What a race from Patrick Lange. Today, we look at how KONA unfolded and why, after all these years, it still comes down to the run . . . and maybe the swim? It's incredible to think that Lange may have strategically pulled back on the bike with a 4:06, but it definitely makes you want to look at the little things and how important they are in racing. Speed kills in shorter racing, but at the Ironman distance, mistakes can pile up. Making good decisions in your race (and training) often trumps technology, but it's all so tempting. Today, we get into many aspects of Ironman training and racing with a food for thought discussion. Topics: Execution for the win The incredible Patrick Lange Ditlev's grit Blummenfelt's struggles The amazing Cam Wurf (and Matt Hanson) Rudy von Berg, Sam Laidlow The swim course record The most underrated triathlete All the new methods, but . . . Mistakes take you out of the race Mental games Was a good chunk of the field over-raced? Pro triathlete's schedules Do some of us do too much?

First the British superstar had to overcome a blip right at the start as he fell to his knees on the beach before rising to play catchup. Yee and Wilde, who seemed to be joined by the hip after exiting the water side by side and spending the majority of the bike ride together, were inseparable throughout the first three laps of the run, before Yee eventually got the better of the Kiwi in a sprint to the line. Defending world champion Leo Bergere of France got back on a podium with third, as Les Bleus swept 3-4-5 with Pierre Le Corre and Dorian Coninx enjoying strong races. Swim – Dévay leads the way Over the course of a choppy sea swim off the coast of Sardinia, the men's race didn't follow the same script as the women's competition just hours earlier, with the majority of the field coming out of the water within touching distance. Over the first lap, Frenchman Dorian Coninx led the way, with the South African duo of Henri Schoeman and Jamie Riddle hot on his heels coming out for the Australian exit at halfway. Hungarian athlete Márk Dévay, a former World Aquathlon champion, was also up there, as was WTCS leader heading into today, Vasco Vilaca. By the end of the swim, things where more of the same at the front, with Dévay keeping things honest as he lead out of the water, with Riddle, Schoeman, Coninx, Vilaca and a number of others close by. Most importantly, Alex Yee and Hayden Wilde, two of the pre-race favourites, were just +0:15 down out of the water and in perfect position. Further back, Olympic champion Kristian Blummenfelt was just over half a minute behind at the back of the second group, with compatriot Gustav Iden ten seconds further back at +0:47 and Richard Murray of the Netherlands the last out of the water a minute down after Spaniard Mario Mola withdrew. Bike – Blummenfelt left stranded Out of transition, there was a mad scramble to make the front pack, as two dozen athletes, including Wilde, made it into the front pack, with the second group featuring the likes of Blummenfelt. The chase pack, sensing danger, worked hard over the first lap to close the gap, but was unable to, with the gap then quickly blowing out. After three laps, the gap was well over half a minute, with Wilde drilling the pace at the front of the lead group, as the chase group struggled to make back any time despite featuring the firepower of the likes of Blummenfelt and Swiss Simon Westermann, who on multiple occasions tried to drag the chasers along. By halfway, the gap was up to +0:50 with the front pack showing no signs of slowing, as Belgian Martin Van Riel, returning from a long period out with injury, returned to the front of a WTCS bike pack for the first time in close to a year. Off the bike, the gap back to Blummenfelt and the rest of the chase pack was +1:15, with the front pack, thanks to the hard work of the likes of Van Riel and Wilde, enjoying a comfortable buffer coming into transition. Lasse Lührs (GER) – 1:38:04 WTCS Cagliari 2022 results: Classy win for Georgia Taylor-Brown By Helen Gorman 8 Oct 2022 Georgia Taylor-Brown added another WTCS win in Cagliari on Saturday to extend her lead in the 2022 Series. Taylor Knibb had the extra factor on the bike, which dictated the outcome of the race in Sardinia, Italy. Taylor-Brown benefited from Knibb's hard work and then used her superior run strength to secure her third WTCS win of the season and extended her lead in the overall Series. Knibb was rewarded with bronze as Beth Potter and Cassandre Beaugrand found themselves on the wrong side of the beak and too far back to factor in the medal positions. Georgia Taylor-Brown WTCS Cagliari 2022 Photo Credit: World Triathlon Swim – Lopes leads the way The beach run into the water split athletes up immediately. Beaugrand ran, dived and swam away from the rest in the choppy sea before Maya Kingma and Vittoria Lopes took over, particularly on the second lap. Lopes was first to hit the timing mat after 1500m in 19:39 while Summer Rappaport, Beaugrand, Kingma and Sophie Coldwell and just about everybody else except Taylor Knibb, were bunched up with her. Potter