Castle Rock, or The Pinnacle, dominates the upper valley of the Guyandotte River in Pineville, where Pinnacle and Rockcastle creeks converge. Once a favorite picnic spot, the extraordinary rock began to lose its importance as coal mining took center stage in the early 1900s. However, tourism has become a chief economic force in the region, and the castle is gaining attention again, according to Timmy Redden, executive director of the Wyoming County Convention and Visitors Bureau.  He says travelers from abroad, visitors to Twin Falls State Park, and motorists touring the Hatfield-McCoy Trails more frequently visit the rock, which rises behind the county visitor center and overlooks downtown Pineville.  State and local officials are now developing a management plan for the scenic rock and preparing to carefully open views masked by summer foliage. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots for September 23rd, 2021. A story for you optimists out there. An analysis by a consortium of researchers advising the CDC indicates the Delta surge looks like it's peaking. Which means cases and deaths should decline steadily now through the spring as long as there's not a big winter surge. The analysis was made by combining nine different mathematical models from different research groups. The optimistic model for the next six months also assumes a new and dangerous variant won't take hold. But the R.1 variant, which originated in Japan, has been identified at a Kentucky nursing home where it infected 45 residents and workers, many of whom were vaccinated. It has mutations that can improve “transmission, replication, and immune suppression.” The FDA gave the okay for extra shots of Pfizer vaccine for seniors and others at high risk. And it's a little amazing the FDA is functioning as well as it is, because there is no permanent head of that agency. 10 months after the election, the current administration has yet to name one. Public health experts are baffled why this would be the case given the situation we're in and insiders say staff at the agency is demoralized. The kids are in school, but when it comes to teachers and school staff, there are desperate shortages nationwide. Notes are going to parents saying, “we're hiring,” Principals are filling in as crossing guards, and of course, schools are moving back to online learning. COVID-19 has triggered a spike in retirements and resignations, for any number of reasons. Maybe those teachers are home drinking. Even though we hear so many people kvetching about the possible temporary side effects of getting vaccinated, they don't seem worried about pickling their bodies with alcohol. A new Harris Poll shows nearly 1 in 5 Americans is consuming an unhealthy amount of alcohol. If you don't know if you're a heavy drinker or not, it's defined as two heavy drinking days in a single week at least twice in the previous 30 days. And a "heavy drinking day" is four or more drinks for women and five or more drinks for men. In the United States cases were down 12%, deaths are up 36%, and hospitalizations are down 9% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since September 13. There are 9,757,275 active cases in the United States. With not all states reporting daily numbers, the five states with the greatest increase in per capita hospitalizations over 14 days are Vermont at 52%, Idaho 34%, Montana 33%, Ohio 31%, and West Virginia 28%. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots for September 21st, 2021.It is now official, at least according to the numbers from Johns Hopkins, COVID-19 has now killed as many Americans as the 1918-19 Spanish flu. 675,000 Americans died during the 1918 pandemic, in waves that played out over about two years. But back then there were no vaccines. It wasn't until the 30s researchers even understood influenza was caused by a virus and not a bacterium. Finally, some much needed good news for travel and tourism. The U.S. said it will allow foreigners to fly into the country this fall if they have vaccination proof and a negative COVID-19 test. That replaces a hodgepodge of rules that kept out non-citizens from countries that frankly, are doing better than the U.S. in containing outbreaks. The school mask fight may soon switch to a vaccine for kids fight. Pfizer said its vaccine works for children 5 to 11 and it will seek U.S. authorization for this age group soon. For elementary school-aged kids, Pfizer tested a much lower dose — a third of the amount that's in each shot given now. But after the second dose, the kids developed coronavirus-fighting antibody levels equal to that of teens and young adults getting regular-strength shots. Pfizer says the kid dosage also proved safe.Someone just got COVID in American Samoa. That's newsworthy because, it was their very first case. And even then it was a traveler from Hawaii. Believe it or not there are still countries and territories, mostly