There exists a curious tension at Roosters Brewing Company, one that few other breweries have to navigate in terms of both their identity, and their position within the UK beer market. On the one hand this is a resolutely contemporary brewery, creating modern IPAs as delicious and precise as the cask ales loved by locals it built its reputation upon. But there's also the fact that this is a three-decade old brewery, with a considerable legacy established by its previous owner, Sean Franklin, and its flagship beer, Yankee. It's a persistent problem, one that's always snapping at the heels of twin brothers, Tom and Ol Fozard—the commercial director and head brewer, respectively—who took on this considerable stewardship when, along with their dad, Ian, they acquired the brewery in 2011.Since the acquisition they have done their best to put their stamp on it, while also clinging to the story and substance that makes Roosters Brewery what it is today. They've achieved this through beers such as their best-selling IPA, Baby Faced Assassin, and by relocating the brewery from its original home in the town of Knaresborough to a new site, complete with an American-style taproom, on the outskirts of Harrogate, North Yorkshire. In 2023 they celebrated the brewery's 30th birthday in style, holding a beer festival at the brewery called Suds With Buds. They were joined by contemporaries from both sides of the Atlantic, and ably demonstrated that this is a brewery that more than holds its weight within the highly competitive British beer market. Please enjoy this bumper length interview with Tom and Ol, split into two parts for brevity. This is a candid, warts and all account of one of the UK's most interesting breweries, and a fascinating look at one that is navigating an industry under so much pressure, as it continually seeks to define itself within it.We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Loughran Brewers Select. Where were you a little over 30 years ago? As today's guests recall… England had failed to qualify for the World Cup, 2 Unlimited were Top of the Pops, Shane Warne had bowled the ‘Ball of the Century' and Rooster's Brewing Co has just hatched. And in doing so, forever changing the shape of beer in the UK. And in 2024, Rooster's Brewing Co is ramping up its limited release offering in 2024, with close to 50 different beers scheduled for production in addition to their year-round core range. The Harrogate-based brewery has mapped out their brewing schedule for the twelve months ahead, which includes several new recipes, the return of a few old favourites from the archives and a series of collaborations with some of the UK's most highly-regarded breweries. Rooster's will be brewing a mix of styles that will cover various pale ales, stouts, lagers, amber ales, and fruited beers across a range of ABV's. Some beers will be only available in cask, some keg and can only and others across all three package types. As with the whole of the brewery's core range, the overwhelming majority of the beers will be vegan friendly, while the lagers planned will also be gluten free. In this episode we speak to Tom Fozard, the brewery's commercial director, to discuss the plans for this year. We look back on the impact and influence that Rooster's founder Sean Franklin has had on the UK brewing industry, and also the way that Tom and his family have helped Rooster's evolve since taking on the business back in 2011.
Sean Franklin grew up in a large athletic family where all sports were accounted for, except soccer. That changed when the two-time MLS All Star picked soccer over basketball and discovered his natural passion for the game as a result. Franklin recalls high school as some of his best memories playing soccer while basking in a competitive high school rivalry, but it wasn't until he was called up to the U-20 Men's National Team camp that he realized he had the potential to play professionally. Tune in this week to hear more about Franklin's soccer journey where he received various accolades and played over 300 professional games in MLS. Bobby Boswell and his former D.C. United teammate, Franklin, also touch upon a variety of key soccer topics including the importance of team coercion, coming back from injury, and addressing racial inequality both on and off the field.
