This week I am speaking with Alex McCrobs aka. Sober Yoga Girl- Our discussion centred heavily on alcohol, where we discussed Alex's relationship with alcohol throughout her life and the varying factors that influenced that relationship, including her environment and the people she surrounded herself with. As someone who has had to adjust her relationship with alcohol, I felt it important to bring attention to the impact it can have when we overindulge. Often we 'normalize' the amount we drink because those around us drink the same, but this does not guarantee that we have a 'healthy' relationship with alcohol. Often our mood and other aspects of our life can be unknowingly impacted by how much we drink. While Alex quit alcohol entirely, I like to minimise my intake to a healthy level- everyone's experiences and choices are different, but we must do what suits us and works for us within our lives. Since adjusting her relationship with alcohol, Alex has since created her own community and business, both of which centre on that which she's most passionate about- yoga. By locating herself in Bali, she has succeeded in creating an environment and a circle of people suited to her newfound love for life. We also touched briefly on Alex's experience with bipolar and various habits she has incorporated every day to minimize its effect on her- Check it out and give it a listen. Wishing you nothing but the best in life SSS x
Finding your purpose and meaning in life will help you transition to a life-long recovery and sobriety. A purpose might be an activity, self-improvement goal, or an impactful pursuit, and it's a great way to avoid a relapse. Addiction is a symptom of something wrong and a lack of purpose in life. It is an attempt to fill the void with something that makes us feel alive. However, drugs are just a coping mechanism and will impact your ability to find meaning in life, leading you to self-destruction. Becoming sober and finding meaning in your life is pivotal. Anyone who has gone through sobriety breakthroughs can attest to that. Finding out why you're here is the key to overcoming addiction and living a sober life. Anything is possible when you are sober! Join the conversation with Alex McRobert as she shares her journey, pivotal moments, and how sobriety helped her find her purpose and meaning in life. In this rendition of The Way Out we've got an incredibly inspiring and relatable interview with person in long term recovery, and the one and only Sober Yoga Girl, Alex McRobert AKA Alex McRobs for those of you who are social media inclined. Alex, a self-proclaimed and quintessential party girl since high school, shares her journey to and through sobriety to this point, which included addressing her mental health in addition to her true reckoning with her relationship alcohol, which over time turned from relatively harmless and consequence free partying to a progressive and indeed destructive force in her life. The instrumental move for Alex was joining one year no beer, a community of people who were actively working on eliminating alcohol from their lives. This is where the magic happened, where Alex began to hear the recovery and sobriety journeys of those who have gone down the path before her and of those who were starting that journey alongside her. What started out as a 28-day sobriety goal, turned into 90 days, which has now spanned more than two years and counting. Finding her true purpose, which is operating her Mindful Life Practice and Sober Curious Yoga School, sprang from her decision to share her recovery journey publicly, which prompted folks to reach out to Alex to help them on their own quest to sobriety and recovery, thus integrating Yoga and Recovery coaching into a blended model that brings her students on a path to recovery and wellness. Without question, Alex's decision to get sober and then share her journey to sobriety openly has not only transformed her own life, but the lives of a growing number of people she's been able to reach as a result, so listen up as Alex McRobs Recovers Out Loud with us, right now. Trigger warning: discussion of trauma. In this episode, Alex explains what trauma informed yoga teaching is. It seems like an overwhelmingly big word, but in reality, everyone CAN be a trauma informed yoga teacher, and everyone SHOULD be a trauma informed yoga teacher. One in four participants in a yoga class is likely to have survived trauma, and we have no idea who they may be in our classes. They may have experienced sexual assault, physical assault, abuse as a child, or even complex trauma such as narcisstic abuse survivors. Major trauma aside, in reality, everyone carries some level of stress, sadness and grief within them. As trauma-informed yoga teachers, we can make sure we create a safe space for all yoga students. In this episode, Alex explains some of the key aspects of trauma-informed or trauma-sensitive teaching. If this episode interests you, Alex will be teaching an indepth lecture on this subject as part of her 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training, Module 4 - the Heart Chakra.
