This episode is a recording of a live conversation between Thibault and Allison Schulnik, reknowned painter, ceramicist, animator, and filmmaker based out in the desert in Sky Valley, CA. They talk about trying to live a dumb phone life, being witchy, and delve into Schulnik's artistic practice. Schulnik's latest show, "Dumb Phone" was at The Pit in Los Angeles and can be found on their website. The conversation was recorded on December 12, 2024. About Allison Schulnik Allison Schulnik choreographs her subjects in compositions that embody a spirit of the macabre, a Shakespearian comedy/tragedy of love, death and farce. The subjects often stare back at the audience and study them as they are in turn studied, aware of their ancestors from the Grand Theme works of the past, the genre paintings that inform them. Although a haunting sense of foreboding, discomfort and unease is palpable, a sense of understanding, compassion and hopefulness for her cast of characters is still evident in the heavy impasto paintings. Her sculptural use of oil paint references her clay-animation background, as a motion-like sensibility affords her paintings unparalleled depth and energy.

Diary of Doom is closing out 2022 with our seemingly omnipresent guest, August West, by talking about a band that nobody has ever heard of before: Kyuss. After paying tribute to our friend, John Hopkins, and his mother, Reita, and running through some of their favorite albums of the year (highlighting Steve Albini's love for Dead Meadow), the dank duo delves into the short but sweet discography of one of the cornerstone bands of heavy music, touching on how exactly to say Kyuss, why legal battles suck the air out of bands, Kyuss Lives!, petition for John Garcia to front Danzig, how many Allen wrenches they have laying around, and a five-way battle of "Yeah!" Oh, and Dylan nearly passed out (again!) at some recent concerts. Albums covered: Sons of Kyuss (1990) Wretch (1991) Blues for the Red Sun (1992) Welcome to Sky Valley (1994) ...And the Circus Leaves Town (1995) Hope everybody is braving the cold right now and has a safe and happy new year!

Today, the program originates from Sky Valley, Georgia. Bob, and his wife, Lori, are there for a few days getting the last of their personal belongings ready to move, and by God's Grace, the closing for the sale of their Georgia home should be completed this Friday.
Kyuss Welcome to Sky Valley For Eric Cinnamon

New episode out now! Ryan Musser and Stefan Henskens, from the band Astral Cult, are back to talk about one of their favorite albums, and one that was a huge influence on their music. We're talking about Kyuss and their 1994 album Welcome (To Sky Valley). Coming out of the deserts of Southern California, Kyuss made sure to incorporate the harsh, remote, and vast landscape into their sound. Kicking your ass with a wall of sound, Kyuss left ears ringing, hearts pounding, and adrenaline rushing, while being as chill as possible. A perfect album from start to finish, if you're looking for an album that is heavy, groovy, a little odd, but something that you can drive to, look no further.
This week we’re discussing Kyuss. While known by many as the band who introduced the world to Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Kyuss also helped push forward stoner metal and “desert rock.” This was a comfort episode for Alex, who’s been a fan for years, but Mike has mixed feelings about the band. Heavy and satisfying band. Steve and Remfry discuss the phenomenal third studio album from desert rock legends Kyuss. The band invented and perfected stoner rock, a sub-genre that has since gone on to inspire countless bands and entire festival bills (no Kyuss? No Desertfest!) Alongside 1992's Blues for the Red Sun, Welcome to Sky Valley is generally considered their greatest record. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