and Taylor-Brown were 9th and 10th out, but there was really nothing separating them as they all burst into transition. Bike – All aboard the Knibb train The short transition was executed cleanly and quickly by everyone and a huge bunch left transition. The pace looked to be on from the start, but Knibb overcame a 30-second deficit from the swim and caught them by the third of 10 laps. She hit the front, blew the pack apart on the fourth lap and it was a rare moment that she wasn't on the front for the rest of the cycle leg. The British trio of Taylor-Brown, Coldwell and Waugh rode in the front group of 11 athletes, but Potter and Beaugrand were dropped. By the time the leaders hit T2, the group had put 1 min 44 seconds into the chase group, which contained Potter and Beaugrand. Advertisements Run – GTB takes control The group of 11 leaders were separated by no more than a second coming into transition, but it wasn't long before Taylor-Brown hit the front along with Knibb and Emma Lombardi. By the third of four laps, Taylor-Brown hit the front and stayed there to cross the line in front to claim another excellent victory in 2022. She said: “I just tried to run my own race and tried to stay in contact with that bike group. Taylor made it really hard but it worked in our favour because we got a really good gap. “I forgot how hard she rides, but it's good, she really gets the group going and we're all trying to hang on to her wheel. “I started speaking to the girls on the first two laps (of the run), ‘lets work together because this could be the podium.'” On extending her Series lead over Flora Duffy, who wasn't there today, she said: “It's all going to come down to Abu Dhabi now.” Lombardi was delighted to win silver, her first ever WTCS medal, she said: “I'm really enjoying racing against the best in the world, it's fantastic.” Beaugrand ran up to eighth place and moved in to third position overall in the Series. Potter finished 10th, which moves her down one place to fourth in the Series. WTCS Cagliari 2022 Results Saturday October 8 2022 – ELITE WOMEN 1.5km / 38k / 10k 1. Max Neumann and Anne Haug came out on top in Ibiza to claim inaugural Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) European Open triathlon titles on Saturday (6 May). The races were of the PTO standard distance of 100km comprising a 2km swim, 80km cycle, and 18km run. The men's race was billed as a clash between the last three Olympic champions - Germany's Beijing 2008 hero Jan Frodeno, double gold medallist Alistair Brownlee, and reigning champion Kristian Blummenfelt. Brownlee was looking good at the front on the early stages of the run, but nearly collided with a passerby who wandered out onto the course while looking at his phone in Ibiza Town. The man thankfully stopped just before there was contact, and it had little bearing on the double Olympic champion, who was soon caught by Neumann with the Australian moving clear 10km from home. The Briton clearly went out too hard and struggled badly after that, dropping back with Blummenfelt and Denmark's Magnus Ditlev quickly passing him. Norwegian Blummenfelt was unable to bridge the gap as Neumann took the biggest victory of his career in 3:13:45. Blummenfelt jogged home to finish 27 seconds behind with Ditlev rounding out the podium in third almost two minutes off the pace. Frodeno - like Blummenfelt a subsequent Ironman world champion - was fourth in his first race after almost two years out through injury with Jason West fifth and Brownlee back in sixth place. Speaking afterwards to PTO, Neumann said, "You don't get many chances to race these guys. They're what's made triathlon and it's just a privilege to go up against Jan, Ali, Kristian. They literally made the sport for us guys. I'm quite emotional about it. Haug flies home for women's victory Anne Haug surged clear in the women's race with just 12 out of the 26 men's starters clocking a faster run leg than the German two-time Olympian. Lucy Charles-Barclay had a lead of over a minute and a half as she transitioned off the bike, but Haug took over less than midway through the run and gave her British rival a respectful tap on the side as she went past. When Australia's Ashleigh Gentle - another two-time Olympian - moved ahead of Charles-Barclay into second place, she was over a minute down on Haug who was fairly powering on at the front. The 2019 Ironman world champion won by a two and a half minutes in the end, crossing the line in 3:38:00. Haug invoked the spirit of Forrest Gump in her post-race interview, saying, "I compete against the best of the world and that really pushes me to get the best out of me. "I had a fantastic race, I must say. My swim was OK, I felt very strong on the bike, and I knew I could run pretty quick but you never know. In Today's Show Endurance News - PTO European Open, Taylor Knibb on stress fracture rehab What's new in the 303 - Lookout Mountain Hill Climb is in danger of cancellation; Boulder Valley Velodrome Video of the Week - Countdown to the PTO Euro Open Endurance News: PTO European Open 2023: The keys to victory for a mouthwatering