In the early 2010s, the LA Galaxy were far and away the premier franchise in MLS. Three MLS Cup titles in four years is a run of success that hasn't been replicated since, and playing significant roles in that winning stretch was Sean Franklin and AJ DeLaGarza. Fan favorites amongst the Galaxy diehards, the defensive pair were lauded for their tenacity, versatility, and reliability — features any manager would want on their back line. DeLaGarza recently signed a one-day contract with the Galaxy to announce his retirement, which gave him the opportunity for a proper farewell to the fans, one that he wasn't able to give upon being traded to Houston in 2017. He joins Franklin in the MLS alumni, who retired in 2018. Franklin spent six seasons with the Galaxy, winning two titles in addition to rookie of the year in 2008. His goal against Real Salt Lake in the 2013 playoffs is still remembered amongst fans of the Galaxy and otherwise. The duo join the Urban Pitch Podcast to discuss AJ's recent retirement and signing a one-day contract with the LA Galaxy (01:15), Julio and Brigitte's statuses as LAFC fans and the El Trafico rivalry dynamic (03:19), Sean winning rookie of the year with the LA Galaxy and coming up in MLS together (08:11), the locker room dynamic with the LA Galaxy teams in the late 2000s-early 2010s (13:56), their current relationship with the LA Galaxy and their thoughts on the current team (17:00), how MLS has grown since they came into the league (21:46), Julio's status as "The First to One" guy and the intensity of LA Galaxy fans (24:30), their favorite moments with the Galaxy (29:10), thoughts on Angel City FC (32:50), Sean's retirement advice for AJ (35:20), AJ's memorable NYC experience (41:11), Favorite boots they've ever worn (43:45), and another memorable night out for AJ (45:04). Endurance News: TEAM EUROPE DEFEND COLLINS CUP WITH DOMINANT SHOWING IN BRATISLAVA, WINNING EIGHT OF 12 MATCHES Team Europe are once again Collins Cup winners. Normann Stadler and Natascha Badmann's team won eight of the 12 matches in an astonishing show of dominance to defend the title they won in 2021, when they won six of the 12 matches. Team Europe finished on 53 points, with Team Internationals second on 38 and Team USA coming third, having collected 22.5 points. Team Europe produced a dominant performance to defend the Collins Cup in Samorin, Bratislava. Normann Stadler and Natascha Badmann's team posted 53 points, as they won eight of the 12 matches. Team Internationals' four wins were enough for second on 38 points, while Team USA – who failed to win a match – finished third on 22.5 points. Inspired by golf's Ryder Cup, the Collins Cup sees three teams of 12 (six men and six women) racing for their team in a bid to win points. There were 12 match races which featured a 2km swim, 80km bike ride and 18km run. Collins Cup match-ups announced: Olympic medallists Blummenfelt and Wilde drawn togetherCollins Cup match-ups announced: Olympic medallists Blummenfelt and Wilde drawn together The three teams earned points depending on where their athlete finished in the race. Athletes could earn an extra half-point for their team for every two minutes they won by, up to a six-minute victory, which equates to 1.5 points. Amd Daniela Ryf set the tone early for Team Europe, with the reigning Ironman world champion dominating on the bike for Stadler and Badmann's team to begin the defence of their crown in emphatic fashion. Wins for Ashleigh Gentle and Paula Findlay for Team Internationals would keep Team Europe on their toes in matches 2 and 3, but captain's pick Nicola Spirig – gold medal-winner at London 2012 – showed her prowess on the bike to win match 4. Holly Lawrence and Anne Haug rounded off a consummate performance from Team Europe in the women's races, winning four matches to Team Internationals' two. Team USA failed to register a win. Kristian Blummenfelt continued European dominance in match seven. The reigning Olympic champion emerged from the swim third, but showed his mettle on the bike to beat Team Internationals' Hayden Wilde into second. The Team USA competitor Ben Kanute took third. Sam Laidlow broke Europe's run of finishing in either first or second spot in match eight, with Team Internationals' Lionel Sanders beating Sam Long to the line. Laidlow would finish alongside match 11 winner Gustav Iden. However, Team Europe picked up wins in matches 9 (Magnus Ditlev), 11 (Gustav Iden) and 12 (Daniel Baekkegard) to ensure that Team Europe defended the crown they won last year. Match 10 was won by Team Internationals' Aaron Royle, meaning Team USA finished the event with no wins. What's New in the 303: Familiar faces take home wins at Leadville Trail 100 Previous champions Clare Gallagher and Adrian Macdonald take home their second wins at The Race Across the Sky. On Saturday morning, the most famous 100-mile trail race, The Leadville Trail 100 (The Race Across the Sky), kicked off in Leadville, Colo., as runners made their way through 4,800m of elevation gain in the Rocky Mountains. Previous champions Clare Gallagher (2016) and Adrian Macdonald (2021) both earned their second Leadville titles, taking the win by a margin of two hours. Adrian Macdonald of Fort Collins, Colo., wins the back-to-back titles at the Leadville 100. Photo: Leadville Race Series This race has been a staple of the ultrarunning community since its inception in 1983. The extreme elevation and high altitude are the biggest challenges athletes face as they make their way through the Rocky