Under andra världskriget skickades 70 000 finska barn till Sverige för att undkomma krigets umbäranden. Det var med stor tveksamhet som de finska mödrarna skickade bort ofta mycket små barn och saknaden efter barnen blev plågsamt stor. Några tusen barn skulle aldrig komma tillbaka till sina biologiska föräldrar.Barnförflyttningarna skedde på svenskt initiativ, eftersom det fanns en känsla att Sverige gjort för lite för sitt utsatta grannland. Att det var traumatiskt för små barn att tvingas lämna sina mödrar för att hamna i en främmande familj med ett främmande språk verkar inte bekymrat de svenska välgörarna särskilt mycket.I detta avsnitt av Historia Nu samtalar programledaren Urban Lindstedt med historikern Ann Nehlin, vid Mälardalens universitet. Hon är aktuell med boken De finska krigsbarnen – Ett nordiskt familjedrama.Vinterkriget bröt ut den 30 november 1939 när Sovjetunionen anföll Finland och pågick fram till mars 1940. Senare anföll Finland Sovjetunionen i juni 1941 för att återta förlorat territorium. Fortsättningskriget skulle pågå till 19 september 1944. Barnförflyttningarna från Finland till Sverige organiserades av olika hjälporganisationer, som Centrala Finlandshjälpen i Sverige och den Nordiska Hjälpcentralen i Finland. Redan under vinterkriget började barn från östra Finland anlända till Sverige. Vissa barn var undernärda och i behov av vård. Mer än 5 000 barn var sjuka och fick vårdas på sjukhus och sanatorier, eftersom många av dem led av bentuberkulos och andra former av tuberkulos.Barnen placerades över hela Sverige, och mottagandet var överväldigande. Många barn hamnade i fosterfamiljer, medan andra bodde på barnhem. För de flesta barnen var tiden i Sverige positiv, men för en del blev separationen från deras biologiska föräldrar traumatisk och det kom att prägla deras liv.Många av de svenska familjerna tog emot barnen som sina egna och utvecklade starka band med dem. Brevväxlingar mellan de svenska och finska familjerna ger en inblick i deras erfarenheter och känslor. För de finska mödrarna var längtan efter sina barn stark, samtidigt som de försökte övertyga sig själva om att det var till barnens bästa de hade skickat dem till Sverige.De flesta av dessa barn kom från arbetarklassen, med många arbetande mödrar där fäderna var vid fronten. Barnen kom till totala främlingar i Sverige som inte alltid förstod sig på barnen. Välbeställda barn kunde ofta placeras hos släktingar och vänner i Sverige.Efter kriget krävde den finska staten att alla barn som befann sig i Sverige skulle skickas tillbaka. De flesta svenska familjer fogade sig efter det beslutet men en del tog strid och försökte få behålla de barn de hade tagit hand om, ibland under många år. Gravensteen is a beautiful medieval castle built in 1180 and located in Ghent, Belgium. This historical landmark has been repurposed over the years as a court, mint, prison, and factory. With all of this history, what stands out the most? An event in November of 1949 when 138 students from the University of Ghent stormed the castle to protest a hot topic: the price of beer. During the second part of the episode, we go on a journey told from the source, Aimo Koivunen. Using a translated version of his memoir, we live two weeks during WWII where Aimo escapes the pursuit of the Soviets while overdosing on methamphetamine, a drug commonly used during the war to combat battle fatigue. On this harrowing journey, Aimo manages to out-ski his troop, find himself with no food or weapons, ski through the middle of a Soviet camp, burn down a house, and blow himself up...twice.
