Born in West Philadelphia, Reef the Lost Cauze came up in hip-hop as a lethal battle-rap MC. He defeated opponents in all types of venues, from school grounds to grimy back alleys to professional competitions. His first two albums, The High Life (2002) and Invisible Empire (2003), were released locally and put his name on the map for Philadelphia's underground rap scene. In the years that followed his third album, a few local mixtapes were released, but the Philadelphia MC had success in doing several collaborations and features. He was invited into the Philadelphia crew JuJu Mob, who released their 2005 album Black Candles on Eastern Conference, as well as the underground super-collective Army of the Pharaohs.Reef the Lost Cauze has released 13 albums in total, the latest of which - The Triumphant - dropped earlier this year, and is his most introspective and reflective to date. With this powerful work, Reef continues to pave a legacy of one of the finest MCs around. Few have the rhyme and flow talent, but it is the stories he tells, and the perspective he offers you to share for a moment that truly sets him apart. Please join me as we spend time with Philadelphia's own, Reef the Lost Cauze.Be sure to catch him at Philly Music Fest on Fri 10/25 at Milkboy Philly along with (friends of the show) Kuf Knotz & Christine Elise, Queasy, and Catbite. Or whenever you can get the chance to see him perform. You will be amazed!Text us your thoughts on this episode, and who should be OUR #NextFavBand...As always, our hope is to bring you "your next favorite band". Dan talks to Chris Pires, drummer for Philly ska-punks Catbite, in lieu of their Philly Music Fest appearance. Chris talks about convncing his parents to let him have a drum kit, all the different acts he's played with, and how Catbite formed out of nowhere as a "thing to do". Chris also gets into the dynamics of a band relationship, and the importance of having real, adult conversations amongst bandmembers about what you want out of a band and out of life. Catbite are headlining the 10/25 Friday Philly Music Fest show at Milkboy with Reef The Lost Cauze, Kuf Knotz and Christine, and Queasy. Go to Philly Music Fest's site for tix. Catbite are currently on tour in Europe with The Slackers, with West Coast dates planned for the rest of 2024. 'Want To Play A Song?: Live On 25 O'Clock Vol. 1' is out now exclusively on Bandcamp. It features 10 original performances from the podcast's archives, and all the proceeds go to support Philly Music Fest's charitable giving.

Reef the Lost Cauze has a new album called "The Triumphant" and he says that it is the album that he has been trying to make for years. He joined us to talk about the intentional approach he took towards writing and recording it. He described the sometimes painful process he went through to write it and the emphasis that he placed on giving his audience a variety of narratives and perspectives. And he discusses the resilience and hope that is woven throughout the project. We're gonna talk about all that and Reef's album pick for this episode - the third LP from another Philly legend - Beanie Sigel's "The B.Coming".

Hip Hop and Sports Entertainment at it's finest!!!
Rapper Reef the Lost Cauze, writer and producer John Morrison, and comedian Darin Patterson join Ken to pay tribute to the greatest rap group of all-time, De La Soul. Why was their image as the "hippies of hip-hop" so misguided and wrong? How was their music in the Library of Congress but not available on Itunes for over twenty years? How did three childhood friends from Long Island, with only one platinum album to their name and zero presence on digital platforms, end up as one of the most influential groups of all-time? Listen in and find out!
Rapper Reef the Lost Cauze stops by to discuss the career of Luther Campell and 2 Live Crew. How did a block party DJ become first a hip hop pioneer and then a champion of free speech? Why was he willing to go to prison for his beliefs? Why did Bruce Springsteen allow Luther to sample "Born in the USA" at a time when he was famous for never licensing his music? Reef's mom likes WHICH 3 Live Crew song the most? Listen up!

BANG! @southernvangard #radio Ep315! Doe and Meeks took a break last week and actually enjoyed the Super Bowl for once - no Tom Brady, its was Rams vs. Bengals, Dre and company for the halftime show, and lest not forget about the crip walking on the 50 yard line in front of the entire world. These were just a few of the many reasons that proved it was worth our time off. That said we're back at it this week with a ton of new music and the best color commentary this side of the NFL. BANG! @southernvangard #radio Ep227! Hey ho there folks, it’s that time of the week, so WALCOME to you all! Doe & Meeks have you covered with all the latest raw ish here on Ep227, and there’s quite a bit of it this week as as our scheduled interviewee for our Thurs interview session was a straight NO SHOW. Their loss, not ours nor yours - that just means you get a longer, plentiful mix this week and we get to talk more trash. We have yet another WORLD EXCLUSIVE for you - from the BIG TURKS Deluxe Edition that was just announced this week! The cut is a remix of “Turkish Delight” which originally featured PLANET ASIA - but now has a verse that is straight silly from Chi-town’s CHRIS CRACK. Speaking of, if you need that interview fix this week - you can go back and listen to our interview with Chris from a few weeks ago, or check our recent interview with Turks’ member JAMAL GASOL OR check out last weeks interview with the one and only JAZZSOON. There’s plenty to go around folks, so pull up to the table, grab a plate, dig in and don’t forget to say a blessing ‘cause we SHORE IS THANKFUL for that #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #ThriceAWeek #WeAreTheGard // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mixshow #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACK Recorded live October 13, 2019 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #soundcloud #youtube #spotifypodcast #googlepodcasts #stitcherradio #mixcloud #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard twitter/IG: @southernvangard @jondoeatl @cappuccinomeeks Talk Break Inst. - "FTL" - Stro Elliot "Flood The Block" - Stu Bangas ft. Yes or no? LOL. We're shouting out the aliens today. They travel from far far away and get no credit. So if they can read or hear this mix. I'm dedicating this mix to them. I mean come on, to be traveling through space like that, you have to be bored out of your mind or homesick. So why not tune into btrtoday.com and kill some time. Instead of just the world, let's go farther than that. I'm sure they are listening. They wanna know how I do it. Put together some great mixes. They're probably scared to talk to me or abduct me because I might ruin their evil plans. I'm always yelling and screaming. They don't want that on their spacecraft. LOL. You might see a mothership in your lifetime before the Knicks win another championship. With an amazing ear for beats as well as the lyrical capacity to demolish any concept or competitor, Reef has more than made his mark on the Philly hip-hop scene and beyond. Now ten albums deep in the game, not even counting the AOTP discog, EPs, or mixtapes, Reef’s got a lot to talk about, whether it’s politics, autism, his creative process, or his classic verse on the Snowgoons’ latest “Goon Bap.” Bonus for all the underground Philly heads - find out where Chief Kamachi’s been and if Juju Mob is reconvening. twitter.com/lostcauze twitter.com/seven3zero