Mountains. The women's race When Gallagher won in 2016, she flirted with the course record of 18:06:24 (1994) for the first 50 miles. This year, Gallagher went out more conservatively, racing with Addie Bracy until the 50-mile mark. Bracy, a three-time USATF Trail National Champion, created a six-minute gap on a Gallagher, but she managed to gain back time on Bracy in the second half. By the 60-mile mark, Gallagher managed to fight her way back to the front, while Bracy dropped out of the race, leaving Gallagher with a considerable lead over the field, which she held until the end. Gallagher, from Boulder, Colo., was the first woman to cross the finish line in 19:37:57, only 37 minutes slower than her winning time in 2016. Alisyn Hummelberg of Corona del Mar, Calif. and Lindsey Herman of Albuquerque, N.M., came across the line for second and third, two hours after Gallagher finished. Macdonald remained composed early on, mixing things up with a pack of 10 runners until the mile 25 mark. A small gap at the front began to emerge over the next few miles as Macdonald set the pace. By the halfway mark, he established a 15-minute lead over the second-place runner. Heading into this year's race, Macdonald was destined to repeat as the men's champion. Last year, he won dominantly in only his first 100-mile race. The Fort Collins, Colo., native continued to extend his lead over the final 50 miles, coming to the finish line in 16:05:44, beating his 2021 winning time by 13 minutes. Macdonald crossed the finish line more than two hours before JP Giblin of Scotland and Ryan Kaiser of Bend, Ore., came across for second and third, respectively. And for the LA Galaxy, a draw against the Houston Dynamo showed how far this team has to go, but also why it was the first game of the year. On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter discuss the starting lineups, the standouts, and the breakdowns of the Galaxy's 1-1 draw with the Dynamo. They'll talk about how big Cristian Pavon can be this year for the club, and the many reasons around why Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez was so quiet in his Galaxy debut. There are very evident chemistry issues, but did the Galaxy defense take a step forward? Could the worry on defense be dissipating? And why does Nick DePuy look like he's always been in MLS? Kevin will tell you what it's like to travel with the Galaxy and how he ended up in a hotel gym with Javier Valdecantos. Plus, he'll let you know what his perspective on the game was from BBVA Stadium. Then, Josh and Kevin will talk about Chicharito being named Captain and what that's a much smaller issue than it was made out to be. Could you still see Jonathan dos Santos wearing the armband? And would any of the players be upset with Chicharito taking the helm of the Galaxy ship? COG STUDIOS, Calif. -- Have you ever said something and almost immediately regretted it? Well, I'm not sure "former" LA Galaxy midfielder and captain, Jermaine Jones, ever had that problem. And Jones' calm rant on his Instagram live show will give us plenty to talk about. On today's show, your host Josh Guesman will, of course, have his reaction to Jones' inflammatory comments and why he seems to be coming about this with something that is the complete opposite of true. Do Galaxy fans only care about big name players? Does the city at large only care about big name players? Is there a difference when talking about supporters? Or is this all just one big misunderstanding? We'll get to the bottom of it for sure. But first, Josh will tell you about three former Galaxy players who could be available and why the Galaxy might want to look in their direction when it comes to filling some of the 17 roster spots that are still open. Do the names Sean Franklin, Marcelo Sarvas, and Juninho send shivers up your spine? Then you'll want to listen and weigh-in on whether or not they should return to the club. And of course, our featured guest on this offseason podcast is good-friend of the show Brian Dunseth. Dunny will talk about the LA Galaxy's failure of a season and why it's an especially large blow to the Galaxy's reputation in player development. If you were a Galaxy prospect, would you be eying LAFC across the hall? It's a great discussion about the Galaxy and some of the big mistakes that were made or the talent that was misidentified on this roster over the years. Not bad for an offseason podcast with little to talk about. We hope this podcast gets you into that December feeling and we'll be back soon with more of the very best Galaxy content we can muster. Back after our Thanksgiving break, Jason, Ben, and Adam are ready to give you an extra-long episode. We start with continuing are look back at the 2017 season, and what it means for 2018, and today we concentrate on the single most important day of this year: the transfer deadline day that brought in Paul Arriola, Zoltan Stieber, Russell Canouse, and Bruno Miranda. We look at what they did this year and what we expect them to do next year. In our second segment we continue with our reviews of individual players and ask if we want them back next year. Since we skipped last week, we have a lot of players to get through: Sean Franklin, Bill Hamid, Ian Harkes, Jared Jeffrey, Taylor Kemp, Chris Korb, Bruno Miranda, Patrick Mullins, and Patrick Nyarko. Finally, we get to your Twitterbox questions where we talk about turkey, D.C. United players as Thanksgiving dishes, Dos Equis, the Washington Spirit and NWSL, and so much more. Give it a listen!
