For our second episode of Magus, we are delving into the deep dark cave of history to the unravel the mysterious life of Mother Shipton, a Tudor era prophetess with links to folkloric sites all over England, from Knaresborough to the Rollright Stones to Somerset and beyond. Our journey starts in the English Renaissance, where we explore how the concept of a witch had been presented and appeared in legal cases and famous stories, up until the reign of Henry VIII - during which it's said Mother Shipton lived and died, seemingly attracting the ire of the crown!Yet, considering the lack of historical detail relating to the woman also known as Ursula Southeil, getting to the bottom of who she may have been soon becomes a moot point, as, despite the work of generations of historians, from the Jacobean era onwards, following the period of 'Witch Hunt fever' in England Mother Shipton quickly became a political tool and means of making money.Appearing as a stock character in 17th century pantomimes, with her visual representations based on woodcut images of Mr Punch, records show how things soon spun out of control, throwing much of what we think we know about her into question. For example, was she really born in a cave? Was her father the Devil, or a necromancer, or perhaps the wizard Merlin? And what about her prophecies, almost all of which kept on coming uncannily true?Prepare yourself for an episode full of surprises, from flying goats and fifteen minute bouts of flatulence to mass hysteria and bucket-loads of bare faced lies. But sitting behind it all is a serious point: if history is written by the victors, what have the English ruling classes had to say about Mother Shipton across the last five centuries? And with this in mind, do all the things people believe about Mother Shipton have anything to do with her actual life and legacy, or everything to do with our own historic fears and prejudice? The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Please note this is the second part of a two-part episode. Find part one, Episode 50, right here. There exists a curious tension at Roosters Brewing Company, one that few other breweries have to navigate in terms of both their identity, and their position within the UK beer market. On the one hand this is a resolutely contemporary brewery, creating modern IPAs as delicious and precise as the cask ales loved by locals it built its reputation upon. But there's also the fact that this is a three-decade old brewery, with a considerable legacy established by its previous owner, Sean Franklin, and its flagship beer, Yankee. It's a persistent problem, one that's always snapping at the heels of twin brothers, Tom and Ol Fozard—the commercial director and head brewer, respectively—who took on this considerable stewardship when, along with their dad, Ian, they acquired the brewery in 2011.Since the acquisition they have done their best to put their stamp on it, while also clinging to the story and substance that makes Roosters Brewery what it is today. They've achieved this through beers such as their best-selling IPA, Baby Faced Assassin, and by relocating the brewery from its original home in the town of Knaresborough to a new site, complete with an American-style taproom, on the outskirts of Harrogate, North Yorkshire. In 2023 they celebrated the brewery's 30th birthday in style, holding a beer festival at the brewery called Suds With Buds. They were joined by contemporaries from both sides of the Atlantic, and ably demonstrated that this is a brewery that more than holds its weight within the highly competitive British beer market. Please enjoy this bumper length interview with Tom and Ol, split into two parts for brevity. This is a candid, warts and all account of one of the UK's most interesting breweries, and a fascinating look at one that is navigating an industry under so much pressure, as it continually seeks to define itself within it.We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Loughran Brewers Select. In this episode Rob Hindmarsh, Managing Director of Knaresborough Movers, discusses how he got involved within the industry 30 years ago at the tender age of 15, working for a local removal company during weekends and school holidays. The day Rob left school he started full time employment with K.W. Removals in Ripon (sadly no longer trading), where he worked for 13 years, starting as a porter, then as a 7.5 tonne driver once he had past his test at the age of 17, and moving onto HGV's at 21. Rob also covered the sales and warehouse side while his boss was away. Today Rob owns Knaresborough Movers, offering local and nationwide removals, containerised storage, trade assistance, and is a member of Move Assured. Rob runs 2 vehicles (but is currently looking to add a 5 container HGV) and has a full-time crew of 3, and a part-time crew member. Rob's biggest challenge was building up the business and taking the step to obtaining his operator licence, moving from luton vans to HGV, and I ask if it was worth it? Another