islands, that have yet to experience one case of COVID, including the Cook Islands, Saint Helena, the Federated States of Micronesia, Tonga, Tuvalu, and the Pitcairn Islands. Mostly the kinds of places where Survivor is filmed. No special treatment for the president of Brazil. He's against vaccinations and would not get vaccinated before attending this week's UN General Assembly in New York. Therefore, he was not allowed inside a New York City restaurant and was told he'd have to eat his pizza slice outside. Which he did. In the United States cases were down 8%, deaths are up 29%, and hospitalizations are down 8% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since September 13. There are 9,748,413 active cases in the United States. With not all states reporting daily numbers, the five states with the greatest daily number of deaths per capita are Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Idaho, and West Virginia. This is Vaccine 411, the latest coronavirus vaccine information for September 21st, 2021.It is now official, at least according to the numbers from Johns Hopkins, COVID-19 has now killed as many Americans as the 1918-19 Spanish flu. The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Knox, KY. Russell, KY. Scott, TN. Andrews, TX. Rockcastle, KY. Lewis, WV. Powell, KY. Perry, KY. Whitley, KY. And Lincoln, MT. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are West Virginia at 40.1%, Wyoming at 40.6%, and Idaho at 40.8%. A new Morning Consult/Politico poll shows 58% support them. 62% favor encouraging states to require vaccinations for all school employees; 60% support a mandate for most health care workers with no ability to opt out through regular testing; and 56% support the same rule for most federal workers and contractors. The mantra is the vaccines help keep infections from turning into serious COVID cases. But it does happen. In fact, the Office for National Statistics in England says those who were fully vaccinated accounted for 1.2% of all deaths involving Covid-19 in England so far this year. That number is low and is actually being promoted as proof the vaccines are effective. An international group of scientists including two FDA vaccine reviewers wrote in the science journal Lancet that the average person doesn't need a booster yet. Their review shows the shots are working well, even against Delta. The White House, which promised to “follow the science,” is continuing to follow a different science and is pressing forward with third shots as soon as later this month. The CDC says Americans should not travel to Afghanistan. Which leads to the obvious response, duh. But it's not because of that Taliban thing. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots for September 14th, 2021.In a heartbreaking illustration of maxed out hospitals, the staff in one north Alabama hospital contacted 43 others across three states looking for a specialty cardiac ICU bed for patient Ray DeMonia. Most were full with COVID patients, which Ray was not. He wound up in Meridian, Mississippi, about 170 miles away, where he died of a cardiac event shortly after arriving.Looks like Americans are okay with government vaccination mandates. Drikus Combrinck from Capicraft chose Enbridge as his stock pick of the day and Mark du Toit from Oyster Catcher Investments chose Nepi Rockcastle. Combrink said: "Enbridge is the largest oil or energy infrastructure play in North America, they have an 8,5% forward dividend yield. They have the monopoly as no one else is building pipelines." Duys said: "I'm going for Nepi Rockcastle, an Eastern European property group mainly in retail shopping centres. The share price has come under a lot of pressure recently and could be because Lighthouse is selling down their stake in order to take up their rights in Hammerson."

Nick Crail from Ashburton Investments chose Nepi Rockcastle as his stock pick of the day and Mia Kruger from Kruger International chose Apple. Crail said: "Neppy Rockcastle is my pick. It's a company in the property sector so if there's any definition of an unloved sector this would beit. They are very well capitalized so that's a good thing. They also have a conservative management team and I think geographically because they're in Eastern Europe in a growing environment where there isn't as much retail property as what we would have in SA internet penetration and online shopping is a lot less." Kruger said: "I'm going for Apple, despite the fact that the share price has now come down quite significantly it's not something that you feel like you have to sell. We think it's a good company and when you look at what they came to the market with last week it was different to how they normally came, they didn't launch a new iphone but the iphone is still more than 50% of their revenue. Other parts like the airpods, the watch etc has changed so much lately it's actually doubled in revenue over the last five years."