We finally have a D.C. United game about which to talk, but it didn't end up going the way any of us wanted. Ben, Adam, and Jason talk D.C. United's game against Orlando City SC (after diverting into Old Man Ben's Music Corner) and we start off by talking about Sean Franklin in particular and the defense in general, including advocating for Jalen Robinson and wondering who should actually be starting. We also talk about the ice cold play of D.C. United's forwards and what solutions might be found there. In the second segment we talk about the Chicago Fire and D.C. United's game against them this weekend. We discuss the most recent Dax McCarty trade, their recent swoon, and Veljko Paunovics style. We also discuss the way they have built that team and how D.C. United can break them down. Give ite a listen!
Today has been an insane day of news that it makes like everything seem like years ago. But it was only three days ago that D.C. United played against Toronto FC and got a point after having been down a man for over half the game! Jason, Ben, and Adam talk about that game, the start of which was the best D.C. United has played all year. We talk about TFC's performance in the game, Sean Franklin's up or down play, and the slew of tactics Ben Olsen used in the second half to stop TFC. In the second segment we go full-on news roundup, and today has already made some of this need further updates. We talk about Bruno Miranda and Zoltan Stieber, D.C. United's new wing acquisitions. We also talk about Gary Medel, the defensive midfield, and what the fact that they were offering all of that money means. We end by talking about two trades: that of Lamar Neagle, and that of Bobby Boswell (which broke while we were recording). Give it a listen!
After pausing so that we could take in the D.C. United game against FC Dallas, we immediately realized that was a mistake. However, Jason, Ben, and Adam are here to talk you through all of the soccer games in the past week and change, including the matches against the Montreal Impact and the New England Revolution. We start with the failures in the Dallas game generally, before focusing on Steve Birnbaum in particular. We also discuss D.C. United's passing accuracy as a false statistic, and pine for a new defensive midfielder. We also get into the US Open Cup loss so that we can talk about how Sean Franklin is. not. a center back., before giving up on the segment to talk about happier things. Those happier things are the US men's national team, for which we bring on our good friend Donald Wine II. We discuss this Gold Cup B team, why Bill Hamid isn't the starter even though he should be, and Dom Dwyer's appearance on the USMNT stage. We also give our thoughts on the Best XI that Bruce Arena could roll out and ponder the future of the Gold Cup in these Copa America times. Give it a listen!
Well that was another poor performance from D.C. United, but the guys from Filibuster are here to talk you through it. We talk about the game against New York City FC and start with some praise for Ian Harkes before diving into everything that went wrong. We talk about the midfield, the goals, and Steve Birnbaum and Sean Franklin. We also have to talk about the defensive midfield position, and the attack for good measure. We then bring on Kris Landis of Massive Report to give us the update on Columbus Crew SC. We talk about what has been missing from Gregg Berhalter's cookbook so far this season and the issues with Wil Trapp that reflect the issues with their gameplan. We talk about Zack Steffen and whether Federico Higuain's frustrations are a problem, Harrison Afful get subbed out at halftime, and his opposite number at fullback. Finally, we talk about their central midfield, the utility of Adam Jahn, and how to gameplan the Crew. Give it a listen!
