On this edition of Parallax Views, Vince McMahon, the former chairman and CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), was the most powerful man in all of professional wrestling (or, as he likes to call it, "sports entertainment"). Now though McMahon is completely out of WWE after horrific allegations of sex trafficking and abuse of a former employee, Janel Grant. It's not the first time controversy has follow McMahon or WWE. There's also the case of Rita Chatterton, a former WWE referee who accused McMahon of rape, and the ring boys scandal, in which WWE employees Mel Phillips and Terry Garvin (as well as Pat Patterson) were accused of being involved in a pedophile sex ring within the company. In lieu of the latest accusations, I reached out to Josie Riesman, author of the book Ringmaster: Vince McMahon and the Unmaking of America, to discuss McMahon and the wrestling empire he built over the years as well as how it relates to issues like robber baron-style capitalism and labor exploitation. We'll also, of course, discuss the sex scandals mentioned above as well as diving into the early history of Vince McMahon, who initially grew up in poverty with an abusive stepfather. Moreover, we'll delve into the relationship between Vince and his biological father Vince McMahon Sr. and how the book is also about father/son relationships. Other issues discussed include: - Vince McMahon Sr. (Vince's father) and the FBI tapes in which he threatens pro wrestler Dr. Jerry Graham - The issue of "independent contractor" status in pro wrestling and how it could be seen as labor exploitation - The wrestling term "kayfabe" and why Josie believe the concept needs to be studied outside of a pro wrestling cotnext; Josie's concept of neokayfabe, omerta in pro wrestling, and the "protect the business" dictum - Tom Cole and the ring boys scandal - Vince McMahon's wife, Linda McMahon - And much, much more!

Since we want everyone to be able to learn from our Patreon series on the 1992 "Titangate" sex and drug scandals in WWE, want to be able to direct everyone to the shows, and don't want to give anyone the idea that we're trying to make money off of the awful new lawsuit against WWE, we're releasing all four Titangate shows for free. Permanently. We're really proud of the work we did on these, and we hope that everyone can learn from them.---Content warning: By necessity of covering this topic, though it is not the sole focus, this episode contains discussion of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and child sexual abuse. If you have any concerns that this content may be triggering or otherwise upsetting to you, then skipping this episode may be advisable. It's June [2022], and you know what that means: Time for a new Patreon-exclusive deep dive. This time, it's part 3 of a series on what became known as Titangate, the overarching collection of scandals that hit the WWF in 1992. The topics include:A Current Affair covering the scandals, which included, at the last minute, a letter that Murray Hodgson sent Vince McMahon out of the blue looking for work…while he was suing the WWF. Also: The production of the segment leads to an incredibly strange, forgotten Wrestling Observer item about someone claiming to be a former wrestler going to different shows with conflicting versions of what  he said Rita Chatterton told him about Vince McMahon…before disappearing. How the scandals begat John Arezzi and Vince Russo splitting as business partners, with both giving their sides in material that we didn't have when we did the “Vince Russo Origins” show a few years ago.John Arezzi and Bill Kunkle writing about their memories of Mel Phillips' red flags going back to the mid-1970s.Sid Justice getting suspended for cheating on a drug test.Steve Planamenta word vomiting to Mike Mooneyham about the successes and failures of the drug testing program so far.Lee Cole accusing the WWF of trying to get him sent to prison.Tom Zenk and Jim Ross's thoughts on Titangate, including Zenk revealing for the first and only time that he left the WWF over a vaguely-described incident of sexual misconduct, as well as an overly glib Barry Orton interview where he goes off on Tom and Lee Cole.Vince McMahon benefitting from how many different stories were being shoved into one overarching “WWF scandals” box.The WWF repeatedly airing matches with Mel Phillips doing ring announcing during this period. All that and much more on the latest installment of a series that's become increasingly relevant in 2022 over the last few weeks.Timestamps:0:00:00 Week of April 27, 19920:44:06 Week of May 4, 19921:38:52 Weeks of May 11 & May 18, 19922:08:36 Week of May 25, 19923:14:58 Weeks of June 1 & June 8, 1992To support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron. Our 100 darkest moments in pop culture series concludes with a trio of scandals involving WWE head honcho Vince K. McMahon. Host Karl Stern takes a look at the assault of Rita Chatterton, the 1990s steroid trial, and the multiple payoffs scandal which, temporarily, removed him from power... only to come back richer. Vince McMahon is not only Teflon when it comes to scandals, he somehow escapes any karma and comes back more powerful and wealthy. A supervillain Lex Luthor would be proud of.

