[originally published on Patreon May 10, 2022; now you should check out Tanner's blog, Getting Spooked] Today I'm joined by a very special guest, Fortean expert Tanner Boyle (@TannerFBoyle1) to discuss some early high strangeness, and particularly a lot of the incredibly underdiscussed parapolitical angles to said phenomenon. We discuss the weird figures around the Mothman thing, the factories around Point Pleasant, the backgrounds of people like John Keel, Woodrow Derenberger, and Indrid Cold, and the Lanulos abduction story. We talk Bosco Nedelcovic, Union Carbide, COINTELPRO, men in black, the Hopkinsville goblins, the Flatwoods Monster, the recurring theme of weird connections between cryptozoology and espionage, and the alien abduction concept. We discuss certain salient aspects of the Betty and Barney Hill abduction, and the truly insane stories of several hypnosis experts.  At the end, we contemplate what's left of these stories and their possible utility as psychological operations. This week, we are going to look into a tale that has fascinated folks for decades, the story of Indrid Cold of Lanulos. Our first story occurred on a rainy Wednesday night on November 2nd 1966. A salesman named Woodrow Derenberger was driving home to Mineral Wells, West Virginia from Marietta, Ohio. At around 7:25PM, Woodrow claims that on the intersection of 77 and route 47 he spotted a strange dark gray craft, about 30 to 35 feet long and hovering about 10 inches above the ground. It passed him, then swerved in front of him blocking his path and forced him to stop. The craft had no windows or lights on it, it was charcoal colored and glistened when hit by Woodrow's headlights.Soon after landing a figure looking like a normal human male stepped out of a door of the craft. He had dark combed back hair, deeply tanned skin, and looked to be about 35-40 in age. He wore a blue zippered overcoat made of a shiny reflective material with a dark blue button shirt underneath and navy colored pants. The man approached Woodrow's right side of Woodrow's car and spoke to him telepathically asking him to roll down his window. He did so, and the craft reportedly lifted off and covered about 50 feet in the air.At this point the man smiled politely and crossed his arms then asked him many questions telepathically, while maintaining his smile and standing in the rain. Woodrow said that the man asked him many questions, such as who he was and where he lived. Woodrow said that he felt frightened but the man said not to be afraid. The man told Woodrow that his name was Cold and seemed to want to know more about the human race. He later revealed that he was from the planet Lanulos in the Galaxy of Ganymede. After their conversation, the craft landed and Cold walked back to it. Before entering the door, Cold informed Woodrow that he would visit him again and he did, many times over the years. Woodrow even wrote a book about his experiences “Visitors From Lanulos” It was in a later visit that Cold let Woodrow know his full name of Indrid Cold. Our second possible sighting occurred in Point Pleasant, West Virginia around the same time as the first sighting. The Lilly family had been reporting poltergeist activity in their home. They had also been seeing diamond shaped lights in the skies at night over their home. One night their daughter Linda woke from sleeping to a man standing over her. This is what Linda had to say about the encounter. "It was a man, a big man. Very broad. I couldn't see his face very well, but I could see that he was grinning at me. He walked around the bed and stood right over me. I screamed again and hid under the covers, when I looked again he was gone."In early November of 1966, an elderly man reported a similar sighting to the first to Mary Hyre's newspaper office in Point Pleasant. He claimed he and another workmen were driving home to Point Pleasant from their jobsite in Marietta Ohio. When they got near Parkersburg West Virginia on interstate 77 an elongated object appeared in the sky and descended directly in front of them, forcing them to stop their car. Soon after a normal looking man emerged from the craft. The man driving the car rolled down his window in disbelief, and the strange man approached them. He wore a black jacket, and kept a smile on his face with his arms crossed, hands hidden under his armpits just like Woodrow reported. The stranger asked who they were, where they were from, where they were going, and what time it was. He then strolled back to the dark cylinder and it rose quickly into the chill, drizzling sky. Actual Interview of Man who claims to have talked to an Alien - Indrid ColdThe odd events began on November 2, 1966, around 7:30pm when Woodrow Derenberger, a salesman for a sewing machine company was returning from Marietta, Ohio to his home in Mineral Wells, West Virginia along Highway I-77. When out of nowhere near Parkersburg, West Virginia another vehicle flew up and passed him. Woodrow described the vehicle as the strangest thing he'd ever seen and said it resembled a "kerosene lamp chimney" and that it was "flying" six inches off the ground. The vehicle came around him, turns sideways across both lanes