Ibiza weekend By John Levison 4 May 2023 We are just days away now from the first PTO Tour event of the 2023 season, the 2023 European Open, which will be held on Saturday in Ibiza, Spain. Full details on the timing, how to watch and more in our pre-event explainer. What I want to do here is take a look ahead, and outline some of the potential factors which could change the direction of the race on Saturday, for both the Pro Men and Pro Women. Coming so early in the typical racing year, it is very unusual to have such a depth of field in early May. Many of the favourites – Ryf, Charles-Barclay, Blummenfelt, Ditlev, Brownlee, Frodeno as examples – have not yet raced at all. Some – Haug, West, Sodaro, Jewett – arrive with confidence, while others have perhaps not hit the heights they wanted in their limited races this year. That all suggests strongly that this one is unlikely to go simply to form and rankings. Despite the best experience and preparations, expect at least some of the top names to talk post-race that their race sharpness was missing. How big will Lucy's swim lead be? As is now familiar, Great Britain's Lucy Charles-Barclay will almost certainly be the first athlete to complete the 2km swim at Figueretas Beach. In the absence of Taylor Knibb – who managed to stay with the Brit in Dallas last year – she's probably going to be solo through most of the two laps on Saturday. Lotte Wilms (70.3 World Champs) and Sara Perez Sala (Challenge Miami) have shown the potential to perhaps come closest in the water, but the gap to some of the big-name favourites (Ashleigh Gentle, Daniela Ryf, Paula Finlay and co) will be the one of the first points of interest. Of note, is that LCB has spent four weeks training consistently at altitude in Font-Romeu, France to prepare for this race. Her altitude block immediately prior to the 2021 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship helped deliver one of the greatest middle-distance performances ever. If Saturday starts with a gap of significantly more than a minute over those with genuine winning potential, then it'll be advantage Lucy less than 30 minutes into the racing. Lucy Charles-Barclay / IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship 2021 Photo by Patrick McDermott/Getty Images for IRONMAN Where's Kristian and Magnus? For the men's swim, the chances of a lone athlete breaking clear are remote zero. You would expect the likes of Aaron Royle, Alistair Brownlee, Jan Frodeno, Daniel Baekkegard, Ben Kanute and Kyle Smith to be among those within 10/15 seconds entering T1. Will the in-form Jason West make that cut here? Key questions will be: How close will IRONMAN 70.3 World Champion, Krsitian Blummenfelt be? And what deficit will Denmark's Magnus Ditlev have to make up? The Dane won't be at the front, but is a better swimmer than I think many give him credit for. If he enters T1 within say a minute or so of the leaders, he's right where he needs to be. Significantly less, and he'll be smiling as he starts dropping the watt bombs on the bike! Group dynamics Once we are onto the bikes – and with memories of 2022 still vivid – how groups on the bike are monitored and policed will, I think, be key to how the race plays out. Nobody wants to see drafting penalties issued – but equally, we want to see racing within the rules too. That's as much to do with the athletes, as it is the Technical Officials. Looking at the bike course, it's basically a straight line, out-and-back course, which starts with a steady incline of just over 5km. The latter, perhaps, may help thin the field out early, while the nature of the route should help make maintaining a legal distance easy (and easier to spot). We'll see how this plays out – and hopefully we won't even need to reference it post-race. Breakaway? Who'll make – or be able to make – a move on the bike? I don't think that's going to come via bike handling skills – this is not Nice, France for example – but if we take the men first, who'll be able to get away? The lack of Sam Laidlow means one less ‘go from the gun' athlete with proven bike ability, but it feels unlikely that Brownlee, Kanute, Frodeno and co. will be playing it safe, with the likes of Blummenfelt and Ditlev probably not far behind. Kristian is confident he can win on the run if needed. That remains to be proven, but nobody is going to be waiting around to make it any easier for him. I think that points to any lead group from the swim being whittled down via sustained pressure, but if I had to make a prediction, I think we'll see a small and very select group entering T2 separated by 10-15 seconds. In typical fashion, I expect Lucy Charles-Barclay to lead for at least a significant proportion of this race, solo. If she's on St George 2021 form, that could be all the way to the finish line. As one of the few top female athletes not to have raced this year, she's been relatively quiet in media headline terms – but her competition will surely not have forgotten her abilities. With some of the greatest runners we've ever seen in action here – Anne Haug, Chelsea Sodaro, Tamara Jewett