What up Fellas!

Your hosts this episode: Patrique OptimalAudio Once again the Living Off Borrowed Time Podcast begins their end of year recap with their honorable mentions for 2022. Discussing their biggest let downs, surprises, and projects that just missed the big top 10 spots of their year end lists. Going over releases by Billy Woods, Freddie Gibbs, Charli XCX, Joey Bada$$, Young Nudy, Griselda, and more. Along the way they also highlight the Duwap Kaine having the best album cover of the year, how the best Griselda projects aren't coming from Griselda, the complete mishandling of SoFaygo, and the shocking twist of Patrique actually liking a Taylor Swift project. Your hosts this episode: Patrique OptimalAudio After a needed break for a terrible year the LOBT pod is back to recap the year in music! In this episode they cover it all from the politically powerful products of Billy Woods, the similar attempts made by Denzel Curry, Drake going off the rails in terms of style, and just not being up to hating that much this year (though there's certainly still plenty to talk about in that regard). As well, the podcast leaves the realm of Rap to also discuss Animal Collective and Beach House's recent great output and Charli XCX slightly slipping this year. 2022 is almost halfway over! To mark the occasion, Matt and Jason picked their favorite records released this year for this special discussion. Jason picked Soul Glo's “Diaspora Problems” (March 25) because it's high-energy, it bends genres, and crams a lot of righteous fury into its lyrics. Matt's loved the work of Benny the Butcher for a long time, so his latest release, “Tana Talk 4” (March 10), is a shoo-in for Matt's favorite records of the year. In this episode, we talk a lot about hardcore music made by people of color, what makes rap like Benny's timeless, and how it feels to find music that just hits all your buttons. We'd also love it if you'd rate and review the show on iTunes, ‘cause it means more people can find the show and love it, too! In Episode 104, we are discussing another recent marquee Griselda release, Benny's long-anticipated Tana Talk 4. With the help of long-time business associates in Daringer and The Alchemist, many thought TT4 would be a complete return to the grimy street roots of Benny's most celebrated works, in Tana Talk 3 and The Plugs I Met. However, what we ended up getting on Tana Talk 4 was a bit of a blend of Benny's core street content, and his later-career wisdom of past albums like Burden of Proof. Griselda Records' Benny the Butcher has returned with a scorching new song entitled "Johnny P's Caddy", featuring J. Cole and produced by The Alchemist. With such an all-star line-up, this track still lives up to the anticipation with passionate vocal performances and sublimely crafted production. Serving as the lead single for his upcoming album Tana Talk 4, "Johnny P's Caddy" finds the Benny and Cole trading equally powerful verses, demonstrating the importance of healthy competition in hip-hop. The instrumental for "Johnny P's Caddy" creates a motivational mood with rich vocal samples underscored by uplifting strings. Beneath, The Alchemist brings in his characteristically gritty, sturdy percussion and pairs it with infectious bass, crafting a strong foundation for the two rappers' fiery vocals. Both Benny and Cole deliver intense verses that are packed with dense wordplay, yet come across as effortless and smooth. Their performances reflect that they are two rappers currently at the top of their game, and it is engrossing to hear them attack this beat with such ferocity and clarity. "Johnny P's Caddy" will appear on Tana Talk 4, which is likely to be one of the most talked about records in hip-hop this year. If this song is any indication, we have much to look forward to in the full album, which continues Benny the Butcher's storied Tana Talk album series.