of the road in front of him, gradually made him slow down to a stop onto the side of the road. After that, a door opens, and a grinning man steps out of the vehicle, the door shuts with a loud "thunk" behind him. A few seconds later the vehicle climbs 40 feet into the air above the highway. Derenberger says that the dark suited man walked to the right side of his truck, spoke to him telepathically, and asked him to roll down his window and was saying that he meant Derenberger no harm. The strange man said that he was called "Cold". Indrid Cold has been linked to real phenomenon and many people claimed to have encountered him. Some say that there is only one grinning man, some say that there are many, but all eyewitnesses agree on one thing, he will scare the hell out of you. Eyewitnesses believe that Indrid Cold is one of the mysterious men in black, an alien, some other unknown creature or all of the above. Wherever Indrid Cold has been seen, UFO sightings, disasters, or other strange phenomenon seems to follow.Indrid Cold, commonly known as The Smiling Man, is an allegedly humanoid entity. The nickname comes from the being's tendency to smile to almost everyone that encountered him. It is said that he still visits West Virginia to this day.The Grinning Man is reported to be human-like in appearance, though is commonly associated with UFO activity and is sometimes believed to be an alien. It is also believed possible that he is connected with the Men In Black. In his first sighting, he was described as being over six feet tall and wearing a reflective, green suit with a black belt. He had a dark complexion and small, beady eyes set far apart. He was described as not having any nose, ears, or hair. [1] In his second known encounter, his suit was said to be blue instead of green, but still retained its reflective property. [2] Along with that he was described as looking perfectly natural with slicked back hair, a coat with the top two buttons unbuttoned, and having pants lighter than the coat but still the same material. He was also described as being quite tan, though not dark, and looking like any normal human being.According to reports made by Woodrow Derenberger, Indrid Cold came from a planet named Lanulos in the Genemedes galaxy, and that there were two other "grinning men" by the names of Demo Hassan and Karl ArdoFirst SightingIndrid Cold was first seen on October 16, 1966, when two boys, Martin "Mouse" Munov and James "Jimmy" Yanchitis, in New Jersey were walking on Fourth Street when they saw a surreal figure standing near a fence. As they walked closer, the figure was a tall bald man wearing a metal green suit who was staring right at them with a huge grin. The idiosyncratic man chased them until they got away from him. UFO sightings were also reported around the area. [1][2]"Jimmy nudged me...and said "Who's that guy standing behind you?" I looked around and there he was...behind that fence. Just standing there. He pivoted around and looked right at us. Then he grinned a big old grin." [1]According to Night Mind, the boys only recalled the more frightening details of their encounter later on. They would recall that the man in the green suit was unusually tall and had unnatural facial features, such as the lack of ears and a nose. Even though most sources mention the New Jersey sighting, Indrid Cold and the grinning man could be completely different entities. On November 2, 1966, in Parkersburg, West Virginia (around the same area and time as the Mothman came about), Woodrow Derenberger was driving his way home on Interstate 77 until he heard a crash. Then, an unidentifiable vehicle appeared to land in front of his truck. He described it as "an old-fashioned kerosene lamp chimney, flaring at both ends, narrowing down to a small neck and then enlarging in a great bulge in the center."[2] The Grinning Man came out of the vehicle with a dark tan, and walked up to Derenberger and telepathically said his name was "Indrid Cold" and he meant no harm. Cold said he just wanted to know more about the human race and he would visit Derenberger again. After the encounter, Derenberger stated that Cold revealed he was from the planet Lanulos in the galaxy of Genemedes. [2]ExplanationsIt is commonly believed that Indrid may be an alien entity and is supported by its close connection with UFO activity and with Derenberger's sighting. It is also said by Derenberger that the Grinning Man is in fact a species of aliens with multiple "grinning men". Although, this is unlikely unless the aliens are shapeshifters, because it would be almost impossible for a race to take the exact same evolutionary path as us.However, the third sighting by the Lilly family suggests instead that it may be a ghost or spirit of some kind and was connected with poltergeist activity happening in the residence. It may be a prank that went too far, or a man with a mental illness. Others believe that it is a normal human man or a hoax based off of the popularity and fear of the Mothman, who had been first sighted around the same time.Taunia Derenberger mentions in her book[3] that Indrid Cold might also be known as "Valiant Thor", who spent 3 years at the Pentagon.