and Emma Pallant-Browne – that all points to Daniela Ryf and Paula Findlay in particular leading the charge to join LCB up front. Without Taylor Knibb as a potential partner at the front, if LCB finds Ryf and Findlay riding well and bridging up without those ‘runners', I think she'll be more than content with that company. Who's got the run legs? We've talked at length in the lead-up to this race about the strength-in-depth of the fields. We know we have some of the best runners in the history of the sport racing, but who can produce it against this level of competition, especially when the swim and bike will surely be raced in aggressive fashion in both the men's and women's fields? I don't foresee anyone starting their 18km feeling fresh – remember what happened to Blummenfelt, Laidlow and Brownlee at the Canadian Open?! Most peoples' wildcard for the men's race is Jason West, for example. A well-earned position, courtesy of his form this year at CLASH Miami and 70.3 Oceanside, each producing headline-grabbing run splits. Will he be in a position at T2 to put that to potentially race-winning use? Frodeno and Brownlee are two of the most decorated athletes of all time, but what have they got left in their running legs? Similar situation for the women. Tamara Jewett's run prowess is not new, but Oceanside was the first time that had resulted in a win against some of the biggest names in the sport. This is another step up. Anne Haug has used her run speed to podium in almost every non-drafting race she starts – is Tamara there, just yet? https://www.tri247.com/triathlon-news/elite/pto-tour-european-open-start-list-bib-numbers-pro-men https://www.tri247.com/triathlon-news/elite/pto-tour-european-open-start-list-bib-numbers-pro-women Taylor Knibb on stress fracture rehab By Jonathan Turner News Director 20 Apr 2023 American star Taylor Knibb is back firing on all cylinders after an extended injury layoff. She launched her YouTube channel this week (video embedded below) with a detailed rundown of the healing process – and frighteningly for her rivals she appears to have produced that astonishing performance to win the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship last October in spite of her foot issues. Talking through the timeline and the details of the injury which has kept her on the sidelines since November's WTCS finale in Abu Dhabi, she explained how the problem first emerged: “I was prepping for WTCS Leeds [which took place in early June] and I felt something in my foot and was diagnosed with a stress reaction. “I was told two to six weeks and you'll be back, it's really minor. One surgeon even said I wouldn't have even stopped you from running with that minor an edema. “But it wasn't healing and finally at 11 weeks I saw a doctor and he said you can start running now because if it's not healed, it's not going to heal. “So I started racing in the fall – I raced Dallas, Cagliari and then the 70.3 Worlds, Bermuda and Abu Dhabi. And that quintet of races saw some superb performances – she picked up a second, third and fourth in the WTCS events, led for much of the PTO US Open in Dallas before being overhauled by Ashleigh Gentle and then produced that masterclass in St George where she left the world's best trailing in her wake. But taking up the story after that busy spell of racing, Knibb revealed: “Then I took a little break and it turns out that my foot was not healed. So I got an MRI and it was now a stress fracture, with a CT scan showing a fracture line. “So then my options were I could rest it fully and hope it would heal and that I think would be eight weeks of nothing in a boot – no weight bearing, no training whatsoever. “Or I could get surgery and I opted for that and got a screw put in my fifth metatarsal on January 3rd.” From that point onwards it's all been about the recovery process, something that the 25-year-old freely admits has been “very challenging”. She explained: “Because the incision point is directly to the bone I had to be very careful and wait until it had healed before starting swimming again or doing anything. “I did get to do strength training with Erin [Carson] which helped my sanity a lot – I wanted to go in the day after surgery, I think she said no to that but it was maybe two days after I was back working with her. “It was four weeks before I was cleared to do some easy swimming and biking and built it up gradually. “But I'm back fully swimming and biking and adding the running in now.” She goes into detail on the video about how even getting back outside has been a big boost and what she might do differently in the future, saying: “It was tough but I think that I have learned a lot from it and I think if I were to do it again I would focus on what you need to do [rather than what you can't]. “It was very challenging and I'm very grateful for the people around me because I know I was not fun to be around some days. But it's a period of time that's hopefully closed now.” The defence of her 70.3 Worlds title in Finland in late August is the big priority for 2023 and we look forward to seeing her back on