challenge (today) is staffing, finding youngsters that have an interest and a passion for the industry as a whole. Rob wouldn't change anything from his moving past, he has enjoyed every minute and everything he has ever done in removals. Rob's highpoint is starting his own company within the industry, which he has built upon reputation, word of mouth and customer reviews. The one thing Rob would like to change within the industry is to have it seen as a profession, but he also has a real passion to get youngsters (school leavers) into the industry, even at a work experience and apprenticeship level. The advice Rob would give himself just starting out within the industry again is to go for it and don't look back, it's the best thing he's ever done, and he will always be grateful to his boss for the opportunity. In the next 5 years Rob would like to grow the business, and he would like his son to come onboard too. Industry wise, Rob hopes the industry can encourage more youngsters to join. Outside of the industry Rob participates in sidecar racing (having previously participating in autograss racing in cars for many years) and he has a 2006 Subaru Impreza that he takes to car shows. And as always we end Moving Matters with a funny moving story, two in fact, and both are of a sexual nature! Enjoy! The cycle of blooming, falling, disintegrating, resting, reforming, growing, blooming... this song has a beautiful criss-cross of lines, so the first line burrows into the second line, while the second line starts low and grounded, then rises hopefully above the first. What is needed to make England a healthier nation? And why are two committees concerned about government use of secondary legislation? Find out in this month's House of Lords Podcast. What is needed to make England a healthier nation? We hear from Karren Brady and Phil Willis – Baroness Brady and Lord Willis of Knaresborough – this month on the report just issued by their committee. The Lords Sport and Recreation Committee has called for a new national plan for sport, health and wellbeing. Matt and Amy find out why this is needed and what more needs to be done.‘We have some of the greatest sporting leagues in the world… We're producing world-class people at the top end, but in reality, that is a very small pool of people. And whilst they are excelling, the vast majority who are going to our schools, who are going into our youth clubs and our sports clubs, and indeed those who are doing nothing at all, are flatlining. And the result of which is that we are seeing a more obese nation, a less active nation, an unhealthy nation. And the cost on the NHS of all that is absolutely enormous… We're not asking for billions of pounds, we're asking basically for you to reorganize the money that is spent and to focus it where it is best needed at grassroots.' Lord Willis Baroness Brady also shares her thoughts on her experience on the Sport and Recreation Committee‘It was also great that everybody on the committee came from a very different perspective and has very different expertise, which is what the Lords is all about. We're invited to come here by using our lifelong experience in our chosen field to look at legislation and hopefully make it better and recommend amendments to the government to change to improve them. So it was great to work with so many talented and incredibly knowledgeable people about their areas and come together with conclusions that cross-party we agreed.' Baroness Brady ‘Government by diktat'This month we also speak to Lord Blencathra and Lord Hodgson of Astley Abbots about the government's use of secondary legislation. The two committees they chair have recently warned about abuses of power by the executive and the need for a rebalancing of power back towards Parliament. Over the course of their discussion, they explain in detail the different concerns the committees have on the changing use of secondary legislation and why we should all be concerned at how it is being used.Go and read Hilary MantelThey also explain what secondary legislation is, other terms you may have heard like skeleton bills and Henry VIII powers and unlikely places to learn about them.‘Well, I'd give you one sentence. Go and read Hilary Mantel on the work of Thomas Cromwell and his relationship with the king.' Lord HodgsonGuidance or law?We also hear about recent examples of confusion that have arisen from secondary legislation and the use of guidance.‘SLSC are really concerned about guidance, which is advice, and regulation which is law. You have to obey the law, but do you have to obey guidance?... ‘Right back in the beginning [of the pandemic], there was a restriction on only one form of exercise per day to every person in the country, quite an important issue, but that was in guidance. The regulation had no restriction at all. So technically you could exercise as many times as you'd like, but the guidance said only once a day.‘Now, how is the man in the street gain understand the difference between those two?'
