Steeped in urban legend, the Los Feliz Murder Mansion - located in the affluent LA neighborhood of Los Feliz - was abandoned in December of 1959 following the grisly murder-suicide of two of its occupants and the attempted murder of one other. Rumor has it that the crime scene was never cleaned up and blood-stained objects sat abandoned in the house for years. A new owner did buy the house the year after the tragic event, but for some mysterious reason they chose to never actually move into the home, continuing to leave it abandoned in a state of disrepair. In recent years, the house continues with this trend of bad luck as new owner after new owner continues to be unable to move into the mansion. Is the entire neighborhood of Los Feliz cursed? In the 1880s, brothers August and Herman Schuenemann decided to pursue their dreams of becoming ship captains and move together from their hometown in rural Wisconsin to the mean streets of Chicago. Through hard work and grit, they were both eventually able to sail as captains in the most dangerous kind of work available at the time: Christmas Tree Ships. What made this work so dangerous, was that they would be sailing the tumultuous waters of Lake Michigan from Chicago to northern Michigan's evergreen forests to harvest trees to bring back to the city for Christmas. Very few ships were willing to make this journey as the ice, snow, and winter gales caused dangerous storms on the lake during this time of the year. SKIP TO 17:00 TO GET TO THE STORY Happy first episode of Spooky Season! This week, Aly tells Nat all about the most blood-soaked building in all of Austria: Moosham Castle. Built into a mountain in the forested countryside of Unternberg, this medieval spur castle has been the site of at least 45 battles between 1191 and 1675, including the infamously brutal German Peasants' War. If the bloodshed from multiple wars wasn't haunted enough for you, Moosham Castle was also the location of the imprisonment, trial, torture, and execution of the victims of the Zaubererjackl Witch Trials of 1681. These witch trials are set apart in history due to the demographic of its victims: 109 villagers were executed in just one year, with the majority being children and men. Following the witch trials, werewolf trials were held in this same area, leading to the execution and torture of even more men. Today, the castle has been preserved by a private buyer and remains open to the public as a piece of historical architecture; the torture room still intact with the original tools and instruments used against the werewolves and witches of Austria. Reports of ghostly apparitions and anguished screams still haunt the castle grounds, are you brave enough to step inside? In this episode, I talk to Emily from the Little Eaters Club about how to bump up the number of foods that her son Elliot eats. He's always been a little bit of a picky eater, but recently it's gotten worse and he's now only eating about 4 foods! Don't worry though, even though he's only eating a few bites at each meal, his growth has been normal and he weighs about the same as his twin brother. In this episode, I run through some examples of what you can say to your toddler to create a no pressure environment that gets them to eat. I give you some tips that will make meal time conversations a breeze, and help encourage your toddler to try new foods. Now, they may not try a new food the very first time it's offered to them, but with exposure and the phrases I'm sharing with you today, your child will learn a growth mindset and be more open to trying new foods in the future. Following these suggestions will create a pressure free environment that considers your toddler's feelings, and gets them to explore food at their own pace. The number one tip I find that works wonders on setting the right environment going into a meal, is to have no agenda of getting them to eat anything. This takes the pressure off of you, as the parent who's providing the food, and off your toddler, who's the one deciding how much they want to eat. When you approach mealtime, I want you to think “this is not about eating and nutrition at all” and when you get into that mindset, you can be more neutral in terms of how you speak to them. This removes some of that emotion that may make you say things that can be pressuring. Instead, the focus will now be on using factual statements only. I am here to help you reduce burnout and learn about yourself, as well as learn new techniques, receive encouragement and be a listening ear. I am a firm believer in having a healthy support system is a benefit to the whole unit. We will work together to enhance support skills by working on strengths and weaknesses, self care and goals. How will this be done? Every week there will be a new tip given and a call of action for you to try. (We will work on skills and techniques using goal orientation techniques.) Why do I do this? I am a Caregiver Support Coach because I saw a need that was not met. I noticed families and loved ones that needed extra support outside of family therapy. I also believe that everyone has the ability to attain those goals and with the guidance of a Support Coach it can happen. January Caregiver Tips Collaborative Care Do you participate in collaborative care? Collaborative care is an active interaction between professional and non-professional caregivers can maximize the quality of life for everyone involved. Having communication between everyone will help reach the goals needed. Ask if this is something that will help your situation. Experiencing caregiver stress? ------ Each one of these can be broken down Remember these 5 points: Take care of yourself Ask for help Be realistic about the situation Use respite care services Find emotional support Caregiving roles and demands are impacted by a number of factors including: Type of illness Long-distance caregiving Urban versus rural settings Different cultural approaches to caregiving Tip to reduce stress: Communicate Effectively It is important to communicate clearly, constructively and assertively. Use “I” messages and statements rather than “you” messages Respect the rights and feelings of others Be clear and specific Speak directly to the person Be a good listener Experiencing Tiredness? How often do you get a full eight hours of sleep that is recommended? Does your sleep happen a few minutes here and there during your limited alone time? Is your sleep disturbed because you get up at night to complete caregiving duties? Is your sleep disturbed because you can't fall asleep or stay asleep due to worrying about all the stressors that come with being a caregiver? Coping Skill Sleep has to be a priority. If you are having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep - talk to your physician. Pushing through each day will wear you out. It is important to learn to ask for help and prioritize getting breaks from caregiving, so that you can be the caregiver you want to be. Loneliness Long term caregiving often creates isolation. With no one to talk to day in and day out except the care receiver it is easy to lose a sense of yourself.