the start line soon – and hopefully producing more YouTube videos too! A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE VELODROME The Boulder Valley Velodrome is a 250-meter wooden cycling track in Erie, Colorado which for 5 years served as a training ground for Olympians, and a place of discovery and excitement for those new to track cycling. Founded by Frank Banta and Doug Emerson and designed by renowned track architect Peter Junek, Boulder Valley Velodrome is an Olympic-caliber track that boasts the angles and altitude for some of North America's best riding. The property was acquired in 2008, construction began in 2011, and the track opened in 2013. In 2013, a week away from opening, 70m of the track was destroyed by a tornado. Then, after a month's worth of repairs, lightning struck in the same spot. That was the month of the disastrous Boulder flood. Over its 5 years of operation, the velodrome hosted numerous national and international cycling events and was a popular destination for anyone from Olympians to amateur cyclists and families – really anyone with the need for speed. The facility was put up for sale in 2019 and has since fallen into disrepair. In 2020, a group of dedicated cycling enthusiasts launched a campaign to resurrect the velodrome and restore it to its former glory. Their efforts have included fundraising through GoFundMe, seeking sponsorships, and recruiting volunteers to help with the restoration work. The goal of the campaign is to create a world-class cycling destination that will attract riders from all over the world and help to promote the sport of cycling. With the support of the community, the Boulder Valley Velodrome is poised to once again become a vibrant center of cycling culture and competition. The Boulder Valley Velodrome's story is, and will always be, a story of passion, perseverance, and community. Out of the 26 velodromes in the country, the Boulder Valley Velodrome is one of just two tracks that meet Olympic standards. For press inquiries, please contact info@bouldervalleyvelodrome.org. Endurance News: 2022 PTO World Rankings London, UK: The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) today announced the final placings for the 2022 PTO World Rankings, with German Anne Haug claiming top spot for the women and Norwegian Kristian Blummenfelt leading the way for the men. The PTO World Rankings were introduced to identify and rank the world's best professional triathletes who participate in non-drafting triathlon events. Any athlete who holds a professional license and is a PTO Professional member is eligible. The leading athletes share out an end of season bonus pool of $2 million split equally between women and men, with a cool $100,000 going to the top ranked athletes. “I'm really overwhelmed to be on top of the PTO World Rankings after the challenging Covid years. Although I didn't have the one outstanding race I would have wished for, I was able to be very consistent in my performance throughout the season, thanks to my amazing team behind me. They kept me fit and healthy,” said Haug, who's three counting scores in 2022 included Challenge Roth (131.41 points), Ironman Hawaii (110.20 pts) and the Ironman St. George World Championships (109.56 pts). “This year we saw some absolutely outstanding performances, for example Daniela at the Ironman Worlds in Utah, Chelsea in Kona or Taylor at the 70.3 Worlds. That inspires me, shows how fantastic our sport is and that if you don't go up a level each year, you'll fall behind.” “The new PTO Open races give us a unique opportunity to race the best athletes from all distances, which improves the quality of every race and adds the spice everyone needs to perform. The team format of the Collins Cup has also pushed racing to a new level, strengthening camaraderie, team spirit, fair play and tactics.” Blummenfelt has had an outstanding 12 months, not just in winning the full Ironman World Championships in May and the 70.3 version in October, but also breaking 7 hours in the Sub7 Challenge in June. His three counting scores included: Iroman Hawaii (128.26 pts), the Ironman St. George World Championships (114.98 pts) and the Ironman 70.3 World Championships (113.14 pts). “It was a strong year for me winning the Ironman World Championships and 70.3 World Championships in St George among other performances. Finishing top of the 2022 PTO World Rankings is something I'm very proud of and I'll be trying to do the same again in 2023.” The PTO and an athlete committee has been working on an updated version of the PTO World Rankings system for 2023, that will be announced next month. New study says Strava kudos motivate you to run more When you are looking for motivation to get out for a run, is Strava getting you out the door? Well, a study out of Radboud University in Nijmegen, Netherlands, says that Strava, the largest online social network for athletes, spurs exercise and gives runners motivation to record an activity. The study, published in the Journal of Social Networks, analyzed Strava profiles to see how runners in the same virtual Strava club influenced each other's running behaviour. Researchers focused on five different Strava clubs in the Netherlands that functioned as an online extension of real-life running clubs, totalling 329 members. In a pre-study survey, they asked the subjects prime what their motive for using Strava was: 83 per cent expressed it was to log activities; 78 per cent said it was to track their progression; 31 per cent said it was for social interaction with other runners, while 21 per cent was to receive validation for their activity. Researchers predicted that runners use their peers' behaviour as a yardstick and may intentionally try to imitate peers' behaviours to promote their relative standing or to avoid rejection. Figure. 