The Autonomous Motion Systems (AMoS) is the robotics research cluster of the Artificial Intelligence Innovation Centre, focused on developing the mathematical and engineering foundations needed to make unmanned aerial vehicles, such as multirotor drones, robotic arms, humanoids, quadrupeds and wheeled robots, behave reliably and safely in the real world. We are joined by Dr Afraz Subratti and Cade Coker, the Co-Investigators of AMoS to discuss, among other things: * some of the projects AMoS is focusing on; * what it means to have robots behave reliably; * how public trust can be developed to help robots and other advanced machines to be integrated into Caribbean life; and * the most important skills a student or budding engineer should develop if they want to pursue research or a career in robotics. Their approach uses physics-based world models rather than pure data-driven learning, ensuring deterministic behavior and bounded operations. This represents a significant advancement over previous AI approaches that couldn't guarantee safe operation in the high-stakes environment of space.3. Vision for Space-Based Manufacturing and Resource Utilization: The long-term vision extends beyond debris removal to creating orbital recycling facilities that can break down captured satellites and rebuild them into new spacecraft using existing materials in orbit. Additionally, the company plans to harvest propellant from lunar ice, splitting it into hydrogen and oxygen for rocket fuel, which could kickstart a lunar economy by providing economic incentives for moon-based operations while supporting the growing satellite constellation infrastructure.4. Unique Space Technology Development Through Student Programs: Borger and his co-founder gained unprecedented experience by launching six AI-controlled robotic arms to space through NASA's student rocket programs while still undergraduates. These missions involved throwing and catching objects in microgravity using deep reinforcement learning trained in simulation and tested on Earth. Space Manufacturing Supply Chain Constraints: The space industry faces significant manufacturing bottlenecks with 24-week lead times for space-grade components and limited suppliers serving multiple companies simultaneously. This creates challenges for scaling production - Orbital Robotics needs to manufacture 30 robotic arms per year within a few years. They've partnered with manufacturers who previously worked on Blue Origin's rocket engines to address these supply chain limitations and achieve the scale necessary for their ambitious deployment timeline.7. Emerging Space Economy Beyond Communications: While current commercial space activities focus primarily on communications satellites (with SpaceX Starlink holding 60% market share) and Earth observation, new sectors are emerging including AI data centers in space and orbital manufacturing. The convergence of AI, robotics, and space technology is enabling more sophisticated autonomous operations, from predictive maintenance of rocket engines using sensor data to complex orbital maneuvering and satellite servicing that was previously impossible with traditional control methods.

As AI continues to evolve, the line between human and machine is blurring in the art world. One artist has taught a robot to copy her brush strokes so they can paint together. D.O.U.G. is a machine created by Sougwen Chung. The artist has built and programmed this AI system to work alongside them, creating paintings together. Over the years, it has learned to mimic Chung's brush strokes. It's an exploration of how humans and machines can collaborate. Simonida Pavicevic is co-founder and curator of HOFA Gallery (House of Fine Arts) which represents Chung. She says you can't separate the artist from her machines. “So Sougwen managed to do something very impressive where she merges the robots with her work. They don't work separately. [...] So it's a teamwork. [...] And she had over ten years of research (into) how to teach them and to teach them to follow her brainwaves, her own ideas, and her own work,” she explains. For galleries, trying to convince people to purchase a digital artwork can be an uphill battle. Elio D'Anna, co-founder and CEO of HOFA Gallery, says physical objects are the key to getting people to invest in digital art. “The big challenge with digital art so far has been how do I collect? How can I have it in my house? And with this exhibition, we wanted to focus a lot on that as well, [...] growing the awareness of this new medium and showing that it can also be collected in a both physical and digital way,” he explains. Digital art is still in its early stages, and it's had a difficult beginning. But experts expect the market to grow. But what role will AI play in creating art as the technology evolves? The smart money is on it being another tool in the artist's paintbox. “In anything creative, there's always a lot of error, going back and exploring and doing it again and so on. And a lot of this is for sure being replaced by machine learning and by AI systems that are able to help you speed up that process and to achieve to where you want to go,” says D'Anna. Teaching robots how to recognize and handle unknown items remains a key hurdle to enabling automation of a much wider range of routine tasks.But researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology may have come up with a relatively simple solution: they outfitted an ordinary glove with hundreds of tiny, inexpensive sensors, then used the way its wearers handled things to build a data set of how future robotic arms should respond to a variety of objects.The scalable tactile glove, or STAG, is a knitted glove laminated with a conductive polymer and threaded with a conductive thread, which resulted in 550 different sensors that captured the pressure applied by a human grip as it interacted with an object.A neural network then processed the signals, allowing it to identify and analyze 26 common objects, from a soda can and scissors to a pen and a mug.Using the data set in combination with other systems, such as image recognition or computer vision, could ultimately give robotic arms a more intuitive understanding of unfamiliar objects.MIT researchers noted that the glove is made with materials costing about $10, and that it also demonstrated how movements in one part of the hand corresponded to movements elsewhere — a potential breakthrough for prosthetics design.

Sigrid Brell-Cokcan & Johannes Braumann are the founding directors of the Association for Robots in Architecture whose goal is to make industrial robots accessible for creative industry, artists, designers and architects by sharing ideas, research results and technological developments. Founded in December 2010, Robots in Architecture is an open platform engaged in applied research, software and hardware development, and “robot pedagogics” – and in the question: how soon will robots revolutionize architecture? In 2011, Robots in Architecture presented KUKA | prc (“parametric robot control”), a plugin for Grasshopper that enables robot control from within architectural software. Sigrid and Johannes pursue the association’s goals through workshops, lectures, and via the international conference Rob|Arch, which first ran in 2012. In addition to steering the Association for Robots in Architecture, Sigrid Brell-Cokcan is one of the founding partners of II Architects Istanbul/ Vienna. She has previously worked with Coop Himmelblau, Frank Gehry, Peter Cook and Bollinger & Grohmann on projects such as Kunsthaus Graz, MARTA Herford and BMW World Munich. Ms Brell-Cokcan has been teaching design, geometry and fabrication classes in the field of architecture and industrial design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the University of Technology Vienna. Her current research focuses on the design and computation of large scale freeform structures, computer aided manufacturing and design immanent robotic fabrication. Association for Robots in Architecture co-founder Johannes Braumann is the main developer of KUKA|prc (parametric robot control). His research on robotic fabrication has been presented at many international peer-reviewed conferences and published in research journals and books. Additionally, Braumann teaches both technical classes and design studios at TU Vienna. He is a graduate of Master Building Science and Technology, and a fellow of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
