates social change through transformative education. We are more than a program. We are changing the world. 2:27 Nick Cannon Discusses the Inside-Out Instructor Training Nick Cannon first encountered Inside-Out as a student of Dr. Bahiyyah Muhammad of Howard University. Dr. Muhammad teaches courses at the D.C. Jail, which combine incarcerated students and students from Howard. In January 2018, Inside-Out facilitated its 52nd Instructor Training Institute. This training was held partly at the Pendle Hill Retreat Center and partly at the State Correctional Institution - Graterford, both located near Philadelphia. The training was facilitated by Ella Turenne, Lori Pompa, and the men of the Graterford Think Tank. Since 2004, Inside-Out has trained 830 educators from around the world, and the think tank at Graterford has trained more than three quarters of them. Nick Cannon was among the educators, who attend this training and he agreed to share his experiences on the podcast. 19:48 Ghani's Meditation on Lesson from the Geese In this last segment, you will hear from Kempis "Ghani" Songster. Ghani was sentenced to life with out parole when he was only 15 years old. On December 28, 2017, Ghani came home from Graterford Prison after serving 30 years. His release came in the aftermath of a Supreme Court decision, which declared it to be unconstitutional for juveniles to be sentenced to life without parole. Prior to his release, Ghani was an active leader in the Graterford Think Tank. While co-faciliting trainings and community workshops, he frequently took on the role of "the closer." He would often recite a poem or offer a meditation that captured the essence of the lessons learned during the day's gathering. As a gifted orator, and a man of deep spiritual insight, his closing words would often stir the imagination, and inspire people to persevere in the struggle for a more just and humane world. Here's Ghani reciting and interpreting a story he once heard called Lessons From the Geese. Ghani recently received tickets from Philadelphia Eagles safety, Malcolm Jenkins, to attend the Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis. Read the ESPN article here. Young banjo players Jerron Paxton and Kaia Kater hail from places that are pretty far removed from the American South. But as they learned their instruments and connected with banjo mentors, they found old-time music well beyond its reputed home region. Paxton and Kater both started out playing bluegrass music. “I was a little fat boy in Compton with a straw hat and overalls trying to be like Earl Scruggs,” Paxton recalls. The popularity of bluegrass made it easy to find, even in California. The same held true in Kater’s hometown, Toronto, Canada. But for each of them learning Scruggs-style picking was just a gateway drug. Soon, Paxton and Kater were asking themselves the same question that motivates many old-time music revivalists: what else does the banjo sound like? To take up this question, Kater traveled from her native Canada to the heart of the North Carolina mountains. “I went to the Swannanoa Gathering, which is a fantastic, fantastic camp. And I was really influenced by

When Dom Flemons visited a legendary fried chicken joint in Nashville, inspiration struck him like a wave of cayenne heat:
When Dom Flemons first came across the story of African American songster Gus Cannon, one fact took him by surprise. "[Gus Cannon] was a blackface performer, but he was a black man," Flemons says, recalling his initial reaction. "How can this be? That you can have an African American man be a part of a type of entertainment that, when I’d read about it in books, they would say that it was demeaning to black people?" Dom pursued this question in his own historical research and eventually published an article on Cannon for Oxford American magazine (" Can You Blame Gus Cannon? " published in the fall of 2013). His account of Cannon’s life reveals a performer who manages to subvert stereotypes, even while working within the limitations set by a dominant culture. When Flemons plays songs from Cannon’s repertoire in concert, he often begins with a version of Cannon’s life story. "[Blackface minstrelsy] was the very first international phenomenon for American popular entertainment," Flemons
When Dom Flemons was in the studio making his album Prospect Hill , the engineer made a casual comment that pushed the material in an unexpected direction. “Maybe you should sell some of those beats to a hip-hop artist!” the engineer quipped.
In 2005, Laurent Dubois had an encounter that would spark his transformation from a historian with a banjo to a historian of the banjo. It was an unusual example of the instrument that began to deepen his curiosity—a Haitian artifact that had languished for most of its life in a museum collection.
The young folk musician Jerron Paxton defies easy categorization. He grew up in a west coast metropolis, but his family and community adhered to customs from the rural south. And, like a number of people in Los Angeles with Louisiana roots, he inherited a combination of African-American, American Indian, and Jewish heritage. Paxton plays acoustic music that reflects these origins, with a focus on solo fiddle, guitar, and banjo. He also has a passion for telling his family’s story: People don’t know who I am, so I usually tell the history of my people and where I come from. Specific history about my great-grandfather and great-grandmother on down to me. I almost feel like an ambassador of the culture. It gives me a tremendous amount of joy to know that the things and the people I grew up with -- I can pass on the lessons they taught me and the culture they’ve given me. On episode 11 of American Songster Radio , host Dom Flemons speaks with Paxton about the formative experience of
The birth of the Carolina Chocolate Drops at the 2005 Black Banjo Gathering at Appalachian State University has become the stuff of folk music legend. “Of course it was an academic event,” Dom Flemons notes of the conference, “but it was also based on the idea of confirming that you weren’t the only one out there.” Once launched, the Drops’ music spread like wildfire. With it emerged a new public appreciation of the African American roots of old-time, bluegrass, and country music.
What makes a song a folk song, anyway? One familiar answer is that a folk song is a song without an author. Folk song scholars even have a name for the theory that some songs emerge without any one person composing them. They call it "communal creation."

Dom Flemons and Martin Simpson have worked together since 2014, when the pair received a joint commission from the English Folk Dance and Song Society. Jake Fussell didn’t have to look far for musical inspiration in his home state of Georgia. Even before he picked up a guitar, he was surrounded by some of the region’s most storied performers and committed documentarians. Fussell grew up in the town of Columbus, GA, the son of parents whose passion was studying, teaching, and presenting regional culture. For Fussell, an American folk song like “Raggy Levy” isn’t just an archival find. It’s a part of his lived experience.
Meet Bill Ferris On the first Sunday of every month, Bill Ferris attended an African-American church on the farm where he grew up. Over time Ferris, a white child, became a routine presence at the church. He especially loved participating in the church’s communal singing. "I learned the hymns, and I just felt very emotionally close to that world," Ferris tells American Songster Radio host Dom Flemons.