3. Development of the mean of running attributes (based on running volume, frequency, and gender) They investigated the recorded data for a year, constructing a longitudinal dataset of networks and behaviour, and discovered that those who receive more kudos were inclined to run more. While running variables differed over time within clubs in Figure 3, no consistent seasonal pattern was found. Researchers initially thought that athletes who ran more would be the most influential on the app, but it was the opposite; athletes who ran less were more likely to follow the running behaviour of their friends who ran more. According to the study, “Those who received more kudos for their activities, ran more.” The study also found that many runners change their running behaviour to do more kudos-worthy activities, (i.e., run farther, run longer, chase segments). Athletes who had kudos turned off ran less than those who had kudos enabled. What's New in the 303: Specialized buys former Pearl Izumi building LOUISVILLE, Colo. (BRAIN) — Specialized Bicycle Components bought the award-winning office building here previously owned by Pearl Izumi, for $14.9 million. The company said Thursday that it would use the space for an innovation center. "We have known for quite some time that we have outgrown our current innovation center in Boulder. This is our best economical option in the area. Our commitment to bring radically innovative bikes, equipment and experiences to riders requires investing in functional, inspiring, and collaborative workspaces for our teammates. We are greatly looking forward to the future of this new innovation center," the company said in a statement to BRAIN. Pearl Izumi moved into the 55,000-square-foot building in 2013. The custom-built building features locally sourced materials and sustainable features. In 2014 it was honored by the Colorado and Denver chapters of The American Institute of Architects. Pearl Izumi was owned by Shimano from 2008 until last May, when it was purchased by United Sports Brands, the parent of Nathan, Cutters, and Shock Doctor, among other brands. In September USB said it was reducing staff and vacating the building. At the time, Michael Magerman, USB's president and CEO, said the building had been "mostly vacant" since the acquisition because many employees began working from home during the pandemic. Some of the brand's workforce was already dispersed before the pandemic. "In an effort to maximize efficiencies, USB will move the remaining functions and people to remote work or relocate them from Colorado to USB's California location. USB has already made significant investments into the brand and we intend to invest in and grow the business for many years to come," Magerman said in a statement to BRAIN. Some Pearl Izumi employees were given the option to relocate to USB's headquarters in Fountain Valley, California, or to work remotely. Closing: Thanks again for listening in this week. As a follow-up to our podcast on the evolution of the professional triathlon, this episode focuses on the tip of the performance spear with a spotlight on two athletes who have taken the sport to new heights. Gustav Iden and Kristian Blummenfelt, also known as The Norwegian Train. With stand-out Olympic and Ironman performances in recent years, the two athletes paved the way to a stellar showing at the 2022 Hawaii Ironman World Championships and a record-breaking win for Iden. The pair recently appeared on the Rich Roll podcast to shed light on their approach and offered a glimpse into their training method, which is well known for its grounding in science and technology, spearheaded by their coach, Olav Aleksander Bu. In this episode of the purple patch podcast, Ironman Master Coach, Matt Dixon takes the insights gleaned from the interview with Iden and Blummenfelt and examines what you can learn from the principles, approach, and success of the seemingly unstoppable Norwegian Train. Matt discusses: Context and Perspective: The differences between elite professionals and the time-starved amateur. (12:48) "It's sort of a monastic life...it's not the game that the vast majority of us are playing." (20:27) "While the pros have a very pure speed and performance challenge, us as amateurs face an optimization challenge in both training, planning, and where to apply focus so that we can ultimately move our performance needle." Traits and