It is an extra-special Monday edition of the Filibuster podcast! Jason, Ben, and Adam are here to break down D.C. United's first game of the season, including talking about why the goalkeepers were the men of the match for both teams in that opener. We also talk about the two right back conversion projects on display during this game, as well as United's (lack of) passing, before diving deep into Marcelo's penalty. We also talk about the problems D.C. United had with Luciano Acosta being out, how Sporting Kansas City succeeded in their gameplan, before ending with Sean Franklin's role in this game and the scramble that should have led to a goal. In the second segment we welcome on Raf Noboa y Rivera onto the show to preview the upcoming match against New York City FC. We talk about how they couldn't break through against Orlando City and how Patrick Viera is having the team line up this season. We talk about Andrea Pirlo and their center backs, Alexander Ring and Rodney Wallace, and ask whether or not Raf is worried that they couldn't solve Orlando City's defense. Give it a listen!
It is a Tuesday Filibuster for your earholes! Jason, Adam, and Ben are back to talk about D.C. United's preseas on (5:33), including the friendly against J-Sodra, Ben Olsen's lineup choices, Sean Franklin at center back, and the crop of trialists. Something happened to Ben's audio, so we had to chop out some parts; believe me, he made very smart and insightful comments. Ben's audio recovered for the second segment, in which we discuss the new crop of MLS jerseys! They range from the boring (RSL and Montreal) to the good looking (Portland Timbers) to the definitely not boring (D.C. United). Finally, we crack open the Twitterbox and answer your questions. Give it a listen!
The three horsemen of the Filibuster are back in action, and ready to bring you a (belated) episode this week. Adam, Jason, and Ben start off by catching you up on the week's news, with the re-signing of Jared Jeffrey and the fact that Chris Durkin will spend most of the year with D.C. United first up. We talk about the signing of Sebastien Le Toux and the signing of Ian Harkes, plus the injury and surgery of Bill Hamid. Finally, we end the segment by talking about Sean Franklin at center back, Nick DeLeon at fullback, and the trialists who are in camp (who also happen to be fullbacks). In the second segment we bring on our old friend Sebastian Salazar. We talk about his move to ESPN, the happenings at MLS Media Day, and Tim Howard's comments to USA Today. We ask him about the difference in the US men's national team under Bruce Arena, Major League Soccer, and the new expansion teams. We end his time on the show by laughing at the LA Galaxy, talking about D.C. United and their defense, and asking him if he misses his Capitol Soccer Show co-host, Greg Roche. Give it a listen!
After a week off for the holiday, the Filibuster crew is back, rested, and ready to go. We start with a D.C. United news roundup, talking about the departure of Andrew Dykstra, the arrival of Jose Guillermo Ortiz, and the re-signing of Sean Franklin. We break down what each of these moves mean, and go on a meander about whether or not this team could use a 352 late in games. We then do the last two Cakes or Deaths of the year, for General Manager Dave Kasper and head coach Ben Olsen. You will not be surprised as to where we land. Finally, we bring you an interview Adam conducted with Ari Gejdenson, owner of the brand-new soccer bar Dock FC, located in Ivy City. Adam talks with Ari about his history, his career playing soccer, and his plans for this brand new venue. Give it a listen!
The guys are back this week to pick up where they left off with Gary Corbett reliving more Eric Carr memories. Eric Carr Memories The guys also wrap things up with a discussion with Gary about what Eric would think about the music business these days, what he would be doing if he were around today, as well as talk about a long-rumored reunion tour in 1990 that didn't come to fruition. It is a Tuesday, which means there is another Filibuster to delight and amaze your ears. We start off with a news roundup (Adam's fun time news roundup time), in which we talk about the departure of Davy Arnaud, the seemingly confirmed departure of Alvaro Saborio, and the rumors about the status of Luciano Acosta's negotiations. We then move into our player review series, and put Julian Buescher, Nick DeLeon, Andrew Dykstra, Sean Franklin, Bill Hamid, and Charlie Horton under the microscope. Finally, we gripe about the fact that there are no MLS Cup Playoffs this weekend (curse you, Toronto Argonauts!) and then talk about the disaster that is the US Men's national team. We also find some good things to talk about, such as the partnership of Jozy Altidore and Bobby Wood, before ending with our suggestions for Jurgen Klinsmann on how to gameplan Costa Rica tonight. Give it a listen!