Tragedy struck this week when Jay Briscoe, one half of the Ring of Honor tag team champions, was killed in an auto accident just shy of his 39th birthday. Today, I speak candidly on Jamin Pugh, the man, and Jay Briscoe, the wrestler... the circumstances of the accident, a medical update on his two daughters who suffered terrible injuries in the wreck, why The Briscoes will go down as one of the all-time great tag teams, personal memories of some key moments in his career including his time in House of Glory, the controversial tweets that followed him around for his career, why The Briscoes never landed in WWE (and it has nothing to do with tweets) and the HYPOCRISY of Warner Brothers Discovery not allowing Tony Khan to pay tribute to Jay on AEW TV. And then... WE'VE GOT A TON OF NEWS on Vince McMahon's latest hush money payment as part of his settlement with Rita Chatterton... It was a sad week in the world of pro wrestling and episode 198 of No One's Ready For Wrestling discusses the tragic passing of Jay Briscoe. The details regarding the car accident. Going through the accomplishment that he contributed along with his brother in the pro wrestling world. My early memories on how Jay Briscoe got me into watching ROH at the time and watching him perform at Glory By Honor against Luke & PJ Hawx. What does this mean for the ROH Tag Team Titles? AEW reportedly wanted to do a Jay Briscoe tribute show on Dynamite, but Warner Bros. Discovery told them NO. Eddie Kingston will take on Jay White at Battle In The Valley. Match 7 of The Elite vs Death Triangle nearly didn't happen due to visa issues. Tony Khan reveals that he is interested in being part of WWE's sale process. Miyu Yamashita wants to wrestle more matches in AEW and some of the names I would love to see her face if that happens. Top Flight gets a shock win over The Young Bucks and what I think the idea is going to be involving the AEW Trios Championship. Bryan Danielson & Bandido put on an excellent match on Dynamite. Saraya & Toni Storm officially turn heel and what I think the idea is going to be with this heel turn. KUSHIDA makes his AEW Dynamite debut in a open challenge against Darby Allin for the TNT Championship. Hiroshi Tanahashi extends his contract with New Japan Pro Wrestling. A LOT of news regarding Vince McMahon (Feeling that he might return, the new SEC Filings, Another Lawsuit, and reaching a multi million dollar legal settlement with Rita Chatterton)! Adam Hopkins is gone from WWE after 25+ years with the company. Not only that, D-Von Dudley announces that he's no longer in WWE. Colby Corino is expected to sign with WWE. Update on Kevin Nash after his comments on his podcast left a lot of fans worried. WWE removing independent wrestling content on Peacock. Reason why WWE is making a change to the tag team titles. Is Naomi expected to return to WWE? Cody Rhodes officially announces that he'll be competing in the Royal Rumble and why I don't have a problem with this announcement. Bronson Reed makes his really good RAW in ring debut. More teases on RAW regarding The Hurt Business reuniting. Who is the number 1 contender for Austin Theory's United States Championship? Is there trouble brewing regarding Toxic Attraction on NXT? The SmackDown Tag Team Tournament officially begins to determine who will face The Usos for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship. The Firefly Funhouse makes its return to WWE and what I believe is the different personas of the Bray Wyatt character. Finally, the drama involving Sami Zayn and The Bloodline (Mostly him & Roman Reigns!)! From FOX NEWS: "Former WWE chairman and CEO Vince McMahon, who announced his resignation and subsequent retirement over the summer following a barrage of misconduct allegations, is interested in making a comeback despite facing newly surfaced legal demands from two women alleging sexual misconduct, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. Documents reviewed by the news outlet revealed that McMahon received a letter from former wrestling referee Rita Chatterton on Nov. 3 demanding $11.75 million in damages following a three-decade-old accusation that McMahon raped her in a limousine. Her letter cites "years of ongoing depression, substance abuse, disordered eating, lost income, and overall a decreased quality of life." A separate demand emailed to McMahon's attorneys in November and reviewed by the Wall Street Journal accused McMahon of assaulting a former spa manager in 2011 at a California hotel. According to the report, she alleged the assault happened while McMahon was in town for a WWE event. She reported the incident to the resort at the time of the alleged assault, sources told the outlet. Spokesmen for WWE, the company's independent board members and McMahon declined to comment to The Wall Street Journal. McMahon's attorney did not respond to the outlet's request for comment. Sources with knowledge of McMahon's comments told the paper that the former WWE CEO is refusing the pay settlements to the two women and that he intends to return to the company after stepping down in June. "He has said that he received bad advice from people close to him to step down and that he now believes the allegations and investigations would have blown over had he stayed, these people said," the WSJ report read. WWE did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment. McMahon announced his retirement in July, adding that his daughter, Stephanie, would take over as co-CEO along with current WWE President Nick Khan. According to a previous report from The Wall Street Journal, McMahon was under investigation from the company's board for