Drinks in hand, santa hats on heads, Theo and Rob attempt to spread some festive cheer. Rob shares his Christmas single, Theo reflects on a recent carol-based embarrassment, and they make some new year's resolutions (which, characteristically, range from the trivial to the profound). They also attempt to round out the year with a win, in a nail-biting tussle with the Guardian quick crossword setter. Thanks for your company in 2024 – may your festive seasons be merry and we'll see you on the other side. Our closing music comes from Spinning Jenny, with their fabulous cover of Sia's 'Santa's Coming for Us'. The Armour of Light - Ken Follett  The long-awaited sequel to A Column of Fire, The Armor of Light, heralds a new dawn for Kingsbridge, England, where progress clashes with tradition, class struggles push into every part of society, and war in Europe engulfs the entire continent and beyond.  The Spinning Jenny was invented in 1770, and with that, a new era of manufacturing and industry changed lives everywhere within a generation. A world filled with unrest wrestles for control over this new world order: A mother's husband is killed in a work accident due to negligence; a young woman fights to fund her school for impoverished children; a well-intentioned young man unexpectedly inherits a failing business; one man ruthlessly protects his wealth no matter the cost, all the while war cries are heard from France, as Napoleon sets forth a violent master plan to become emperor of the world. As institutions are challenged and toppled in unprecedented fashion, ripples of change ricochet through our characters' lives as they are left to reckon with the future and a world they must rebuild from the ashes of war.    Rambling Man: My Life on the Road - Billy Connolly   Being a Rambling Man was what I always wanted to be, to live the way I damn well pleased. I've met the weirdest and most wonderful people who walk the Earth, seen the most bizarre and the most fantastic sights - and I've rarely come across something I couldn't get a laugh at. I don't think I've ever had a bad trip. Well, apart from in the 1970s, but that's a whole other story . . .  In his joyful new book, Billy explores this philosophy and how it has shaped him, and he shares hilarious new stories from his lifetime on the road. From riding his trike down America's famous Route 66, building an igloo on an iceberg in the Arctic, playing elephant polo (badly) in Nepal and crashing his motorbike (more than once), to eating witchetty grubs in Australia, being serenaded by a penguin in New Zealand, and swapping secrets in a traditional Sweat Lodge ritual in Canada, Rambling Man is a truly global adventure with the greatest possible travel companion.    LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The levels of income in parts of China and India were similar to those in Europe in the middle ages, until the Mediterranean pulled ahead – followed by northern Europe, initially Holland and then Britain. This ‘great divergence' was one of the fundamental shifts in history – and is only now being reversed.  Did the divergence arise from imperialism and a 'drain' of wealth from Asia, or did it arise from internal features of Asian and European Society?A lecture by Martin DauntonThe transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/diverge-asiaGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. Their music recalls the beginnings of folk. Not early America, not Celtic troubadours, but the beginnings of music itself, when song was a tool to tell stories. When you hear a Songs of the Folk selection, you will be impressed with the harmonies and the instrumental skill, but what will stick with you are the stories. You kind of get the idea they are building a world, and you’re hearing the first scenes in something larger. They sing about someone in their community and you can’t help but picture the whole town, and the next song seems to exist in that same town. Humans present their history in many forms, written language, musical beats and sometimes history is found within the very clothes we wear. Today we look through the clothing aisles and online catalogs with glee and get overwhelmed by the choices presented to us. This was not always the case however and one machine during the industrial revolution would change how we created cotton weaves and how quickly we could produce material for textile creation. That machine was known as the spinning jenny and with it came a whole new world of manufacturing and problems, but without it we would never have the clothing that advanced our civilization to limits unknown. Join us as we break the locks and look for secrets and attempt to steal the jewel known as The Spinning Jenny. Show Notes Episode 198: “I Saw A White Face, and They're All Painted Black” This week Host Dave Bledsoe digs into his own history of cultural appropriation stubbornly continues to do his “Uncle Murray” impression. (Mel Brooks should sue his ass!) On the show this week, we take a look at the long and embarrassing history of White People being just the Whitest of people. (Honestly, White People!) We open with a long talk about what the hell people are thinking in Virginia, and we mean that honestly does anyone know what is going on down there things seem a bit tense? We then dive headlong into the murky waters of why some black people thought it would be a good idea to paint their face black for their “art”. (Because they are White.) Then we take a fast tour through ALL the things stolen from Black folks by White folks and why they stole them. (Because, again, White People.) We ask some tough questions about WHY White people have such a blind spot to their ongoing cultural looting and why they get so upset about being called out over it. (You guessed it: because they are White people.) Finally, we look at how we can we can shake white people from their privilege and complacency so this sad tradition dies with this generation. (Pinkface at White People Parties, the parties where fun isn't allowed.) Our Sponsor this week is Flightless Bird Shoe Polish who want to remind you their product is MEANT TO BE USED ON SHOES NOT YOUR FACE! We open the show with hands down the most offensive movie we've seen since Birth of a Nation and we close with Spinning Jenny explaining their portal color pallette.