Approaches: Traits and principles that make up the training approach of elite professionals. (25:22) "When you listen to Kristian, and Gustav, what comes through for me is a series of traits and approaches, all wrapped up in the team setup that are very, very common across almost any high-performing team and individual. And this could be tailored and positioned to sports, to business, to broader life." Actionable Takeaways: Key lessons you can draw from the interview to apply to your training approach and performance journey. (40:48) "What should you apply right now, from all of these insights? You can't just change everything, but what are the components that you should do? Should you go and grab a lactate meter? Should you recruit your partner to help you with the application of the core temperature monitor? If you've listened to the episode and interview you'll understand what I mean by that. Should you hire a personal physiologist? Should you scrap the family holiday so that you can spend it all on data analytics? No, at least not before you do these things that I'm going to break through." There are professionals. There are Olympians. But rare is the athlete who is so entirely and utterly devoted to sport in mind, body, and soul, that they exceed titles all together.Today I am lucky to host two of these extraordinary individuals: Norsemen Gustav Iden & Kristian Blummenfelt. In an unprecedented period of just 9 months, Kristian was crowned Olympic champion in Tokyo and bagged the fastest Ironman performance ever in his debut. After winning the 2021 70.3 World Champion title, this year Gustav had a spectacular 2022 debut victory at the Ironman World Championships in Kona—a race in which Kristian placed 3rd—emerging from Kristian's formidable shadow and smashing the overall Kona course record with a blistering 7:40:24. On top of that, he rewrote the marathon course record with a 2:36;15 26.2. Racing in tandem until the very end, Gustav and Kristian gave mindboggling, paradigm-crushing performances at the 2022 Ironman World Championship this year. It was an unforgettable barnburner of a race, and today we dive deep into the metrics and mechanics of that epic day.Watch: YouTube.Read: Show notes.Today's Sponsors:ROKA: roka.comUCAN: ucan.co/roll Navitas: navitasorganics.com/richrollWhoop: WHOOP.com Final Note: If you dig this conversation, look out for my upcoming podcast with their coach (and mad genius) Olav Aleksander Bu, which will be released in the not-so-distant future. The Norwegian Train is in the house. Today we recap the Ironman World Championship and look at racing strategy, the coverage, and what lessons we can learn as age groupers from an unbelievable race. We look at Iden and Blummenfelt and what their real training secret likely is. We talk about the big swim pack, drafting on the bike, and what all that did to set up the run. We talk about the shift in qualification standards, the move to make things seem easier, and fast shoes. Our belief that “once you get too hot, it's over” played out again as did “you don't have to catch them, they'll come back to you.” Lots of interesting topics to go over from KONA, but we also bring it back to the amateur level and ask important questions about your dreams of getting faster, including, “Are your buddies slowing you down?” Topics: KONA is a special place, but should the race rotate locations? The 2 Day format . . . good or bad? Breaking down the broadcast Advertising overload? The quest to make everything possible A mother wins Easier and easier to qualify - does it lose its luster? The big swim pack in the men's race The bike and drafting Shower, dry off, 5k Penalties The swim game has changed Not as much separation Iden and Blummenfelt worked together the whole race Laidlow upset the apple cart Iden's Hat Bike fits Fast Hoes Once you get too hot, it's over Iden and Blummenfelt's REAL secret sauce You don't have to catch them, they'll come back to you Are your buddies slowing you down? The smart money is on Blummenfelt, Iden, and Ryf, but who do we think has a chance to knock them off? We give our predictions, plus get into Kona racing strategy, including why the swim is so important, how athletes position themselves on the bike, and why it really all boils down the the run. We talk about the legend of the Island, local perspective, and respect for the land, along with why experience is so important. Some athletes are always in the news, but it's the ones you don't really hear about much that understand what it takes to be a World Champion. Will that matter or will Blummenfelt and Iden run away with it? Will Ryf show her dominance from start to finish? Will Patrick Lange re-emerge? Is Lionel ready? While there are favorites, this is one of the more spread out fields in a while. Topics: 2 Day Event - Is it sustainable? Local perspective on hosting World Championships Spirituality of the Island Kona is a Runner's Race Drafting vs. Working with the group Why pros work so hard on this swim Women's Race Picks Men's Race Picks Favorites and Sleepers and why Below are some of the Pros we talk about.