an alleged secret $3 million payment to a former employee he supposedly had an affair with. The board's investigation into the issue began in April, when other nondisclosure agreements over misconduct claims from former workers against McMahon and head of talent relations, John Laurinaitis, were revealed, according to the report. McMahon has previously denied the allegations made by Chatterton." Kris & David are back with yet another episode of Between the Sheets, and we're joined by one of our Patrons in Danny Kuchler (@DJDKooks) to discuss the week that was July 20-26, 2008, which he selected as a $50 Patreon pick.Danny sat in with us as we talked about WWE which was switching to a TV-PG product, which is funny to look at now that they may be switching Raw back to TV-14. We also talked about the Great American Bash PPV (which Bix attended live) RAW, and SmackDown (which Danny attended live), featuring an awesome Edge/Vickie Guerrero segment. Kris & David are back this week with Keith Harris (@glasgowkjh) to discuss the week-plus that was July 12-19, 2005, which Keith requested as a $100 Patreon pick.We start off talking about WWE and the backlash from the Muhammad Hassan "terrorist" angle with The Undertaker that aired hours after the 7/7 attack in London and how that blew up in their faces, causing them to backtrack heavily. We also talk about SmackDown & Raw, which is always wild to look back at in this era, as well as Triple H gaining more office duties, Earl Hebner getting fired, Matt Hardy & Lita appearing on Byte This in an infamous moment, and much more.We then go to Japan where we start off with Shinya Hashimoto's funeral and then move on to Destiny, the massive NOAH Tokyo Dome show that Keith attended, which was the reason why he picked this week. We talk about all the matches and other happenings from the show, which featured the legendary Kenta Kobashi-Kensuke Sasaki match and the final Toshiaki Kawada-Mitsuharu Misawa singles match. We also talk about some of the other shows Keith went to, plus all of the major results and news for the week.Next up is Mexico & Puerto Rico, where we talk about a very hot period for CMLL, a startup promotion in Puerto Rico that fell apart before they ran a show, and a crazy Bruiser Brody Memorial Show for the WWC.Then we go back to the United States for some Summer of Punk in Ring of Honor — which Dave Meltzer was getting tired of, Charlie Haas returning to JAPW, some other big indie shows, and more.We then close with TNA, which was in a holding pattern of sorts until starting on Spike TV, so we talk about that plus a very interesting NO SURRENDER PPV and much more.A long, but very fun show, so listen now!!!!!!!!!!!Timestamps:0:00:00 WWE2:05:06 Eurasia: Shinya Hashimoto funeral, NOAH, AJPW, NJPW, DDT, Dragon Door, Dragon Gate, Hustle, Michinoku Pro, Osaka Pro, Bikkuri Pro, & FWA4:06:39 Classic Commercial Break4:11:25 Halftime4:23:31 Latin America: AAA, CMLL, IWRG, Monterrey, GladiatorCW, WWC, & IWAPR4:46:02 Other USA: Ballpark Brawl, ROH, JAPW, Steve Karel, IWAEC, Iron Ring, NWA Anarchy, IWAMS, & FCW (Los Angeles)5:17:12 TNA5:09:47 Patreon Preview: Someone is trying to play both sides of Rita Chatterton's allegations against Vince McMahon to different TV showsTo support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron. Kris & David are back with another episode of BTS, discussing the week-plus that was June 28-July 5, 1995. We begin with WCW, as Kevin Sullivan has replaced Ric Flair as the head booker, and we go over the reasons why that happened, with Flair basically having no one to blame but himself. We also talk Eric Bischoff's interview on Chet Coppock's NewSport Talk, which is extremely interesting to look at with hindsight, plus we have the Dave Sullivan's dream date with the Diamond Doll's and Vader entering the Dungeon of Doom.Next, we go international, talking about wrestlers in Japanese politics, Kazuo Yamazaki joining New Japan, Ultimo Dragon & Chris Jericho tearing it up in WAR, Satoru Sayama training a new Tiger Mask, Winners losing his mask in Mexico, and so much more.Next, we return to the United States, where we talk about ECW's first internet convention, featuring a newsworthy house show in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, plus a wild Hardcore Heaven at the ECW Arena, not to mention the 2-hour fan Q&A at the hotel, leads to some great quotes. We also have the SMW/USWA feud heating up in both promotions, including a comparison of how Mark Curtis cut promos in each promotion during the feud. We also talk about one of the biggest wrestling shows of the year that you would never expect. We close with the WWF, where we talk about their lawsuit against Matt Borne regarding his use of the Doink gimmick, Jerry Lawler visiting Dr. Isaac Yankem's office for the first time, Jeff Jarrett's With My Baby Tonight" music video making its debut, and Dave Meltzer questioning the sincerity of the WWF regarding a video feature on their work with the Special Olympics.Another fine episode of Between the Sheets, so you'd better not miss out!!!Timestamps:0:00:00 WCW1:27:46 Eurasia: Japanese politics, AJPW, NJPW, WAR, IWA Japan, Tiger Mask IV debut announcement, AJW, & CWA1:47:18 Latin America: AAA, CMLL, & IWAS Venezuela tour2:06:33 Classic Commercial Break2:09:51 Halftime2:27:33 Other USA: ECW, Fake Big Bubba Rogers, SMW, USWA, Deep South (MS), Ken Resnick, NWC, Mike Tenay, ISW, & Ultimate Warrior3:42:23 WWF4:15:17 Patreon Preview: Someone is trying to play both sides of Rita Chatterton's allegations against Vince McMahon to different TV showsTo support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron.