Indrid Cold AKA The Smiling Man, is an allegedly humanoid entity from a planet named Lanulos in the Genemedes galaxyIndrid Cold, commonly known as The Smiling Man, is an allegedly humanoid entity. The nickname comes from the being's tendency to smile to almost everyone that encountered him. It is said that he still visits West Virginia to this day.DescriptionThe Grinning Man is reported to be human-like in appearance, though is commonly associated with UFO activity and is sometimes believed to be an alien. After the encounter, Derenberger stated that Cold revealed he was from the planet Lanulos in the galaxy of Genemedes. Third SightingDuring the same period in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, the Lilly family had been reporting that poltergeist activity in their home, such as diamond shaped lights. The Lilly's daughter, Linda, was sleeping one night and awoke to see a man standing over her."It was a man, a big man. Very broad. I couldn't see his face very well, but I could see that he was grinning at me. He walked around the bed and stood right over me. I screamed again and hid under the covers, when I looked again he was gone." [2]ExplanationsIt is commonly believed that Indrid may be an alien entity and is supported by its close connection with UFO activity and with Derenberger's sighting.

In November of 1967, on a dark and rainy night night on Route 77 in West Virginia, traveling salesman Woodrow Derenberger had an encounter with a UFO and the odd, overly friendly pilot of said UFO. A man named Indrid Cold. Reported as a side story in John Keel's now legendary book The Mothman Prophecies, which chronicled all the high strangeness happening in West Virginia in those days, the legend of Indrid Cold has taken on a life of its own. And for good reason. In this episode we focus on Woodrow Derenberger's own book Visitors From Lanulos, which is possibly the silliest book ever written. We learn about Woodrow's longtime friendship with Indrid Cold and his fellow Lanulessians, his visits to Lanulos itself, space-green-beans, space-department-stores, space-families, and a whole host of other nonsense. It turns out the "grinning man" of creepypasta lore is far friendlier and far more "normal" than most people assume. Which makes it all the more strange that as this beautiful friendship was developing, Woody's life began falling apart. Stranger still: there's witnesses. Sort of.

SKIP TO 6:29 TO GET TO THIS WEEK'S EPISODE! Welcome to Episode 83 of Let's Get Haunted: “Indrid Cold: The Grinning Man”. New Jersey in the late 1960s was a hotbed of paranormal activity and UFO sightings. 1966 in particular was a very active year, with many people from all over the state reporting unidentified objects in the sky and on the ground. But New Jersey was not the only state plagued by UFOs during this time. West Virginia famously became the site of Mothman between Nov. 15 to Dec. 15, 1966. But did you know that The Mothman wasn't the only weird creature sighted during this timeframe? This week, Aly tells Nat all about Indrid Cold, the alleged alien entity who visited earth in 1966 and may still be here today. What was his purpose? Why was he here? We speak to the daughter of Woodrow Derenberger, the first person to interact in a meaningful way with Indrid on November 2, 1966. Tune in now to hear the full story and the interview! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Mothman! Well, we're pretty sure "Mothman" isn't any of those things, neither a moth nor a man, or some unholy combination of the two. If the descriptions by over 100 witnesses are accurate and the symptoms of seeing such a sight are related, then whatever this creature is, it's abilities may go beyond even what is considered possible for an earthly cryptid. Magical flight, a burning, mesmerizing gaze, and haunting dreams are some of his reported traits, but is clairvoyance also one of them? What if Mothman knew your fate, but wasn't capable or allowed to tell you? And for an even bigger stretch of the imagination, what if Scott goes "off the chain" in this episode? Now, this may all seem like silly balderdash to your sophisticated and skeptical nature, but what kind of hosts would we be if we couldn't deliver a tale of a real monster in time for Samhain? After all, it is Halloween. Tonight's Quote: “UFO’s do not seem to exist as tangible, manufactured objects. They do not conform to the accepted natural laws of our environment. They seem to be nothing more than transmogrifications tailoring themselves to our ability to understand." — John A. All legends are local in a way, and when one local person tells a tale of a strange encounter, it can be a cause for skeptical snickers from the townsfolk. When more than a hundred people from the same region all see the same thing, it can lead to books, a major Motion Picture and even an annual festival. Such is the case with Point Pleasant, West Virginia and the Ohio River Valley's own "Mothman" — whose local sightings turned into national legend. There are several elements that contribute to the intense curiosity that still surrounds the stories of the Mothman, himself described as a winged, humanoid creature with glowing red eyes and a sympathetic, if mysterious nature. One of them is the sudden appearance of a friendly, inter-dimensional road tripper named Indrid Cold who just wants to get to know you better and may be searching for a cryptid on the loose . Another is the unsettling thought that these encounters may have portended a disaster that took the lives of 46 people exactly 13 months later. Tonight's Quote: “Human beings are under the control of a strange force that bends them in absurd ways, forcing them to play a role in a bizarre game of deception.” - — Jacques Vallée, Computer Scientist, Venture Capitalist and noted Ufologist Show Links: We've found that some sites are not showing these links as clickable unless they are URLs, so until those outlets improve their show notes section, we are providing actual URLs next to the clickable description of each link to make things easier for our listeners!
