Certain it is that many dated their first serious impressions from that evening.

His talent, as a preacher, being rather of the reasoning and discriminating character, the almost uniform first report was, that he was not eloquent. So in the usual acceptation of the word, perhaps he was not. But if eloquence consists in the power of holding attention, and deeply impressing human minds, then was Mr. Nettleton eloquent, and at times, beyond almost any man we have ever known.

In this conversation from my archive, chatted with Matt Nettleton about the importance of practice and the danger of over practicing. Have you ever done something for the first time, without prior knowledge and been able to achieve success? If so, you're truly unique. Most humans find themselves meeting new challenges with a series of frustrations and failures. Imagine an infant as they decide to walk for the first time, they stand up then they stagger and inevitably they fall. To become consistent walkers they repeat the stand-stagger-fall cycle for a few weeks or months. This pattern of stand-stagger-fall is repeated throughout our lives. Over time we learn that practicing tasks makes eventual success more likely. We also learn that preparation is a bit of a grind certainly not enjoyable and nearly always hard work. But learning to effectively gain new skills and improve performance with existing skills is the key task we all face as adults. So, we learn to practice. People have this idea about sales and sales people and what sales people do and how, but they forget that there is not a company that has ever existed without revenue. And that revenue never shows up magically. And those people that create the relationships and manage the relationships that generate revenue, they're salespeople who are probably the most honest traders out there. Because the salesperson tells people up front, “Hey, listen. I'm here to see if I can get you to buy something from me. You give me money and I give you a product or service.” And the more honest they are, and the more they do the right thing, the more likely they are to succeed.So why do you believe business is honorable? This is kind of an extension of why sales is honorable, but a lot of my clients are family owned businesses, two to 50 million in revenue. They just celebrated that employee's son graduating from college. That business is not just that service that they provide. They actually provide meaning and livelihood for their employees. A number were anxious, and a few in awful distress of soul, in one village. It was taken hold of by some ignorant, officious hands- and they were set to groaning and screaming, and alarmed all the village in my absence.

She describes how codependents often try to be the “hero” as a consequence to how they were raised to offer but not ask for help. She opens up about codependency in her own life and how it led to a pattern where she always wanted her friends to come to her but she never sought their help.  We turn our focus to grief and codependency. What is grief? The journey after losing a loved one/someone who meant a lot to you. The grieving process after the loss can be stalled by codependency since, as demonstrated by Kayla's experience, since we dive into patterns that inhibit our own grief.  Kayla recalls how she felt needed by her mother, took it upon herself to organize funeral services, and put her grief aside. Kayla shares how she often sees this type of behavior in her client going through the grief process as well as veterans, couples, etc. The consequences of these behaviors leads to anger, resentment, outbursts, and the grief coming up at inappropriate times with inappropriate people.  The initial steps Kayla suggests to resolve grief involves going to therapy, sharing our feelings, asking for help, and being more honest.  Thanks for coming on Kayla! In this episode, we zoom into the two key figures of the second great awakening, Asahel Nettleton and Charles Finney. Nettleton was of the "old way," much in the grain of Jonathan Edwards, believing that revival and conversion were sovereign works of God. Finney launched the "new way," which believed revival could be manufactured by man. Though Finney was reported to have 250,000 converts, history shows that most were illegitimate.