Hosted by Dispatch resident MTB expert and race announcer Sean Franklin tries (unsuccessfully) to take a break from being surrounded by ultrarunners on the podcast while we take the show to the Kitchen Next Door at Union Station in downtown Denver for the Colorado High School Cycling League fundraiser. League Executive Director and 2015 Sportswomen of Colorado ‘Trailblazer’ award winner Kate Rau and Director of Operations John “Hutch” Hutchinson sharing their own mountain biking origin stories and discuss the history, origins, goals, structure and summer schedule for this unique co-ed youth league that started in 2010. We hear from parents, coaches and others affiliated with the league to get their experience with this unique opportunity to get all kids hooked on being outside, participating and competing at a high level regardless of experience or even disability and Coach Bussey of East High School’s cycling team gives his advice on great locations around the Denver Metro area to help further develop your or your young racer’s mountain bike skills. Dispatch host Laurie Nakauchi discusses her impressive results and perhaps shares her secrets for success at the notoriously challenging and high Silverheels 100 Mile; regarded as the “Grand-daddy” of all Human Potential Running Series events (put on by Dispatch’s very own Sherpa John – we’re like one big family over here). Who doesn’t love a race with 5-11 free bonus miles and middle of the night hallucinations? Cory and Russ briefly touch on the adventures they, Nick and Tony had the previous weekend during the Never Summer Adventure Race as complete adventure racing novices that they committed to during the last episode – a more detailed follow-up episode is in the works.
Hello, friends! It is time for another episode of Filibuster with Adam, Jason, and Ben! We preamble by talking about a change we would like to see to the MLS playoff system, but we start the show proper by talking about D.C. United's new badge and our initial reactions to it. Spoiler alert: We like it! We then have to talk about MLS Cup, and it takes us longer to intro this segment than it does for Portland Timbers to score on Columbus Crew SC. We talk about poor Steve Clark, whether or not these teams will be the favorites to return next year, Adam Kwarasey, the out of bounds ball, and much more. We turn our eyes to D.C. United after the break and talk about the trades involving Chris Pontius and Lamar Neagle as well as the three players released: Facundo Coria, Michael Farfan, and Jairo Arrieta. We end with our Cake or Death series, in which we review the seasons of Sean Franklin, Markus Halsti, Jared Jeffrey, Taylor Kemp, and Perry Kitchen. Give it a listen!
It is Tuesday so it means another Filibuster to which you can listen! Adam, Jason, and Ben talk about D.C. United's 2-1 comeback win over New York City FC. We talk about the play of Chris Pontius, Alvaro Saborio coming off of the bench, Sean Franklin, the silliness that was the MLS team of the week (which featured no D.C. United players), and D.C. United giving up early goals. We then have to talk about this weekend's Concacaf Cup between the USMNT and Mexico. We talk about the team, the 3-5-2, Jurgen Klinsmann, and the roster that Jurgen decided to bring with him for this game. Finally, we talk about the state of the MLS playoff race, and how the Eastern Conference is basically already decided except for the seedings. Give it a listen!
Another Tuesday means another great episode from your friends at Filibuster! Ben, Adam, and Jason talk about D.C. United's 2-0 win over Columbus Crew SC and ask whether or not this is the way that Bennyball is supposed to work? We break down Crew Sc's tactics in this game, the Chris Rolfe and Fabian Espindola goal, the squad rotation that will be necessary throughout May and June, and Sean Franklin's set piece goal. After disposing of the Crew, we have to talk about Bill Hamid's extension and what it means for D.C. United. Finally, we talk about this weekend's game against Sporting Kansas City and have to start with whatever is going on with Benny Feilhaber's hair. We then move into more on-the-field matters, asking what is the story with the Sporks this year and what United should do against them to take advantage. We end by talking about Dom Dwyer and what United should do to gameplan the Sporks. Give it a listen! And finally, we're having a Black and Red United meetup on May 30. You can find all the details at https://www.facebook.com/events/950257298340362/ . Come join us!
